Chapter sixteen: The old wound
You are reading The Birth of Rekiya ❤️
Rekiya was the only one left in the room. She wondered why she was feeling so sad for Prince Dermin. She was supposed to be mad for being pushed by him, but her dry throat worried her instead. She was suddenly thirsty. Her throat was seeking instant liquid like a vampire who needed the taste of blood. She was thirsty, and she wanted to quench it too. Rekiya heaved a sigh. She looked around for anything she might take before walking out there to drink some water.
This was one of the Crown Prince Chambers. One of the places in the palace where food is wasted. Rekiya knew if she was hungry, she only needed to look around and eat up, but she couldn't. Just then, she found those cups sitting in the middle of the table with different kinds of dishes around it. The cups were filled up, and immediately Rekiya grabbed one. Just a little. Very little. She promised herself. She shouldn't be caught using his cup, so Rekiya raised the cup almost to the level of her nose to pour. One gulp was like a sudden burst pipe forcing down her throat. Plans changed. She had almost the whole liquid in her mouth. She regretted it.
"Rekiya."
She froze. She had been caught. Using the Crown Prince's cup. The laughter Rekiya heard next softened her body. She regretted choosing to drink from Prince Dermin's table. One; the drink was bitter than anyone's problem in a Kingdom that would taste so bitter if it were to be an herb. Her mouth formed what she could not describe as she moved it around to console herself. Two; she realised it was the Medicine the Queen was always bringing for the Crown Prince. Her biggest mistake. Anyone would really hate to drink this.
More laughter filled the room as Rekiya turned her spoiled mouth and squeezed face towards Aliya. Her mouth opening and closing, blowing air at every corner her mouth turned to like an electric hair dryer.
"Your secret is safe with me." Aliya chuckled. "But I thought they said you lost a leg. The way they talked about the Crown Prince pushing you, I didn't expect to see you drinking from his cup."
Rekiya dropped the cup and gave Aliya a puzzled look. "Are you saying the same maids who were standing by the door knew the Crown Prince pushed me? How? As in, how come? How?" She was perplexed by the information herself.
Aliya chuckled. "Princess, the wall has ears."
Rekiya agreed with a quick laugh. "My dear Aliya, I will never believe anything these maids talk about. They can kill with their mouth. But did they say I hit my head? They might have seen what I never felt."
Aliya laughed so hard before she could finally answer. "They are really particular about your leg Princess."
"Okay then, let me give them a show."
The next thing Rekiya did only made Aliya laugh so hard as they stepped out. Instead of walking gracefully, Rekiya would walk a little too fast and jump, scaring the rest of the maids around her as if she saw something frightening. When she jumped and ran, they ran and jumped too, thinking there was really something pursuing Rekiya. She scared their lives to death, and the only painful part was, she couldn't laugh. She had to be serious for them to believe her.
Aliya had enough laughter, but Rekiya wouldn't let her stop laughing. Now, the same maids who talked about her losing her legs would go back and talk about something else. How the Princess they thought lost her leg was busy jumping around the palace. The gods performing Miracle!
After Rekiya had accomplished her mission, the two friends walked side by side. Rekiya finally had the chance to check what Aliya looked like. Her brown hair was in a ponytail. The mouth was wrapped and the hairpin on her head had lots of beads around it. The beads fell to her back, and little dropped to her forehead. Her white dress covered every part of her body but was left open from her neck to the middle of her burst. Rekiya could guess the size of her burst just by the little opening. Aliya was beautiful. Rekiya thought she looked more like a Princess than her who could barely walk in her long and oversized dress. Her hair was wrapped in such a way that it will take a battlefield warrior to loosen it. Her mother got some hair wrapping skills.
"So is this how you all dress now?"
Aliya nodded. "We have to get the Prince's attention. The Queen said we have to dress beautifully to attract him, but he never raised his head this morning to stare at anyone when eating. I heard he said he isn't going to marry."
Rekiya smiled at Aliya. "From those same maids who said I died?"
Aliya chuckled. "They said you lost your leg?"
"And did I?"
"So you mean they are lying?"
Rekiya raised her brow. "Come," she held Aliya's wrist. "My dear Aliya, I'm going to have to steal you from the Crown Prince, cause I want to take the most beautiful lady from the Crown Prince's chambers to mother."
Aliya's smile became huge. "I will marry you right away if you were to be a man."
Rekiya giggled. "And that is the kind of man you should marry."
Aliya nodded with a smile. "I will miss you when I eventually leave the palace. Take me to meet Mother."
Rekiya never had friends, and Ruki never encouraged her to, because she was scared Rekiya's secret might be known, and be revealed to such friends who could mistakenly tell their mothers and their fathers. Children barely tell lies. They could barely hide things from one another. This is the reason why Ruki had been so protective of Rekiya and never allowed her to leave her chambers. Ruki sat there speechless when Rekiya stood before her with a big smile plastered on her face, referring to Aliya as her friend.
"Aliya, this is my mother."
Ruki stared at the two girls. She recognised Aliya so well. She was the daughter of the Chief of Justice. One of the Chiefs supporting Barbra. How could she tell her daughter they can't be friends? Aliya had only entered the palace because they wanted someone very close to be giving them feedback of how the Crown Prince was doing since he hated maids around him. How could a father do that to his daughter? His own child! Ruki thought.
Suddenly, Ruki's attention was snatched from the two girls before her, to Rekiya's leg. Ruki raised her brows at Rekiya. "Why are you bleeding? For a wound that has healed for many years, why–" Ruki paused. Something wasn't making sense. She grew taller on her bed as she sat forward. Suddenly struck by fear from her own thoughts. It couldn't be. Terrified and scared as her hands came up to her mouth. She moved them away and got up. "Rekiya." Her face had never looked so worried. "Rekiya, what did you eat! What have you taken from the Crown Prince?"
Had she taken anything? Rekiya thought. What does that have to do with her old wound opening up again?
