Chapter 5
Noah stared in disbelief. Bermuda Triangle? Seriously? There was no way he'd ever believe such a foolish idea! It was absolutely absurd! And this "trapped for the rest of their lives" speech? Ridiculous! Everyone else seemed to believe this Quinn guy though. That was what confused him. The fact that everyone but him believed this insanity started to make him have doubts. What if this was the truth? Could it be possible that the legend was real?
He glanced around the group to see everyone's grim faces. The message was clear on each of their expressions. They were trapped. And they were all going to die. Quickly, Noah banished the thought from his mind. If he thought like that, he'd never get anywhere. Instead, he tried to think about how they could have possibly arrived on the island. It was nearly impossible to concentrate though. The silence of the jungle was deafening. Finally though, someone spoke up.
"But is there even a small chance," Autumn said softly, "that there is a way out? One that you haven't found?"
Quinn seemed to consider this for a moment. "Yes. It may be possible. Just because I have not found a way out does not mean that one does not exist." This seemed to lighten the mood of the group.
"Well maybe," Jessica stated, "with our help, we'll find a way to get through this. Maybe we'll find a way out."
Quinn offered a small smile. "Perhaps."
"That's good enough for me!" Autumn said.
Noah really wished someone would bring up the topic of food, since he hadn't eaten since before the ship crashed. There was no way that he was going to ask for food though. He had to keep his dignity. As it turned out, Quinn was the one to bring it up.
"You must be hungry," he said. "Come. I will get you something to eat before we begin our journey."
And so the group of people followed the stranger out of sheer hunger. He led them through the forest, warning them whenever they approached anything dangerous. Noah felt like he'd been walking for hours, although it was probably more like forty-five minutes. His legs were hurting, and he silently wondered if anyone else was as tired as he. It was hard to tell, so he decided to stop thinking about it.
When Quinn finally stopped, Noah was slightly surprised to see a small shelter with tree branches for walls and giant green leaves for a roof. Honestly, he had started to think this man lived in the trees. He gladly walked inside when Quinn had opened the makeshift door, which was really just a slab of wood, for them, gesturing for them to step inside.
It was a cozy little shelter with only one room. It was surprisingly cool in the hut, which Noah was grateful for after the sweltering heat of the jungle. To his surprise, there was actually a bit of furniture, which was obviously crafted from a knife or a sword. Noah didn't complain though. He happily sat down in a surprisingly smooth chair, and he propped his arms onto the oak table, which was just as smooth. There was an empty fire pit in the center of the hut.
Noah watched as Quinn put some logs into it. Instead of lighting it, he simply walked over to a camping backpack that was leaning against the wall. He quickly explained that the fire would only be lit at night as he dug through his pack. Triumphantly, he pulled out a canteen. He offered it to Autumn first, who gladly accepted and took a swig. She passed it off to Jessica, who drank and gave it to Dimitri. He took a small drink and handed it over to Noah, who joyously took a drink. The cool water was magnificently refreshing as it poured into his mouth. He swallowed and handed the canteen back to Quinn, who took a small sip before placing it back in his backpack.
A moment later, Quinn had pulled a container of berries out of that glorious pack. He equally divided them amongst the survivors, and they ate them in silence. It wasn't much, but is was enough. That's all that mattered. When they finished, the silence was not broken. Perhaps it was because no one had anything to say. Maybe it was because no one wanted to ruin the moment. After all, this was the first time since the wreck that everyone was actually happy. Who knew when the next moment like that may be?
