Chapter Twenty three: Dear Ruki, I'm in Akugba.

You are reading The Birth of Rekiya ❤️

The door to one of the most beautiful chambers in Akugba Palace burst open. It was said to be the most beautiful, and it belonged to the most feared concubine in Agbobi's palace. More than half of the maids in the palace hated her, and never got into trouble with her. The short maid hurried inside, going on her knees immediately.

"My Lady, Princess Rekiya–"

"Who is your Princess?"

The maid before Barbra shrank away to the ground even more, as if she could get any smaller than her actual body size. Lady Barbra threw the fresh from fire hot tea in her hand at the maid before her. Cruelty dancing in her eyes, already part of her.

"My Lady!!!" The maid yelped in pain, the side of her face burned very quickly. No one told her to keep her mouth shut immediately.

"Next time, think before you speak. You poisoned my tea with that name. What is it? Speak!"

"My Lady," the maid's voice no longer carried the enthusiasm she came with as she struggled in pain. "Today at Prince Dermin's palace, we saw that Rekiya was not feeling too well. She looked extremely tired. While they were eating, the—"

"So this is the nonsense you brought to me this early morning." Barbra rolled her eyes and hissed. "You are stupid. Get the hell out of my sight, now!"

"My Lady," a soldier hurried in and bowed slightly before raising his head very quickly. "My Lady, Thopar just went in with an old man."

"Hmm...an old man?" Barbra cocked her brow. "So?" She asked, almost bored and tired. It was the same nonsense everyday. Reporting stories that wouldn't be of help to her.

"Thopar refused to let us search the man. Even the commander could not."

Barbra's head turned very quickly in the soldier's direction. The information seem to be more interesting than she thought. "Thopar refused?" She asked again. Even the commander could not search him.

Barbra rose to her feet. "Do anyone not know who this man is? Wait! No one could even touch his body at all? Is he from the city? Did he dress like one of our men here?" Barbra added question upon question, letting the soldier watch quietly, getting a little more nervous because the only answer he had for Barbra could get her even more angry. The woman could go insane at the mention of the Crown Prince. It was as if she lived to torment him. She doesn't even try to hide her hatred for the Crown Prince and always wanted to know what was going on with him.

"My Lady, I'm afraid that no one knows who this man is." The soldier said firmly, maintaining his distance before her long hands reached him. She was known for treating her workers harshly, giving no respect to anyone. It was his duty to her, to save his family living outside the palace.

Barbra glared angrily. She raised her shoulders clapping her hands together. "He's becoming more unbearable. Who do we know they brought into the palace now?" Barbra faced the soldier whose height was way taller than her. She looked into his eyes. "We have to find that man and kill him. We have to. Has he been out?"

"No, My Lady. He hasn't come out."

"Let's go."

•••••••••

"What?" Ruki stared at the paper her trusted bodyguard held towards her.

"Someone brought it to the palace gate today."

"Someone." Ruki came around her bodyguard and reached for the paper. If she was going to receive any letter, it would be through the secretary office of Akugba. And never would someone bring her a letter to the palace gate. This was the reason Ruki had not opened it.

"Did that someone say anything?"

"Tell them to give it to Ruki. One of the concubines in the palace."

Ruki frowned at what her bodyguard just said. Whoever sent the letter knew who she was. Ruki proceeded and opened the paper. When Ruki did, she froze, all colour drained from her face. The handwriting she saw was not the problem. They were always writing to each other, so seeing the handwriting, she knew where the letter came from. Her eyes became so bright seeing it was her sister until she read the first sentence.

Dear Ruki, I'm in Akugba.

What! Without telling her first? Ruki's shoulders dropped, and immediately the piece of paper fell to the ground. She wasn't even done reading the whole thing. Realising her sister came to Akugba without informing her worried her. Ruki turned to her bodyguard. "Who collected this paper first? Did anyone before you?"

"No," he responded, wondering why the sudden change of expression on Ruki's face. "Other soldiers were there when he came by though."

Ruki made no response. She picked up the piece of paper and continued to read. All over again.

Dear Ruki, I'm in Akugba.
I also came with my daughter.
Can you please send me a portrait of Rekiya. I would like to see what she looks like. And I would like to introduce her to her younger sister, I have also named Rekiya. We have a lot to talk about my dear sister. From Reba.

Ruki read over and over again that her eyes became so wet. She hoped Reba was doing well. Rereading the part where Reba had mentioned daughter. When did her sister give birth to a female child in Gabatha Kingdom? The news that got to her was that Reba had delivered a bouncing baby boy. Handsome and almost everyone loved him in Gabatha. Although, he falls sick almost every time. His body is so fragile and he's treated differently from the rest of the boys. Why was she now reading my daughter? Did her sister give birth to a girl child and disguised her to be a boy? And she didn't tell her the truth for years. For years!

Ruki calculated the years of the child from when Reba announced her son to her till the very present. It was seven years already. He should have clocked seven some days ago. The exact age boys of Gabatha kingdom were sent to the camp to start training. A tear rolled down Ruki's cheek. She could not hold the tears that came down immediately. Reba must have hidden that because she didn't want her to go through the same pain she went through the first time. What lie would she tell the King again? Where would she say she found another baby? Ruki was beginning to cry. She couldn't help her sister this time around. Reba must have suffered. Reba must have lived these past years scared and troubled at heart. Why was Reba the only one going through these calamities?

Ruki squeezed the paper in her hand into a hard ball and threw it somewhere on the floor. She had refused to raise her head. "You may go," she said to her bodyguard.

When her bodyguard left, Ruki finally raised her head. She sat on the floor and wept. How would she protect her sister? What lie would she tell the King for her? What would she say happened to her sister that made her come to Akugba. Maybe she would have to hide it. Maybe she shouldn't tell anyone her sister is in Akugba to keep her safe. If anyone reports to Kukute that Reba's child is seen living as a girl and not a boy, her entire family will be killed for lying to the King. And if she decides to bring Reba and her child into the palace, how would they explain her child being a girl when Gabatha women only give birth to male children. She can't! She can't let anyone know!

They would have to live their lives separate.

But first, where is Rekiya? She needs to find an artist immediately tomorrow morning.

"Rekiya!"

No response.

"Rekiya!"

No response.

Silence answered her repeatedly, until one of her maids rushed into her chamber.

"My Lady, Princess Rekiya has not returned."

"What!" Ruki exclaimed. By this time of the day. Ruki's head turned to the direction of her window. The stars in the sky were the light filling the palace surroundings, but still, everywhere seemed to be consumed by darkness.
