Chapter 30 Knives

The blood would not stop pulsing from my thigh. The cold rain only antagonized my pain as well.

If I was in better circumstances I probably would have noticed this, but I didn't start out with any starter gear. No weapons, no ways, no...no clothes either.

Around my body was a simple thin sheet of silk dress. So it was useless when it started raining. What purpose did it even have?

I turned around and smirked as the tall grass left my sight. I had barely survived. The water level in the valley I was in began to rise rapidly. A few minutes ago, it was barely a paw length high, now its half of a cat's legs high.

I stopped moving and looked down at the murky mud water around me. I cupped my human hands and raised the water out of the mud. It was perfectly clear. A stream or lake had to be nearby.

I looked around in the partial flooded valley for some fallen branch or thick stick good enough to prop myself on. I locked eyes with a thick branch and scrambled towards it. The humans had walked around sticks before. It had to work for them.

I flipped the branch and used it to push myself up on my feet. For a few minutes I tried to get adjusted to it.

For the first time, I took a steady step forward and held my ground. I smiled as my bare feet actually felt good in the mud.

The entire feeling was strange, but it was enjoyable now.

The current came in from the north now. That was where I had to be.

I knelt down at bank of the lake and dove my heat down into the fresh water. The water was so good on my dried lips and parched throat.

Behind me, the water suddenly took a rapid turn in the current. It flowed away fast and the water level of the lake got lower.

I finally took a breath once my stomach was full. I tilted my head back and moaned. I took a deep breath of air and coughed.

"Hungry too?"

I spun around and caught a hand that was barreling toward me. I caught the other that came out as well. The force of person behind them clearly outdid me. I dropped both the links and was nailed to the lake bank.

A large figure lunged at me and held down my arms and pinned down my legs by my thighs with his knees. The man was large for such a smooth voice. His beating brown eyes glared at me with such an anger from a source I never knew.

"You do know that this is private property? I own this land and I won't have a stray dirtying my lake!" The man rose off of me and grasped me by my neck.

I gasped and fiercely clawed his hand.

"I see you've been in my sugarcane as well!" At this the man's grip got tighter. "A saboteur! A thief!"

Every thief has a reason to steal. I closed my eyes when I thought about the words of the man.

"MASON!"

My eyes barely peaked open at the loud stressed voice. The man holding me let go and turned back. Over the hill leading back towards the tall grass, a wide shouldered man failed around helplessly.

"THIEVES!"

The man in front of me cursed and darted up the hill, but he did not go forward anymore without a grasp on my sore wrists. I pleaded as he dragged me back to the dangerous grass.

My feet were barely accustomed to walking, so he really was half dragging me. I cried out and clawed his strong hand.

Five mid height silhouettes darted back from one another and then into the field of grass.

The man immediately tossed me aside and raged toward the five thieves stealing his...sugarcane?

I took the time of our separation to run away.

My feet occasionally twisted and I fell, but I kept going. The pain in my right thigh was hurting terribly now. The blood from it hadn't made it pretty and it stained the thin silk dress I wore.

I ran back toward the lake and was sheltered against the trees in my run.

I panted and cried.

For only a quick second, I turned my head to see if any was chasing me. In the short second of that, a root of a tree caught my right foot and I slammed to the ground at an angle. A loud crack in foot jolted through my brain and I silently screamed.

I laid on the ground for a long while before I had the nerve to stand up again.

Tears beat down my face as I painfully limped toward the straight way I was going from the lake.

When I finally saw clear light, I wore a tattered dress cloaked in blood, I had a severely gashed thigh, a still present snake bite effect, countless bug bites, and a twisted or broken foot.

When I saw the light, I held myself for a second before I connected eyes to a person just outside of the forest. After that split second I collapsed onto five million knives that impaled and tore into my flesh.
