Cassandra's POV
It's been a week since I almost moved out.
Xavier has changed and has been caring and supportive towards me. He now works from home so he's at home all the time. He always comes to check up on me every thirty minutes and attends all my antenatal classes with me even though he isn't needed.
Although he has been very kind to me I can't forget everything he has done to me.
He has agreed to help me find my own place, at least until we figure things about (that's if it's possible).
We still sleep in different rooms. We have decided to reset the clock at start out as friends or at least as people who know each other.
I've given him another chance for the sake of my children, at least if some things are to go wrong I'd know that I gave their father a chance and didn't rob them of the chance of knowing their father. I grow-up with both my parents and I wouldn't want to rob them from their father's love.
We agreed that one wrong move from him, the one thing I'll be getting from him is child support.
Things have been awkward between Benjamin and I ever since. We no longer talk like we used to. We hardly see each other especially now that Xavier prefers to drive me around himself. When we do see each other things are awkward.
I wish things would go back to the way it was with Benjamin, I feel so alone and Lynne has been in New York for two months, she doesn't even answer my calls anymore.
Right now I was having breakfast with Elizabeth in a restaurant. It was amazing having her around and right now I just needed a friend.
I was lost in my thoughts while she continued to speak.
"He's leaving her, turns out it wasn't even his baby." Elizabeth said then took a sip of her orange juice.
Elizabeth was talking about Roxanne. Her husband Walt was leaving her. Turns out she was having an affair.
"That must suck for him," I said.
"It's gets better, their Gardner is the father." She said letting out a laugh.
I placed my hand in front of my mouth trying not to laugh.
Roxanne was a snob. She always made herself seem better than everyone else. I never thought she would stood that low.
"I have to go," Elizabeth said looking at her watch.
"All ready?" I said.
"Yes, I promised Ellie she would help decorate her baby brother's room today." She said.
She placed a hundred dollar note on the table before getting up. She hugged me before leaving.
I needed a drink before I go home.
"What would you like to order ma'am?" The waiter asked.
I could see his legs shake as well as his hand.
"Can I please have some orange juice and coconut biscuits." I ordered.
He nodded at me, his hand still shaking as he walked away.
He looked very suspicious.
Maybe today was his first day and he was just nervous.
Minutes later he came back with my orange juice and biscuits.
I looked at his name badge to see the name Quinn written on it.
He placed the juice and biscuits in front of me on the table.
"Anything else ma'am?" He asked.
"No," I said dismissing him.
I stared down at my juice as I noticed the brown particles floating in it.
"Wait," I said stopping him.
He turned around frantically his eyes widened.
"Yes ma'am," he said.
"What is this brown stuff in my drink?" I asked.
He started to tremble as he stared at me.
"Special recipe ma'am," he said. "It's our special ingredient from the chef, it's good for pregnant women." He said.
"Okay thanks," I replied. "You don't have to get so nervous around me," I added
He nodded, then walked away quickly, happy to be away from me.
"He's weird." I whispered.
I took the glass of juice from the table then pulled it to my lips but before I could take a sip someone fell on me from behind causing the juice to spill all over my clothes.
"I'm so sorry ma'am," a lady said placing her hand on my shoulder.
I took the napkin wiping myself.
All wait, I know that voice!
"Are you okay babe?" Another voice said, it was a guy.
"I'm sorry ma'am, I'll.."
I turned around from my seat facing the lady
I stared at her in shock as her eyes met mine.
I couldn't believe it.
I blinked a couple of times thinking my eyes were playing a trick on me.
What was she doing here?
"Lynnette?" I whispered.
"Cassie," she said her eyes whelming up.
I thought she said she was in New York. If she was back for how long? Why didn't she tell me she was back?
"I thought you were in New York," I said.
I was still staring at her shocked. She didn't reply, instead she looked down playing with her fingers nervously.
I looked to her side to see the face I dread the most.
Ethan!
"Ethan?" I said staring at him shocked.
Yap, the asshole who tied to sell me into human trafficking.
"What are you doing here?" I said, my voice raising in anger.
"Cassie, your sister and I are..." He began before Lynne interrupted.
"Cassandra we need to talk," she said.
"Please," I muttered.
I don't know if this is a joke or what but I needed an explanation.
Was Lynne lying to me all this time? Was she ever in New York?
She took a seat nervously along with Ethan.
I glared at Ethan, trying to calm down.
"Please explain," I said
"Well... Ethan and I are together." She said nervously.
I was hoping there was a chance it was a coincidence that they were both here but this confirmed my fear. Each word cut through me like a knife.
Not because Ethan was my ex-boyfriend or anything of that sort. But because it hurt me to know my sister was with someone like him. She deserved so much better.
"For how long," I muttered, my eyes whelming up in tears.
"A year," she whispered, looking down at her hand.
A year? I would have expected a month or a week.
Lynne had been lying to me all along, even the time we lived together. Now I know what those late hours and overtime meant.
"Lynne! A year? You deserve so much better. Ethan is an asshole. He's probably waiting for the chance to sell you as well into human trafficking!" I yelled.
Everyone in the restaurant now had their attention on me, looking at us with eye brows raised.
"Please try to understand. I love him. Trust me he has changed." She said.
"I can't deal with this," I said getting up from my chair.
"Please don't leave," she said.
She grabbed my hand stopping me.
"Lynne, you all I have left. I can't watch you do this." I said.
Tears started rolling down her cheeks. That's when I noticed.
Her little baby bump.
"How far off are you?" I asked.
"What?" She said confused.
"How many months is your pregnancy?" I asked.
"Two months," she answered looking down at her shoes
"It was him you were with when you called that evening, wasn't it?" I asked.
She didn't reply. She didn't have to, I already knew the answer.
I took the hundred dollar note from the table. I pulled my arm away from her walking away.
I thought we were close, I never thought she would lie to me. I thought men were the only lying bastards but I guess I was wrong.
I walked to the counter paying for our breakfast earlier and ordering something for myself.
"Can I have some orange juice," I ordered wiping my tears.
The cashier gave me a small smile before proceeding with my order.
I texted Xavier to pick me up, he immediately replied 'I'm on my way'.
"Here is your order ma'am," the cashier said handing me my drink. He turned to attend to another customer.
Just as I was about to leave, I felt a grip on my arm.
It was the waiter from earlier. Quinn.
"Wait ma'am." He said. "There was a mix-up in the kitchen. That's not your drink." He continued.
He still had the same look of anxiety in his eyes.
"Okay," I said giving him half a smile.
He took my drink then walked back into the kitchen.
Minutes later he came back with another drink.
"Here you go," he said handing me my drink.
"Thanks," I muttered.
I turned around to see Lynne crying in Ethan's arms.
She made her decision.
I walked to the exit holding my drink. Just as I stepped outside someone called after me.
"Wait! Ma'am," I heard a load voice.
I felt a tap on my shoulder.
I turned around to see the cashier who served me.
"Yes," I said
"Please don't drink that," he said breathing heavily.
"What?" I said confused.
"Please don't drink that juice," he said. "I saw him put something in your drink." He said.
I looked at him confused for a moment, he must have been talking about Quinn.
"It's nothing, he said it was the chef's special." I answered.
"There is no chef's special ma'am. Until today I've never seen him here before and I've worked here for fifteen years." He said.
That must explain why he was so nervous around me. But why would he want to poison my drink?
"Thank you for informing me," I said.
I took my purse then took two hundred dollars out.
"Here you go," I said handing him the money.
"No ma'am, I can't take this," he said.
"Please do, not many people would have done what you did. You saved me." I insisted.
He took the money from my hand.
"Thank you ma'am," he said.
"My pleasure," I answered.
He walked back into the restaurant.
As I stood by the bin throwing my juice away, I saw the guy 'Quinn' again. He looked around before walking into a corner.
I wanted to confront him, so I followed. I made sure to keep my distance.
He suddenly stopped. He was talking to a woman wearing a black coat, black sunglasses and a scarf around her head.
I hid away behind the wall making sure they couldn't see me.
"Did you do it?" The woman asked.
"Yes, she fell for it." He answered.
The woman took an envelope from her purse before handing in to him.
"Here is your full amount." She said.
She removed her glasses reveling her face.
The face I saw shocked me.
It was Xavier's mother.
Melissa.
Not wanting them to see me I walked away rushing to the parking lot where Xavier was waiting for me.
