Chapter eleven: The Crown Prince
The Birth of Rekiya: The Crown Prince and Rekiya.
Suddenly, the crowded room fell quiet. It was understanding that these men had come to watch, but what about the drummers? Drummers who were expected to be drumming as her highness made her way in dropped their senses to join the crowd in staring at the Good-looking Lady. No, good looking Lady was not the word they would have used in describing Rekiya.
Rekiya was irresistible, alluring, and jaw dropping. Many of them struggled to take in breath after forgetting to breathe for a while. Rekiya walked in gracefully with a soft smile electrifying the hearts of the men and women in the room. What manner of beauty is this? They thought. Beauty with grace. Her face wasn't the only gorgeous thing about her. Her smile was one in a million way contagious. They didn't have so much time to allow many thoughts in their hearts as they watched her taking one step at a time. In fact, she was a show stopper. Many things expected to have been done came to a pause as all they did was admire Rekiya.
They heard a lot about the beautiful princess from the maids but they never believed she could be a moonlight in the dark sky for how fair her face was. When they finally looked away from her face to admire many more, they came back to life. There wasn't anything more to watch as Rekiya was dressed from her neck to her toes like a woman being given out for marriage.
"Father, your Princess, Rekiya is here."
"Princess Rekiya! Princess Rekiya!" The drummers finally came back to their senses, doing what they should have done when Rekiya was walking in. Everyone laughed because the drummers had drummed in an unusual way, putting all of their strength this time.
"Kulu." The Chief of Justice tapped his son. "Do not waste the King's wine. It's a sin. Dry it now!"
"Yes Father." Kulu wasted more on the table. When his father called him again, he finally looked down, drying the table with the luxurious cloth he had on. He wasn't back to his senses yet.
A smile of pride took over the King's face as he turned to look at Ruki who had tears in her eyes. Rekiya was now back on her feet waiting before the King. The King gave Ruki a piece of small cloth, and began praising her in the presence of everyone. "My Lady, how do I reward you? Rekima had grown so beautifully, and was well cultured. See Rekiya, so much politeness and beauty carried gracefully."
Rekima where she sat was trying not to laugh. The King's voice was loud enough for them to hear what he was saying. Did he just say Rekiya has so much politeness? Hahaha! Rekima managed to smile, but laughing so hard in her mind as she praised her younger sister in what the King should have called. Odogwuress of the jungle. Her excellency in I will not do it again. Little devil of her generation.
The Queen's laughter brought Rekima back to what was going on. Why was everyone laughing? She could finally hear Rekiya now that everyone kept quiet.
"It is a big blessing that we have come into this world during your reign mother. That is why every Lady in this room can't help but grow into a beautiful woman." Rekiya said, and the heart of the Queen melted.
The Queen turned towards Ruki this time. "My Lady, you have made the King happy for raising an intelligent Lady we can be so proud of. My King," the Queen turned to Agbobi. "May everyone in her family, including the maids of my Lady, be blessed with gifts. Including the King's best of luxuries."
"The Queen has said it all." Agbobi said with pride, laughing. Both Ruki and Rekiya appreciated the King and Queen on their knees. Next to Ruki was Barbra, the first concubine who had two sons for the King. She rolled her eyes and eyed Rekiya from where she was. She didn't deny the fact that Rekiya had grown into a beautiful woman, but of course, smart King, Barbra thought. He would make her serve his son because she wasn't his child anyways. The tears on Ruki's face shocked Barbra for a girl who wasn't even her child. What is her problem? Barbra thought. Was she like this because of the gifts promised to be sent to her? For someone who came from a wealthy home.
Barbra had no issue with Ruki, but she hated it that the Queen and the King spoiled her a lot, and the child whom she had brought from outside was receiving the shine her sons should have been receiving. She once thought if Rekiya was a child to another man, but of course Ruki wasn't pregnant. When she was Pregnant with Rekima, they all saw what she looked like, but no, the stupid her must have seen the girl and brought her to the palace truly. Barbra thought. Seeing the smile on the Queen, it pissed her off to the extent, she tried her best not to even look at the Queen whenever she was talking.
"My people," the King said. "I have named Rekiya the Princess of Peace because her presence brought me nothing but joy the moment I laid my eyes on her. And because of that, I have given her as a guardian to the Crown Prince."
"Ahhhh!" Majority of the young scholars said and the rest laughed. The King knew many would be planning to send gifts for his Princess which is the reason why he wanted to make things clear. Even Agbobi chuckled. "That will not stop her from marrying once she's eighteen."
"Yayy!!!" The young men screamed shamelessly, getting jealous stares from the women around them.
When Rekiya turned, she knew where her place was starting from that day. She hated it. Maybe she hated the one she was going to be serving. The one who had called her mother an ordinary concubine. Lately Rekiya heard the Crown Prince had been repeating classes because he was a slow learner, and wouldn't master everything all at once or even remember the ones he had been taught.
How dare someone like that call her mother an ordinary concubine?
Rekiya still held onto the grudge. She was going to make him pay with the grumpy and cranky attitude of her. Whatever Ruki had told her about the Crown Prince being the most powerful one after the King and Queen, Rekiya kept it in her bag in Ruki's chambers. She had listened to Ruki saying she could be replaced. The moment she was done with her revenge, he would be the one to tell the King to change his words. That was Rekiya's plan as she knelt down before Prince Dermin.
Could it be because it had been five years since she saw him? Rekiya thought. She did hate to admit that for a fifteen year old man, he had grown so well. Useless muscles for someone who cannot fight. Pretty face for someone who lacked manners. A quiet and steady look for someone who had vile thoughts in the depth of his heart. Rekiya do not be deceived. Does someone who speaks in such a manner even deserves to be Crown Prince?
"My Prince," Rekiya finally spoke. "I have come to take my responsibilities to take care of you. You know the siblings' love can never be compared with a maid's love for his master."
"Haha…My Princess grew up really well." The King praised her.
Prince Dermin rolled his eyes. "Please stop the pretense and get up before you throw me out of the court."
No. Rekiya almost burst out laughing, but managed to smile bowing before Prince Dermin as if he said something nice to her. "Thank God you remember. I might just throw you out of the palace this time so I can rest for some days before they find you." Rekiya murmured slowly as she kept on bowing. She stared down at the bracelet around her left wrist. Ever since mother gave her this bracelet, she was never able to use her powers. She would only keep scaring the Crown Prince with what he had seen.
Prince Dermin grabbed her hand, and the look on his face wasn't friendly at all. He had grown to keep his thoughts in a room where whatever he says never matters, and as expected from people who were quick to find fault in him, they began to murmur.
Just complete sufferness for that girl.
See his face. Just like the wooden faces that don't smile which Amodu sells in the market.
"Will you get up and let people stop talking about me?" He said it without whispering this time, his face as hard as how he came into the court.
A smile crossed Rekiya's lips. Even when Prince Dermin grabbed her hand, she could only steal a quick glance at his face and bowed her head slightly before him, because no one was allowed to stare at the Crown Prince too much. "Thank you brother," Rekiya said intentionally, not without rolling her eyes and murmuring "Dummy."
