02 | The Beach
"See aren't you glad you came to the beach," Olivia lays her beach towel on the sand, flopping on top of it while tossing her sandals off. "It's so nice out here."
"It's hot."
"If you take off your skirt and t-shirt it won't be so hot." She slides on her sunglasses over her face, stretching onto her back.
I wipe the sand that got on my skirt, sitting besides her, I open my notebook.
God is love.
I read the highlighted words.
I go down one line after another writing the following words.
God is power.
God is strength.
God is
I stop writing when a voice interrupts.
"Olivia! You didn't tell me you were coming to the beach." Olivia lifts up her glasses on top of her head and props her self onto her elbows.
"Camila!" She jumps rushing into a hug. "It was a last minute decision! I decided to show my cousin around starting with the beach!" She pulls back looking towards me.
"Audrey." I introduce myself, waving slowly.
"Camila." She nods her head and adjust the bag that she's carrying around her neck then facing back to Olivia.
"Are you out here taking pictures?" Olivia points to the black bag she's carrying.
"I got bored and decided to take some pictures of the scenery."
"Are you a photographer?" I stuff my things into my bag that I brought and begin to stand up.
"Not professionally." She grabs ahold of the case that I mistake for a bag and rubs it with her thumbs.
"Don't let her fool you Audrey! She's pretty professional! She takes amazing pictures! She took my prom pictures last year and OH MY GOSH they were magical! Show her some pictures!" Olivia excitedly jumps looking towards the camera that Camila begins to pull out of its case.
She turns it on, approaches me and begins flipping through pictures.
She shows me a ton of pictures of different beaches, flowers and a Ferris wheel.
"A Ferris wheel? Is there a carnival around here?" I look up from the camera towards Olivia.
"Yeah the carnival is just about thirty minutes away from here over at the docks. It's a massive carnival. We can probably go to it sometime while your here." I nod.
I haven't been to a carnival in ages. Last one I went to was when I was ten and I went with my dad.
My dad.
I take a deep breath thinking of something else.
"What else is around here?"
"Not much right in this area besides gift shops and small restaurants, we can take a walk if you want?" Olivia smiles hoping I say sure.
"Ok, but what about our stuff?" I glance back at our items we brought.
"Just leave it all here, I promise it will all be here when we get back." I glance between the stuff and Olivia not sure if I want to leave it all unsupervised.
"I promise everything will be here." Olivia urges.
"Alright let's go." I shrug.
"Yay!" Olivia squeals and claps in excitement, sliding her sandals on.
"Camila you coming?"
"I can't I have to get back but it was nice meeting you Audrey!" She slips her camera back into its case and walks the opposite direction.
"You sure you don't want to take off your skirt or something?" Olivia begins running her fingers through her hair.
"No it's alright."
"Ok but don't say I didn't warn you!" She starts sprinting down the beach leaving me to chase after her.
"OLIVIA!" I urge for her to slow down but she only continues to speed up.
How does she run so fast in sandals?
I stop to take my off holding them in my hands and continue to run.
"Olivia!" I gasp harshly through the lack of air I have.
Finally she comes to a complete letting me approach her.
I lean forward putting my hands against my knees gaining my breath back.
"Not a runner?"
"Is it obvious?" I choke out laughing.
"Due to you being out of breath I'm going to say so."
"You are correct." I stand up straight putting my sandals back on as I feel my heart beat racing.
"Good news we made it to the gift shops though!" She points to the small buildings up on the grass hill.
"We don't have money." The realization hits me.
"See that gift shop right there." She points to the bright pink building that says "Lenny's Gifters."
"Yeah."
"Lenny is a family friend we don't have to pay." She starts jogging over the the stairs, waking up to the building as I tag along.
Stepping inside, a cold breeze whooshes over to us.
"It feels good in here." I whisper.
"That's because of the new air conditioner I set up in here." A women who looks in her mid forties with ginger hair says as she steps up to the register.
"Hey Lenny!"
"Olivia! What can I do for you!" Lenny walks around the cash register over to us.
"I was just showing my cousin Audrey around," She glances towards me "But with the heat I decided to come here and wondered if you have any cold reusable water bottles and some homemade banana bread in the back for us?"
"Of course! I'll be right back!" We watch as she goes into the storage room and comes back with two water bottles and a loaf of banana bread.
She hands them over to Olivia.
"So this is the Audrey? The one you've been talking about for a month now about her arrival?"
"Yes this is the one! Her twin brother came to but we kinda just ditched him back at the house." She holds out a water bottle for me to take.
"He wouldn't have tagged along anyways." I say as I take it from her hand.
"Anyways I should show Audrey around more, but thank you so much Lenny for the water and bread!" We slowly start stepping backwards towards the door.
"Anytime! Stop by whenever! And it was nice meeting you Audrey!"
"You to!"
"Will do!" We both say at the same time.
We leave, walking back down the stairs.
I open my water taking a long sip, enjoying the coldness against my lips.
"Lenny seems nice." I rasp out swallowing the water.
"She really is, her and my mom become friends a few years ago I'm not sure how, maybe they just bonded with the fact they only have one kid but we I used to go over to Lenny's house every once in a while to hang out her son."
"She has a son?"
"Yeah he's our age." She splits the bread in half handing me one end.
I step back on the sand walking towards the ocean allowing our feet to get cooled off in the water.
As we walk, I take a bite of the bread staring at the water splash at my toes.
In the water I see tiny pieces of broken seashells scattered and buried in the wet sand.
I lift the bread up to take another bite but before I can I feel my clothes get soaked suddenly leaving the bread soggy.
I wipe the hair pieces that are stuck on my face away, looking over to what splashed us.
"CALIHAN!" Olivia screeches.
"Calihan?" She points out to the ocean to the shirtless guy wearing pink surf shorts on a surf board. He has brighter blonde hair than Olivia but with much tanner skin.
He appears to be laughing his head off next to another shirtless guy on a board with drenched dark brown hair that you can almost mistake for black. He has tattoos up and down on the bicep of his left arm but he's to far to tell what the tattoos are.
"Who's the other guy?"
"That's Kaisen Miller, stay clear from him, he's nothing but a douche." My eyes slightly widen by the word she choose.
"What about Calihan?" She pulls my arm getting me to continue to walk.
"Just stay away from both of them, I don't think that will be a problem for you since there definitely not the accompany you like to be around but I'm just warning you," She takes the soggy bread from my hands and throws into the garbage can.
"What do they do?"
"Stuff you can't stand like cussing, drinking, partying and you know stuff like that." She shrugs her shoulders.
"Do you do any of that?"
"Not like them. Just take my word for it and stay away."
"You party?"
"Yeah I mean there's parties every night." We arrive back to where we started with everything exactly where we left it.
"There's a party tonight?" I grab small bag stuffing it into the beach bag Olivia brought.
"Yeah but I'm not planning on going since your here."
"I've never been to a party is it wild?"
"You wanna go to one tonight? Since it's Friday tonight should be a blast and I wouldn't say it's to wild." She shoves her towel into the bag on my shoulder.
"I don't know Olivia." I adjust the bag, heading back to the beach house.
"It's just a small get together tonight, only a few friends."
"Only a few?"
"Only a few. You don't have to do anything you can just come and see what it's like and we will leave whenever you want." I stay silent, quietly thinking.
"You promise we'll leave when I'm ready?"
"I promise." She says with her hand on her heart.
"Fine I'll go."
