Chapter 2: Going to the Beach

Noah woke up the next morning to birds chirping outside and a gentle breeze coming in through his window. He always loved keeping his window open during the night. He loved going to sleep with the glowing moon on his face, the gentle breeze, and owls hooting.

He usually awoke to his dog Randy licking his face too. Which he was doing this morning as well. Noah pushed him off and sat in bed for a minute looking at the ceiling. Randy jumped off the bed and looked up at Noah wagging his tail. Randy was a Golden Retriever that was partly deaf in one ear and partly blind in one eye, but he was an awesome dog. His family had adopted him when he was two because nobody wanted a dog like him. Noah loved him either way.

Noah glanced at his alarm clock and saw that it was 6:25. Some Saturday mornings he left the house before his mom or dad were awake and went to Doyle's house. But he would always leave them a note telling them where he was going and what time range he would return. This morning he definitely felt like going to the beach with Doyle.

The beach was his favorite place on earth. Noah could be at the beach all day, every day and not get sick of the warm air, crashing blue waves, unique sea shells of every shape and design, and soft white sand. But the main reason why Noah loved the beach so much was because he got to surf.

He had won many surfing trophies from the past and still to this day. Every summer every Saturday, there is a competition for the best surfer, there are always ribbons for the whole summer, but then at the last competition, they would give out 3 trophies. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Noah always got the 1st place trophies and many 1st and 2nd place ribbons.

Noah got up out of bed and pat Randy on his golden furry head. He slipped into his orange swim shirt and pulled on his blue swim shorts with orange spots. Then he went downstairs really quietly after saying goodbye to Randy and shutting his door.

First he went into the kitchen and grabbed his tan beach bag and stuffed a green towel, 2 water bottles, 5 granola bars, 2 packages of gold fish, 2 cutie oranges, and a leftover sandwich he didn't finish the night before. There was only half of it left, but he took it anyway because his parents got mad when he left half eaten things on the counter or threw it away. They thought it was wasteful.

He went into the basement and grabbed his surfboard. It was blue with an orange strip going down the middle. He had saved up all his allowance money for this surfboard last year. It was the shiniest surfboard in the town market and he knew he must have it. Besides it also had his two most favorite colors on it, orange and blue.

Right before he left, he grabbed an apple and a bagel. He slapped jelly and cream on it while writing a note to his parents where he was going and when he should be back. He placed the note on the kitchen table and slipped out the front door.

He walked down the sidewalk in his swim gear, bag, and shiny surfboard in hand. He ate the bagel and then gave loud crunches of the apple. After he was done with the apple, he set down the remains of it on the sidewalk and backed away. He soon saw a small squirrel take it and run away to its home. Noah loved animals too.

It was still dark out and all the neighbors were still asleep with their lights off. It was only 6:35 in the morning. About 10 minutes went by and he was in front of Doyle's house. The house was dark and looked abandoned, like every other house on the street. People in this town liked to sleep in, but not Noah. He was always up before the sun.

Noah opened the black gate in front and walked up to the front door. He stopped to think for a minute and then went around the house to the back. He didn't want to just barge in because he remembered that Doyle's family recently got a security alarm attached to the front door because of a robber that tried to get in.

He looked up and saw Doyle's bedroom window. It was open, even the screen. Doyle didn't have any pets, so it wasn't a problem. He looked around for something to throw at the window, but couldn't find anything. He looked in his beach bag and found a ball of wrapped up gum wrappers that he hadn't thrown away. It was a ball the size of a tennis ball. Noah loved gum.

He looked at Doyle's window again and threw the ball of waded up gum wrappers. It went through the window.

"Oops," Noah murmured quietly to himself.

He waited for a minute and then put his bag and surf board down on the grass. There was a tree right next to Doyle's side of the house. Another thing about Noah was that he was never scared to try something new or daring, so he started climbing the tree up to Doyle's window. He had done it many times and never fallen or slipped.

The branches on the tree were very sturdy and were placed in the perfect places for him step and climb up the tree. He knew the tree so well, he knew exactly when to push out branches or leaves.

Once he was up the tree as close to Doyle's room as he could, he eyeballed the window and leapt through with perfect aim. He landed on Doyle's floor silently and on his hands and knees. If Noah were a robber, this would be a perfect place to get in. He should probably tell Doyle's to put a screen on the window at least. Doyle's was use to Noah jumping in through the window, so it didn't really faze him much today.

Noah looked over to Doyle's bed and he was sitting up reading. Noah loved to read and would do so as often as he could. He would usually spend most of his spare time at the public library. The librarian liked him so much, she let him have a special room all to himself.

"Hey dude, I wanted to go to the beach and surf with you.

"Okay, let me just finish this chapter. There is a man fighting a dragon right now,"

Noah nodded. He looked around Doyle's room and spotted the gum wrapper he had thrown. He picked it up and through it up the window again. It landed near his surfboard and bag.

Doyle looked up from his book and said,

"I will meet you at my front porch after I get ready," he then put a bookmark in his book and placed it on his desk nearby. The book was about 2 inches thick!

"Okay, meet you there!" Noah said climbing out the window again.

"My bedroom has a door you know," said Doyle getting out of bed.

"I know, but I like jumping in and out of windows," said Noah peaking his head through the window again and gave a smile.

"And trees," said Noah a second later peaking his head in the window again. Doyle smiled and got out his swim stuff.
