Chapter 11

Anne was going to kill me.

Not only had I followed Kate around when I shouldn't have, I was getting myself kidnapped. I tried to get out of his grasp but the thing was that he was stronger than me. Normally when someone is attacking me, I just evade them. This time though the man had me in his grip.

I tried different things to get out. The first I did was try to bite his hand but it didn't work because his hands were much too strong for my jaw. Then as he was dragging me to a car, I slammed my heel into the top of his foot. It caused him to drop me and I ran... Straight into his friend.

Before I could realize what I had done, I was in the trunk. They slammed it closed and I lay wondering what to do. They conversed in French outside for a few minutes while I realized that the breeze I was getting inside the cat was not a fan but in fact holes in the door of the trunk allowing me to breathe.

I pushed my eye up against one of the holes. I could see the two men arguing and behind the I could see Kate and lover boy. They got up from the fountain and started walking towards where I was. Yes! I started hitting the side of my prison and yelling.

Unfortunately, it only got the attention of the two brutes who also noticed the couple walking towards us. They ran to get in the car and I groaned in frustration. Then I had a great idea.

As the car started I rummaged through my bag for something to push through the holes. My hand hit something that crunched and I pulled it out. Perfect.

My Chex-mix from the plane ride was still unopened. Thinking quickly, I opened it and launched a few out of the car then ate two. Kate and Anton took no notice. The car started and a few pigeons hopped over to eat my trail.

"Get away you birds!" I cried but the birds took no notice. More joined them and I decided that they might not be so bad after all. I continued to scream and throw my snack out of the trunk as we moved away from the little park. As the trail of Chex-Mix grew, so did the trail of hungry birds. My voice quickly tired and I knew that no one would be able to hear me over the cars so I stopped screaming but continued to make a path of birds.

Too quickly I ran out of food. There was nothing else that I could fit out of the holes except for a loose pencil that I flung through the open space. The road we were on was bumpy and made it difficult to look through any holes without smacking your face against the car which hurt. It was also quiet not counting the engine of the car. I laid on my side contemplating life until I was jerked suddenly because we stopped.

I expected that we had arrived wherever they were taking me to do whatever they were going to do to me. Angry voices were shouting as I peeked out of the hole closest to my eye to see more empty dirt road. I shifted so that I was laying on my back. Still cramped but it was a bit better.

The yelling outside continued when a scratching noise against the trunk prompted me to look out the hold once again to look for the source of the noise. This time I could see nothing but the fabric of a shirt meaning someone was outside. I started calling out to them for help.

"I'm trapped! Get me out!"

Thy banged the top of the trunk and hissed, "Be quiet!"

The voice sounded female and familiar and I fell quiet as I thought about who it could be. They continued to try to unlock the trunk. Only moments later, a click could be heard and the person opened up the top of my jail.

"Kate!" I cried elated to see her. She didn't seem as happy to see me.

"Unless you want to be captured again, shush! We'll talk later." With that, she motioned for me to follow her. I rolled out of the trunk grabbing my backpack. She closed the car almost silently but it wasn't quiet enough for the men turned and saw us.

"Run!" I called and we did just that.

Behind us, Blaise followed cutting off his argument with the capturers. The three of us broke through a bush and scared a group of pigeons that had been sitting in front of it as well as an old couple that was taking a walk. The men that took me were left in our dust because of the sudden departure.

"What were you doing getting yourself captured?"

"That was not my fault! I was just sitting behind a bush and they came up behind me."

"You should have been– Why were you behind a bush?"

"Well I had to hide somewhere from you guys."

Oops.

"Riley-Ann! You were following us?"

I felt like a young child getting scolded by her parents sitting in front of a pacing Kate and Blaise sitting nearby letting it happen.

"It want on purpose," I spluttered. "Plus I was just trying to make sure you were safe."

"Safe?" She cried. "What would you be keeping me safe from?"

My eyes barely shifted towards the other person present but it was enough.

"That is not true you–"

"What's going on in here? Oh hey, Kate. How was your date?" Anne walked in. Saved by the very person who was going to kill me in only a few seconds I thought ironically.

Kate smiled at me evilly and said, "Ryan and I were just talking about how she had a little slip up today while she was following me this morning."

Anne pinched the bridge of her nose. "Why on Earth were you following her?"

She cringed. "Do I even want to know what our slip up was?"

"Probably not, "Kate chirped. "But I'll tell you anyway. She decided that in order to 'protect' me, she would follow me while I was on a date. Then while she was spying and throwing things at us, she got herself captured."

"Once again, not my fault!"

"I have one question for both of you. Why? Ryan, I think you know what I want you to tell me already, but Kate why were you on a date? You do realize that you aren't supposed to leave unless you ask someone."

She wheeled around to look accusingly at Blaise. "You said that you asked someone about it."

"I ask but get no answer. I am assuming it means yes."

"Okay, I guess just don't do it again," Kate said.

Oh okay. I see how it is. He gets off the hook but I don't? That's okay, I'm cool.

We have a long discussion with Anne where she basically yells at everyone for doing something wrong. She yelled at me for following Kate, Blaise for tricking Kate, and Kate for wasting time while we are supposed to be preparing for a battle against the things. My friend brings up the point that it is break time and we are supposed to be resting, not working. It isn't very successful for Anne emphasizes the resting part of what she said.

We are there for a while more then sent to actually rest and not get kidnapped. Kate and I go back to the room and lay down to take a nap. I roll over unable to sleep while I hear snores from Kate and my mom who also entered the room to take a break.

After a long time with sleep not taking over my body, I decided to get water and walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria area where they kept water bottles. Unfortunately I took a wrong turn and got lost in the maze of endless dorm rooms. The hallway was quiet presumably because everyone was taking advantage of the time off to catch up on sleep. I looked for an open door to ask directions but saw none until I heard the buzz of a voice.

I followed the sound to find a door down one of the hallways that was cracked open. I walked to it and peeked inside. The person was talking on the phone with their back towards me. I was about to walk away to find someone else so that I wouldn't bother them when they started to talk.

"I know I shouldn't have jumped in front of the car to try to stop you guys but I don't think there was any other way to get your attention without letting my company knew that I knew you."

This person was speaking perfect English with hardly a French accent at all. I figured they were one of the few others that knew English as Roxanne had mentioned.

"Well, I had to stop you because the person I was with, insisted on seeing what was going on. By the way, you did a very sloppy job of kidnapping. Who the heck drills holes in the trunk of their car? Especially if that's where they're keeping the person! Honestly."

As he paused, I felt as if the blood was draining from my face. Whoever this person is, is in league with my captors. I mean, how many people would drill holes in the holding place of the prisoner.

"Not only that, but you captured the wrong person! I told you that I would be near the person the whole time. They were a girl with dark, long hair, tan, and pretty."

That seemed to mostly fit the description of me but it was quite broad. I also couldn't help but feel a little flattered that the people who took me thought I was pretty enough to fit the description.

"Did you not notice who I was with the entire day? Also, I said she was pretty."

Now that was just offensive.

"What's done is done, and we've lost a day thanks to you two but I'll find a way to get what I need by myself. Can you give a message to him for me without messing up? Good."

The person turned and I ducked out of his line of vision while still able to see who it was. Blaise. I knew there was something off about him.

"Tell him that they plan to attack in a week so we must prepare the forces. One large one to take over the city, and another smaller one to defend it. What do you mean 'what is the it?' You know what it is. ... Yes that it."

Was this it what our team came here for in the first place?

"Yes again. Tell him we need to protect the control system because that's what they're going for and that they don't know about the book yet but we should still have people there just in case. That's all. Don't mess this up like you did a few hours ago."

Blaise clicked the phone off and I snuck off in the direction I came from, no longer thirsty, and hoping to find a quick way back to my room to tell Anne what I had just witnessed.
