Rekima jumped to her feet.
The beads.
The beads should never be broken.
The beads rolled on the floor and were rolling away before her eyes.
Rekiya! Her head screamed. Her chest rose in panic, not knowing what to do. Mother had told her the beads must never be broken. If broken, it meant Rekiya was in danger.
Rekima had locked herself up in the room since her mother left. Scared wasn't the word. She was frightened. Upset. Terrified. Terrified of life itself. Upset about how wicked people can be. What if her mother never returned? Those who killed Reba could also be after her mother. Rekima had never been so frightened in her entire life. She was greatly affected by Reba's death when she learned how she died. How would Rekiya ever live if she finds out her mother was killed before her eyes? That she didn't get to meet her mother properly because she died right before her eyes.
And was an awful death.
How would she live on with that memory?
Rekima had cried herself to sleep. Her face looked like the one stung by bees. Her mother was right. Rekiya had only them. They had to do everything they can to protect her. Rekima felt so bad Rekiya didn't get to meet her real mother. Her poor sister. Always so happy. Innocent and free.
Still holding unto the portrait of the woman who gave birth to her mother. She was about to finally see who it was when the beads broke free from her hand.
"Rekiya!" Her loud voice alerted the house hastily.
The whole house shook under the maids' feet in Ruki's palace as they ran to the door Rekima had locked herself in since the night her mother left. She came face to face with the maids at the door before they could even knock.
They gasped seeing someone who does not look like their princess. Face swollen and completely unrecognized. What has she done to herself? Their minds gambled on many thoughts.
"Where is Rekiya?" The panic in her voice changed the maids' countenance. Worry filled their eyes hearing the name Rekiya despite how their hearts went out for Rekima too.
"My Lady," one of the maids quickly responded. "What is the matter? Rekiya--"
"Where is she!" The beast in Rekima's voice arose as tears rolled down her face. Fear danced with relaxation in her almost blinded eyes, shocking all the maids who became frightened. Worried. Interested. Concerned. Also thought the Princess needed to be taken care of after locking herself up.
They were taking too long to answer her.
This was not the response she wanted.
Rekima could barely even see their expressions and that was the least of her worries. She would never be able to live on if anything ever happened to Rekiya. She would live in constant blame. Constant regret.
"My Lady has gone out with Tia this morning," Rekiya's maid found her voice in haste before others could. "My Lady was completely fine when she left this morning," she added, worrying about Rekiya already, while others had different thoughts running in their heads, wondering what made Rekima so worried.
"Where did they go?"
"They are training the villagers who survived the fight that the Gabatha Kingdom brought upon them. My Lady brought the idea to teach--"
Rekima didn't wait to hear the rest. That was not what she wanted to hear.
She dashed out of the house like a raging fire. She was a hurricane that can never be held down. The big stone that hit her hard to the ground was unable to stop her too. Her swollen cheeks looked uglier with a light scratch, but still kept on running. Running towards one of her mother's male servants. Next to her was Rekiya's maid she dragged by her wrist before she fell.
"I need you to take me there, now! Climb and take me. We must find my sister." A painful tear found its way down as Rekima stared at the maid before her. "Rekiya is in danger wherever she is. Let's go." she pushed the maid inside the carriage, and immediately they settled inside. People moved out of the way seeing the urgency as the horse sprinted towards the palace gate.
•••••••
"Who is that causing chaos in the palace?"
"Your Majesty, it is Princess Rekima."
The Queen turned her head towards the palace gate that swung open at the command of Rekima. She rolled her eyes. A one-sided smile that embraced her gorgeous face troubled the hearts of her maids instead. And that was all. Impossible reaction from the Queen whose heart was more hazardous than her elegant face. It was out of the question. The Queen would have started running helter, skelter. The Queen wouldn't have been so relaxed. Her mind would have been messed up, working herself up to know the reason why Rekima was provoking her for misbehaving in the palace.
How had she become evil when they thought she was looking out for others?
The palace could change who you are when the battle for the throne awakened in the hearts of everyone.
The Queen continued her journey.
The reason she had come out in the first place.
Heading towards the palace prison.
The sight of the dungeon successfully aroused the Queen's expression. She looked sickened by the awful smell of the criminals. The dark corridor that led to who she had come to meet grossed her out. The prison gatekeepers push their heads extremely down to kiss the Queen's feet. One of them ran to collect the Queen's sit she had brought with her.
A neat silky smooth material covered her nose as she sat down.
The Queen sat gracefully with pleasure in her eyes. The smile on her face was her real originality. Disclosing the hate in her eyes. The outrage she felt for the one who glared back at her was no longer something to suppress. The satisfaction of putting her in her place made her pride swell. She deserved it and she was going to make sure she never survived this.
"You must be shocked, Barbra." A proud smile crossed the Queen's face.
Barbara scoffed. Her heart troubled to hold onto her pain and still look unaffected when she was upset. Greatly upset. She glared at the Queen with so much pain in her heart. So much Bitterness. Disgust. Irritation. Pain. Resentment. "I've always known this is who you are."
"Yet you touched my dear son, Barbra. How dare you poison the Crown Prince! How dare you!" The gate in which Barbra was locked disrupted the whole prison room as the Queen banged on it, hard. Everyone jumped on their feet. The power at which the gate moved felt as if everywhere would fall on top of their heads. The Queen's resentment towards Barbra scared everyone once more. The hostility in her eyes was dreadful. Many who watched from a distance had the look of... What? They wanted to know what was going on.
"Did I touch your children? You bastard! You didn't know your place."
"How did you even find out." Barbra was beyond shocked. She was being cautious. She wanted the Crown Prince out. Yes! S
But she didn't go for what could take the Crown prince out of her way hastily. She had gone for an herb that kill slowly. Yet she knew. She agreed the Queen was more dangerous than she had thought. Far more dangerous. Who was she? "So this is how you repay me. And using her sister." she gritted her teeth, furious that she had lost as much as she wanted the Queen in severe pain. "We are both evil after all."
"I was too peaceful for you all." The Queen brought her voice down, the pleasure in her eyes made twice as much as earlier, watching how Barbra lost to her. The pride on Barbra's shoulders and how disrespectful she was because she was from an influential background, irritated her. "I made you have your children Barbra. I made them grow up well. I didn't turn their father against them, but what did I get in return? Plotting the death of my son. How dare you fight for the throne that belongs to my son. Barbra. I'm the Queen of Akugba. I am your Queen. By my position, I am above you in all ways. How dare you bite me! How. Dare. You!"
Barbra trembled with fear when the Queen's gaze rested on her. Oppressing tears threatened to fall from her eyes but she wouldn't allow them. The Queen's words were a slap to her face. The stinking, deadly, dirty, smelly place she was put in for days was a thrash to her image. And that made her clenched her fist in anger. It made her anger aroused with thoughts of killing the Queen if possible, but she couldn't. She was always a step ahead of her. She was the type of woman who step gracefully but bite back when you step on her tail. Why did she ever think she was nice and calm?
Barbra's current situation made her heart throb and her eyes shrivelled in shame. But her pride will always resurrect because she never acknowledges defeat. "You bastard!" It was Barbra's turn to jerk the gate, and obviously, her anger would have broken the gate down if not because they were solid iron. "For someone who killed--"
Barbra began to laugh. To hold back her tears, she laughed. To make them stop, she laughed. To look unaffected, she laughed. Attracting everyone with her laughter was not her intention, but she did and eventually broke down in front of her number one opponent since she came to the palace. "Wait till I come out. My father will come for you."
It was the Queen's turn to giggle. Her laughter lasted more than she wished for it too. She rolled her eyes at Barbra who dwelled in a state of confusion. What a spoilt brat! The Queen got up and stepped back. She rolled her eyes in distaste. "You should have remembered to hide your father as you have hidden the princes. Too late." The Queen paused and one of the male servants that came with her stepped forward.
Barbra saw the tray.
The tray that sent you nowhere but to your death. Your grave.
Barbra's heart sank in fear. Torrent of fear grabbed her by her throat but she still managed to use her voice. "What do you think you are doing!" She yelled as she sprang up to her feet in her cell, moving hastily to the back wall "Take that away from me!"
Had she run mad?
The thoughts ran through everyone's mind as she yelled, screaming at the top of her voice.
It was the tray that carried a cup of poison to take any criminal to their grave. But what happened next shocked everyone including Barbra whose heart could hardly breathe fine.
The Queen licked her lips and dropped the empty cup.
Her gaze came up, slowly resting on Barbra who seemed to be gasping for breath. Tears cascaded down her eyes and for one day in her entire life, she feared for her life. The Queen rolled her eyes at her and a vile smile appeared at the side of her lips. "This is your last. And this is your end, Babra. You shouldn't have messed with me. In your next life, know your boundaries."
