Chapter six: Ruki's chamber
The Birth of Rekiya: Ruki's chamber.
Every maid in Ruki's chamber had their hands full. They were seen running in and out. When Ruki was going to meet the King, she had covered her bruised skin, using another clothing to cover her body except for her hair and face which was wet and showed how tired she was.
The shout of cry which came out from Ruki got everyone on their toes. Ruki's back was full of pieces of broken glass, soaked in her own blood, and for every piece of the shattered glass removed out of her skin, it made her let out a yelp, unable to hide her pain this time. This wasn't the kind of pain she would grind her teeth together for. This was beyond her, and slowly, those tears found their way down her full cheeks. Her beautiful, glowing fair face turned tomato red, but unfortunately, a very spoiled one no one would ever take home.
What she had gone through to escape from the hands of the Gabatha men. The pains were worth it. Rekiya came out of there alive. For her, it was worth all she went through.
The shattered glass which was on her knees had penetrated so badly that few maids had to tie her legs down for the female physician to successfully remove them one after the other. It was excruciating. The female physician who was always helping Ruki against the Royal physician she never trusted felt for her, but knew getting those things out were the only way for Ruki to feel better.
Ruki's cry had brought tears down to her maids' eyes. They wondered how she had beared the pain for long while standing and kneeling before the King. Yet full of smiles. Showed no signs of pain.
When Ruki arrived. She had only taken a piece of clothing to cover her bruised body while she ran to the King's court. She had to see the King before anyone notified him she brought in a child outside the palace.
Taking care of their Lady, the maids changed the water which could be mistaken for a person's blood to a clean one. A loud sigh came from Ruki when the torture had stopped and she was left all alone to rest. Tears rolled down from her eyes, staring at Rekiya who was not far from her. Rekiya who was being fed by one of Ruki's maid caught Ruki's eyes and held it. The little baby who was happy to be fed a proper meal after surviving on water all through the journey stared at Ruki. A smile spread on Ruki's face watching her baby girl almost dozing off, yet sucking whatever milk she had left in her mouth before she opened those eyes back again. This time, suddenly, staring at the lady feeding her. Ruki interpreted the look as…how can you let me sleep. Common put that thing in my mouth. At the thought, Ruki chuckled, trying so well not to stress her unwell body.
Her little girl had taken her bath. Rekiya was dressed in a new cloth and wrapped in a very clean shawl. Her long curly black hair spread to the back. Then it came to Ruki's mind she had to keep covering Rekiya's hair just like she had hidden it from the King. In fact, the moment she grew up to a certain age, she would make a veil to cover her face from the men of Akugba. Especially Men who were old enough to be her own father, because they don't mind taking in one hundred and one concubines, and of course, the only time the King disagrees to the idea would be if the old man has no money to take care of the woman he's marrying, or taking the woman against her will. And Ruki knew, that Rekiya was going to grow up so beautiful, that men would line up at her feet.
All the same, Ruki promised to protect Rekiya, and she would in every possible way.
Ruki thought of Reba. How was her sister doing? Reba had shut the window so hard, and as much as she wanted to know what was happening, Ruki had to flee. Though, some of the Gabatha men got to know someone had entered into their Kingdom through the secret bush they had refused to cover up in case of emergency. No one except from the Gabatha warriors knew it led to their Kingdom. Of course, Ruki and her sister Reba knew because they passed there many times with their father.
Ruki was chased down by the men of Gabatha. She didn't walk alone as she had planned to. She left Akugba with her sword knowing there might come a moment when she would need to protect herself. Despite how careful Ruki was, she didn't know how they got wind of her and chased her down. But who was Kukute before he took the throne? Where was Kukute when Reba and Ruki followed their father to the battlefield. Wielding swords like playing hide and seek.
Being given birth to by the warlord of Gabatha, they were trained like men, as many would say, but that changed nothing about who they were. They were women. Women who had been taught to protect themselves, and protect their land. Not when your father looked into your eyes and say…I am born to protect my land. Before I became your father, this land prospered me. This was my life, and still is, and you all better choose your life now. And remember, this life I have chosen protected you all.
The only thing they had done wrong to only feel their father's love that way was because they had lost their mother at babies. Years later, the daughters of warlord became the reason why more women chose to learn how to fight to protect their families, yet Kukute took the throne, and called them weaklings, and said he would fight the war without women. Condemning the same woman who gave birth to him. He's a bastard! Trust me, in two seconds, I will kill your King whose mouth is sharper than any other thing. If the King on the throne before his mother was given birth to, gave such ridiculous announcement, would he sit down on that throne today? That's why, your King is a fool.
Ruki laughed as she she remembered her sister, Reba.
So many things she had missed from staying far away from her sister, Reba. And one of it was the way she talked without any intention to make you laugh but you will. Even though it was quick, Ruki was excited to have seen her sister once again after few years. Ruki made sure she showed no mercy to any of the Mighty, Strong men Gabatha thought they had. Though she had fallen down and rolled over pieces of broken glasses, Ruki was satisfied that none of the men went back unscarred. Of course, they saw her hair kissing the air. Ruki hope they would go to their King and tell him how an ordinary woman had escaped from their hands and how she had given them marks all over their bodies. Dear Mighty men.
Ruki thought of Agbobi's command again. The thought came with curses she reigned on the chiefs. Some of the chiefs acting like they loved the King so much yet supporting the first concubine before her. The more reason why Barbra shoulders would not come down. She had given birth to two princes and some of these Chiefs must have promised her on how they would make one of her princes the Crown Prince.
They wouldn't come to her.
Because she had given birth to a female child.
And their plans to push her niece to the Crown Prince, she had to find out. She had no plans to get involved in palace war, which had started already. Rumors that the Crown Prince is an ugly child. Weak, dumb, a stickler, spoilt brat, and many other names. And if Rekiya was to serve him, she would be caught up in this whole fight.
No.
But how can I save her?
That was Ruki's last thought before she dozed off.
