CHAPTER 17
"Ready?" Michael shook me when we both jumped in the cab of his truck.
"Uh, no?" I replied, worried.
"Good. Let's go!" And with that, he gunned the truck right towards the hillbilly engineered bridge. We had backed up a few dozen feet for a running-or would it be driving?- start, and I saw the speed hit sixty. Sixty-five. Seventy! We hit the edge of our bridge just as we hit seventy-five. We flew just inches above the road, and when I opened my eyes, we were over the bridge, heading home.
As we passed the place where Michael and I got our trucks, Michael said,"It's Joe's birthday in a few weeks, what are you getting him?"
"Oh yeah, September twenty-first. I have no idea what to get him. What are you getting him?"
"Well, I have an idea, and we can say it's from both of us. What do you say?"
"Sure, what is it?"
He turned the wheel sharply, cut through a few shrubs, I should say brutally murdered, and stopped outside the Jeep dealership. A new car? Sounds good to me. We went inside and found the keys, and decided to get him one he'll love.
"His favorite color is blue right?" Michael asked me.
"Yep, Let's find a blue offroading Jeep!"
We found exactly what we were looking for, and I got to drive it home! We hid it a mile away, and spent the day getting it tricked out. We decided to paint "UNDEAD" on the doors for that extra touch. Michael and I hid it under some fallen branches, and it was hidden. We went home that night to show Aaron what we found.
"That's the sweatshirt she had the day this all started. She wouldn't leave it. Right?"
"That's a little creepy that you remember that," Luke remarked.
"But, where would she be if she was still alive? Or anyone else?" Joe said from his bed.
"Well, if it was in the river, maybe she's somewhere upstream," Aaron said.
"She would hide in a building, maybe have weapons and food as well," I told them.
"But how much food? What if she is trapped when the zombies come?" Aaron said in a worried tone.
We went to the laminated map to see where she might be. There was a red dot for our location. We looked at the movie theater, then everything upstream of it. We found that area to be mostly unpopulated. Only a few houses were there. Some factories. And a gun shop. A small one, if I remember correctly. Luke and Aaron went to look around, and were armed in case things got bad.
So the three of us just hung around, rode to our old favorite places, and set off a few footbombs. A few dozen actually. On on our way back from the sports store with a hundred deflated footballs, we decided to stop at the hobby shop. It had everything from trains to model cars. We took a bunch of models to build, as well as some snack bars behind the counter. We counted thirty-six in total.
On our way out, I picked up a drone. It had a camera, and I decided it wouldn't hurt to fly it around, so I got a bunch of AA batteries, AAA batteries, and lot of rechargeable model batteries. On the way out, I saw Michael hide something in the cooler in the back of the truck. I decided I wouldn't look at it in case it was a surprise. I told him about the drone but he didn't say anything about what he had hidden in the cooler.
