Original Edition - Chapter 24: The Wolf

"Charlotte?" Marcus' voice laced with fake concern carried over the lawn toward Levi and I. I felt my beast rip at my brain, she wanted his head, as did I. He walked a down the steps of the porch and stopped to look at me. His fake relief was almost convincing, so good he should probably win a damn Oscar. "Baby, thank God! You have no idea how worried I was!"

"How did you find me?" I bit out harshly. I could see him flinch a little and smiled inwardly to myself. Good.

The blonde man stepped towards Marcus then leaned on the stairwell and looked at us amusingly. "We met at a little diner down the road. Said he was looking for his wife, thought she ma have come up here cause someone saw a truck she was driving at a gas station up this way. Lucky for him we had heard rumors about her and thought we would help him get her back. Hate to see a man broken up from his wife."

Levi snarled as vexation coursed through my veins. He found me. Shit. I thought I had been clever, I thought no one would see. I thought wrong.

But it didn't matter. I wasn't going back to him, I would never back to him.

I wasn't that girl. I was not her anymore. That life of mine died when I took that bear's life and walked away a new person, a new wolf.

"Come on over here honey and we will let your friend go." I looked over at Levi who was ready to charge at them, but I knew there was a better way to do this. We had to be smart.

"Do you trust me?" I whispered over to him.

He flickered his icy silver eyes over to me and held my gaze in his for a tense moment. "Course girl."

"Then go with it," I answered back.

I stepped towards Marcus; Levi grabbed my arm and spun me to face him. "No."

"Trust me, Levi," I whispered back. He released my arm as Elliot stepped up to him. Both of them watched me with a mix of rage and horror.

Eight rogues were a lot, but after killing a damn grizzly bear my wolf and I felt confident. I trusted her and she trusted me. Our blood started to course with rage, a fire of furious energy that we knew was the alpha in us starting to ignite in our veins. The men all stiffened as I walked closer to them. They could feel her, feel my wolf. They would feel her. They would feel her damn teeth when she crushed their necks.

They watched me curiously as I approached. Some started to look like the regretted being there, they didn't know that two alpha wolves were living here. Their wolves were weak. Sick. On the cusp of death, hell, they smelled like death itself.

I walked closer and let my wolf come forward. She eyed them all and snarled at them, visibly shaking some of them.

Hell hath no fury like the rage of a pissed off female alpha werewolf, and right now, we were livid.

"Charlotte dad and I are almost there, three minutes tops, just keep stalling." Remi's voice hurriedly came across the link and I had no doubt they would be there sooner than that. They were damn fast, he was damn fast, but right now my wolf was a second away from tearing into her prey; they needed to hurry.

"Better hurry or you're going to miss all the fun," I replied quickly.

Marcus stepped down onto the lawn and let out a sigh of fake relief. God, he was disgusting. The only good thing about him being here was the fact that I finally would have the chance to kill him.

He had his blonde hair combed in a perfect 'dapper' side combover, and his teal blue polo tucked into his perfectly ironed Khakis. Dear God, how did I ever find this man attractive?

His fake tan looked too orange in this light and his hair too blonde. He was so fake. He was so fake like the life I used to live. It was all fake. It wasn't me and it will never be me again.

I walked towards him and I saw right through him to his rotten core. His face was painted with fake adoration, but his eyes held rage. Rage that I recognized all too well. His eyes always told the truth, because while his lips would be saying 'I'm sorry' his eyes would be plotting each blow that he gave me time and time again.

My beast wanted to claw his eyes out then eat them.

"Baby," he called out as I got closer with a soothing voice. "God I was so worried. I'm so glad you're okay."

I didn't respond. I just eyed the rogues around him and let my wolf assess them. She looked them up and down and deciphered which ones she should lunge at first. They were her prey, and she was ready to hunt again.

She did what she was supposed to do, what a predator was supposed to do. She looked for weaknesses and attack points. I could feel Levi's tension behind me, but my wolf and I were humming with ice cold confident wrath. We would spill blood today.

Marcus sighed again. He was growing impatient. The fact that I hadn't even acknowledged him was causing him to loose his cool. Pitiful. "Baby, I'm not even angry. I honestly am just so happy to see you. I was so lucky to find these guys."

"Ya you were," one man shout out sarcastically from the porch. I flickered my eyes to him and let my wolf come a little forward. His laugh died immediately as he realized what I was. He was no match for me and he signed his death warrant the minute he stepped on this property.

"We didn't think it was true," another man added cryptically. "Heard a lot of rumors about some 'girl' living out here. Didn't think they were real. Seems like they are, aren't they girl?"

"If the rumors are true as you say then you know exactly how this will go down," I answered the man cryptically.

He snapped his blue eyes that were stained with red to me and gave me a long suspicious glare. "Do I?"

"You should know better pup, you should know when you are truly outmatched by one that easily outranks you," I spat out.

The man clenched his fists and bit back a growl. Apparently, Marcus wasn't aware of what we were. God I couldn't wait to let my wolf have a bite out of his hide.

"Baby," he said as I neared him. "What are they talking about? What's going on?"

"They're just realizing what a stupid mistake they've made," I answered without taking my eyes off the rogues.

I could tell I was making him uncomfortable and it gave me so much pleasure knowing he didn't know why. His body tensed defensively as I approached, as my wolf looked him up and down and contemplated all the lovely ways she wanted to kill him. His subconscious could feel her, feel us. It could feel the power and rage radiating off me; it caused him to squirm nervously. I bit back a laugh and eyed him up and down while my wolf licked her lips at the smell of his blood.

"Just come home. I miss my wife. I miss you. Please baby?"

I laughed.

I laughed so hard that it seemed like I lost my damned mind. Maybe I did, but it didn't matter to me. I shook my head and looked back at him. He was trying to hide his anger but his twitching fist gave too much away.

"Oh Marcus," I said with patronizing laced words. "I am no longer your wife. I am never going anywhere with you again. So go screw yourself."

His eyes flared with rage as some of the rogues bit back laughs. "What do you mean you're no longer my wife? We're still technically married, remember?" he seethed harshly towards me.

I laughed again before looking back at him with a satisfied smile. "No, because technically after today, I'm going to be a widow."

His eyes were wide as saucers as the words left my lips. Before he could blink I socked him hard in the stomach then grabbed by his hair and tossed him straight into a nearby tree. He groaned as his body hit the base, but he laid there. Good. I didn't need him getting mixed up in this, his throat was mine to rip out.

I didn't waste time. The blonde man jumped at me and I lunged out of his way as another threw a fist towards me. I could hear Levi growl so furiously as I caught the man's fist that some of the rogues on the porch visibly shuddered. They messed with the wrong wolves.

I shoved the man's fist back then socked him right in the jaw. Before he could recover I sliced through his neck with my claws that had pushed forward and pulled his spine apart.

Another man tried to attack me from the side but I leaped over my first kill and onto the lawn. I had to draw them away from the house, away from Derek.

The man chased me as Elliot zipped past him like a bolt of red lightning. I led him and two other's far enough away while Levi snapped the stalky man's, who had run across the lawn to challenge him, head clean off.

The first man following me lunged forward but I just dodged him. These rogues were messy. Sloppy. Their brains were far too gone to make any rational judgment, but their beasts were strong, so I had to be careful.

I roundhouse kicked the second man chasing me, then leapt onto the third man. Before the man realized what was happening I dug my claws into his chest and pulled out his heart.

The two that were left with me were pissed, they didn't take losing this man too lightly. Their wolves were close, too close.

One man swiped at me but I dodged then hit him right in his spleen. I turned and thrust my palm up, breaking the other man's nose so hard that it looked like I shoved it halfway up his forehead.

My wolf was having fun with these two. Too much fun. To her, this was child's play compared to Levi, Derek, or to our bear.

But our friend was at risk and she was growing impatient. I ran towards one of them and ducked under their punch, then used their shoulder so I could hoist myself on top of the man's shoulder and snap his neck with my thighs as I spun off.

I jumped off him as he fell and stalked right towards the other man who retreated to the cabin as cowardly whimpers came from his lips. Wimp.

Marcus ran forward with a look of shock as he looked at the men I left behind. "Charlotte what the hell?! What the hell are you? What have you done?!"

I didn't have time for his shit. I punched him hard in the jaw, knocking him on his ass a few feet away with me. "Stay there, I'm not done with you yet," I snarled out.

Elliot was fighting with murderous rage with a man while two held Derek in the far corner of the porch. I looked over to Levi who's arms were covered in blood up to his elbows as he walked towards me, away from a man with his guts completely ripped out and spilling onto our grass. Right behind that man was another with the firewood ax lodged deep in his head.

Levi's fiery gaze met mine as we faced the porch together. Elliot ripped apart the man who he was sparing with, literally. He ripped his arms clean off his body and tossed them over the railing into Derek's rose bushes.

Another man with amber eyes that were turning red, the color of all rogue's eyes, walked towards us and snarled. Levi scoffed. He walked straight up to the man who dared to challenge him. The man threw a punch that Levi easily caught. He started to crush the man's fist in his, then used his other hand to quickly pluck out one of the man's fangs.

The man wailed with rage and pain, but Levi was just annoyed. He reached forwards and mechanically snapped his neck then kicked his body aside. "I'm checking the house, finish off the the other's with Elliot."

Elliot was dragging the two rogues by their ears out towards the lawn. The were flailing like fish as he continued to drag them down the stairs. I stepped out of his way as he threw then into the center then hissed at them.

"What the hell?!" Marcus yelled out. He looked at me then to the forest then back at me.

I shook my head to him and snarled. "If you run I will hunt you down. Sit your ass down, now!"

His mouth almost hit the ground but his legs moved obediently as Elliot and I walked to the last two rogues. "Which one do you want?"

"I just want that one back there by that tree, these are yours. He's your mate, these are yours to kill," I answered calmly.

A wicked smile tugged at Elliot's lips as he stepped forward. It was in that moment that I learned to never screw with someone's mate. I don't think I had ever seen anything so violent as the sight of Elliot taking his fury out on the two rogues.

One of them managed to escape him as he ripped into the other man's neck with his fangs, spilling blood and flesh all over our lawn. But that man wasn't going anywhere. My wolf snarled at him. We stepped in front of him and dared him to challenge us.

He paused and looked at us with fear that seemed to freeze his limbs. Dumb move. Elliot was right behind him and sinking his fangs into the rogue's next before he could blink, and in a blink, the man was finished.

I nodded to Elliot who rushed over to Derek after he was finished. Levi had fetched him a blood bag and pieced it with a bendy straw that Derek was drinking greedily out of. My wolf let out a whine for him, I couldn't imagine how much pain he must be in.

"Is he alright?"

"Yap," Levi replied quickly. "He just needs to drink." Levi set a few blood bags down on a chair and traded places with Elliot.

Levi started to slowly walk down the steps as Marcus scrambled up and started to march towards me. A low rumble vibrated from Levi as my soon-to-be-late husband approached me. "He's mine, Levi. This is my fight, not yours."

"I know girl, doesn't mean I don't want a piece of him."

I chuckled darkly as Marcus gave me a look that I am sure was meant to intimidate me, but all it did was cause my wolf and I to laugh at how pathetic he was. "Are the others almost here?"

"Liam and Lander will be here shortly, I told the others to check the perimeter for any other rogues," he answered while I started to slowly circle Marcus.

"Who the hell is he? Huh? Your new bang buddy?" Marcus spat out.

I laughed. I laughed hard. "Honestly, there are people torn limb from limb around you and you're concerned about who I am sleeping with?"

I head Levi chuckle behind me and settle on the stairs while Marcus seemed like he was going to visibly explode with rage. "You're coming home, Charlotte."

I kept circling him slowly. My wolf wanted his throat, and I did too, but I wanted to enjoy this. I waited too damn long for this. "I am sure there is a Taylor Swift song for this moment," I thought out loud. I snapped my fingers as realization hit me. "Ya, it's called 'We Are Never Getting Back Together.' I guess it's less violent, but it still works."

"Don't test me, Charlotte," he bit out.

I laughed. "Test you? Riddle me this, husband, my dad used to tell me this story all the time; not like you would know, you never asked about my parents–"

"That's because I knew it upset you!" he exclaimed while throwing his hands up.

I growled coldly at him. He widened is eyes and took a step back. "I'm telling a story so shut the hell up." I stalked around him some more. He had nowhere to go, there was nowhere that he could go. I would hunt him down if he ran. I would hunt him down and ensure that he his life was mine to take. "Now, a scorpion and a frog sit on a river bank together. The scorpion asks the frog for a ride across the river, but the frog isn't too sure. I mean, scorpions are poisonous and known to sting other animals when they get too close. Their sting could kill you! How could the frog trust the scorpion?

"But the scorpion assured the frog over and over again that he would not sting the frog, all he wanted was a ride to the other side. Stinging the frog meant that he would die too, so he promised to not kill the frog. The frog agrees and lets the scorpion crawl on his back then the frog starts to paddle them across the river, and do you know what happens?"

Marcus was fuming. He said nothing. His brain was too full of outrage to think clearly.

I looked over to Levi who was staring at me with a look of amusement and shock. He looked at me like I grew two heads, but he also certainly was enjoying this moment. "Nope girl, got nothing."

"Elliot?" I called out to the redhead who carried Derek to sit on the stairs next to Levi.

He handed Derek his blood-bag juice box and shook his head. "Nope Char, can't say that I, in all my years, have heard this one before."

I snapped my eyes back to Marcus and smiled. I am sure in that moment I looked like Gone Girl Amy crazy, hell I felt it, but I didn't give a shit. Every ounce of my ire was justified and my beast agreed. I wouldn't feel bad about this, or ashamed, ever. "Well, the scorpion stung the frog, twice!"

I eyed Marcus as he turned to face me. My beast was close, but I pushed her back gently. We would both have our turn tonight. "The frog feels the sting and paddles faster. He's close to the other side, but the venom is spreading too quickly. His limbs are starting to go numb and he starts to sink.

"He asks the scorpion why he stung him? I mean, he was giving him a ride! The scorpion promised not to! Now the scorpion has killed them both! And do you know what he said?"

Again Marcus said nothing. I am sure he thought that after I was done with my little monolog that he was going to be able to have his way with me like he used to. How wrong he was.

I looked over at my friends on the porch and they shrugged. "Got nothing Char," Derek was able to croak out. My heart swelled at the sound of his voice. It fed the energy buzzing through me and powered me to go on.

I stopped a few feet away from Marcus who had his hands planted right on his hips. "The scorpion said 'because it's in my nature, and you knew what I was.'

"You see Marcus, I used to be the frog. I used to let you sting me and sting me over and over again and I would ask myself why? I mean you said you loved me, and you apologized, so why? Why would you harm someone you loved as you did? Why would you manipulate someone? Rape them? Beat them until they could barely breathe, let alone walk?

"Like the moral of the story my father used to tell me, you are what you are. It's in your nature. You are the scorpion, a pathetic one. You use your sweet words to try and cover up what a disgusting piece of shit you are, and you know what? I am no longer surprised, I am not longer the frog anymore."

"Then what are you?" he spat out. He ground his teeth together and clenched his fists that I so badly wanted to let my beast bite off.

I chuckled darkly and let my wolf surge closer. His eyes widened and I knew it was because my eyes were glowing. I felt the hair start to protrude out of the back of my neck and my fangs elongate. "Baby, I'm the wolf."

With that, I socked him hard in the stomach, then used my other fist to crush his jaw. He stumbled back and wiped at his busted lip then looked down at the red liquid coating his fingers.

He looked back to me, a little dumbfounded, before looking to the men on the porch. Levi snarled at him and Elliot hissed so sharply it made him wince. He would get no sympathy from them. He looked back at me and sneered. "So, this is how you want to play then?"

"All night, Marcus," I added mockingly.

He ground his teeth then lunged at me. I dodged him then nailed him in his kidney. He hissed out from the pain, but turned on his heel and swung his fist across towards me. I ducked and socked him hard in his shoulder then kicked down on his kneecap, cracking it with a sickening crunch.

I wasn't going to be on the defensive, not anymore.

I hit him hard in his ribs, cracking at least two of them, then hit him hard across the mouth–knocking his front tooth out.

He let out an animal like cry as blood started to pour out of his mouth. He looked back at me, horrified and disgusted, as he straightened back up and tried to save his dignity. "What the hell are you?"

"Would you like to see?" I replied cheekily.

Before Marcus could blink I lunged at him and let my beast come forth. She tore through our skin with a rage-crazed bloodlust. It was her turn to fight.

Marcus hit the ground with us on top of him, my beast snarled at him and smelled the flesh that she would soon feast on. He looked at her like his brain was going to explode. She stepped back and let him crawl backward then up to his feet, she wasn't going to end this that quickly for him.

He looked over to the porch again then back to my wolf then back to the men on the porch as my beast started to stalk her prey. "What the hell are you people?" he yelled out.

"Well," Levi said while standing slowly. He leaned on the railing and eyed Marcus for a long while and chuckled. "Red, back there with the brunette in his lap are vampires, but we're werewolves."

"We're?" Marcus asked a little sardonically.

Levi smiled menacingly. "Me and Charlie girl there. Should have known better than to piss her off."

Marcus looked back at my beast and stepped backward. He wasn't running away. The only place he was going was six feet under the ground.

My wolf had enough. I had enough. It was time to end this.

She lunged at Marcus, and he didn't even have a chance. First, she bit into his chest and ripped one of his pectorals off, then she tore off his arm and tossed it over towards Levi.

She snarled at him as blood was pouring out of him. He was wailing in pain and still trying to fight us; letting out screams and moans that sounded like music to our ears. But he was weak and growing weaker. The loss of so much blood was starting to take a toll on him.

Before he could take his last breath I shifted back into my skin and growled at him so hard it shook the damn ground under us. "Good riddance," I snarled before I shot my clawed fingers through his throat and pulled it out.

I closed my eyes as I felt his chest cavity stop rising up and down. He was dead. He was gone. That part of my past was truly gone and I never had to worry about it ever coming back for me. Never.

I opened my eyes and blinked back tears of happiness that wanted to pour out. My wolf was proud and full of compassion for us. She knew how much he had hurt me; the number he did on me. She was only thankful that I let her help; but she was my partner in crime now, we did all things together and we always would.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned. Levi was looking at me with a ghost smile on his lips. He pulled his shirt off and handed it to me. I stood up and slipped it on then wiped away a baby tear.

Levi looked down at my now late husband and let out a breathy laugh. "Well girl looks like your a widow now." I laughed a little as the tears fought their way forward and nodded. "Come here," he said while opening his arms for me.

I hugged him and let the tears come forward. I wasn't sad, not at all. I was just so grateful that he was gone, that it was completely over.

But most of all I was so happy because I felt like by killing Marcus, I killed the last parts of my past that I was leaving behind. I was a new woman, revived and resurrected. The joy in that notion, the thought of the new life and future before me made my beast and I swell with a joy we hadn't felt in so long.

Levi kissed my hair before I pulled away and looked back at Marcus. "Well girl, remind me not to piss you off that much."

I laughed and playfully swatted his arm before turned towards Derek. Liam and Lander caught my eye along with Remi and Bowie. They stood next to the railing eying my dead husband, a little astonished, but mostly in looks that seemed impressed.

Remi nodded approvingly. "Some dope shit Char, gotta hand it to ya."

Bowie smacked the back of his head and gave Remi a long look to which Remi just shrugged innocently. I shook my head and chuckled as I started to make my way to the porch.

Liam said nothing as I walked past them to Derek, but gave me a small smile. I returned it then turned to Derek, who was starting to look a bit better. He engulfed me in a hug and pulled me tight against his chest. "I love you, Char."

"I love you too," I whispered back. Elliot rubbed my back then kissed my forehead before handing Derek another blood bag with a straw in it.

"Holy shit! Damn Levi, what the hell?" David called out as he and Blake walked up. The looked at the sight of our cabin, that looked like something out of a horror, then back at us.

Levi sighed and looked around and shrugged. "Good thing our backup showed up, we really needed them," he replied sarcastically.

Blake rolled his eyes and eyed the remains of Marcus then flickered his eyes back at me. "Well, you did tell us you had it handled. "

Levi muttered some curses under his breath and looked over at Lander who was assessing all the body parts scattered everywhere warily. "Bring some of those gammas over here and have them clean this shit up. Burn the bodies."

"What about that one?" Blake motioned his chin over to Marcus. "He's a human. What's he doing here?"

"Long story, basically he's Charlie girl's now late-husband," Levi answered then sat down next to Derek.

Blake looked at me with wide eyes and nodded amusingly. "Well then, what do we do with him?"

"Take him out closer to Anchorage and drop him in the woods somewhere. I doubt the alpha of that land will mind. Let the humans find him. He'll be reported dead from an animal attack. I doubt anyone would think anything else." Liam finished then looked at me with a ghost smile. I felt his wolf caress the edges of my mind and I was too caught up in the moment to stop him. I mouthed 'thank you' to him while Levi worked out the details with Lander and David.

Elliot and I got Derek in the house and in bed with a cooler full of chilled blood next to him. Elliot was like a worried mother hen and made sure that Derek drank as much as he could, and then a little more.

I cleaned myself up in the shower and washed all the blood off my skin The water turned red as it hit the shower floor and washed down the drain. Down the drain. My past, that shadow of a person I used to be was washed down a damn drain, as it should be.

Claire was busy in the kitchen cooking together a big pot of tomato soup and an army of grilled cheeses for us. The gammas were still busy in the yard, and I assumed that it would take a while to get all the aftermath off our grass.

Claire rushed to me and wrapped me in a tight hug. "Oh my God, I am so glad you're okay." She sighed and pushed me back slight to look me over for any sign of injury. "Are you ok?"

I nodded and smiled a genuine smile. "I have no words for how I feel because 'ok' certainly doesn't do it justice."

She pulled me in tight again and kissed my hair then my cheek as she nuzzled her's against mine. She let me go reluctantly and looked over at the stove then back at me. "You hungry?"

I nodded as my belly grumbled. "Has Derek eaten? I can take a plate to him?"

She winked and nodded to me. "I think he would like that. He looks better."

I was relieved but my wolf needed to check on him and make sure she did her part to help. Claire helped me carry in food for both Elliot and Derek to Derek's room. Derek was still drinking his blood as Elliot walked out of the bathroom, freshly showered, in basketball shorts and a t-shirt.

Derek smiled and patted the spot next to him as Elliot tossed him the remote. He pulled me into another hug and let my wolf nuzzle his cheek. "I am so proud of you, you know that?"

I nodded and sighed then pointed to a mountain of food piled on the trays Claire had set next to the bed. "You need to eat."

Derek rolled his eyes while Elliot chuckled. "Yes, nurse Char."

"I only do it because I love you and I want to keep you around for a while."

"Charlotte, I am a vampire. I have been around for like five hundred years, and I plan on being around for many more."

My mouth hit the ground. "Five hundred years?!"

Elliot chuckled and hopped into bed next to me. "Oh come on Charlotte, it's not that old. Besides babe, I think you still look amazing for your age."

Derek winked at his mate and just laughed at my shocked expression that I couldn't shake. I turned to Elliot who was practically inhaling a grilled cheese and eyed him pensively. "And how old are you?"

"Geez Char don't you know it's rude to ask people their age?" he teased through a mouth full of food. I scoffed and rolled my eyes while he swallowed down his sandwich. "Well, this year I think I will be four hundred and thirty-two, but who knows... I mean, I kinda lost count after three hundred."

Derek laughed and pulled him close to me again after he set his plate on his bedside table. "Get used to it Char. This is your new life in the world of supernaturals," he said playfully.

I mussed a bit and nodded. "Yes, yes it is."
