The afternoon sun arose already, beating the market men and women of Akugba who had come to the market to sell again. The road to the market was bustling and extremely busy. The smell of baked bread filled the air, calling upon the innocent people who had no money to purchase the tasty fine bread aside from what they had in mind to buy.
The sound of iron hitting iron followed the Crown Prince carriage even when they had passed the blacksmith men a long time. The voices of some market women and men could be heard, calling and pleading upon people to buy what they were selling.
Rekiya had been quiet. Her pretty face looked unhappy. Her ever shinning eyes were red. She was sitting inside the carriage with Tia, including the bald head and the Crown Prince. She was lost in her thoughts, thinking about the slap that had happened. The Queen loved her mother, as well as Rekima and her so much, Rekiya thought. The Queen many times had blessed them with gifts and money. The Queen had favoured her mother many times that in their palace, they respected and honoured the presence and absence of the Queen like a god. So why does she feel something was not right. Why do the Queen suddenly announced Aliya as her perfect daughter for the Crown Prince. Of course, she expected Prince Dermin to pick the woman of his choice. Or did he really like Aliya? Rekiya sighed. She really couldn't wait for the Crown Prince to dismiss her. Whatever he decided to tell the King, she does not mind. Didn't he hate her. His eyes were always very cold whenever he looked at her.
He never smiled in her presence. Not even in her absence. To her, he looked like an unhappy child living in pain. Who knows if father had come to beat him again, Rekiya thought, and her heart went out for someone who never uttered a word from the slap she had received. Only Yasmine, Thopar and Tia consoled her.
Rekiya stole a quick glances at the Crown Prince whose attention was outside the window. He insisted Rekiya followed them. It was before that Rekiya had been obsessed about seeing what the outside looked like, but not anymore. The only reason she had accepted was because of the young girl she met. The young girl had been on her mind. Her look alike. If she told mother, she would have helped her find the girl. But mother must never know she stepped out of the palace already. She grabbed the opportunity anyways. It was another opportunity for her to meet the girl again. She was indeed drawn to the girl. She was and she had no explanation for it.
Rekiya's gaze rested on the Crown Prince again that Tia knew who she was staring at him. He looked healthier this time. He ate so much toady. He also refused to accept his teacher's answer again today. Though his face still never wore a smile, talk less of a happy one. Today while he was bathing, Rekiya noticed the wounds on his back were healing unlike when they looked fresh. She had felt for him then. She had truly felt for him. Rekiya wondered if the Crown Prince knew why she had fallen into his bathing pool. Could it be they have gotten to know someone was poisoning his medicine and his bathing pool, Rekiya thought.
Have they found the culprit?
Could the Queen be aware?
Could it be the Queen thought she had done something to her son?
Why would the Queen threaten her and warned her not to call Prince Dermin her brother?
Was he not her brother?
Rekiya's mind was full.
Her mother told her Yasmine came to check on her when she was resting during the day. Also, the next day. Also, the following day. She wondered how come she never came when she was out playing in the compound.
She also never heard if some people were caught by the Crown Prince.
Not even from the Queen side did she hear if some maids were caught and punished.
Everyone was so quiet.
Rekiya accepted the Crown Prince doesn't know anything then, because if he does, he would have thanked her. Not as if she expected that, but that should have been done. Mother had told her and Rekima many times to be appreciative no matter how little the help may be. She couldn't believe she risked her life. What was she thinking?
What if she had died?
She would never do that again, she promised.
Rekiya looked down at the small cloth she held in her hands, her fingers admiring the designs on it. "Thank you, Tia," she returned it to the rightful owner. Tia shook her head. "I made it for you."
Surprised. "For me?" Rekiya gave a smile that lit up the hurt expression on her face. "You made it yourself? You make designs like this? As in you can sew too?"
Tia nodded and chuckled seeing the unbelievable expression on Rekiya's face. "I can weave hair too," she confessed.
Rekiya smiled, holding Tia's hand. "I have always wanted to learn to sew for mother too. My dear teacher, when should I come learning?" Rekiya bowed.
Tia laughed before she knew it, raising Rekiya's head. That got Prince Dermin's attention, and his eyes stared admiringly at Rekiya who was now engrossed with her dear friend, Tia.
"I heard they were put in a sack and thrown into the river."
Rekiya turned. The voice was masculine. Very thick and bold. He had said nothing to her or to anyone until now. He was just as quiet as the Crown Prince. But the bald head could actually speak. No, Soto. His name is Soto, Rekiya reminded herself. Looking through the window, Rekiya understood what they were saying.
"Some of them died. But a few survived because they are used to the river. That's also the only way since Gabatha soldiers burnt their boats. They said someone brought up the idea to save the children. They were secretly thrown into the river. They were the only ones that escaped death."
Prince Dermin's eyebrow came down in a frown. "From the same Kingdom that desire freedom? Isn't that the same Kingdom a female child is being killed? What's the name of the bastard again?"
"Kukute," Soto responded very quickly. The two staring at the young boys and girls roaming around to beg for food in their dirty, torn clothes that must have been worn through out their journey to Akugba.
Prince Dermin turned his face back to the Soto. "The King has become selfish lately. What's his problem?"
"What do you expect from a King who kill his own people. If you are saving your Kingdom means killing your own people, then who are you saving the Kingdom for?"
"Same person who fought for peace, now you are fighting small villages because they couldn't submit to you. But how the hell father wants me to help these people?" Prince Dermin lamented and immediately the carriage came to a halt, throwing them back.
Rekiya who had listened to their conversation suddenly became curious about the Kingdom. Gabatha kingdom? She heard the name from her Mother many times, but Mother never told her there was a wicked King who had been killing his own people. Why would anyone kill his own people? Why the female children? Rekiya who was in a hurry stepping out of the carriage with Tia had her wrist gripped by no one else but the concerned Prince.
Rekiya stared into his eyes and for a moment she was lost in them. Rekiya managed to point at the young girl who was giving out bread to beggars. She never expected to see her so soon, but she did. Prince Dermin finally looked away from Rekiya to where she was pointing at. Immediately, she got the surprise look she expected from him. But of course, two surprise looks came instead. Soto also stared at her. The girl was her look alike. Rekiya had no tangible reason, but something kept drawing her to the girl.
"Your Highness, I must not lose that girl. I am curious about her. I have to follow her. I know you have seen how much she looks like me. I want to know where she had come from."
The carriage moved while Rekiya was still struggling to remove her wrist. Her lashes came up serving Prince Min an angry look. For someone who had offended her already. She was about to lash out at him when she saw someone familiar next to a carriage. The carriage which was moving gently behind the girl. Rekiya's eyes were obviously curious seeing one of the maids from the palace. She had seen the face many times and knew which palace she belonged to.
It doesn't sit well with her.
One, that type of carriage shouldn't be taken by any royal family. It was meant for commoners.
Two, the maid would never be recognised as a palace maid because of her dressing. Why was she disguising herself with that wig, wearing a dress that belonged to the commoners?
She could tell who was in the carriage without going down to confirm. The Crown Prince released her wrist. Rekiya met his eyes. He saw the carriage first. When Rekiya sat down back, she poked her head out of the window fully. Why was Concubine barbra following the girl? Why had she come out of the palace hiding her identity?
