Chapter 17

Bill's POV

It felt kind of strange being back in this room, I was comfortable in Pine Tree's room. Oh well.

I ended up falling asleep quickly, but my dreams were tormented. I was still getting used to the fact that I could dream too since I was human - it still weirded me out. I could never remember them and that was highly agitating.

I was suddenly shot out of my dream and shot up in bed, breathing hard. I saw someone, just a blur, fall off the bed in shock. I took a moment to breath, trying to grasp the flimsy remains of my dream, but it was already gone. I growled and crawled to the edge of the bed to see Pine Tree lying flat on his back on the ground, breathing rapidly.

"I-uh... Morning."

I narrowed my eye at him. "Why did you have to wake me up, Pine Tree? I'm trying to remember my dream."

"S-sorry. We're going to the park in a bit." He apologized and scooted back so he could sit up. "You scared the crap out of me man, I didn't expect you to sit up so fast."

I rolled my eye. "That's what happens when you disturb someone."

"Well, you were muttering and talking to yourself in your sleep and I just tapped your shoulder. It's not like I shook you like last night." Pine Tree fixed his shirt and sighed.

"Wait, what was I saying? Tell me." I leaned forward, gripping into the edge of the bed.

"Um...I-I don't know."

I glared at him. "Are you lying?"

"N-no."

"Then why are you stuttering."

"Because I'm not comfortable being alone with you, that's why." He stood up to his feet and took a step back.

I sighed, annoyed. "Do you have clothes I can borrow? I am starting to hate this flannel stuff."

"You can just-"

"Pine Tree. Come on." I growled.

He muttered some disrespectful words to himself and left to get me some new clothes.

I sighed and sat cross legged on the bed and tried to recall my dream, but it was all hazy and dark. Every time I almost grasped a memory, it'd slip away. Was it like this for all humans?

Moments later, he returned with a white t-shirt. "Here, you can keep on those jeans."

I sighed. "Do you kids wear anything besides jeans?" I growled.

"Nope." He chuckled and walked out while I took off the flannel shirt and slipped on the white one. Both of their parents, thankfully, were at work today, so I didn't have to sneak around. I walked out and over the bathroom. I closed the door behind me and took a moment to look in the mirror.

I never really had studied my own reflection, and my reflection - surprisingly still - looked like a stranger. I ran my fingers across my face and through my hair. I examined my teeth and my eye. "So weird..." I whispered.

The door swung open and slammed into my hip. I gasped and I slipped and fell down onto the bathroom floor.

Pine Tree looked around the door and laughed. "Ha, sorry, I didn't know anybody was in here."

I glared up at him. "Thanks." I got up and brushed myself off and awkwardly pulled at the white shirt. I gave one last look at myself in the mirror and swallowed. It's not like I missed my natural form, just being human was still so bizarre.

"What you staring at?" Pine Tree asked, breaking the silence.

I looked at Pine Tree in the mirror and I noticed that even still, Pine Tree looked more human than I did. I guess I'd always be a demon anyways. "N-nothing." I stammered and exited the bathroom.

Pine Tree looked out and watched me walk down the hall, confused. "You sure? You seem a little weirded out."

"It's nothing." I repeated more sternly. I was doing this for Arrow. It'd all be worth it soon enough.

Shooting Star exited her room and tugged at the sleeves of her loose pink sweater. She still maintained some of her old childish style, even now. "Ok," she said, "I'm ready." She looked up at me. "Did Dipper lend you a shirt?"

"Yeah. I don't like flannel."

She cocked and eyebrow before shrugging and brushing it off. "Come on Dip-Dot!"

He exited the bathroom, throwing his hair brush back in the bathroom. "Kay, let's go."

All three of us exited the house and set off to wherever this park was. "Did you invite, uh, Eleanor?" I asked.

Shooting Star clasped her hands together for a moment. "No..."

"Why?"

Shooting Star glanced at me quickly, but I knew what she was saying.

I scoffed. "Oh, I see."

"Bill, you know that we don't trust you fully, yet." Shooting Star said carefully. "We're only taking proper precautions until we can trust you."

"Wow, feelin' the love here." I said sarcastically.

"Well, it's true." Pine Tree spoke up.

"I didn't ask for your input." I spat and sighed. "Let's just get this park business over with."

"You're supposed to be having a good time!" Shooting Star tried her best to say happily.

"Well, what am I supposed to be happy about?"

Shooting Star bit her bottom lip as she thought. "Uh, because you're spending time with your friends?"

"Friends?" I looked at Pine Tree instinctively and he immediately look away.

"Don't look at me, I didn't say it, she did."

I exhaled deeply. "So, you are putting us on friends terms?"

Shooting Star hissed air through her teeth. "Yes..."

"Great!" I slung my arms around both of them. "Perfect!" This was what I needed, I just needed to get Pine Tree to see it and I'd be headed in the right direction. This park time would have to be used as valuable time, then...

"We're here!" Shooting Star exclaimed. At least she knew about trying to get on people's good sides - she was smart, unlike her nerdy twin brother.

There were slides and bars to climb across and a giant pit of sand surrounded it with swings in it. Oh, this is a park. I realized. Act quick, Cipher. I snatched Pine Tree's hand and dashed off to the swings.

He gasp and he was lurched forward.

I let go of his hand and I leapt onto the swing and balanced on the seat part with my feet. I gripped onto the chains beside it and smiled down at him. Ok, I thought to myself, friends? Friends? How am I going to make him be my friend? I never tried to make friends by being kind or whatever - oh well. Time to experiment now. "Pine Tree!" I called as he stood awkwardly in the sand, holding his arm gingerly.

"What?" He asked.

"Come on the swings with me!"

Shooting Star ran up and shoved her brother forward. "Come on, bro bro!"

Pine Tree sighed and took the swing next to me and Shooting Star grabbed the one next to him. He stood up on the seat like I was and used the chains to heft himself up so he could stand on the swing as well.

Shooting Star sat on the swing normally and kicked her feet, propelling her backwards and swinging herself forward.

As much as I was angry that Arrow couldn't be here, I had to set a joyful mood to make Pine Tree be friends with me or else my plans would fail. I swung ever so slightly on the swing next to Pine Tree.

"So," I started, "do you guys usually come to the park?"

"No." He answered. "Usually little kids come here."

"What do you mean?" I asked, confused.

"Little kids, kids that are, like, eight." Pine Tree held tightly onto the chains beside him.

"Oh," I laughed, "in that case, I'm way too old to be here."

Pine Tree nodded. "But Shooting Star wants us to be on good terms - be friends yah know? - so, this is her way of doing it."

"Shouldn't we give her what she wants?" I asked and looked out at the grassy field beside us.

"Meaning...?"

"Meaning, we become friends, to make her happy?" I tried my best to persuade him.

"Well... I guess... I do want her happy." Pine Tree moved his feet around on the swing seat awkwardly.

"Why don't we do it, for her?" I persisted.

"When did you start caring about her feelings?" His tone had a sour tinge to it.

"Well, I'm human, I should care, right?"

Pine Tree shrugged and thought. "I guess so."

"If you don't want to be friends," I whispered, "we can fake it for her if that makes her happy."

"I really don't know why you are going to such lengths for something so petty?"

"I'm trying to get on good terms too, Pine Tree." I lowered my voice.

He sighed and examined his shoes. "I guess."

"So, it's a deal?" I asked and extended out one arm out to him, my hand open.

Pine Tree looked at my hand and then up to me, straight in the eye. For a horrifying moment, I thought he remembered everything about me, but he was just being cautious. "Deal." He whispered, and shook my hand.

I felt so nice and natural to shake his hand and brought back those memories of possessing him. That had been fun. I released his hand and nodded. "What should we start off with to convince her?"

Pine Tree looked over at his sister fondly and smiled softly. "Let me think."

He obviously cared for his twin, and now I was using it against him.

Pine Tree's eyes lit up and he turned a smiling face towards me. "I know exactly what to do to start." He carefully leaned over on the swing, gripping in the chains, and whispered to me. "Lets play tag."

I leaned away, confused. "Tag?" I repeated, baffled.

"You don't know what tag is?" He whispered, still trying to balance on the swing's seat.

"No...."

He chuckled and glanced over his shoulder at Shooting Star, who was occupied with her swing to notice our plotting.

"It's a game where someone is 'it' and the other has to run and not get touched by the person that's 'it.' If you get touched but the person that's it - or 'tagged' - then you are 'it' and you chase the other."

"What's weird game." I commented.

He hopped off the swing and smiled to his sister. "Come on." He told me.

I leapt off and we raced to the field.

"Dipper! Bill! Where are you going?" Shooting Star called from the swing.

"Nowhere! It doesn't matter!" Pine Tree called back laughing.

At least I didn't feel guilty yet for using Pine Tree's kind, caring heart against him.
