sink or swim, part one

Maeve, Adam, Bree, and Chase spent the next day finding a place to hide. After turning off their GPS signals, they had made their way to a dock and snuck onto a ship just before it took off.

"Whew!" Bree breathed. "Well, after the last six hours, I can confidently say there is no ladylike way to sit on an anchor."

"What are you complaining about? I had a seagull using my head as a nest," Chase said, pulling feathers from his hair.

"Where is this boat going, anyways?" Maeve asked.

"No idea," said Chase. "I can't pinpoint our coordinates without our GPS locaters."

"I bet we're going to Acapulco," Adam smiled. "That's where all the cruise ships go."

Chase shook his head. "Adam, we're not on a cruise ship. It's a cargo freighter."

"Whatever it is, we're on vacation! I'm making the most out of it."

"This is not a vacation!" Bree exclaimed. "We're hiding from the FBI."

"And if they find out about us, we'll become government guinea pigs and Mr. Davenport will go to jail," Chase frowned.

"Will you relax?" Adam laid down against a life preserver and put on sunglasses. "Nice to get away every once in a while, isn't it? And where is that waiter?"

Maeve rolled her eyes before hearing footsteps. "Guys!" She hissed. The four ducked back behind some boxes as they could hear the crew passing by. After a few moments, Chase went to look around.

"Okay, we're all clear," Chase said, returning from around the corner. "The crew just went to eat."

Adam took off his sunglasses and stood up. "If it's veal shank, I'm giving us up."

"Adam," Bree said, and he sat back down. "So what's our plan?"

Chase sighed. "Well, as soon as we get wherever we're going, I guess we just blend in and live normal lives."

"Wait, so does this mean we're done with missions forever?" Adam asked.

"We have to be. Using bionics will only get us caught," Chase said. "Man, if I'm not mission leader anymore, then I don't know who I am."

Maeve put a hand on his arm. He leaned into her a little.

"Don't worry, Chase," Adam said. "You'll have plenty of girlfriend-less years ahead of you to figure it out."

Maeve and Chase exchanged glances and Bree furrowed her brows in confusion.

Adam's face fell as he remembered Maeve and Chase were together now. "Aw, man. I can't even say that anymore. Now I'm really upset."

Chase rolled his eyes. "We're just gonna have to learn to live like regular people. Kind of sad, isn't it?"

"If by 'sad' you mean 'awesome, I finally get to move far away from you two,' then, yes, tragic," Bree smiled.

"You can move wherever you want," Chase said. "We're still gonna have to spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders."

"Don't be ridiculous, Chase. They can attack us from the front, too," Adam said. "Hey, look, I got a bite!"

He pointed towards the railing of the boat, where he had a fishing pole set up. He grabbed the pole and started reeling it in.

"Aw, she's a fighter!" He exclaimed.

"Adam, what are you doing?!" Maeve asked.

"Deep sea fishing. Come on, fishy baby, come to daddy!" Adam yanked the pole back. A large fish flew up out of the water and straight into Chase, knocking him over.

A door opened.

"They're coming! Hide!" Bree whispered. Maeve helped Chase up and they all ran to hide behind storage boxes.

"Ahh, poor bugger musta jumped right onboard!" The boat captain said, walking up to the fish. "Well, I can't have a fish stinking up my ship! Be free!"

He threw the fish back into the sea. Bree held Adam back.

After the captain left, Chase, Bree, and Maeve headed back to the deck as Adam walked off in search of something.

"How long do you think we're gonna be here?" Maeve asked.

"Hopefully not that much longer," Bree said. "Those storage crates do not look comfortable enough to sleep on."

"Guys, we're in luck!" Adam carried a large box over to them.

"You found food?" Chase asked.

"Better," Adam said, setting the box down. "Crate full of boomerangs."

Bree turned to Maeve. "If he should mysteriously disappear at sea, it was me."

"Time for target practice!" Adam threw a series of boomerangs into the air, using his heat vision to eliminate them. "Good news, Chase. You don't have to worry about that seagull anymore."

"Knock it off!" Bree said. "You are making too much noise and we all agreed we weren't gonna use bionics."

Suddenly, one of the boomerangs flew back. It went straight past them and crashed through a window on the door.

"Woah," Adam breathed. "It's like that boomerang came right back at us!"

The captain opened the door, holding the boomerang. Five sailors followed him out.

The captain looked at Maeve, Adam, Bree, and Chase. "Freeze! Call the coast guard. We got ourselves some illegal stowaways!"

"What are we gonna do?" Bree whispered.

"Guys, I got this," Adam said, turning to the captain. "Sir! We are not stowaways, we're cruisers! I'm Bob Dunwoody from Tampa, Florida, this is my wife, Joan, and our lovely daughters, Piper and Elizabeth!" He gestured to Chase and Maeve.

"Adam," Chase said.

"Not now, Piper. The grown-ups are talking."

"Look," the captain said. "I don't know who you are or how you got on my ship, but the coast guard's coming, and they'll find out. Keep an eye on these criminals."

He left, leaving Maeve and her friends with the group of sailors.

"So..." Adam said, "where you from?"

Bree pulled them aside. "Adam, I cannot believe you got us caught!"

"When the coast guard gets here, they're gonna trace us back to Davenport and we'll be right back where we started with the FBI knocking on our door," said Chase.

"Oh, calm down," Adam said. "We'll just escape."

"We're in the middle of the ocean," Maeve stated flatly. "Where are we gonna go?"

Adam breathed out slowly, thinking. "Well, we can't go home. Tampa's miserable this time of year."

A loud alarm sounded from inside of the ship.

Chase frowned. "Shh. Hold on. Something's wrong."

The captain walked out onto the deck, dismal. "Listen up, men. Coast guard's gonna be a while. There's a submarine that's lost control speeding towards the ocean floor. If it hits, it'll wipe out the entire crew. Poor guys. Well, I gotta go up here and moisturize."

The captain returned upstairs.

"Okay, that bought us some time," Chase said. "I'll scan the ship to see if there's a life raft we can escape on."

Bree scoffed. "Forget us. We have to rescue that sub."

Maeve nodded.

"We can't," Chase said. "I'd have to enable my GPS, and if I did, it would give our location to the FBI."

"So, what, are we just gonna let that crew die?" Maeve shook her head.

"We don't have another choice. We'll just let the coast guard handle it. We can't save the world anymore," Chase said, walking off.

"Chase," Maeve sighed, following him.

They sat on a nearby storage crate, just out of earshot of the others.

"Chase," Maeve started.

"I'm sorry, Maeve. We can't do anything for them."

"I know," Maeve said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "But I think you also know that we were given these abilities for a reason."

Chase thought.

"I just feel like there's no good option here. We can either sit here and wait for the coast guard to come after us, or we can help that submarine crew," she continued.

"We can't reveal our locations. Our bionic abilities could fall into the hands of the wrong people," Chase explained.

Maeve paused. "You're right. But... I can't sit here while people are dying."

Bree and Adam came over and sat down with them.

"I can't believe this is happening," Bree frowned.

Adam nodded. "Some vacation."

The captain walked up to them. "Good news! The coast guard's bringing another ship to arrest you. Well, good for us. Bad for you. I guess I should've just said 'bad news'!" He laughed.

"Well, what about the submarine?" Maeve asked.

"Doesn't look good," the captain shook his head. "It's tough being this close and realizing there's nothing anyone can do to help."

Chase's expression shifted as the captain walked off.

Bree stood up. "Chase, we have to do something."

"Yeah, we're the only ones who can save 'em," Adam agreed.

"You do realize that we would be giving ourselves up?" Chase asked. "Our lives will be over."

"But wasn't that Mr. Davenport's idea when he created bionic superhumans?" Maeve said. "For us to use our abilities to help others? I mean, who are we if we just let them die?"

Bree nodded. "People are in trouble, I would rather rot in jail knowing that we did the right thing."

"Me too," said Adam, standing up.

"Who am I kidding?" Chase stood up with Maeve. "Of course we have to help. Bree, how fast can you subdue the crew?"

"Look who you're talking to. 'Fast' is my middle name," she answered.

"You're lucky," Adam said. "Mine's Charles."

"How are we gonna stop the submarine from crashing?" Bree asked.

"Maeve, your environmental adaptation ability. You can breathe underwater, right?" Chase turned to her.

"Yeah, but I'm not strong enough to hold back the submarine," she said.

"But I am," said Adam.

Maeve nodded slowly. "I can create a bubble of oxygen for you, but it's not gonna last forever. You'll have to be in and out."

"Adam, once I give you the coordinates, use your strength to propel yourself deep enough to reach the sub," instructed Chase. "Then you can divert it back to the surface."

"Got it," said Adam. "And you can boss people around like you usually do."

"I do not boss people around," Chase explained. "I lead. I am a leader."

"Oh, yes, you are, aren't you?" Adam mocked, poking Chase on the nose. Chase swatted his hand away.

"Come on!" Bree exclaimed.

She super-sped over to a rope on the ground and tied up the crew, including the captain, before dragging them off.

"Okay, the crew's tied up below deck. Hurry," Bree said upon returning.

"This is it," Chase breathed. "I'm activating my GPS." He stepped forward and raised a hand to the side of his head, connecting to a satellite. "Got it. Okay, Adam, they're not far, but we're running out of time. I'll send you the coordinates wirelessly."

Adam shuddered, smiling. "Ooh, got 'em."

"Let's do this," Chase said.

Adam and Maeve walked up to the railing. Maeve held out her hands, generating a bubble and placing it around Adam's head.

"This should last you long enough. Just be quick," she said.

Adam nodded and stepped over the rail. "Cannonball!" He yelled, his voice muffled from the bubble. He jumped overboard.

"And right now, I'm not really liking our chances," Chase said.

They waited as Adam swam down.

"We can track the sub on my sonar scan," Chase said, lifting his fingers to his temple again.

"Come on, Adam," Maeve shook her head.

"Five hundred feet to impact," Chase stated. "The sub's about to hit!"

"Don't worry," Bree said nervously. "He can do this."

"Three hundred feet," Chase continued. "Two hundred feet. One hundred feet. It's fifty feet away!"

A loud sound came from the ocean.

"He did it! Look!" Chase smiled. The submarine popped up onto the surface of the ocean.

"They're safe!" Chase said.

"Yes!" Maeve grinned, hugging Chase, then Bree.

This was new for Maeve. She had never really used her bionics to help others in this way.

"You know, no matter what happens to us, it was worth it," said Bree.

Chase and Maeve nodded.

Bree looked out over the railing. "Hey, where's Adam?"

They looked over. Adam was nowhere in sight.

"Adam?" Chase called. "Adam!"

A sinking feeling started in Maeve's stomach as she shook her head. "He's been down there too long. There's no way he still has oxygen."

"This can't be happening," Bree said, her voice breaking.

"I should've never sent him down there," Chase said. "It's all my fault."

Maeve shook her head. "No, Chase. It was me. I should've known the oxygen bubble wouldn't have lasted."

"Guys," Bree exclaimed as tears began to fill her eyes. "It's no one's fault."

The three stared solemnly out at the ocean. Maeve felt horrible. It should have been her who had gone down there. She could have at least tried to stop the submarine - surely she could've figured something out. And then Adam would have been okay.

"What are we staring at?" Someone whispered from behind them. It was Adam, drenched.

"Adam!" Bree shouted, hitting him. "We thought you were dead!"

"How did you survive so long without oxygen?!" Chase asked.

"By breathing underwater," Adam shrugged.

Chase looked at him, confused, as Maeve threw her arms up in exasperation.

"Well, I guess we're back to using our bionics for missions," said Bree.

"Oh, great," Adam rolled his eyes. "So now it's a working vacation. You just can't unplug anymore. I blame the internet."

"Now it's time for our next mission," said Chase, "finding a life raft and getting off this ship."

Suddenly, the door burst open. The captain came out, followed by his crew.

"Don't move!" The captain shouted.

"I thought you tied them up!" Chase said to Bree.

"I said I could tie fast, not well!" Bree explained.

The sound of a helicopter came from above. They all looked up to see a helicopter hovering above the boat.

"It's Mr. Davenport!" Bree exclaimed.

Donald released a ladder from the helicopter. "Quick, climb on!"

"Later!" Bree shouted, climbing up the ladder.

Chase guided Maeve to the ladder. "You go, I'll be right up."

"Get em!" The captain yelled as Maeve climbed up to the helicopter.

The crew raised metal bars and tools at Adam and Chase. Adam began fighting back, pushing the crew away, before running up to the ladder.

"Adam, wait!" Chase exclaimed.

"Chase!" Maeve shouted.

"You're not going anywhere!" The captain said to Chase.

Chase turned and ran off, jumping onto the ladder as Donald began to raise it up. The captain ran after him, grabbing onto Chase's leg.

"Adam, help!" Chase cried.

"Well, I know you're pathetically weak, but can't you at least try kicking free?!" Adam replied.

Chase kicked the captain off of him and started to climb up. As he did, the captain grabbed onto the last rung of the ladder. When they got close enough to the helicopter, Adam helped Chase up off the ladder. When Chase was safely in, Adam detached the ladder and watched as the captain fell into the water.

"Whoops," Adam said. "Hey, at least a shark broke his fall."

"It is so good to see you guys," Donald smiled.

"Hey, Mr. Davenport, where's Leo?" Chase asked.

"Oh, uh, he's waiting for us at one of my offshore facilities," Donald explained. "We're gonna have to hide out there since the FBI is on our tails. Relax, you're safe now."

Chase leaned back into his seat. Maeve smiled at him and laid her head on his shoulder.
