Chapter 14: "I have to do it" 6-9-16

Everybody eventually made it back to the car. It was now 3 o'clock and they were driving home. On the way home all Nicki was talking about was the new gorilla exhibit and her new stuffed animal. She also introduced her new stuffed animal, which was a gorilla, to her other stuffed animals from the zoo. They had got stuck in some nasty slow traffic that took a while to get through, but they managed to get home by 4 o'clock at Doyle's house. They were home just in time for the waters to get wavy, bumpy, and rise.

Once they got home, Noah, Doyle, and Robin thanked Doyle's dad for driving them and then they all went upstairs to Doyle's room to talk over the plan one last time before their departure to the beach.

"So, we will go to the beach and be careful because of the waves and then if the shark doesn't leave for freedom, then somebody will throw the opened vile of blood into the water. And hopefully this works or else we are stuck at square one, like Doyle said earlier," Robin explained.

"Okay, I think we are ready. We can do it!" said Noah more confidently than he actually was inside.

Then suddenly Doyle's door opened a crack and in came Nicki.

"Do what?" she asked sneakily and gave a strange smile. She was still holding her stuffed animal gorilla too.

Noah, Doyle, and Robin looked up surprised to see her standing there and Noah said,

"Oh nothing. We are just talking over a secret mission," Doyle nudged him in the arm softly. He knew Noah hated lying and especially to young kids.

"Go back to playing Nicki. Go show your new gorilla toy your bedroom," said Doyle desperately and then adding in a please.

She just stood there rocking back and forth and said,

"I like hearing secrets..." then she ran out of the room yelling,

"They have a SECRET! They have a SECRET!"

Nicki ran down the stairs and kept yelling it over and over again. Doyle got up and closed his door again with a big sigh.

"Do you think we are ready? We should probably go now so we have time to walk over to the beach and find the shark," said Doyle.

Everybody agreed and Doyle reopened his door and they all paraded down stairs. They saw Nicki running around outside still yelling her head off. Then they saw Doyle's dad in the kitchen making dinner. He remembered his mom wasn't home and that she probably left to be with her friends already.

"Hey dad, is it okay if we go down to the beach for a bit? How long is dinner going to take?" Doyle asked turning to his dad.

Doyle's dad was chopping up some carrots and celery and without looking up he said,

"Dinner will be ready in about a half an hour and I'm making soup. And yes, you can go, but please be back home by 6. That should give you plenty of time,"

"Thanks dad, a ton!" Doyle almost shouted. They had about two hours to do this.

He then remembered the last thing he and his friends had eaten today was the breakfast at the bakery. He grabbed a box of crackers and 3 apples and placed them in Noah's beach bag.

On their way to the beach, Noah texted his parents and told them he should be home by 6:20 ish tonight. They said okay and he and his friends proceeded to the beach.

It had stopped raining a before they had all gotten to the zoo, but the air was beginning to feel cold again and the air smelt of fresh rain. The sky was covered with darker clouds and the once sunny sky was now covered. It was even a little windy.

Once they all got to the beach they all saw how a hurricane from a couple of states over can affect the oceans waters. The water was about the level as it should be around nighttime, but it wasn't night yet. The waters had lots more waves and they were bigger than usual too. Noah spotted the rock formations and the small island was the shark was trapped and pointed in that direction.

Noah reached for the apples in his bag and handed them out to his friends. Then he took one for himself and started crunching into it. Apples were his favorite fruit.

This beach had lots of tall boulders placed everywhere. Most of them were covered by water already and just the tops of them shown. Waves kept crashing over them making them look slippery. They might make a good path to hop across to be able to get closer to the shark and the rest of the free ocean.

"Okay, this is as close to the shark as we can get," Doyle said as they stepped at the end of the shore and felt the water gush over their shoes.

"I hadn't expected the waters to be this raised. Know what?" asked Doyle.

"I have a plan," said Noah, "Hand me the vile of blood please Robin,"

"First off. What's your plan?" Robin asked.

"Okay, this sounds crazy, but... I was thinking I could hop across the top of those rocks and then once I am close enough to the shark, I can throw the vile. How does that sound?"

"Crazy and I will not allow you to," said Doyle quickly after Noah spoke.

"I have to. That's the only option. And if anyone is to do it, it should be me. I have the most experience with climbing and swimming if need by I fall in," Noah said looking Doyle in the eye.

"If you fall in, you are a goner!" interrupted Robin loudly.

"Well, I have to do it. I would never forgive myself if one of you two had to do the work for me and failed. After all, I was the one to bring everybody into this shark stuff," said Noah handing his beach bag to Doyle.

"I won't take it," Doyle said stubbornly crossing his arms.

Robin took it and swung it over her good arm and said,

"I would go, but my arm is bad. I would probably fall or slip,"

"Be safe and come back," Doyle said almost in a whisper."

"I will," said Noah even quieter.

"Wait, I am tying a rope around you and you can't do anything about it," Robin said.

She pulled the emergency rope out of her bag that Noah remembered seeing so long ago when there was no mysterious shark that had to save or any mystery. It felt like so long ago. Robin tied the rope around Noah's waist tightly and let Doyle hold onto it. He was stronger than she was.

"If we lose sight of you or something happens, he is going to pull you back. No if, thanes, or buts about it. Now go save that shark! We know you can do it," Robin said giving Noah a gentle shove.

Noah put the core from his apple into his bag that Robin was holding and then turned to walk away towards the first boulder. He stood still for a moment looking out to the ocean and then turned around and gave Robin and Doyle a giant hug and looked them both in the eyes for a moment. Then he walked slowly towards the first boulder he saw.
