twenty-four

monday 20th of june 2016

The Avengers estate wasn't too hard to locate. J.D and Michelle had found it and managed to get a bus ticket that dropped her about a kilometre away from the gates. They had also 'borrowed' a couple of Michelle's mum's bluetooth earpieces that let them chat while J.D was on sight.

The James Bond theme song was stuck in her head as she snuck into the compound. Luck was on her side that day as well, as a courier truck was pulling into the estate, giving her access inside. Her feet crunched against the gravel driveway, the sounds concealed by the spinning of the tires.

"You know, these bluetooth things are pretty cool." Michelle muttered in her ear, and J.D smiled softly as she jumped onto the porch of the main building. She  waited for the old postman to get out and knock on the glass door, startling the two men inside.

"Tony Stank!" The darker skinned man piped up, a pained smile on his face. J.D squinted slightly. Was that Rhodes? What happened to him? "Someone's here for you!"

Tony Stark sent Rhodes a glare and walked over to the glass, typing in a password on the keypad and opening it for the elderly postman.

J.D managed to slip through the entrance as the middle aged man signed for the package. "Thanks, man."

"Not a problem, Mr. Stank." The man replied with a kind, wrinkly smile, and J.D watched as Rhodes grinned.

As the postman drove off, Tony turned to Rhodes and sent him a glare. "It's your fault that's a thing now."

"Whatever, Stank." Rhodes mocked. "Come on, help me back to my room, that's enough for today."

"Yes, sir." Tony rolled his eyes as he spoke sarcastically, and J.D walked past them and into the house without making a sound.

It was strange, walking through the main building. She had never 'broken into' someone's home before, and it felt wrong, but also quite fun. She didn't want to snoop, knowing it was wrong, so she was just going to find Tony's office.

It took her a while, though she did take the time to admire the rooms she walked through. It was wonderfully designed, but it all seemed so empty. It was clear there weren't many around anymore.

As J.D entered the main living area, she passed the familiar red man, Vision, sitting on one of the couches, staring into space. Between his fingers was a chess piece, and he seemed almost distracted. She didn't pay him much mind, she knew he couldn't see her anyway.

J.D then passed Black Widow, or Natasha Romanoff. The redhead was leaning against the balcony barrier, looking thoughtful and for lack of better word, just plain unhappy. J.D paused for a moment, but exhaled and continued to walk, ignoring how the assassin turned around, only to be met by nothing.

"Where in the compound are you?" Michelle asked, and J.D looked up to see two doors, one of them open.

"I think I'm at Cap's office." She said in a whisper, her eyebrows furrowing when she saw a figure inside. She tapped the bluetooth piece again, hanging up on her friend.

Hearing the sound of papers shuffling, J.D took a step inside and saw Tony Stark sitting at his desk, watching the phone line blink. An opened package had been tossed to the side, obviously days old, and a new letter was sitting in front of him, scrunched up carelessly.

J.D wanted to be angry at him, but she couldn't find it in herself when she saw his state.

She knew he was the kind of person to hide his feelings from everyone, pretending he was chipper all the time, but seeing him there and then made J.D's heart fall a little.

Before her was a broken man.

Tony sighed and placed his head in his hands, his fingers trembling slightly. J.D took a step back, wanting to leave him alone, but she tripped over a box sitting by the door, startling the man.

She became visible, and Tony looked up and jumped a mile in the air, his eyes wide in shock. "Motherfucker!"

J.D froze and gulped, holding her hands up, guilt overcoming her. "Uh..hi?"

Within seconds Tony's hand was armed, and pointed at the teen. "Who the hell are you and how did you get in here?"

"Can you please put the Iron Man hand thing down?" She squeaked, still slightly in shock by how she just made a fool of herself. "I'm not a threat...I'm Bladerunner? I just wanted to ask what happened to Wanda, Steve, Bucky, Sam, Clint and Scott."

Tony's eyes were still slightly wide, and his breathing was slightly erratic, but he reluctantly lowered his weapon, a look of recognition settling on his face. "Yo-You were at the airport?"

J.D nodded, and let her hands slowly fall to her sides. "Yeah, I was. Can you tell me what happened to my friends?"

"Hold on." Tony held a finger up, watching her curiously. "I have tight security on this place, how did you get in?"

"I snuck in when you got the letter from the postman." She responded, and he pursed his lips, before gesturing to the chair sitting in the corner. She pulled it over and nervously sat down, lacing her hands together. "Look, I'm sorry about this, I just didn't know how else-"

"Yeah, whatever, there isn't much here anymore anyway." Tony waved her comment off and she pursed her lips. "How come you aren't with the rest of them?"

"I was knocked out at the airport, by you, actually." J.D said, and Tony tilted his head.

"Oops." He responded, almost sarcastically. "Sorry bout that. And...you're...invisible?"

"Yeah." J.D responded, and Tony furrowed his eyebrows, before pointing at her. "Wait, are you that J.D girl? The one who was with Speedy and Melisandre in Sokovia?"

"I was in Sokovia with Pietro and Wanda." She retorted, and he scoffed. "How do you know that?"

"Wanda doesn't stop talking about finding this teenager she was friends with back in the day, always had a package on hold for if she ever saw you again." Tony said, and J.D sat up a little straighter. Tony folded his arms, before standing up and waving her along. As they walked, Tony looked over his shoulder. "So, why J.D? You got some kind of weird obsession with Heathers?"

"That, and I hated my old nickname, Jessie." J.D muttered as they walked back through the halls, though this time J.D was completely visible, Natasha and Vision watching her curiously.

"You know J.D was a dodgy psychopath who tried to bomb his school, right?" He said, walking straight into what J.D assumed was Wanda's room with no care in the world. "You don't plan on doing such thing, do you? Otherwise I'm gonna have to drop you off to this super top secret prison for weirdos."

"As much as I hate my school, I won't be blowing it up any time soon." She said bluntly, looking around Wanda's room in awe. It was simple, but sweet and elegant. A large bed sat in the middle, and she couldn't help but smile a little at all the photos of her and her brother.

Tony let out a soft cheer when he found what he was looking for, and threw it at J.D, who caught it quickly. "There. Take it home, treasure it, throw it away, I don't care."

"Thanks, Stark." She said, her hands clutching the brown paper wrapped gift. "So, are you going to answer my question, or not?"

"Yeah, sure." He shrugged. "They're all being kept in this place called the Raft Prison, but no one's meant to know about it so don't say anything."

J.D rose an eyebrow. "Are they still there?"

Tony shrugged. "I dunno. Cap sent me this package and this cute little apology note, so I can only assume they're out, but don't ask me where they are."

"Thanks." She mumbled, a small weight leaving her as she know knew the answer she wanted. She winced, before glancing up at the middle-aged man. "Um, are you...okay?"

"Of course, why wouldn't I be?" He brushed it off, and she pursed her lips, not wanting to intrude further.

"It's just..." She ran a hand through her hair and sighed. "I know a kid shouldn't be giving you advice, but if you're going through shit you should probably talk to someone."

"You're right." Tony began sourly, looking down at her. "A kid shouldn't be giving me advice."

J.D felt somewhat helpless in his presence. She didn't want to upset him, but she didn't want him to feel alone. She had only just met him but it was easy to tell he was going through a rough time. "Sorry."

Tony ran a hand down his face and huffed. "Did you need anything else?"

J.D rocked back and forth on her heels, before remembering something. "Um, you talk to Peter, right?"

"Yeah, why?" He replied, and J.D scratched the back of her head, her other hand holding the present. Tony then scrunched his face up, confused. "Wait, how do you-"

"Can you not tell him my identity, or that I came?" She interrupted. "I'm not ready to tell him who I am yet."

Tony still looked like he had more to say, but decided on keeping it to himself. With a curt nod, J.D offered him a polite smile.

"Thank you, Mr. Stark." She said softly. "You don't know how much all you've done means to me."

With that said, she vanished before him and ran back down the halls, leaving the billionaire to his own self-deprecating thoughts.
