Chapter 2
Zeb had been worried ever since Ezra stormed into their room and never came out. He knocked on the door and tried to talk with the kid but there was no reply. Zeb gave up and walked to the common room where he met up with the rest of the crew.
"Kanan, what's going on with Ezra?" Hera asked worriedly. "I don't know, I never seen him so upset before," Kanan admitted making Hera more worried. "The kid isn't coming out anytime soon," Zeb said getting everyone's attention. "I get why today is bad for you Kanan but Ezra never really existed at the time," Sabine said.
"I'll try to talk with him again," Kanan said and went to see Ezra. He knocked on the door and said, "Ezra, it's Kanan. Can I come in and talk with you?" There was no reply and Kanan thought the kid wasn't going to talk with him until suddenly the door snapped opened. Ezra stood at the door with his head bowed. He walked over to the bed and sat on it.
Kanan entered the room and sat next to Ezra. "What's wrong?" Kanan asked. "Nothing, a-absolutely nothing," Ezra said flinching at the cracking of his voice. "Can you tell me what's making you upset?" Kanan asked. Ezra took a moment before saying, "Today's my birthday."
Kanan was completely and utterly surprised but contained it for the sake of his padawan. "What's bad about your birthday?" Kanan asked. "Does it matter why I hate today?!" Ezra snapped. "Well it must matter enough for you to let me in," Kanan replied making Ezra go silent.
Kanan sighed and stood up saying, "I'll be right back." Ezra nodded as Kanan left the room and went to the common room. Everyone looked over at Kanan with hope filled eyes that he had some kind of information about Ezra.
"So?" Hera said, "How'd it go?" Kanan looked over at Hera, "Not as bad as I thought and I actually got something."
"What is it?" Sabine asked. "Today is Ezra's birthday," Kanan said shocking the crew. "That doesn't really explain why he is depressed," Sabine said. "That's all I could get out of him," Kanan said, "Hera?"
The pilot looked over at him with shining emerald eyes, "Yes?" "Do you know how to make a cupcake?" He asked making everyone confused expect the two adults. Hera smiled and said, "Yes."
It took a couple of minutes with Hera's baking and Sabine's artistic skills but then they had a chocolate cupcake. Kanan put a single candle in the dessert and Chopper lit the candle. "I'll get him, you all get ready," Kanan said. They all agreed as Kanan went to get the youngest crew member.
The Jedi knocked on the door and Ezra opened it. "Come on, I want to show you something," Kanan said making his student curious. "What?" Ezra asked and Kanan guided him to the common room. "You'll see," Kanan replied then opened the door. "Happy birthday!" Hera and Sabine shouted with joy.
Ezra was stunned then turned to the table to see the cupcake. He remembered his last birthday with his parents with the cupcake on the table ready for him to blow it. Yet, the door was shoved open and soon his parents were dragged off.
"Ezra," the padawan shook out of his thoughts and sprinted to the closet in the cargo bay. He brought his knees to his chest and cried quietly to himself.
The crew was left speechless as they saw Ezra run off as pale as a ghost. "What just happened?" Zeb asked. "I guess the kid didn't like it," Sabine added. "Well I guess it doesn't matter now," Hera said, "Alright, lights out." Everyone headed to bed expect Kanan. He was left in the common room and still trying to figure out what else to do but nothing came to mind.
He looked over at the table at the cupcake that was still flickering with the fire. Kanan sighed in defeat and turned off the light before leaving to his room to sleep.
Ezra calmed down about an hour later and crawled out of the closet. He knew the crew was sleeping so he wandered to the kitchen to get water for his dry throat. As he was heading to the kitchen, he stopped in the common room when he saw a small light. He walked over to it and saw that it was the cupcake.
Ezra stared at it for a moment blankly before sitting down on the seat. He watched the flame dance in the dark as he kept staring at it while remembering his last happy birthday.
"Happy birthday, Ezra!" His parents said with glee as the seven year old smiled. They played games and opened presents. Yet, Ezra's favorite part was blowing out the candle and making a wish. His mom brought over a cupcake with a candle that was lit.
His parents sang happy birthday and his father said, "Go on and make a wish cause it might come true." Ezra looked at both of his parents enjoying the wonderful moment. Then he lean down to blow the candle out when the door was pried open.
Blasted fire rained in the house and screaming of a crying child echoed in the night. Then everything was silent as Ezra's parents were arrested leaving the seven year old all alone.
Ezra didn't know that he was crying until he snapped out of his thoughts. He quickly wiped the tears away and looked at the candle again.
He closed his eyes and repeated the words his father said, "Make a wish and it might come true." Ezra opened his eyes again feeling childish of doing this. He carefully thought of what he wanted most then sadly looked at the candle.
"I wish I had a family again," he said and took a deep breath before blowing the candle out. The room went dark as the aroma of smoke filled his nostrils. Ezra sighed and stood up going to his bed. What he didn't know was that his wish was coming true.
