Chapter 2

"Wake up."

"No!"

"There's school."

"Fuck school."

"I love you and all but you need to wake up darling."

"Please leave me alone Evan."

"Evan? Hailey what are you talking about? It's me Ames."

What?

I open my eyes to find Amelia looking at me with a confused expression on her face. Sighing I sit up. Last night, I was plagued with my older memories. Although I no longer felt like Evan the way I used to, that did not stop the dreams.

Amelia was looking at me with an annoyed expression marring her otherwise calm and wonderful face.

No matter what, Amelia would never look at me with pity or sympathy. And neither would I.

"Hailey, buck up. I know that you don't feel that way about Evan anymore. I know you lost a lot in that time, but are you seriously going to let your dreams poison your life? No right? And I will not let you. You're my best friend and I will let no such thing happen to you,"

Her face softens and she continues in a softer voice, "Stop making yourself guilty, what was supposed to happen happened. Whatever happened was not your fault. Thinking about Evan will only make you feel guilty, it's going to be alright and you know that I'm not talking about Evan anymore. Evan is not worth it, but you should stop thinking what ifs you were young, you did what you had to." She says. I just nod.

Swinging my legs over the side of my bed, I went into the toilet and took a quick shower, letting the cold water clean my dreams from the night before. I put on some tights and a sweater.

Grabbing my knapsack, I motioned to Amelia to follow me before making my way towards the door. Before I could go though, she grabbed my arm and turned me to look at her. For the first time that morning, I realized that she was wearing makeup. Well, heavier than usual.

"Wait, why don't you put some on?" She said, fishing out her products from her bag. I eye her warily, she never had a problem with me not wearing makeup before, so why was she all hot and bothered now? I give in though. There is nothing wrong with feeling beautiful once in a while.

"If you want to prove to me that you have moved on, then let's start with this. You're gonna feel confident so you're gonna have to look confident." She said

When she finished, I looked at my reflection and saw what she has done to me. I mean, it wasn't much, but the last time I had actually put on eyeliner and mascara was when I was dating Evan. I actually didn't need or want the mascara, mostly because I always managed to poke my eye with the wand every time. Thanking Amelia, I grabbed my bag and hurried down the stairs, Amelia following suite.

All the way to school, Amelia kept quiet, which was so not like her, she was usually mattering on and on about stuff. The people walking on the sidewalks, the cars passing by, the places we drove by, but today she was oddly quiet. So to fill up the car with noise, I told her about my run in with Mason. When I sneaked a glance at her, she was glaring at her hands. I turned my head back to the road.

Parking my car, I opened my door and got out. Amelia still hadn't come out and was still sitting on the seat twiddling her thumbs. Sighing, I went and opened the door. Bending down, I asked her, "Is something wrong?"

She was still glaring at her hands and then she turned to me and said, "Nothing."

She would tell me eventually though, she could not hide much from me however long it took for her, she would tell me.

As we were walking in the hallway, she started becoming more like the normal Amelia. Normal as she was anyway. As she was saying something, I turned my face to look at her.

"Hey, Hailey are you gonna audition for a place in the new musical? I mean you're a pretty good singer."

I could sing, probably but I liked dancing more. So I answered with a shrug and said, "I'm probably going to be dancing at the graduation, I mean. Oomph."

A feeling of deja vu overtook me as a hand snaked around my waist to keep from falling. I looked up to see no other than Mason. Fuck. He was glaring at me as he removed his hand. And I did what? I glared back at him. I took Amelia's hand and pushed past him. I stopped at my locker to pick up my things and also drop some off. I waited for Amelia to finish, she was just four lockers down from me. She was really slow, I tried my best to wait for her patiently. She shut her locker door and turned to me. I could tell that she wanted to tell me something. Well, hell. There was still time before the bell rang though so I waited for her. Just then, the bell rang. I spoke too soon then. There was no way that Amelia was having such an important conversation hurried. I could tell it was important because of the way she was acting. Her whole body language was different, stiff.

We walked to Calculus, which had the devils in it. In fact, most of my classes contained, Devil 1:Mason and Devil 2: Evan. At least half of my classes were with Amelia at least she helped me get through the day. Walking into class, the first thing that I noticed was that my usual teacher was not there. Instead, in her place there was a young gentleman probably in his mid-thirties.

Once everyone was settled, he said, "You're teacher ain't here today and I'm not one at teaching calculus so feel free to do whatever you like. As long as you guys ain't so noisy."

Okay. Okay, this was good. Now I could get Amelia to tell me what was wrong. I turned my body towards her so that she knew that she had my full, immediate attention, unfortunately, that also meant that I could see Mason's face from here. Averting my eyes, I turned them back to Amelia.

She turned behind, took a look at Mason and started speaking so fast that I almost couldn't understand her. Key word being almost. She was my best friend and we had known each other for almost 5 years. So obviously we understood each other, no matter what.

"IthinkIlikehimIknowyoudon'tlikehimbutI really like him." She started speaking normally at the end of her sentence.

"Like who Ames?" I asked, although in my heart I suspected I knew who it was.

She cast her eyes down and said, "Mason, I think I like Mason."
