Chapter 10
(Mamoru's POV)
I take another drag of my cig, frustrated. I had woken up early, earlier than I was used to. It was something that happened every so often, especially after Minami had died. I never would take another partner after that. I lean on the railing of my balcony as I continue to smoke.
I hear the sliding door of the balcony from the room next to mine, drawing my attention to it. I look over to see the kid sneak out quietly, and watch silently as she lights a cig, leaning on her railing as well. It was the only time I could ever catch the kid smoking, since she came here, usually either early in the morning or late at night. She had been here a few weeks, but I still didn't know a whole lot about her.
I saw her let loose the one time yesterday, and she seemed to have fun with her friends. Other than that, I knew she liked American music, had a weird obsession with those comics she brought, and particularly liked to put hot sauce on most of her food. She was a smartass, with that irritating smirk on her face as she mouthed off to me the first day I met her.
I run a hand back through my hair as I take another drag. I don't know why I noticed this shit about the kid, she was damn irritating, and made life here more difficult. Hell, she was dragging me into Soryu's shit, when I made a point of trying not to get involved with much of anything. I didn't even take as many cases as I used to, my main focus had always been finding out who the hell really killed Minami. My partner had gotten killed during our last big case, and they could bullshit me all they wanted at the station, I knew it was connected to the case we were working.
I watch quietly, drawn from my thoughts as the kid starts pacing on her balcony. She runs a hand back through her long dark hair as she looks out towards the city. She seemed lost in her thoughts, not even noticing I was there. I wasn't entirely sure, but I had an idea why she always woke up so early sometimes to smoke. Kid had to be having nightmares, specially considering all the shit she's probably seen, considering her profession and family. She had a haunted look in her eyes, with a mix of something else that first day we met her. Hell, that was why I spoke up that day, when we talked about just walking away. At least, that's what I figure, seeing as honestly I'm not sure what made me speak up, why the hell I even gave a shit, bringing some irritating smartass kid with us. Specially considering the kid had a distinct dislike for cops.
She sits down, still smoking, looking lost. She shivers, siting there in just shorts and a tank top, and I finally speak up. "Kid." I call out to her quietly, not wanting to wake up her friend. She doesn't hear me, and I call out again. "Hey, kid."
She finally looks over, jumping slightly, looking startled like she didn't know I was there. "What ya want cop?" She asks bluntly, a sharp tone in her voice as she looks at me.
"A lighter." I answer, taking out another cig. She leans towards my balcony, and I shake my head, motioning for her to come over.
She rolls her eyes, before muttering. "Damn lazy cop. Can't even come get a damn lighter."
I chuckle slightly, earning me a glare as she hops her railing, making the jump onto my balcony. I motion for her to sit down, before sitting down next to her. She holds her lighter out, and I take it, lighting another cig.
"And I'm not lazy, ya brat." I say, as I reach over and ruffle her hair. She glares at me, and I can't help but stifle a laugh as she tries to pat down her messed up hair.
"Seem lazy to me cop. What's the point in coming all the way over here just for a lighter?" She asks, glancing at me.
I shrug, not meeting her gaze. "What you doing up so early anyway? Don't kids sleep in?" I tease, smirking at her.
"I'm not a kid, old man. And just... Whatever.. Just happens sometimes..." She answers vaguely, as she shrugs her shoulders, looking out towards the city once more.
"Happens to all of us. We all have things that wake us up sometimes." I reply, glancing at her.
She looks over at me, surprised for a moment, but quickly regains her composure, hiding her surprise. "Some ghost always haunt you, no matter how much you wish they wouldn't." She says quietly, as she shivers once more.
I shrug my jacket off, placing it over her shoulders. She raises an eyebrow at me, but puts her arms through the sleeves of it anyway, not saying anything.
"We all live with ghost kid. We all have our own personal demons to beat. Natural part of life. Just gotta do the best we can, with the cards we've been dealt." I tell her, thinking of not only whatever circumstances she had, but my own as well.
She laughs bitterly, as she runs a hand back through her hair, something I noticed she does frequently. "Yea well. I'm used to being dealt shitty cards, been getting dealt them all my life. Sometimes i think a break would be nice, but no such luck. Sometimes, I think whoever is in charge of all this has a sick sense of humor. When I die I'm having a chat with whoever is in charge." She adds, smirking slightly.
I shake my head at her, laughing. "Shit, kid." I chuckle at her. She smiles slightly, first one I ever seen directed at me.
"Anyway. Got a long day today. I'm gonna try and catch a few more hours before I gotta be up." She says, as she stamps out her cig, getting up.
I stand up with her, and she takes my jacket off, handing it back to me. I take it, putting it back on, before finishing my cig, stamping mine out as well. I watch her jump back over to her balcony, as I take another cig out.
She stops at her door, raising an eyebrow at me. "How are you gonna light that without a lighter?" She asks curiously, since she took hers back.
I meet her gaze, before taking mine out of my pocket, and lighting my cig.
She shakes her head smiling slightly at me, as her brown eyes meet my grey ones. "Damn cop." She says, still smiling. "Maybe you're not so bad after all. Ya know, for a cop." She adds smirking, and I can't help smiling at her, as she goes back into her room.
I finish my cig, before heading back in for a couple more hours of sleep myself.
A couple hours later, I wake up, and go join everyone in the lounge. The two that usually always visit end up joining us a few hours later after that, going over whatever they were up to that night. Sounded like Felicia and Cecilia were joining the black foxes that night, along with some other girls.
"Anyways, should be pretty simple, we go to museums for stuff all the time. This one is a local one, so it shouldn't be as difficult. Oh and it's girls only, the boys aren't coming." Scarlett explains, as she types away on that computer of hers. She pulls up something, turning the screen towards Felicia and Cecilia.
"Anything on any more people for the other mission?" Cecilia asks, glancing at the other two girls.
"Possibly. Paris is talking about drafting a close friend of hers, and Hiro insist that his friend that he's bringing from art school has a cousin that they could bring." Kris answers, shrugging as she rolls her hazel eyes.
"Well, that would be one less thing to worry about, if we found enough people." Felicia says, glancing at Kris, before returning her attention back to the computer in front of her.
"Not to mention how the hell we're even going to get in." Scarlett snorts, as she leans back in the couch, propping her feet up on the nearby table. Eisuke glares at her, but she merely smirks, not moving her feet one inch.
"Felicia is actually our best bet of getting in. But.. Well..." Soryu cuts in, scratching the back of his neck, as he eyes the girls, looking slightly nervous. "She can get us in. She can extend an invitation to the black foxes and some of the ice dragons." He finishes, meeting Felicia's gaze.
Felicia snorts, rolling her eyes. "The only way I can do that, is if I have an invite.. And I don't"
Soryu sighs, before giving her a pointed look. Her brown eyes widen in surprise. "Son of a bitch. They invited Los Lobos didn't they? Fucking hell." She exclaims looking frustrated.
Soryu merely nods. "They did. I don't know whose attending to represent your gang, but as their princess you have the right to attend, and bring whomever you want." He responds coolly, his usual stoic expression on his face.
"And if my brother shows up? Dammit this fucking complicates things." She mutters, putting her head in her hands.
"It gives us our in. We'll deal with the rest when we come to it." Cecilia speaks up, before patting Felicia on the shoulder in reassurance.
"Okay. Well. We have some things to take care of before later, but we'll come back a little earlier than we expect everyone else. Say seven?" Scarlett asks, glancing at the girls as she puts away her laptop.
"Sounds good." Felicia answers quietly, as Scarlett and Kris leave.
Felicia waits until the girls leave, before looking towards Soryu. "I need an actual invite though I think right? An actual paper invite? Also what the fuck do I do if Alejo shows up?" She asks, a slight tremor in her normally calm voice.
"I'm sure Scarlett can get us a copy of the invite. As for your brother... Well, it's your right to attend. But we'll deal with that if we have to. Hopefully we won't." He replies simply, as he shrugs.
"I can get a copy of the invite. The one specifically for Los Lobos. As for Alejo, if he actually even bothers to attend, won't mess with you. He won't want there to look like there's a power struggle in the gang. He won't try anything too public." Cecilia cuts in, and Soryu raises an eyebrow at the blonde.
"Cecilia is right, he won't try anything too public. Just how would you get a copy of it Cecilia?" Soryu asks, glancing at her.
Cecilia smirks, meeting the mobster's gaze. "I have my ways." She answers slyly, not saying anything further.
(Felicia's POV)
Later that night, at about seven pm, Kris and Scarlett arrive in what I suppose could be called mission clothes. Kris sported a black t shirt, the front tucked into a pair of ripped blue skinny jeans. I could see she had a brown belt looped through her jeans, and over her shirt she had a black leather jacket, with matching black combat boots. A long gold pendant necklace hung from her neck, and diamond studs in her ears. She also had a black gold watch on her wrist. Scarlett was dressed similarly, dark shirt and jeans, as well as a jacket and boots.
Cecilia wore darker clothes as well, bringing her whip. Kris and Scarlett both had guns strapped on, the ones they normally kept stashed in their purses. I strapped mine on, in their harness, as we waited for the rest of the girls. The bidders waited with us as well.
"The few others we talked about yesterday are joining us tonight as well" Scarlett announced, as her and Kris plop down on the couch in the lounge.
"We'll see how they do, and if we can trust em." Kris says, propping a foot on the table in front of her. "Should be interesting to say the least." She adds, shrugging.
Eisuke glares at Kris, giving her a pointed look, as he glances from her face to her foot. "Can you remove your foot from the table?" He orders, sounding slightly bored.
"Can you remove the stick from your ass?" Kris responds, rolling her eyes at him, and everyone but Eisuke and Soryu burst into laughter.
"I think that's a no boss." Baba cuts in, laughing.
"Sure sounded like one to me." Ota chimes in, running a hand back through his hair as he smirks.
The elevator dings, interrupting whatever anyone else might have added. It's Rosie and Akio who arrive first, glancing around the penthouse. Rosie has a bag slung over one shoulder, and both girls eye the boys warily. Both are dressed in dark comfortable clothing, and they take a seat, looking slightly uncomfortable.
Eisuke keeps looking at Akio, narrowing his eyes at her, before recognition flickers in his cold brown eyes. "You work here." He states, raising an eyebrow at her.
"No shit sherlock. And you're the arrogant owner of this hotel." Akio answers flippantly, and I can't help snickering at the surprised look on Eisuke's face.
"Watch it. I'm still you're boss." He snaps, glaring at her.
"And I'm off the clock right now. Chill the fuck out." She adds, rolling her blue eyes at him. Rosie smirks at this, and both girls start to finally relax in their surroundings.
The elevator dings again, and this time Paris walks in, followed by a tall slim young woman, with piercing blue eyes and dark black hair that had pink high lights. "Miss Hase." Eisuke says, the shock evident in his voice as he meets the young woman's gaze.
"Eisuke." She smirks, a coy look in her eyes as she meets his gaze, before going to sit down next to Paris.
"This is my friend Shara Hase. She will be accompanying us for the next two missions." Paris adds, gesturing to the young woman beside her.
"You're bringing an actress? Do you know how much shit that could cause if something goes wrong." Kris asks, exasperatedly.
Before Paris could say anything, Shara speaks up. "I can handle myself, don't worry about it." She cuts in, confidently.
The last two to arrive are a raven haired young woman, and a blonde. Both blue eyed. The dark haired had a low cut black shirt on, revealing an array of tattoos, across her chest and down her arms. The blonde gave off a slightly girly vibe, but dressed in dark clothes as well. "I'm Jenna Steffen, I take classes with Hiro. This is my cousin Melonie Anderson." The dark haired girl speaks up, gesturing to the blonde next to her.
"Koro?" Ota asks, his Amber eyes widening in surprise as he looks at the blonde.
"Hi Ota." She answers shyly, a slight blush creeping across her cheeks as she looks to the artist.
"Well alright, that's everyone. Let's get going." Scarlett interrupts, producing a set of keys, as she starts heading for the elevator.
"Damn. I wanted to drive." Kris frowns slightly, eyeing the keys in the red head's hand.
"You can if you want." Scarlett shrugs, as we all pile into the elevator. She holds the keys towards Kris, offering them to her.
Kris shakes her head, still frowning slightly. "Na. I meant my car. You can drive the fucking rapist van." She adds, smirking at Scarlett, who rolls her eyes at her.
"The mission van..." Scarlett starts, giving Kris a pointed look. "Is the only car that can fit everyone."
Kris snorts. "Right. And it just so happens that the mission van happens to be a a big van with tinted windows."
( Scarlett's POV)
A half an hour later, we arrive about a block away from the museum. All the girls get out of the van, except for me and Rosie, who stay behind. I quickly set up the computers, before handing the main laptop over to Rosie, warily. I was slightly nervous, giving the pink haired girl my computer. She had to be good though. Takuto had to get a new phone, after she hacked it, so she must be good.
"Alright Rosie, you're on." I tell her, and she snorts.
"You're nervous about me aren't you? I can tell. Don't worry, it's not my first time with this." Rosie says confidently, so I nod, backing off slightly.
Rosie begins furiously typing away on the laptop, before speaking into the ear piece we all had on. "Okay. Security disabled." Rosie announces, before switching the screens to the security cameras.
"Alright. Thanks Rosie." Kris answers, before leading the rest of the girls in. We watch them make their way through the museum, carefully.
"Stop. Guard will walk by in two minutes." I yell into the the ear piece, and all the girls hide quickly. "All clear." I add, once we watch the guard change directions on the screen.
"Alright. You're gonna want to make a left in the next room, head towards the painting exhibits." Rosie directs, and I smile. She's getting the hang of this. Plus, I had to admit, she was a good hacker. I don't know how happy Takuto was going to be when he finds out we're working with her, but I figure that's a surprise for the next mission.
(Kris's POV)
We start heading towards the painting exhibits, carefully. It felt a little odd, doing this without the boys, but it did give us the opportunity to see what these girls were made of. I was surprised at the fact we had an actress in tow, but she seemed confident in her abilities, and if Paris trusted her, that was good enough for me. I was a little wary bringing in the ones that weren't used to the underground, but better to see if they could handle it now than during the trade a few days from now.
I had gotten used to Cecilia and Felicia since me and Scarlett had been going to see them pretty regularly. I liked them, and at least this world wasn't new to them. Rosie, I liked as soon as I knew she irritated Takkun. I could already picture the look on his face when we meet before the trade, finding out she was working with us. He was still bitching about how he had to get a new phone.
Though I admit I kinda miss the boys, and their constant chattering and arguing they would usually be doing right now. Takuto would be yelling at us for calling him by his nickname, which would just get Hiro to call him it again, and Kenshi would be trying to diffuse it, then Riki would yell at everyone to focus, but not before annoying Takkun a little himself.
We finally reach the painting exhibit, finding the painting. Jenna steps up, examining the painting. "It's real." She confirms, then Paris steps up with Shara, trying to get the painting off the wall, when a slight noise alerts us that we are not alone.
It was still dark, no flashlights shining on us, so it wasn't a guard. Me and Felicia immediately draw our guns, with Cecilia drawing her whip right behind us. "Uh no sign of any guards your way." Scarlett mutters in our ears, as we look around.
"I didn't expect to find so many pretty ladies in one place." The oddly familiar voice says, and we hear quiet foot steps coming our way.
"Dammit Baba." I growl, recognizing the thief. He makes his way over to Paris, taking her hand, placing a feather light kiss on it.
"Why hello pretty lady. Aren't you a beautiful one?" He purrs, leaning close to Paris, who scoffs, as she pushes the flirty thief away, rolling her eyes.
"Back off Lupin. This one is ours." She says, narrowing her eyes at him. Before he can say anything, we hear more footsteps, and Rosie's voice in our ears.
"Guys hurry up, guards coming your way." Rosie announces, and we quickly try to hurry up. Paris, and Shara grab the painting, and we try to navigate our way back.
"Stop!" Scarlett screeches, and we all freeze. "Lazers in that room hang on, we'll disable them.." She trails off, and we hear the sound of keys typing.
The footsteps get closer, and we see a light go across the floor in the very next room. "Fuck. Hurry Scarlett they are right on our asses." I whisper, loud enough for her to hear through our ear piece.
"Son of a bitch." We hear Scarlett mutter. "It's a little more difficult than normal. Hang on we'll get it." She sighs in frustration, as we hear the typing get faster.
We see the light get closer, shining on the edge of the room we're in. "Dammit." I mutter, and Felicia creeps forward, pulling a knife from her boot. Cecilia creeps forward with her. Felicia cocks her arm back, then swings it down, and with the flick of her wrist, flings the knife threw the doorway into the next room.
We hear a small crash, and the foot steps change directions, giving us a little more time. "Almost got it." Rosie mutters, before we hear a sharp intake of breath in our ears. "One of them is still heading your way." She adds, and we all groan, frustrated.
The guard steps into the room, at the same time we hear Rosie exclaim, "Got it!" In our ears. Cecilia cracks her whip, knocking the guard down, and we all make a run for it.
"Another one coming your way!" Scarlett shouts in our ears, and we keep running.
A guard comes straight at us, and Akio steps up. "I got it." She states calmly, as she steps to the side of him, grabbing his arm underneath, and leans towards him slightly, before flipping him right on his ass.
"Well damn. Way to go Akio." I congratulate the girl, and we make a run for it once more. We finally reach the van, all piling in, though I take the wheel this time.
"You think the cops are on their way?" Melonie asks, and I snort.
"Most likely. Not gonna keep up with me though." I answer smirking, and Scarlett laughs.
"Course not. You drive like a bat outta hell, and know the streets better than they do." Scarlett says, laughing.
"I wouldn't say bat outta hell exactly." I say, making a quick right. We hear the sounds of sirens in the distance, but not close enough for me to worry about it.
About twenty minutes later we pull into LRN, dropping the painting off. Scarlett, and Paris get out, and I head towards the Tres Spades to drop the rest off. A little rocky there at first, but we made it.
