How to Save a Life (GermanyxFem!Italy The Fray)
Step one: you say we need to talk.
Feliciana Vargus, otherwise known as Italy, needed to talk to her boyfriend, Ludwig Beilschmidt, otherwise known as Germany. Feliciana wrung her hands together as she approached the blonde-haired blue-eyed man. "We need to talk." She said in a thick Italian accent.
He walks. You say "Sit down It's just a talk."
Ludwig raised his eyebrows but obliged. He walked with Feliciana until they were alone in the kitchen, away from the party going on for Ludwig's older brother. "Sit down." She said and patted the seat next to hers and smiled.
He smiles politely back at you. You stare politely right on through.
Ludwig smiled at his beloved Feliciana and noticed that she seemed to be looking through him, rather than at him. "Is everything alright?" He asks in a thick German accent.
Some sort of window to your right. As he goes left and you stay right between the lines of fear and blame.
Feliciana nodded and decided to get it over with. She looked out the window on the right side of the kitchen, "I know you've been cheating on me." She blurted out. "And this relationship just isn't working." She said quickly. Ludwig looks at her angrily before saying, "Well, it's your fault! You never want to go on dates with me! I was getting lonely and he offered me comfort and... and..." He looks down at his hands. Ludwig is beginning to fear he will lose the love of his life.
You begin to wonder why you came.
Feliciana looks at him in disbelief, her eyes widening. She is silent and looks at him while he begins to place the blame on your brother for offering his love in the first place and blaming you for never being there for him. Feliciana begins to wonder why she even bothered coming to his house for his brother's birthday party.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend.
Feliciana remembers the simple and easy times you used to have when it was just her, him, and Kiku Honda, otherwise known as Japan, were just the best friends ever. Then Feliciana and Ludwig started dating and Kiku began feeling like a third wheel and their friendship dissapated and now this... She already lost one friend.
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
Feliciana knew that Ludwig and her had begun to fight a lot since they started dating and Kiku would have to intervene and would usually suffer physical consequences of Ludwig's rage. They once had a sweet and sturdy friendship, but that swiftly turned into a bitter lonliness.
And I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known.
It was a good time when they would hang out as friends, but after Ludwig and Feliciana began dating and Kiku would get beaten every time Ludwig and Feliciana fought, Kiku had to commit suicide because he didn't want to feel pain and see his dear friends fight, even if it meant leaving his boyfriend Heracles Karpusi, a.k.a. Greece, behind.
How to save a life.
Feliciana blamed it on herself that Kiku killed himself, but she knew that it was also Ludwig's fault. Feliciana felt that if she had never asked the German to date her, Kiku would still be alive. Feliciana didn't know how to save a life while feeling complete. Now she felt hollow and empty and hurt.
Let him know that you know best.
Feliciana waited for him to finish before she said, "I know best. I've had a relationship that just didn't work out and I didn't end it fast enough and I hurt myself." She said loudly, not quite yelling, but she did raise her voice a notch or two.
'Cause after all, you do know best.
Feliciana felt a tug at her heart-strings remembering Ludwig, not Germany, but the Holy Roman Empire. They looked similar, acted similar, sounded similar, had the same name, and loved her the same.
Try to slip past his defense.
Ludwig opened his mouth to protest before closing it. He knew she was talking about the other Ludwig in her life, but he couldn't help but feel awkward.
Without granting innocence.
"I know what you did and I am not happy. I am not happy with how our relationship has been. Because of us, Kiku killed himself and my brother..." She trailed off not wanting to say it. Her brother also had relationship problems because of Ludwig and herself. Antonio had ignored him since he found out about the affair Ludwig and Lovino-Romano had. It didn't matter how many times Lovino begged forgiveness or promised that he wouldn't do it again. Antonio was hurt and embarrased.
Lay down a list of what is wrong. The things you told him all along.
Feliciana closed her eyes and fingered off the list of thhings that was wrong with their relationship. "There was Kiku, there is the ignoring on my part, there is the abuse on your part, there is my brother, there is your always wanting to go on dates, there is your brother..." She went on.
Pray to God he hears you. And I pray to God he hears you.
Feliciana wanted to fix their relationship, but knew that it wasn't possible with the way things have been going with Ludwig. She would have to leave him. She was praying in her mind that Ludwig would hear the problems, ones that she's already complained about and either fix them, or come to realize that there is no fixing them and they must part ways.
And where did I go wrong? I lost a friend.
Ludwig was feeling his rage build up since the moment she mentioned Kiku. He listened to the problems she was listing, but he wasn't processing or paying attention to the words comeing out of her mouth. He just wanted to punch a hole in the wall, scream, and then take her into his arms and kiss her. He didn't want to think about Kiku, his best friend, killing himself so swiftly. He simply sent Ludwig, Feliciana, Sadiq, Heracles, and Alfred a quick text message saying, "Goodbye forever, I'll miss you." but he added an "I love you very much." to Heracles' message. Ludwig wanted to bury that deep in his memory and live happily with Feliciana without any more pain or loss.
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
Ludwig knew it was his fault mainly that Kiku died, but he also knew that it was Feliciana's fault. If Feliciana hadn't begged him to date her, Kiku would be alive and the three of them would still be best friends. A sweet friendship turned bitter by love.
And I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known.
Ludwig remembered that the night before Kiku's birthday he promised that they would have a sleepover (very childish, he knew this, but they were good friends and Kiku needed some caring for) and Ludwig declined. He canceled on a plan they had been making fot almost a year. Ludwig didn't know that Kiku would become more upset and kill himself that night.
How to save a life.
Ludwig remembered recieving the text and seeing that Feliciana recieved it and Heracles calling in a panic saying that he found Kiku's body laying on the floor with a pile of blood coming from a hole in his head. Kiku had shot his temple in an attempt to make it quick and painless. It worked. Ludwig had felt guilty. He didn't know how to save a life either.
As he begins to raise his voice, you lower yours.
Ludwig stood up with such a force the chair fell and he began yelling at Feliciana to shut up and that he couldn't take this stress and blame anymore. Feliciana closed her eyes and felt her mascara running as she quieted her voice and said, "I'm sorry..."
And grant him one last choice, drive until you lose the road, or break with the ones you follow.
Feliciana looked up at him. "...But you heard the things we need to fix. So I'm giving you two options: either you leave my life and drive until you lose the road, or you and Lovino cut things off and you stop hanging out with those alcohalic gang-members." She said softly but forcefully.
He will do one of two things: he will admit to everything.
Feliciana hoped that he would just say, "I'm sorry and I admit that I've been hanging out with gang-members and that I had sex with your brother, but I will change my ways and we can make this work... please." But such was not the case.
Or he'll say he's just not the same.
"I haven't been hanging out with gang members, and all I did was go on a date with your brother once. If you can't seem to get past that that's who I am, then I don't feel the same way you do." Ludwig said bluntly. He felt a pang of guilt for lying to his love and honestly, he didn't want to deal with this stress anymore.
And you'll begin to wonder why you came.
Feliciana stood up and ran out of the house and drove home alone. She knew he was lying. She saw him with those drunk gang-members and she walked into her brother's room to see that yeah... she felt lied to and couldn't take it anymore. She would stay at her home for the rest of the night.
Where did I go wrong?
Ludwig stood up and joined the party. Nobody heard the yelling over the music and nobosy seemed to notice Feliciana leaving. Ludwig tried to enjoy the rest of the party, but found that he just couldn't.
I lost a friend.
Ludwig drank beer after beer to try to numb himself and feel the pain lessen. It began to work around the third beer and he didn't stop there until he couldn't feel anything at all. He knew that he lost his lover. His best friend that was still alive to smile and cry and laugh and yell and dream and wonder. He knew that he would never get to hang out with her anymore.
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
Feliciana fell onto her bed and sobed into her pillow while gathering her thoughts and emotions. She knew that she had a bitter-sweet relationship, but it left a sour taste in her mouth to have it end so suddenly.
And I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known.
Ludwig was more drunk than he expected to be and while he let his body do whatever it wanted, the little bit of consciousness he had left was reserved for wishing he would have said the truth and danced and sang and drank with Feliciana.
How to save a life.
Ludwig and Feliciana both didn't know how to save lives and it didn't matter anymore. It wouldn't matter in the future anyhow.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend.
Feliciana knew that she lost her only friend and Ludwig knew he went wrong the moment he started hanging out with gang-members and becoming aggressive and violent.
Somewhere along in the bitterness and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known.
Ludwig could taste the bitterness of the situation the way anyone would taste the bitterness of any food made by Arthur Kirkland. Ludwig felt a tug on his arm and a deep Italian voice saying, "Potato bastard..." He turned around and saw a very drunk Lovino draping himself over his arm. Ludwig looked around and saw that Antonio was with the birthday boy and Francis and completely ignoring Lovino. Ludwig wished that Feliciana were there to pull him away from Lovino and dance with him. But since she wasn't here and Antonio didn't seem to care...

Feliciana thought that maybe talking to her brother might cheer her up or maybe trying to talk to Francis, but Francis was with his buddies and her brother was probably still trying to get Antonio to forgive him. Her phone buzzed and she looked to see that she had gotten a text message from Antonio. It read, "i just saw lovino and ludwig walk into a room and they looked very drunk..." Feliciana didn't need to have it spelled out for her and she cried into her pillow until she fell asleep.
How to save a life.
Antonio suddenly stiffened when out of the corner of his eye he saw Ludwig and Lovino walk into a room with beers in their hands, He decided that he should probably text Feliciana about it just so that she could know.
How to save a life.
Ludwig didn't care at this point whether what he was doing was immoral or not. He just needed something to focus on besides beer and feeling awful and hollow. He decided that Lovino could be that distraction.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend.
The next mornin, Ludwig wooke up in his bedroom with Lovino in his bed. "Dammit..." He heard himself say. He had a massive hangover and knew that Lovino probably did too. He remembered what happened between him and Feliciana last night and held his head in his hands. He looked over to Lovino and rubbed his face again.
Somewhere along in the bitterness and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known.
Feliciana woke up in her bed and thought she should text Ludwig good morning until she remembered last night. She knew that not only did he not want to talk to her, but that he was probably naked in bed with her brother with a massive hangover. She laid her head on the pillow and replayed the events of last night. She wished that she could've gotten some actual sleep, but she kept waking up. She wished she could have at least been up all night in Ludwig's arms protectively wrapping around her small frame, promising to keep the bad stuff away. But those promises were empty ones.
How to save a life.
Ludwig felt Lovino begin to wake up. He heard Lovino moan and grab his head due to the aforementioned hangover and teh events of last night. He looked over to Ludwig and crawled into his arms. "We both made mistakes and lost the ones we love, but we still have each other, potato bastard..." Lovino said sleepily.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend.
Feliciana felt like nothing would ever be the same and that she was being cast aside. She realized that this was how Kiku was feeling back when he was alive.
Somewhere along in the bitterness and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known.
Ludwig held Lovino in his arms and was afraid to let go for fear of him leaving to. They didn't even really love each other. As a matter of fact, they hated each other. But that didn't stop them from needing each other.
How to save a life.
Feliciana took up her phone in a shaky hand and began to mimic what Kiku did. She texted Francis, Roderich, Elizabeta, Ludwig, and Lovino the same text, "I am going to miss you very much, but I have to go now. Goodbye." but at the end of Ludwig's she added, "I still love you."
How to save a life.
Ludwig felt his phone buzz and saw that Lovino's buzzed too. He felt his pulse quicken as he and Lovino checked their messages. They both opened their eyes wide and threw on the clothes they were wearing last night before Lovino drove them over to his house.
How to save a life.
When they got there it was too late. Feliciana was dead on the floor in a pile of her own blood. But instead of it being through her head, it was through her heart. She had wanted to suffer for at least a little while because she felt she deserved the pain. A few days after the burial, Ludwig sent similar messages to the people he cared about. The only difference this time was that he had Lovino and his big Brother Gilbert there to stop him. Ludwig lived out the rest of his life never truly loving anyone else, but he eventually married Lovino and Antonio seemed to disappear after that one night. Nobody, not even Francis or Gilbert, had seen him. But they all knew he went back to Spain. They all bitterly lived out their lives knowing that none of them really knew how to save a life.
