Chapter four
It didn't take long to reach the room at the end of the hallway. The table had disappeared from it, and there now was a clear space to demonstrate anything from darkness to fire. The old man sat in a chair at the far end of the room, he was grinning in a creepy way, and Pele was once again reminded how much she hated him.
"Well, took you long enough. It's time to start." He paused for a moment, "you will be facing a powerful, magical creature. Nothing too dangerous, I assure you." And with that, a giant, toad-like creature burst out of the ground. It had large, sharp teeth, and it was covered in lime green, and purple warts. It let out a roar like bellow, and charged right at Pele.
In her mind, Pele was panicking. He had literally just said the creatures wouldn't be too dangerous, and then he sent this thing at her! She barely managed to dodge the things charge, if only because the creature was slow.
Summoning fire, Pele felt herself calm, just a little. She sent the fire into the thing's eyes, and it let out another roar. It charged blindly in the direction she had last been in, but by then she had moved places. Pele sent more fire at it, creating more and more flames that burned brighter and stronger. Soon, the creature was nothing but ashes.
The old man grunted. "Well, seems you're not just all bark, now are you? Hehe, you may go to your room." Pele didn't need to be told twice, and she rushed back to her room, where she could sit down for a little.
When she got back to her room, Pele collapsed on her bed. She had summoned a lot of fire, and now she was exhausted. She should have known better, but she still had. As usual, she questioned her judgement after she had made the mistake.
A knock on her door interrupted Pele from her thoughts. Pele sighed, and walked slowly to the door. Opening it, she found Crypt at the other side. "Oh, uh, come in...I guess." Pele muttered the last part, her body becoming sore from her overuse of fire. Crypt smiled at her, revealing sharp, cat like teeth. The smile seemed real, however.
"I just got done with my test. I had to fight a basilisk." Crypt said, her black eyes closing. Pele recalled being told a story about a basilisk once. It was a giant, venomous snake that was very powerful. Pele didn't know too much about it, however.
"I fought a giant toad." Pele said, smiling slightly. Crypt laughed, her small shoulders going up and down. "I just came to give you this." In Crypt's pale hand was a golden bracelet. It had a red jewel on it, and it was warm to the touch. "It is a fire jewel," Crypt explained, "it increases the power of fire. I don't really have a use for it, so I thought I'd give it to you." Crypt smiled again, and so did Pele.
"Thanks." Pele said, surprising both of them by pulling Crypt into a hug. After a moment, Crypt said goodbye, and left. Pele put the bracelet on, and laid back on her bed, and soon was fast asleep.
