sink or swim, part two

"So this is where we'll be hiding out from the FBI," Donald explained. He led them through a door into a dark room full of boxes and old tools. "What do you think?"

"I think we should update our tetanus shots," Bree replied.

"Hey, where's Leo?" Chase asked.

"Yeah, I thought you said he was here?" Maeve added.

"Yeah, I kinda lied about that," Donald said. He lifted his hand to his neck, just below his ear. Suddenly, a blue grid flashed across his face to reveal Douglas. "Guess who?"

Maeve, Chase, and Bree exchanged panicked glances.

"Woah!" Adam laughed. "Awesome mask, Mr. Davenport. He looks just like his evil brother who captured us!"

"That is his evil brother," Bree said.

"And he did just capture us," said Chase.

"Oh," Adam breathed.

"I don't get it," Chase said. "I thought you were an ice cube in Mr. Davenport's warehouse. How did you get out?"

"I had a little help," Douglas answered.

"It doesn't matter!" Bree exclaimed. "We'll destroy this rat trap just like your last one."

"Yeah, thanks for that," Douglas said sarcastically. "I didn't even have time to back up my music. Twenty years of up-tempo jazz, gone!"

Maeve rolled her eyes. "I told you to download it to your phone."

Douglas huffed.

Chase shook his head. "Well. I know something else that's about to be gone."

"Yeah!" Adam nodded. "Let's get his reggae too."

"Get him!" Bree exclaimed.

"Now!" Douglas shouted.

Someone emerged from the corner. It was a tall man, wearing a black hooded jacket and a white mask over his face. He raised his hand, blue lightning sparking his fingertips, and within seconds, everything went dark.

-

When Maeve woke up, she was on the ground next to Chase, Adam, and Bree. She felt sore and her head hurt. She and her friends slowly sat up.

"Wakey-wakey, eggs and bac-y!" Douglas cooed. "Actually, it's just an expression. All we have to eat around here are nuts, berries, and... the occasional barbecued iguana."

Adam stood up angrily. "Taunting us with non-existent breakfast foods? You really are evil."

"Wait," Chase said, standing up. "Who was that guy?"

Maeve and Bree stood up. Maeve slowly felt her memory returning, the masked man who had knocked them out. Despite his disguise, she had a creeping feeling she knew who it was.

"Oh, that's right!" Douglas said. "Adam, Bree, and Chase haven't been formally introduced to my partner. Krane, come say hi to the kids!"

Maeve's heart dropped as her father, still wearing the mask, walked up next to Douglas.

"After I was booted from Davenport Industries, I needed cash to continue my research," Douglas explained to Adam, Bree, and Chase. "Luckily, I found a billionaire who believed in me! Say hello to my colleague, benefactor, and all-around bad guy, Victor Krane!"

Krane removed his mask. Maeve took a small step back and grabbed Chase's hand. Adam grimaced at the electrical wires and scars on Krane's face.

"Dude, I have got to get you into a dermatologist," Douglas said, then turned to the kids. "Anyways, it turns out Krane had a kid of his own! You guys already know her."

Bree, Chase, and Adam turned to Maeve, who couldn't take her eyes off of her father. She could feel her heart beating faster with every second that passed.

"Maeve?" Chase asked. "This is your dad?"

Maeve said nothing. It felt like there were thousands of thoughts running through her mind.

Her father stepped forward. "Maeve, why so quiet? Are you so ashamed to have me as a father?"

She swallowed.

Bree turned back to Douglas. "What is that stuff all over his face?"

"You four are no longer the only humans with bionics," Krane answered.

"Krane agreed to fund my work so long as I shared my research with him. He implants every piece of bionic technology I design to make himself more powerful," said Douglas.

"Well, I hope he got a good personality, cause what's on the outside - yikes!" Chase said.

"Enough!" Krane snapped. "Let's go. You have work to do."

Krane walked off and Douglas turned to the kids.

"Isn't he cool?!" Douglas grinned.

"You can cart out all the freaks you want," said Bree. "It's not gonna keep us here."

"Oh, I beg to differ," Douglas smirked. He clicked a button on his desk and two large, spinning circles rose around Maeve, Adam, Bree, and Chase.

"Woah, cool! Giant ring toss!" Adam exclaimed. "Gotta give you credit. You're evil, but fun."

"They're titanium energy rings," said Douglas. "They create an impenetrable force field that nothing can escape."

"I smell a challenge," Adam smiled. He began to walk towards the rings. As his leg approached the edge, a blue force field appeared and shocked Adam. He jumped back in pain.

"I smell burning flesh!" Douglas laughed.

"What do you want with us this time, Douglas?" Bree asked.

"Oh, no," Douglas shook his head. "I'm not falling for that. First I tell you my plan, then something goes wrong, then you use it against me, not gonna happen!"

"Doesn't matter what you're planning," said Chase. "I'm sure that Mr. Davenport is looking for us already. He'll be here any minute to take us home."

"Oh, yeah. There's no place like home," Douglas laughed, grabbing his iPad. "No, seriously. There's not place like home. I blew it up!"

He showed them video footage of a large explosion of the lab.

"You destroyed our lab?" Bree exclaimed.

"Yup. Hope you backed up your music libraries."

"Douglas, how could you?" Maeve asked. She had always known Douglas was evil, but sometimes, he could be... fun. She didn't understand why he would stoop to this level.

But maybe she did know what caused him to do it. Or who caused him to do it.

"You can't talk, Maeve," Douglas snapped, accusatory.

"Calm down," Bree said.

Douglas shook his head. "I gotta say, I'm surprised you guys are friends with Maeve. After what she did?"

"You mean after what you made her do," Chase corrected.

"Hey, that was a long time ago! You guys need to learn to forgive and forget."

Chase simply stared back at Douglas.

"You are such a hypocrite," Maeve narrowed her eyes at Douglas.

"Well-" Douglas stammered angrily. "You cheat at Go Fish!" He stormed back to his desk.

Maeve shrank back a little, trying to calm herself down. Chase gently placed his hand on her arm.

A few moments passed and no one said anything.

"I can't believe the lab is gone," Bree said eventually, shaking her head. "That's our home."

"If anything happened to our family, I will end you," Chase said to Douglas.

"Yeah," Adam nodded. "And then we'll put your body in an old-lady dress so everyone laughs during your funeral!"

"Guys, guys, I understand you're mad," Douglas said. "But what's done is done! So let's focus on moving forward together. First order of business, what do you say we make Mondays family game night?"

"This guy," Adam said. "Still evil, still fun."

"Douglas!" Krane shouted, coming back into the room.

"What?" Douglas groaned.

"What's taking you so long?"

"I'm catching up with Maeve and my kids," Douglas explained.

Krane rolled his eyes. He turned to Maeve, walking up to her. She took a step back.

"Hello, Maeve," he cocked his head.

Maeve breathed out. "What do you want?"

Her father furrowed his brows. "You're my daughter. I can't want to talk to you? I mean, how is school? How are your new friends?"

Maeve said nothing.

"What do you want with her?" Chase asked.

"Chase," Maeve said. She didn't want him to talk, or fight, or do anything that might make her father mad at him.

"Aw, look at you, playing hero," Krane shook his head at Chase and turned back to Maeve. "I gave you everything you could've wanted. And you betrayed me. You turned to their side."

"You gave me everything?" Maeve questioned. "You gave me nothing."

"I don't know where I went wrong with you. I taught you loyalty, and you joined them. But that ends now."

What?

He wanted her to turn back to his side?

"No," Maeve's eyes widened. "No. I am not doing this anymore. I am not working with you."

Her voice was a lot shakier than she meant for it to be.

"Oh," her father laughed. "We're beyond that. I never should have kept you around in the first place."

Maeve paused. "What are you talking about?"

"I never meant for you to stay," he explained. "I only gave you bionics to test them out. Once I was done, I was gonna get rid of you, but I didn't. That was my mistake."

Maeve's gaze trailed off. Sure, Krane had never been a great father, but she always assumed he at least wanted her around. From her peripheral vision, she could see Chase look at her, concerned and sympathetic.

Maeve's dad stepped away and grabbed a small device. He clicked a button, and suddenly, Maeve was teleported outside of the rings.

"It's time for me to do what I should have done a long time ago," Krane said, grabbing Maeve's wrist. He began to drag her away.

"Maeve!" Bree shouted.

"Let her go!" Chase yelled.

"No," Maeve shook her head, fear gripping her mind. "No!"

Her father pushed her against a box, grabbing her throat. "Do you want me to kill you right here? In front of your friends?"

"No. No," Maeve choked.

"That's what I thought." Krane dragged her off into a neighboring room, slamming the door behind them. He shoved her down onto the ground.

"Dad," Maeve stammered, crawling back. "Dad, please. I'm your daughter."

"You're an experiment," he replied. He raised his hand, generating intense electricity around his entire arm.

"No," Maeve whimpered.

Krane raised his arm.

"I'm your daughter."

He threw his arm down, sending a huge blast of lightning through the room. Maeve screamed.

-

"Maeve?"

She stared up, vision blurred. She could make out three faces looking down on her.

"Maeve?"

Chase?

Maeve blinked hard. As her vision settled, she could see Chase staring back at her.

"Chase," she breathed, her voice weak.

"Maeve!" Chase wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a hug. He, Adam, and Bree were kneeling on the ground around Maeve.

Chase held her so tightly it almost hurt. It certainly didn't help that her entire body was sore, like she had been crushed. But she didn't mind Chase's touch.

Chase looked at her, their faces close. "I thought you were dead."

Maeve pulled away and coughed, sitting up.

"I can't believe you're alive," Bree said, breathing out.

"What happened?" Maeve asked. She looked around. Her body was covered in ash and black marks. Burn marks?

"Your dad. He took you away, and..." Bree trailed off.

"We've got you now," Chase said to Maeve, helping her up.

"How..." Maeve could feel her memory starting to return again. "How did you guys get out?"

"Chase used two abilities at once and almost died," Adam explained. Maeve whipped her head around to him.

"He's exaggerating," Chase quickly said. "Come on, we have to go."

And so the four of them left, heading to home.

-

"We're home!" Bree smiled, opening the door to the Davenport mansion.

"Well, that didn't take long," Leo said, holding a box.

Donald and Tasha stood up from the couch. Almost all of the furniture in the house had been packed into boxes. Leo stood, shocked, holding a smaller box.

Maeve and her friends ran to hug Tasha and Donald.

"I'm so glad you're home safe," Tasha smiled. "I was so worried."

"You guys okay?" Donald asked.

"We're fine, but Douglas' partner is back," Chase said.

"Eh, give it six months," Adam shrugged. "He's super high maintenance."

"He's some crazy billionaire named Victor Krane," Chase explained. "He's implanting himself with bionics."

"That must be how Douglas escaped," Donald shook his head. "I don't know anything about this Krane guy, but I'm gonna figure out who he is and how to stop him."

"Shouldn't be that hard," Adam shrugged. "He's Maeve's dad."

Donald, Tasha, and Leo all stared at her.

"What?" Donald asked.

Maeve nodded slowly. "He's been partnered with Douglas for a while. When I was younger, he gave me bionics. And then a few years ago, Douglas created Marcus, and... that's how I got sent on the mission to find you guys."

Donald took a step towards her. "And after you started living with us, Douglas and your father just happened to hack into my database?"

"...What?" she asked.

Chase frowned at Donald. "What are you implying?"

Donald glared at Maeve. "I never should've let you stay. I knew you couldn't be trusted."

"Mr. Davenport!" Chase exclaimed.

"I- I didn't know he was working with Douglas again," Maeve explained, her heart sinking. "I didn't even know where he was."

"And I'm supposed to believe that? After everything you've done to my family?" Donald said.

"Look, I know-" Maeve started.

"No. I can't even look at you right now. Just- wait here until I figure out what to do with you."

"Donald!" Tasha said. She followed him out of the living room.

Now it was just Adam, Bree, Chase, Maeve, and Leo. The room was so silent. Maeve could feel everyone's eyes on her.

Was Donald right?

Of course, Maeve wasn't in on her father's plan. But would it ever be possible for the Davenports to forgive her?

She could feel tears forming. She couldn't lose her friends. Not now. Not yet.

Maeve turned to Chase. "Chase, I know it looks bad, but you have to believe me. I didn't-"

"I know," Chase assured her, his eyebrows knit together in concern. He hugged her.

"We all believe you, Maeve," Bree said.

Leo nodded. "Big D will come around. He's just stressed because he lost all of his money."

"I hope you're right," Maeve breathed.

Tasha walked back in. "Maeve, honey, I'm so sorry. Donald didn't mean it."

"It's okay," Maeve swallowed.

"Well... you guys must be starving," Tasha said. "I'll get dinner started."

"Look at this!" Leo smiled. "Things are finally getting back to normal."

Her friends nodded as Maeve began to calm down. Okay, so Donald didn't believe her, but she still had her other friends. And they were enough.

The teenagers headed over to the couch, spending the next fifteen minutes hanging out and talking.

"Then the lab blew up and we got trapped in the elevator..." Leo explained. "Big D confided his deepest secrets with me. Hiding Adam, Bree, and Chase in the basement? Not even top ten!"

Maeve giggled and looked over at Chase. He was staring straight ahead, his eyes glowing green.

"Guys, Chase," she said. "What's wrong with him?"

Her friends looked over in concern.

Bree shook her head. "I don't know. Chase, can you hear us?"

Chase slowly stood up and walked over next to Leo.

"What's up with his eyes?" Leo asked.

Suddenly, Chase grabbed Leo by the shirt and forcefully lifted him up into the air.

"Hey! Hey!" Leo warned. "Easy on the chest hairs! I only have two."

Maeve moved to separate them, but in a split second, her vision cut out.

-

Maeve awoke next to Bree and Adam with a pounding headache. Chase was seated next to her, waiting for her to wake up. Bree and Adam began to stir as well.

"What's going on?" Maeve asked. She looked around the living room, which was in utter disarray. Crates were knocked over, their contents strewn around the place. Burn marks and ice shards littered the room.

"Douglas re-installed the Triton App when he had you guys. He took control of your bionics and tried to make you take us out," Donald explained, avoiding eye contact with Maeve.

"Wait, what?" Bree questioned. "How did you stop us?"

Leo grinned. "I was powerful enough to break through to Chase, who used his Commando App to shut down the Triton App."

"I'm so confused," Adam shook his head.

"What matters now is that you guys are home safe," said Donald.

"Yeah, but... what about the lab?" Bree stood up and walked over to the elevator, her family and Maeve trailing behind her.

They walked into what used to be the lab. The entire thing was darkened with ash, walls and columns collapsed on the floor. Leo's cyberdesk had shattered. Exposed wires and broken inventions layered the room.

"Wow," Bree said sadly. Maeve put a hand on her shoulder.

Donald shook his head. "The whole reason I built this place was to protect you, and I couldn't even do that. I feel like I failed you."

"Well, I'm glad someone said it," Adam replied.

Chase turned to Donald. "You didn't fail us. If you hadn't brought us together as a family and let us live like normal kids, we would never have been able to defeat the Triton App."

Donald smiled and put an arm around Chase. "Thanks, guys. You're right. I am handsome and brilliant."

"I didn't-" Chase began.

"No, no," Leo shushed. "Let him go. It's how he copes."
