Six
Baleigh's POV
"Holy cow! Did she come like that? Or was that you?"
"I don't know! There was too much snow to tell! Stop asking questions Kiera!"
"Sorry! But does the cat really hate you because he's such a cutie!"
"Kiera!"
"Guys! Stop talking! She's up."
I very slowly opened my eyes. The first thing I saw was a bright light in my face. When my vision cleared, I saw more than a light. I saw people standing all around me.
I tried to sit up or even run away but everything hurt. An IV was in my left arm and the sound of a heart rate machine was next to me. There was four people in the room. The first one that I noticed was a blonde girl. She looked really tall and her hair was up in a ballerina bun. Next to her was a tall, broad-shouldered guy. His hair was pitch black and spiked up with gel. He had a very serious look on his face. I didn't want to mess with him.
On the other side of the bed was a messy, blonde haired boy. He must be at least 16 or 17 but he had a little bit of a baby face. His brown eyes seemed to be staring deep into my soul. It was making me freak out even more. The man next to him looked about 40. His brown hair was going grey and his beard was completely grey. He was wearing a doctor's coat with the name Dr. Stone stitched above an empty pocket. He held a clipboard in his arm and was jointing down notes while looking at me every few seconds.
I looked at the 16 eyes that were staring at me. I felt butterflies in my stomach. My head hurt like a jackhammer was inside. My injured arm felt better, but I could still feel a little bit of pain.
"W-who are y-y-you people?" Somehow, my voice sounded hoarse.
The blonde girl spoke first. "Hi! My name's Kiera! This cute guy next to me is Nathan, but you can call him Nate. The blonde guy's name is Collin. He's your mate, BTW, and Nate's dad is the doctor over there. He's super nice and really good with his patients so you don-"
"Woah. Wait a sec. My mate?" I was really confused.
"Yeah! Collin was the one who hit you with his car after he ditched us at the Winter Dance." She glared at him for a second. "Apparently, when he tried to check your pulse he felt that spark that we werewolves feel when you find your mate! Pretty cool, huh? He's been looking for years to find his mate. Cool that you just happened to fall right in front of him." Kiera smiled. She talks way too much.
"I'm confused. You said mate, right," I asked.
"That's right!" she replied.
"And you said werwolves? But werwolves aren't real. They're just myths a-and legends." Having them all looking at me was still freaking me out.
"Silly goose! Werewolves are real! Why, all four of us are werewolves!" Kiera directed to herself and the three guys.
"You sure you didn't hit your head on something?" I asked.
Kiera opened her mouth to answer when Dr. Stone put his hand up.
"I think you should all leave and let Miss O'Conners get some rest. The injuries that she had were pretty bad and they need to heal. Why don't you all ask her questions after she's out of the infirmary."
Kiera sighed before grabbing Nate's hand and headed out the door. Collin looked at me for a few seconds before he trailed behind the other two. Dr. Stone watched them go before he turned back around to look at me.
"I'm guessing you have a lot of questions, don't you," he asked.
"Yes. How do you know me? Why did Kiera say that Collin was my mate? And why does she keep saying that werewolves are real? It makes no sense!" I felt my body shake as I talked.
"Calm down. Don't make things worse than they already are. Your questions will be answered soon enough." Dr. Stone checked the IV, making sure the liquid was getting into my system.
"Why can't you answer them now?" I asked.
"I can only answer one. Some questions take too long to explain. Sometimes you need to find your answers rather than beg for them." He pulled up a chair and sat in it. "So, what would you like to know. Choose wisely."
I thought hard about what I wanted to know. I had so many questions! I wanted to know everything now! But Dr. Stone was right. I can't go begging for my answers. That was life back home. Dad said asking too many questions can get you killed. I believed that for a while, but I learned later on that having too many questions was good in learning. Some questions, however, can get you in serious trouble or make you wait too long.
"Okay. I have one," I finally said.
"Ask away then," Dr. Stone said.
"How do you know who I am?"
Dr. Stone smiled. "That's a very good question." I felt glad that it wasn't a horrible one.
"I know you because of the records that we keep. You see, my family has kept records of every single person they have come across even if it was a brief meeting or a long friendship. When Collin brought you to my care in hoping of saving your life, he wanted to know if your records had any background information about you. I went through our files and was able to find out about your history."
I was amazed by Dr. Stone's words. The way he spoke made my ears and eyes hooked. Must be one of his special gifts.
"About 20 years ago, my father had a bright, young student. She was very beautiful woman named Isabelle. My father met her in the college class that he taught."
"What did he teach?" I asked.
"He taught English Literature. Was one of his passions. So was hers. She was his best student. Always ready to learn, asked a lot of questions, never let her grade slip. She was hoping to become an English teacher in high school. There was a bright future for her. Then everything went downhill."
His head dropped on the last sentence. He then looked up back at me. I was very confused.
"Isabelle met this man in one of her classes. His name was Henry. He was a very smart man. Tall, strong, one of the college's best football player. He worked hard to stay in school, but there was something about him that made my father question their relationship. The two got married a few months after they met. She finished her degree but never went on to teach. My father searched and searched for her, trying to find out where she went.
"About four years later, he found Isabelle and Henry at a trailer park. Apparently, she had given birth to a baby girl. The girl was the joy of her life. She did everything to protect the little child. Wanted the best for her. However, Henry wasn't too happy. He became angry, sometimes abusive to Isabelle. My father was able to get her and the child out of the trailer park and to his home. She stayed with him for a few years. Life was good. Almost a happily ever after."
"How can it almost be a happy ending?" I asked.
Dr. Stone sighed. "Henry decided to come back. Found out where she was staying. He acted like he had changed and promised to take care of her. My father refused but she didn't. Isabelle had hoped he would have changed a little bit. The two decided to go out for the first time in five years. They rented a boat and sailed out in the harbor. It all seemed good. But later that night, my father got a call. They said that the boat that Isabelle and Henry were in had crashed on some rocks. They both were taken to the hospital. My father rushed to the hospital but it was too late. Isabelle had died during surgery. Henry had survived. Only him and the little girl were left.
"It was believed that Henry had crashed the boat because he was angry for Isabelle leaving him. But there was no proof to prove that he did it. After the funeral, my whole family tried to gain custody of the girl but Henry wouldn't let us. He filed harassment papers, saying we were forcing him to give up his only child. Since then, we have been searching long and hard to find her and bring her back to her rightful family."
"That's...that's absolutely horrible," I said. I was so shocked about the story, but something was bugging me.
"My mom had died in the boating accident when I was 5. I remember my dad saying that these 'bad men' were trying to kidnap me. It seemed really odd that the stories are so similar."
"That's because they are, Baleigh." Dr. Stone said. "Isabelle was your mother. You were her child."
Yay! Finished with chapter six! Hope you all liked it! Had to leave a cliffhanger for you all! This is my longest chapter! 1611 words! So happy! Anyway, thanks for reading my book! I'll keep posting!
The chapter picture is what Baleigh's mom might have looked like. I know it's a picture of Anne Hathaway but it's a much better picture than some of the other options.
