Chapter twelve: The new friend

The Birth of Rekiya: Another power revealed itself.

The celebration for the new ladies who have come of age continued in the festive court. After Rekiya, the other ladies came in and were honoured and blessed by the King. Before the Crown Prince were few young ladies who had been chosen by the Queen to join the women serving in the Crown Prince chambers. They knelt before Prince Dermin, bowing their heads to greet him.

From where the Queen was, she watched hoping her son would take interest in any of the Ladies, but he didn't even spare any of them a glance till they settled behind him.

"My King!" Labi, the right hand man of the King yelled again, bringing every other voice quiet. "Prince Toro seeks your permission to play for you and your people."

Barbra from where she was adjusted on her seat, and peeped to look at the Queen before she had a huge smile on her face, seeing how happy the King was at the name of her son being mentioned. The quick gesture of Agbobi's hands showed how much he had missed their son. When the King's eyes met with Barbra to greet her, the pride on her face was evident as she smiled at Agbobi, with a short nod acknowledging his greeting before speaking one after the other. "My King, your son deserves this praise. His weak mother deserves none. I am happy he has grown to be just like his father. That's enough pride for me as his mother, My King, for he could become anything just by taking after his father."

The King praised her, but immediately looked away from her the moment Prince Toro walked into the festive court. This time, it was the women doing the worst. They gasped but couldn't yell so as not to be seen as uncultured ladies. Their giggles, smiles, laughter, fanning their faces, readjusting themselves on their seats were enough for everyone to know Prince Toro had brought this upon the unmarried women of Akugba.

He was tall, but his height at nineteen, was just the same height as Prince Dermin at fifteen. Prince Toro was putting on thin clothing that revealed his hard chest and firm muscles. He had left the palace since he was eighteen insisting he wanted to go to the battlefield with other warriors. Seeing him back alive was the joy of Agbobi, and Barbra wouldn't have the level of peace of mind she had if not because both mother and son were always writing to themselves.

"Father, I have returned. I am happy to see you even more agile than I left you."

The King laughed, coming down from his throne to hug his second born who had returned from a long journey. Prince Toro was so dark that the King could barely recognised him, but will a father never recognise his son? It was impossible as Prince Toro hugged Agbobi who lifted him up from his knees.

Rekiya watched how pride sat all over the women's faces. Even the Chiefs. When she turned to where the Scholars were, their eyes shone so brightly, including their lips parting to give a boastful smile on everyone's faces. Could it be possible that no one has ever heard of Prince Toro? Even Rekiya knew how intelligent everyone said he was. How agile. He was the Prince that finished all his classes at age thirteen. He was said to be the pride of all scholars for how intelligent, polite and reserved he was.

When Prince Toro pulled out his sword and began performing with the other three fighters, he was the perfect definition of a warrior in the presence of everyone. It could be seen on everyone's faces that Prince Toro was loved. To Rekiya, he seemed like the chosen one.

Rekiya peeped on Prince Dermin and on his face, she could see that Toro's skills didn't even move him. She must be wrong, cause his face was just there. No new expression than his already hard expression. Then suddenly, Rekiya suffered an instant pain in her head. She had never felt a pain so horrible and painful as this one. Why was she feeling this way? Faces were beginning to appear in her head. She shut her eyes closed to shut them out, but before she knew it, pictures were coming to her head even more.

Places she had never been before appeared and she was there watching. When she opened her eyes despite the pain disturbing her peace. It was Prince Toro. Then her eyes found the woman she had seen. It was his mother. While Rekiya tried not to allow those pictures stay in her head, she saw them. Under the dark clouds, thunder strikes the lives of Akugba people to death. Rivers, streams moved before Rekiya, and immediately it turned into thick blood, with lives of young men and women swimming in them.

When Rekiya opened her eyes to look at Prince Toro again, his lovely eyes seemed really dark and dead to humanity. Why was she just seeing that? No! Why was she seeing things? When Rekiya looked at Lady Barbra, hers was full of covetousness. And then, Rekiya saw something else. Prince Toro's sword was dripping with blood, and beside him was his mother who knelt down to his sword, wiping the sword clean, that no one could smell blood around it. What does that mean? Rekiya moaned, trying to hold her pain.

"Rekiya what is wrong with you!"

My sister, that's my sister! Rekiya said to herself, and the whole pain was gone.

Trying not to let people around them hear her. "Rekima, this pain just came from nowhere." Rekiya said to her sister. "Go, I will tell you and Mother when we get back."

From where Ruki was, she had seen Rekiya fighting so hard at something. The pain was evident in her daughter's eyes. When Ruki saw Rekiya looking at Prince Toro, and as well looking at Barbra, she knew another power of Rekiya had revealed itself. She had sent words to Reba when she realised that Rekiya's power despite being hidden from her revealed itself to her. Though every time she came home telling them she could do this, Ruki would have to lie that she and Rekima could do that as well. That it was their little secret and she had to keep it.

Ruki had intentionally written to Reba that whatever she was going to send, she needed to send three. Truly, the bracelet had worked. Anytime Rekiya had it on her wrist and didn't take it off, no matter what she used her left hand for, the power never revealed itself. Now, Ruki had no idea the power that had revealed itself to Rekiya again.

The young Lady next to Rekiya turned to her after she couldn't take it anymore. "I'm sorry your highness, I can't breathe sitting next to you. You are so beautiful, and you've been smiling all through until now. Are you okay?"

Rekiya chuckled. Was she supposed to take that as a compliment? Another truth was, she had really admired the lady next to her too. Her brown skin was shining excessively. She wondered what she used to rub her skin. Parts of her body were opened unlike her. "I don't know, should I say thank you? But I'm fine," Rekiya responded and the two laughed.

Rekiya finally got comfortable and smiled at her. "What is your name?"

"I'm Aliya," she replied. "Can I serve you as I serve the Crown Prince too."

Rekiya tried not to laugh so hard. "No Aliya. We are serving the Crown Prince together. I don't mind if you will be my friend from today. I don't have friends. Mother and Rekima had been my friends."

Aliya's teeth revealed itself, and it was then Rekiya realised Aliya who had complimented her never really smiled this big since she sat next to her. Aliya, who had forgotten she needed to comport herself in the festive court, brought her hand forward. "Princess Rekiya, thank you so much."

Rekiya blushed. Then moved closer to Aliya, whispering. "If you really want us to be very close friends, as in close friends, whenever we are outside the royal gathering, Rekiya sounds more beautiful in my ears. I don't think you will like being called the Crown Prince maid, cause Aliya sounds more like the most beautiful name in this whole world. I heard mothers give out beautiful names to the daughters they love so much."

Aliya's eyes showed admiration, and she hugged Rekiya before she realised it. She admired Rekiya the moment she spotted her. She was beautiful. Her appearance was grand. It was the reason she had chosen the seat next to Rekiya when the rest squeezed themselves into the tiny space just behind the Crown Prince.

No doubt, Rekiya could tell Aliya was pure at heart, and she couldn't help but laugh quietly when she released her and said. "Sorry Princess."

"Well, I don't think we are destined to be friends."

Aliya smiled. "You are right, Rekiya sounds more beautiful."

"I tell you." Rekiya bragged, and the two laughed.
