twenty-two

a few hours later.

J.D felt her brain in her head as it throbbed painfully. She was numb; She couldn't feel anything besides her head. Her eyelids were heavier than rocks and no matter how hard she tried, they wouldn't open. She felt cold and exhausted, completely empty, although she wasn't sure where it was coming from.

After a battle for power over her vision, her eyes finally fluttered open, she blinked several times and an overwhelming feeling of dizzyness and nausea overcame her.

J.D tried to move any part of her body, but nothing seemed to co-operate. Her face began to gain some feeling and she let out a quiet groan of pain, moving her face around to keep the blood pumping. She rubbed at her eyes, squinting at the sudden light.

She looked around to see an eerie, empty tarmac. Debris was scattered everywhere, and a hollow feeling set in J.D's stomach when she realised that she was alone. She had been left behind.

Where was Wanda? And Sam? Scott? Did Bucky and Steve make it?

All the questions whirled around in her mind and she forced herself to stand up. She placed her hand to her pounding head and blew out a breath of air. She groaned softly, pulling her hand back and seeing flakes of dried blood on her fingers. The last thing she remembered was checking on Spider-Man, and then...

How could she forget?

She saw Peter's face where the mask should have been. It had been him all along.

Deep inside, she knew it was him. From the familiarity of his voice to his actions, she wondered how she didn't see it before. Staggering over to the covered part of the tarmac, she wheezed, the feeling of adrenaline from the fight wearing off quicker than she could blink.

The sun was beating down on her back, and she ran a hand down her face before breaking into an awkward sprint towards the inside of the airport. All she needed to do was find a way out of there, back to the van where she could retrieve her belongings.

Her feet took her through the parking lot, and she felt the exhaustion weighing her down, but she didn't stop. She wouldn't stop, not now that she was on her own in a foreign country. She needed to phone someone, anyone

She gasped out in relief when she saw the van and Steve's blue Volkswagen Beetle sitting where they had been left. She practically collapsed against the van, taking a breath and holding her head in her hand.

The sound of sirens alerted her and she straightened up, staggering over to the van, pulling out her dagger and placing it in the lock, twisting it. The door swung open and she reached in, picking up the bag containing the entire team's clothing.

J.D shut the door again and disappeared, the only thing being the bag floating in mid-air. Glancing up, J.D noticed a security camera. She sighed and grabbed her dagger, throwing it at the piece of technology. A shower of sparks erupted from it and dropped onto the ground. J.D jumped up and reaching her arm as far as she could, grabbed the dagger and fell back to the ground. She ducked as the sparks rained down on her and ran past it, far away.

J.D sat on the floor of the hotel, a cheap German phone in hand. She didn't know who to call. She couldn't call Peter, for obvious reasons, she couldn't call Herb or Mason, they'd get angry, so who was she to tell?

Chewing the inside of her cheek, she sighed and dialled the number of the one person she knew wouldn't say a word to anyone.

"Hello?

"Hi, Michelle? It's J.D." J.D ran a nervous hand through her hair.

"J.D?" Michelle's voice was slightly surprised. "Mason said you were in Europe."

"Yeah, I am." J.D blew out a breath of air. "I-uh, need your help."

"My help?" Michelle asked, clearly confused. "Why don't you call Mase or Pete?"

"Because I trust you to keep a secret, Michelle." J.D admitted, and leaned against the edge of the bed, squeezing her eyes shut.

"What are you talking about?" Michelle queried. "I mean, yeah, whatever it is I won't say anything, but I'm confused as to what's going on."

"I need you to google when Leipzig airport will be opening again." J.D said, as she didn't want to use her wifi just in case she was being tracked. She probably wasn't, but she didn't want to take any chances.

"Shit, there's been some kind of attack there. It won't be open for another week or so at least." Michelle responded. "Are you in Germany at the moment?"

"Yeah, but I can't tell you anything over the phone just in case anyone's listening in." J.D was truly paranoid.

"Listening in?! What's going on?" Michelle was shocked. "Are you in some kind of trouble?"

"I just--" J.D began, not knowing what to say. "I needed to let someone know I was okay, and if I told that to Mase or Herb they'd freak out. So, um, if they don't hear from me just tell them that I called you, okay? I'll explain everything when I get back. Please say yes, I promise I'm fine and I'll be back soon."

"Okay, but I'm holding you to that." Michelle responded. "Be careful, whatever you're doing."

J.D smiled and hung up on her friend, glad that someone knew she was alive. What was she to do now?

Maybe she could catch a train or something. Then she could get to another airport and go back to New York.

How would she bring the bags without getting noticed? She couldn't. She wanted to bring Wanda, Scott and Clint's bags back, as well as Steve, Sam and Bucky's belongings.

Sighing deeply, J.D rested her head on her palm and stared at the wall in a state of despair. She was stuck in Saxony, Germany, with nowhere to go. What was she supposed to do? Stay there for a week until the airport is reopened? The return tickets weren't valid for another four days.

She still had four days left in the hotel, Clint must've booked anticipating they'd be there longer, so she wasn't going to take it for granted.

J.D stood up and made her way over to the bag containing all of the clothes. She pulled out Steve's pants, feeling around for a wallet, grinning when she found it. Taking it out and opening it, she gasped when she saw four crisp hundred euro notes.

J.D grinned and took one, shoving it into her back pocket and walking over to her suitcase, pulling out a pair of jeans and a sweater, along with her pair of converse.

She was going to make the most of her little holiday.

J.D sat in the middle of the food court of Zgorzelec Plaza, a shopping mall in Saxony. Bags pooled at her feet as she chomped on a hamburger. She had used some of the money she had found in Steve's wallet, as well as the money Herb had given her to spend.

Tapping her foot to the song flooding through the mall, she grabbed her lemonade and took a sip. She was just going with the flow. Everyone and everything was German, and she didn't understand any of it. She just nodded her head and said the only words she knew.

Hallo, Guten Tag, Danke, Bitte.

That was the extent of her German knowledge.

She ended up aimlessly wandering around, bought some socks and candy, as well as a matching cap and shirt that said I heart Germany on it, just to take the piss.

"Der Flughafen Leipzig ist stark beschädigt und wird nicht verfügbar sein, für mindestens 4 Tage." J.D heard several gasps from the people around her, and she too looked up at one of the screens in the food court to see a news reporter. Pictures of Leipzig Airport appeared next to the reporter with a headline underneath, and J.D. grimaced when she saw the destruction they had caused. It would no doubt take days to clear up.

Her phone rung a few times, with Michelle's number blaring on the screen, and each time J.D answered it was just her friend making sure she was alright.

J.D skipped through the mall with full arms, her new hat adorning her head. She was trying to at least act like she was having a good time. She had attempted to push all of the past events to the back of her mind and appreciate this country she had never seen before.

Since the shopping centre was only a block or so away from the hotel, she walked the whole way back.

The sun set over Saxony that night, and J.D sat on the balcony, watching with a tranquil expression on her face. The light touched the tip of buildings scattered around the city, and brought a calming pink sky to the land. Her stomach churned with nerves, but she decided to ignore it and appreciate the new environment.

She would've felt at peace, if only she knew the whereabouts of her new teammates.

four days later

J.D let out a breath of relief when she walked out of the arrival gates, feeling absolutely refreshed being back in New York. Her shoulder was weighed down with Clint's duffel bag that she had brought back from Saxony, and she pulled her suitcase behind her that held the rest of her belongings.

"J.D!" She heard Mason yell out, and her eyes lifted to see her brother, uncle and friends waiting for her. She couldn't help but smile when she saw them, she had missed them all. She sped up her pace and dropped her luggage, pulling her twin in to a huge hug. She relished in the comfort of his embrace, and held him as tight as she could. "Whoa, this is the nicest you've ever been to me, we should send you to Europe more often!"

"Shut up." J.D muttered, pulling away and sending him a lopsided smile. "You missed me, just admit it."

Mason rolled his eyes, leaning down to pick up her luggage. "Nice bag. You steal it?"

"Something like that." J.D joked. If only you knew, Mason. Next, she moved onto Harry, Gwen, Michelle and Peter. She gave them each a hug, holding on a little longer to Michelle, who sent her a look of relief and concern. When she reached Peter, she looked him up and down.

He still looked pathetic.

He was sporting a greenish eye that must've previously been bruised, and there were plenty of scabbed cuts along his face. Deciding to play it off, J.D chuckled at the sight of him. "Get into a fight, Pete?"

"You should've seen the other guy." Peter responded, and J.D pressed her lips into a smile. She couldn't help but feeling a little hurt that he was lying to her, but she wasn't much better at all.

"Next time you get into a brawl, call me." She joked. "I'd love to see you beat them up."

Peter rolled his eyes playfully, and J.D felt her heart weigh her down from the new information she knew, but she didn't want that to get it the way.

"C'mon, kid." Herb stepped forward and wrapped his arm around his niece's shoulders. "Let's go home, maybe we'll stop for pizza on the way?"

Her friends around her cheered, and J.D nodded, her smile forced. Yeah, she was happy to be back, no doubt, but would she ever recovery from the previous events?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I CAN'T WRITE.
