J.D pulled her legs up to her chest, staring into the horizon. Her view was limited due to the rain and cloud hanging over the city.
Her expression was blank and empty, just like her. Ever since the god awful few days a couple of weeks ago, she had been nothing but drained. She had kept her eyes out for Krüger, but he had only appeared in her dreams.
She had been retreating into the night a lot more, and had found a construction site on top of a parking lot a few miles away that provided a cosy shelter for her to retreat to. It was doing her good now, and she rested her chin on her knee, her eyes watching the city come alive. It brought her peace, watching how other people lived. She felt cosy even, being amidst the storm but with a coat of armour surrounding her.
When she had returned back to school, it felt as if she was being babied. She was never left alone, and if she was, it would only be for a few seconds. It was sweet how her friends cared for her, but she didn't want them to hover over her.
It was only ten at night, so the streets were still full of people rushing to get home to their own lives. Herb was sick so he had been bedridden the past couple of days, and was completely ignorant to the fact that his niece wasn't in her room like he thought, as he had gone to bed early.
Mason was with Peter at a local comic expo, and though she had been invited, J.D preferred to stay by herself that night.
She looked down at the streets, her head covered by the shelter the construction site gave her, and she frowned when she saw two teenage boys walking past. When she noticed the scruffy hair and beige Jansport backpacks, she scoffed. It was Peter and Mason.
Her eyes trailed off a little bit, before they widened when she spotted three older men walking towards them quickly. They were all dressed in black and J.D squinted through the rain to see the glint of a knife. She quickly threw herself off the side of the building, catching herself on the edge and lowering herself down. She landed on the ground softly, and advanced towards her brother and friend.
The man with the knife was closing in on Mason, and she gasped out, throwing a force field at the three males, becoming visible. Mason and Peter turned around, and the former almost fell back in shock.
J.D's face was strained as she pushed the force field back, throwing the men several metres away. She collapsed to the ground in exhaustion and shielded her face from the two boys. Said teens ran over and she flinched away when they reached out.
"Thanks." Mason breathed, his eyes wide in admiration. "That was so badass! You're her, the Bladerunner, right?"
J.D pressed her lips into a smile and nodded at him. She wasn't going to use her voice, just in case.
Peter was staring down at her with a grin. "I knew you'd be back! This is so cool!"
J.D pushed herself up off the ground and disappeared without a word. Mason gasped and began jumping up and down like a fanboy. "Oh my god, oh my god! She's invisible!! That's so dope! J.D'll never believe us!"
Peter's head was bouncing up and down as he nodded quickly in agreement. He was still staring at where the Bladerunner had been, a somewhat knowing look on his face. He had to see her again.

"And then we heard this 'whoosh' and we turned around and she was there! She had this blue suit on like in the pictures, and she had this force field around the muggers, and then she pushed them across the street!" Mason gushed, and J.D watched him with amused eyes. It was the morning after the incident, and they were walking to school with Peter. "And the best part? She's invisible! It was so fucking badass!"
"I think I'm in love." Peter cooed, placing his hands over his heart, and J.D scoffed, rolling her eyes.
"You don't even know her." She argued, and Peter shrugged.
"It feels like I do, though." He exhaled happily. "She was so cool, like a hero you'd see in the movies! And I saw, she had a knife! That's why she's called Bladerunner!"
"You two are ridiculous." She shook her head, walking into the school gates. The two boys followed her, astounded.
"You don't believe us?" Peter queried, amazed, but also curious.
"Told you." Mason muttered with a huff. J.D stopped in her tracks and looked back at her brother. "What?"
"I'll believe you when I see her." She challenged, and the boys scoffed.
"We can't just ring her up and expect her to turn up." Peter tried to reason. J.D pouted, almost sarcastically.
"Sucks to be you." She said, and turned back around retreating down the halls.
Mason and Peter shared an exasperated look. They were going to prove to her that the Bladerunner was real, if it was the last thing they ever did.

J.D had never been so mad.
"What the fuck were you doing in my room?" She snapped, absolutely livid.
She had walked into her bedroom that day after school to see Mason and Peter sitting on the carpet, trying to pry open a box they had found at the bottom of her wardrobe.
"I told you." Mason said, slightly red. "Trying to get the box open to see what you were hiding."
"Why the hell do you care?" She snarled, and the two boys both shrunk back. Mason had seen J.D explode like this before, but Peter hadn't.
So this was the famous temper.
"What are you hiding?" Mason had the courage to pipe up again, and J.D sent him a venomous glare.
"I'm not hiding anything!" She hissed. "Just the fact that you think you have the right to sneak into my room when I wasn't here and try to invade my privacy pisses me off!"
"What's in the box?" Mason continued and J.D clenched her fists and her jaw hardened. "What are you so protective of?"
"These are where I keep my pads and tampons you fucking moron." She grumbled and both boys turned a deeper shade of red. "Yeah, you two are so intelligent your heads will explode from how fucking massive your brains are."
"What if you're lying?" Mason argued, and J.D flashed him a glare so cold he shut his mouth for once.
"Get out." She spoke brusquely, and the two boys didn't need telling twice. They shot past J.D, leaving her to herself.
The door slammed shut, and J.D pursed her lips, staring down at the box. With a sigh, she walked over to her wardrobe and placed it back in its rightful place out of sight. She didn't want anyone to know what was hidden inside it, it was a secret she had kept hidden for several months.
She wasn't about to lies go to waste.

"You know, I don't understand why everyone expects girls to look damn fine whenever we step outside the house." Michelle mused, searching through a rack of band t-shirts.
Her, Gwen and J.D had all gone to Vinny's Music Store just up the road from Queens Center Mall, the only shop J.D willingly entered. The store was over sixty years old, and had an astounding collection of vinyl, cassettes, CD's and instruments, as well as books, clothes, DVDs and posters. It appealed to people like J.D, who preferred music to shoes.
J.D chuckled as she scanned the cassettes in front of her. It was downstairs in the sale section, as tapes weren't as popular as vinyls. There were already ten piled up in J.D's basket, ranging from Buddy Holly to Dexys Midnight Runners. She nodded her head to the Spin Doctors tune ringing through the establishment.
"I just don't get how guys can pull off the casual look and everyone thinks they're stylish, but when we do it it's lazy." Gwen complained, playing with a Kylo Ren figurine she found in one of the aisles.
J.D suppressed her chuckle at their mindless boy chatter, placing a Billy Joel tape in her basket.
"So, J.D." Gwen jumped down from the bench she was sitting on, walking over to her and leaning against the side of the horizontal shelves J.D was hunting through. "You never talk about anyone, do you have a crush?"
"A crush?" J.D snorted, picking out Redbone and Tracy Chapman tapes. She glanced up at the girls, both of which were staring at her. "Who uses that term anymore?"
"What are we meant to use?" Gwen teased. "C'mon, surely you find someone attractive."
J.D shrugged. "I dunno, honestly."
"Really? No one?" Michelle queried. "Not even Parker? He totally likes you."
"He'll get over it." J.D replied. "I'm not his type, anyway."
"What's his type?" Michelle raised an eyebrow, and J.D smiled.
"Normal." She responded softly. "I'm anything but."
The three girls fell silent again, and J.D continued to find tapes that interested her.
"What do you think of Spider-Man?" Gwen piped up, and J.D snorted. "What? Don't you like him?"
"Yeah, I do, actually." J.D said, and Gwen squeaked. "Do you think he's cute underneath the mask?"
"Definitely." Michelle said, walking over to the pair. "People think he's a high school student, imagine if he went to our school?"
"Who'd it be though?" Gwen asked, picking out a Hall & Oates tape and placing it in J.D's growing collection. "What if we knew him?"
J.D smiled at them, clearly amused. She couldn't believe that on a day when she was with her friends, shopping, she was talking about the boy she still couldn't seem to get out of her head.
