Third Person POV
Max did his best to focus on the new TV comedy sit com that Mook had come over to his house to watch with him.
He laughed along with Mook at the really hilarious situations that were presented on the show. The part of the show especially that showed a cow escaping into the busy city street and the farmer running after it made Max temporarily forget the disturbing image of Tul and Ella kissing on the sandy shore, their clothes wet and clinging to their bodies ...
Max shook his head to clear his brain of the images that he had conjured in his mind.
"Stay here and continue to watch the show. I'll take care of it," Max said to Mook when the pizza guy buzzed on his front door.
"Oh, I didn't know that you had ordered more beer," Mook remarked when he saw Max carrying in a six pack beer together with the box of pizza.
"I don't think that the six pack that you brought is enough to last the night," Max said as he set the box of pizza and the beer cans on the coffee table.
Mook shrugged as she opened the box of pizza and pulled out a slice and bit hungrily into it.
In the meantime Max took out one can from the six pack and opened it, bringing his lips quickly to the foamy liquid that oozed out of the can as soon as he lifted the tab.
"That's your fifth beer, I believe," Mook remarked, raising an eyebrow at Max.
"Are you sure?" Max asked with a grin. "How many have you finished."
"I have drunk only two cans so far," Mook replied. "That means you drank the four cans from the six pack that I brought and that one you're holding right now is your fifth."
"You're such a good mathematician," Max said with a smirk. "You would put Pythagoras to shame."
"I'm not gonna bite into your bait," Mook said, refusing to let Max's remark annoy her.
For some reason Mook could sense that Max was not really present in her company. His mind seemed to be somewhere else. Mook could sense that Max was just going through the motions of eating and drinking and laughing along with her when the funny scenes from the show came out, but his laughter somehow sounded fake to Mook.
Soon the show ended and Mook didn't think it would be fun to stay any longer. Besides it was already nine o'clock at night. She needed to get her beauty sleep.
"Let me bring you to your car," Max said, getting up from the sofa and staggering towards the door.
"I don't think you should," Mook smirked at Max. "You might not be able to make it back to your front door."
"Watch me," Max mumbled as he stepped down from the mini porch.
"Ohmygahddd!" Mook shrieked as Max lost his footing and fell with a heavy thud on the cemented driveway.
"Oh god, oh god, oh god," Mook said over and over as she half dragged half carried a bloodied Max to her car.
Bright red blood was oozing from one side of his forehead and was trickling down his shoulder and making its way to his sleeve.
Mook roared down the busy street, not caring that she was going beyond the city speed limit, confident that if a traffic officer stopped her she would not get ticketed if the officer saw the bloody mess that Max was in.
She cursed loudly when she couldn't immediately find a parking spot in the hospital parking lot.
Finally she found one and then again half dragged half carried a very drunk semi conscious bloodied Max into the lobby where a hospital staff immediately ushered her into the emergency room.
Once inside the emergency room, the ER nurse attended to Max.
"Please wait in the lobby," the nurse said to Mook. "The ER doctor will be here shortly. I will take his vital signs in the meantime. I will have you paged once the doctor has declared that he can be discharged home or if he has to be admitted for further observation."
Mook nodded wordlessly and walked as if in a daze into the waiting area just outside the emergency room.
After she sat down on one of the chairs and had managed to get her wits about her, Mook took her phone out of her purse and tapped on Ella's number.
"Pick up, pick up, pick up," Mook muttered while she waited for Ella to answer her call.
Finally when she heard some background noise she knew that Ella had swiped on her phone screen.
Without waiting for Ella to say hello, Mook sobbed hysterically into the phone, "Ella! I need you to come and meet me here at the hospital!"
