Chapter Two: The Arrival of Ruki

The Birth if Rekiya: How was she saved?

For three decades, Akugba had been fighting Gabatha to give up their small kingdom and merge it with theirs. To live under them and also work for them. Akugba Kingdom had threatened them several times but they said no.

And many times, their houses were burnt down, their women taken away as slaves, sex workers, also resulted to the death of their kings. All because they disagreed to come under Akugba. Akugba Kingdom thinking they were trying to compete with them despite being the largest and wealthiest Kingdom of all.

When Kukute took the Gabatha throne, he felt incapable and was angry every time they were defeated. He knew his death was near if these men continued defeating them. It had always being like that, and these people never wasted time in choosing their next King rather than looking for a way to stop Akugba men from invading them.

When Kukute's daughter was taken with the slaves by the Akugba men, they expected Kukute to plead with them and agreed to their terms and conditions, but later they realised Kukute was not the King that wanted to sit on that throne for few years. He was not only stubborn and selfish, but hated the Akugba Kingdom with all of his might. Immediately his own daughter was kidnapped, Kukute's roar was heard in all other Kingdoms as he became a terror in his first decade as a King.

Then he announced. "In Gabatha Kingdom, any girl child conceived or given birth to after this declaration is to be killed. Anyone that chooses to keep a girl child and disobey the King shall be killed with all his family. Every son from the age of seven is to be sent to the training field to be trained to fight for the victory of the land. Any mother that refuses to obey the King's order shall be killed with the rest of her family. When the sons are of age to marry, the woman they are able to bring from the battlefield can be their wives and slaves. Any spy suspected from these women shall be killed. I the King of Gabatha has spoken."

Since that day, Gabatha had been a Kingdom full of strong men who had been trained to be fighters, warriors, bringing victory to the land. No son from any household that can't hold a sword to fight. They protected the Kingdom and became powerful. They became known by other Kingdoms for having most of the strongest men in all Kingdoms. They were hefty men, huge men who had been trained notoriously to fight for their survival.

To make sure no girl child was given birth to, the King knew of every pregnancy in the Kingdom. For if it was a girl, they were immediately aborted or slain to death after delivery. For if it was a boy, the King provided the family with everything the child needed. Money, food, clothes, gifts, and most especially, sword.

In Otula's house, the delivery woman next to Reba bent closer to Reba who was close to tears with fear written all over her face. "Reba," the delivery woman next to her said. She ran to Reba side the moment she saw the baby to tell Reba what the gods showed her. Of course, she never knew it was a girl child, but still she was happy for Reba, and for the Kingdom. "Reba, the gods have delivered into your hands one of them. A powerful child who will take the curse on we Gabatha women away." She smiled, encouraging Reba too, who managed to stop crying. "But Reba, I see evil surrounding this child. Every soul that comes for her will have a tragic ending. I don't know how powerful she will become, but I know this is an ancestor that has returned, and in her left hand lies the power that could destroy anyone she wants to destroy, and anyone she wants to fight against or fight for."

Reba looked up at the delivery woman whose voice was so calm. She knew these delivery women were so powerful, but she never knew they could see the future of any child they delivered.

"Reba," the delivery woman called back her attention. "You have to protect this child, for the wicked people in this world will hate her. They must not know of her powers, because if they do, it will be hard to fullfil her mission." The delivery woman touched the cheek of the sleeping baby, and she loved how soft and radiant it was. "I wish there is a way I can erase all her misfortunes, but I can't Reba. She is bound to have a sad journey." The delivery woman got up.

She came next to her partner standing, and slowly, the two went on their knees. "Reba, the gods have revealed to me that you are carrying a Royal Majesty. And only when she fulfilled this mission can she save Gabatha from this curse. If she doesn't survive, this curse can never be erased. This is what the gods revealed to me." Then immediately the two women bowed, their heads touching the hard ground of Reba's room.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang on the door.

"My women, the King sent his Chiefs. Bring out my son for them to see. They want to confirm . Let them see with their eyes that the gods have blessed me with my own son from the woman I love and cherish."

The two delivery women stared at each other. Their hearts went out to Reba who held unto her babies, and never planned to separate from them. They were confused. Reba wasn't saying anything, and they knew if discovered that Reba gave birth to a girl child, everyone in the room will be killed including the child.

Silence danced into the room. Reba's heart was beating so fast that the delivery women could listen against their will. Suddenly, there was a strange noise from the window side. Fear creeped into their hearts. When it came again, the delivery women gasped for breath, holding unto each other while Reba had her eyes closed. Their hearts almost left their body because all that came to their mind was…the King has gotten the news. They've been caught. They will all have to die.

"Reba it's me Ruki. I have arrived from Akugba." The voice came, and everyone shot their eyes opened. Their hearts which they were about to take themselves came back to life. The voice continued. "Reba, I got your message about the dream you had. We all know your dreams come true. My dear sister, I have come to save your child. Give her to me and let me be on my way." There was a strange pause. "Reba, you told me to knock on your window twice. It is me your sister, Ruki."

Immediately, the way Reba jumped from the mat made the other women wondered where the strength came from. The tears that drenched Reba's beautiful face suddenly made her even more admirable. She laid her babies very gently and hurried to the window.

The gods really love her. The delivery women panicking earlier were now closed to tears as they watched the happy smile on Reba's face as she jumped up in excitement. Truly, the gods have really come to save Reba's child, and save them.
