Chapter thirteen: The Crown Prince
The Birth of Rekiya: The Crown Prince wears one colour.
"The Crown Prince bathes in hot water every day, and there are some herbs he uses every day."
"The Crown Prince doesn't eat cold food."
"The Crown Prince loves reading poems, including story books. Just put one by his side before leaving every night. No other maid touches his books, but I'm giving you that duty to do till you can help with the rest."
"The Crown Prince wears only one colour, except he is attending any celebration, but still, he wears that one colour under."
Out of everything Yasmine had been saying, that one colour syndrome caught Rekiya's attention. Rekiya wasn't paying attention to everything Yasmine was saying because she planned to make life difficult for the Crown Prince so he could tell the King to take back his order about her serving him. She didn't need all the rules. Rekiya paused. Who wears one colour for the rest of his life anyways?
Rekiya finally looked up at the woman who had been showing her about. "That sounds strange. What colour is that if I may know?"
"Black." The old maid said, staring at Rekiya in admiration. Seeing the way Ruki had loved Rekiya was beyond everyone's explanation because they knew she was never Ruki's child. Anyone who revealed that would end up dead just like His Majesty had declared. No one, not even the Queen could go against that declaration. Yasmine seemed to know everything about the Crown Prince. But how come she wouldn't when she had been the one taking care of Prince Dermin since the Queen gave birth to him. She knew many things that were not open to others, and it was the reason why she had given Prince Dermin all her love as not just a maid to him but a mother who cared greatly about him.
"But why? He's the Crown Prince." Rekiya wasn't dropping the matter. "Yasmine, you will agree with me that he can wear anything he chooses to wear. Besides, Black can be beautiful, but wearing it almost every blessed day when you aren't mourning. He scares me Yasmine."
The old maid smiled at Rekiya. "My Princess," she said. "Remember what you see in here stays in this room. Your duty is to help Prince Dermin. Starting from tomorrow, you will come early to watch me prepare the Crown Prince bath. You will as well watch me dress him up so you can assist once in a while. Now go in and wear him his belt."
"Uhm!"
Yasmine chuckled at Rekiya's response. "Go to him and wear him his belt," she repeated.
"Brother, Rekiya has come to serve you. Let the door be opened, so that I may come in."
"Brother," she repeated after some seconds.
"Brother," Rekiya said again.
You see. Her looks said it all to Yasmine who encouraged her still.
"Your Highness."
The door was finally opened.
Oh, it's Your Highness till I die. Rekiya said in anger. Whose brother was he anyways?
Before Rekiya was Prince Dermin's right hand man. Trying to be friendly on her first day, Rekiya smiled at the young boy who was definitely the same age with Crown Prince. He was not as tall as the Crown Prince and he had a thin body. Rekiya thought he was good looking, but like master, like servant. Rekiya couldn't help but blame herself even more. It's not his fault. Playing nice to the wrong people is a pain to deal with. Rekiya instantly regretted it. She went straight to the Crown Prince long belt without a glance at him.
What a belt! Rekiya thought.
The belt could serve as a rope to spread clothes with leftover spaces for the next generation to come. Rekiya's heart was full of evil with how she was going to repay this Dummy. Rekiya didn't greet Prince Dermin even when she had another chance, instead she grabbed the belt without waiting to see if she succeeded in retrieving it or not. She walked as if she knew the in and out of the Crown Prince chambers already. But what a pity, when Rekiya turned to walk away, she couldn't tell the belt had been stopped by a nail on the wall, when she decided to drag it forward for the third time, and the belt released itself, she went flying with the rope like she was aiming for the sky.
Rekiya's eyes sought for help from both the Prince and his manservant but got stares in return. When she finally grabbed hold of Prince Dermin's arm for support, it was the biggest mistake Rekiya thought she had ever made. She regretted not allowing herself to fall gracefully. Now, she couldn't even bring herself up without feeling so ashamed. All the pride she came in with flew out of the Prince's beautiful window whose curtail was made with beautiful flowers. How could he be so cold? What manner of a person is this Crown Prince? Rekiya thought, as she had finally brought herself up looking about like she lost something. Her pride maybe. It was hard for her to look instantly at her two enemies.
The Prince must have pushed her with the aim for her to hit the ground, but he must have mistakenly pushed her towards his bed, Rekiya thought. As much as she hated falling, the bed was softer than her mother's own. The benefits of being the Crown Prince were huge. You enjoyed almost everything. Rekiya twisted her arms, she moved her neck left to right, jumped up and turned around. She grabbed the belt again, and came close to Dermin.
As much as Thopar, the Crown Prince's right hand, and trusted servant tried not to laugh, he ended up smiling so big. He had acted mean because he needed to act just the way his master, Dermin was acting. His master saving Rekiya was a sign he cared about his sister a little, and Thopar who couldn't laugh at Rekiya's reaction had to smile to save his stomach from bursting in the room. He understood all Rekiya was doing was for the Crown Prince to hate her and send her away. The truth was, he would have sent words to the King if he never wanted his sister around. He does that, but Thopar saw he didn't. And of course, Prince Dermin didn't move. He didn't smile. He didn't spare Rekiya a glance. He was there, waiting.
Mother come, and help me. Have never seen anyone whose attitude stinks. Rekiya picked up the belt and bowed slightly. "I'm sorry your highness. I've been battling with this illness and neither do I nor mother know what it is. I sometimes don't know how to do things properly." Rekiya said, returning to the front of Prince Dermin. And the moment the belt surrounded him, Rekiya tightened the belt with all her might around the Crown Prince stomach and instantly a yell came from behind her instead. And not the one she wanted to kill.
"Stop! Princess Rekiya you will kill him!" Thopar seized the belt out of Rekiya. The Prince coughed so loud, pain flashed in his eyes. His eyes were instantly red that tears almost came out of them, but he grunted so calmly, balling his hands into a fist, breathing so heavily, trying to take in the pain. When he turned around to move away, Rekiya saw his back. The black material he was putting on was wet from the back. Rekiya couldn't tell how water could have been carelessly poured on his back. This was someone who had thousands of clothes. He would have changed. Any stain. He could have changed. If he decides to change a million times a day, men will gather to sew him another new set of clothes. So how come he was wet and he didn't change?
Suddenly, the door burst open.
"Thopar what is taking you so long to dress the Crown Prince." It was the Queen. She didn't even see Rekiya at all. "Your highness, you haven't take your medicine. I have brought it for you." The Queen's eyes worshipped her son. "Bring it! Must I tell you before you bring it forward!" The Queen yelled at the maiden that hurried behind her.
"Sorry your Majesty."
The Queen only had eyes for her son. "Your highness," she said again, coming slowly behind her son, but the Prince turned very quickly.
"Mother."
"Stop."
"Your highness, you are not healing. Why is your back still wet?" She said in a very soft tone, hoping her son would allow her to see his back, but he turned again.
"Mother, I said stop." His eyes were cold towards his mother and Rekiya couldn't believe what she was watching. He held his Mother, the Queen's hand firmly. "Mother, don't touch me." His voice was firm, with a great command that made the Queen listen and back off.
"Please drink your medicine." The Queen begged.
Rekiya remained in the corner as she watched. She wondered what was going on? Then she remembered Yasmine. Whatever you see in here, stays in the room.
And she hadn't even seen anything. It was only her first day.
