Chapter 1

Warning: Violence, like a lot of it. And a bit of cursing if that's not your cup of tea.

(This takes place in the 1920's)

It was perhaps the strangest trio in Lamport City, a giant, a human, and a borrower. Not only the strangest but the most wanted by both their respected criminal factions and by the fuzz, which is why their current goal was to get out of the city as quickly as possible. The problem was, being hunted down by three separate criminal organizations and the police made this task near impossible. The key word being near impossible.

Annoyingly, Norman, a giant standing at a respectable 20ft height, found himself walking at a human's pace, which was nothing short of dreadful. The human he was following, Edwin, apparently had a plan. Though based on his few past experiences within the past week, Edwin tended to say plan with a very loose definition.

Edith, the borrower who begrudgingly found herself in the chest pocket of Edwin also agreed with Norman, the two surprisingly getting along rather well despite the immense difference in stature. Though admittedly this was only to complain about Edwin's... Eccentricity.

"Edwin, what in god's name do you have planned this time, oh and winging it." She said with air quotes. "Does not count as a plan." Edith was met with a rumbling chuckle before Edwin lightly patted the pocket. "You'll see."

She gritted her teeth. "Yes we'll, that's the problem, your plans tend to go south almost immediately. I'd like to know what I'm getting into."

"I have to agree as well, with all of our bosses trying to wring our necks, I'd like to know what our next move is." Norman said, keeping his voice as low as possible for the borrower, he couldn't care less if he made Edwin uncomfortable.

Edwin mockingly sighed before speaking. "Oh ye of little faith." His statement drew annoyed scoffs from the two others.

Eventually the trio made it to where they were supposed to be going, though as usual the giant and the borrower were still confused as to what the human had in mind. The aptly named Bridge Emporium was an integrated bar, the first of its kind. Initially it was supposed to be a safe space for giants, humans, and borrowers to interact, though it quickly became the perfect place for deals and negotiations between the three crime organizations that fought for control over the city.

"Edwin... This is not the time to get wasted." Norman hissed as the two entered the establishment. He'd been here a few times, either for a decent drink or to accompany clients on deals, and the place was innovative, he had to give them that. The tables were sized for all three species and the ceiling was where the borrowers who worked for the bar were. They acted as the bar's waiters, dropping in on tables using their grapples, taking orders and relaying them to the bartender and chefs.

"Don't tempt me." Edwin said as the three were seated at a table. Norman couldn't help but notice that the place was more full than usual, which was odd considering that it was only a weekday during the afternoon.

Once they were seated, Edith and Norman sat waiting for this miraculous plan that would help them escape, but Edwin just twiddled his thumbs not doing anything. Edith's patience was the first to run out. "Edwin, would you mind explaining exactly why we're here." She said curtly.

"Well I'm so glad you asked, mon ami." He said, putting his feet onto the table which garnered a pained expression from the two. "As of the moment, exiting Lamport is impossible. We can't go anywhere without either of us being noticed, and believe me we are very noticeable." Edwin removed his feet from the table and leaned in on two crossed arms.

He had a smirk and glint in his eyes that never failed to make the borrower and the giant uncomfortable. "The only way out is we have a distraction that takes up the interest of all the three crime heads in this city." Both Norman and Edith shifted uncomfortably. "I don't like where this is going." Norman mumbled. "Me neither." At the two's reluctancy, Edwin's grin could only widen.

"So! How to make the perfect distraction, well I contacted some of your borrower friends Edith and told them that we'd be at Bridge Emporium at this exact time!" The giant' and borrower's eyes widened however Edwin wasn't done just yet.

"And I might have told some of my old associates that I was here, and some giants, and maybe the fuzz as well." Norman looked around and sure enough he spotted some of the associates he used to work for, along with others he couldn't recognize. Edith took a closer look at the railings, and sure enough, borrowers donned in black clothing rather than waiter outfits were manning the rappels.

Norman put a hand on Edwin's shoulder and gripped firmly, telling him without words that he could end him at this very second. "And humor me this Edwin... Why the fuck would you do that?" He hissed. Edith flinched at the rage in Norman's voice, hearing it from a human was already intimidating enough, but from a giant? That was more than terrifying.

Seemingly unphased, the human only grinned looking up at Norman. "Oh c'mon man, weren't you listening? We need a distraction, and what seems to be the common theme when two vastly different kinds of people meet?" Almost on cue a commotion seemed to be brewing a few tables away.

"Hey! Watch it, you oversized prick!"

"The hell did you just call me, bug?!"

Edwin held his hands out with the widest smirk on his face. "They never get along!" All around them, conflict seemed to brew even faster, as arguments grew ever more heated, and shoves were being thrown around. Just then, all the doors to the establishment were kicked open with police officers barging in.

The room was deadly quiet, all parties staring down at each other waiting for the first move to be made. Edwin gave Edith and Norman a serious look, no matter how much shit he gave them, Edwin had complete trust in his two strange partners. He quickly scooped the borrower into his hands and gave Norman a nod. Who then proceeds to kickover the table and have the trio duck behind it.

The sheer sound of the action served as the spark to create pure chaos. The humans pulled out guns as giants grabbed whatever object was near them and used them as weapons. Giants were riddled with bullets, the sound of bones fracturing from humans as powerful punches from giants were thrown at them. All the while, the odd trio sat desperately behind the cover of the table.

Norman was the first to act, quickly grabbing a passing human and slamming him into the ground. Knocked out or dead, it didn't matter he tossed the body over to Edwin which still was gripping a gun.

The human pried the lever action shotgun from the body and some shells as well. "Clear us a path, we'll be right behind you." Edwin deposited Edith onto his shoulder and loaded a few more shells into the gun before cocking it. Norman, upon seeing that they were ready, charged headfirst into the crowd.

Edwin followed suit, shooting anyone who got in his way, giant or human. However as Norman was busy trying to beat down one of the giants blocking their path, another one came up behind them. He aimed directly at the giant's face, only for his heart to drop when the click from the trigger was not followed by a loud bang.

"Hang on!" He called out to Edith as he rolled to the side to dodge a fist that just narrowly missed his face. Edwin quickly loaded another shell, cocked the lever, and delivered a package of piping hot buckshot into the giant's face, causing it to retreat. "Edith?!" Edwin cried out in a panic, not being able to feel the feather light weight on his shoulder.

"I'm okay!" Edith was just barely hanging onto the collar of his dress shirt, her grapple hooked onto it. She pulled herself back, crouching to get more balance as the human frantically moved to cover. Looking around she spotted a stray grapple hook line, the borrower manning it must have fallen off or worse.

She tapped his neck before yelling above the commotion. "Get me to that rope, it's to your right about a couple feet!" Edwin stopped to look for the small piece of rope, and once spotted he got up and ran over to it. He positioned himself so that his shoulder was right next to the rope, allowing her to grab it and for Edwin to provide cover fire.

Giving the rope a tug, she was reeled back up to the railings on the ceiling where borrowers continually rappelled down doing what damage they could to both humans and giants. Edith looked down and spotted both Edwin and Norman, still fighting their way through the crown to the nearest exit.

The railings were organized into grids, and there was a straight path that would follow her two bigger partners perfectly. The only problem was the borrowers already manning the repelling stations getting in her way, though for her they were just small obstacles. Pulling out several throwing knives, Edith charged down the line.

"Hey! What are you-" Before the borrower closest could finish their sentence, a knife plunged deep into their skull. She ran past him before his body could even hit the floor. Another one that was closeby pulled out a needle pin and swung it towards her. Edith ducked and slid under the blade. Now behind the borrower, she delivered a stab into his back and knocked him over the railing and into the chaotic fight below. Over the commotion and focus on the fight, the rest never stood a chance against her.

Looking over the rail, Edith saw that Edwin and Norman were pinned down behind cover by a human firing with a tommy gun. She spotted something circular on the side of his waist, and a dark grin took over her face. Edith ran as fast as she could to the rappel line that was right on top of the human.

She pulled out two earplugs, and once inserted Edith slid down the line, going completely unnoticed to the human's side. Edith swung the rope a bit, gaining momentum until she was able to grab the human's shirt and access the grenade attached to his waist. Pulling the pin out with some effort, she hurriedly tugged the rope which sent her back up as the heat of the explosion followed close by.

The explosion from the grenade cleared the crowd enough for Edwin and Norman to make a break for the door. Edwin was surprisingly able to pick up her faint voice calling out to him as she swung from the ceiling. He turned just in time as she jumped from the rope, rolling as she landed into his palm.

Edwin cupped the palm against his chest and with Norman, made the final sprint for the exit and for their freedom.
