Chapter 28

Dipper

When I woke up in the attic, I felt angry and depressed. Bill's words hurt my heart, knowing they were somehow true. I got up and wiped my tears away. "I have to go see Eleanor!" I declared to no one in particular. I crouched back down in the 'cowardly stance.' "But...she'll probably just run away again." I shook my head. I couldn't give up, for Eleanor.

"I'll track her down to help her...even if she runs...I'll continue trying." I darted out of the shack. I slammed the door quickly behind me only to hear it open again.

I turned around to see Mabel.

"Dip, where you going?" She asked as she peeked her head out.

"I'm going to help Eleanor." I informed her.

Mabel stepped out to me. "You're only gonna make it worse." Mabel said quietly. She reached out her hand towards mine.

I yanked my hand back. "No. I have to do this. Something big is going on and I could discover all the secrets of Gravity Falls if I found out what she's up to!" I said angrily.

"How are you sure she's the key to your stupid investigation?" Mabel asked a little sassy.

I frowned at her angrily. "I just know. Now I have to go. You can come with me, but that'll only slow me down with you trying to be persuasive." I went to run, but Mabel grabbed my arm.

"I'll come. I won't slow you down, just trying to put some common sense into your head." She said while tapping her head.

I rolled my eyes exaggeratively. "Fine. Come along." I sighed. Anything to make her shut up...
*Poor Mabel :(*

I started to run off again and Mabel followed right behind me. It felt strange that we were the ones going to her house instead of Eleanor trekking over here. The trees started to thin out leading to another clearing where her giant house lay.

Mabel gasped. "Whoa! She lives there?" Mabel exclaimed shocked.

"Yah. I guess so."

Mabel rubbed her arm awkwardly.

I knew exactly what she was thinking. Pacifica was a snooty girl with a large house and technically better everything. Mabel was jealous and a little nervous Eleanor would become another Pacifica.

I put my arm around her. "Hey, don't worry. It's just a big house, it doesn't say anything about Eleanor in general." I assured Mabel.

Mabel nodded, but I could sense her doubt.

I walked up to the front door and knocked on it.

A women, most likely Eleanor's mom, opened the door. "Hi!" She said cheerfully.

Standing by her mom suddenly brought back the thought of how short I was. "Hi." I said. I went straight to the point. "Uh, I'm Dipper, this is Mabel, we are looking for Eleanor."

Her mom put her hands up to her cheeks. "You two are so adorable! Are you twins?"

I blinked surprised that she didn't answer. "Yah..."

She smiled big. "How cute! And Dipper, what an adorable name!"

My face burned. I really wanted her to stop using the word adorable.

I smiled awkwardly. "Ha ha, yah, where is she?"

Her mom continued smiling, but compromised. "She's inside in her room."

"Thanks."

Mabel smiled and waved at her. Mabel leaned over and whispered in my ear. "I like her."

I sighed. "Well I don't," I whispered back. ", I'm not 'adorable.'"

Mabel laughed.

"Where is her room?" I asked her mom.

"Down the hall." She said pointing in the direction.

I nodded, walked down and opened the door. "Eleanor?" I saw her sitting on her bed, reading a book.

She looked up and she almost fainted off her bed. "D-Dipper...Mabel...why are you here? In my house?"

I felt Mabel grip my had tightly.
She's not like Pacifica... I thought.

"I need to know what you're doing secretly. Just give me any clues you could possibly think of." I said as I sat on her bed with Mabel.

Eleanor still stared at us in shock. "I can't, even if I wanted to, I can't."

"Because of Bill?" Mabel asked.

Eleanor slouched.

I narrowed my eyes. "I feel like you could tell us something, but you don't want to tell us." I inferred.

I could see her fidgeting as if she was uncomfortable. "Why do I even have to listen to you guys?" She said tersely.

SNAP. Mabel broke. All her thoughts of Eleanor acting like Pacifica over flowed Mabel's dam.

Mabel slammed the bedroom door. "I'll tell you why you have to listen to us! You might be in complete and utter danger! And your lying to us!" Mabel was on a roll of rage.

Eleanor stumbled off her bed and against the wall.

Mabel stomped over to her. "Your lying! And keeping secrets!" Mabel's face was red with anger now. "I wanted to be friends with you, but you obviously don't care!"

Eleanor's terrified gaze darted back and forth. "M-Mabel...I-"

"No! Shut up! Shut! Up!" Mabel screamed. "Everything you say is a lie! Every word that comes out of your mouth is a lie!"

Eleanor couldn't seem to find the words to speak.

Mabel stopped, breathing heavily.

I grabbed her arm and pulled her back so she could sit down.

Eleanor's eyes seemed to water. "I don't want to lie to you guys! It's just..." She looked at the ground.

Mabel bit her lip. "I know you could tell us something...but you don't want to. Even though you can."

Eleanor seemed broken hearted. "I know." She admitted.

My eyes widened. "So, you aren't gonna tell us?" I pressed.

Eleanor narrowed her eyes at me. "No."

I stood up. Apparently it was my turn to be mad. "Why?! Why not?!"

Eleanor planted her foot forward. "Because! Everything I've worked for will be wasted!"

I studied her in shock. "Worked for? What does that mean?"

Eleanor stared at me speechless. "I...I, just-"

"So you're working on something?" I continued to ask.

Eleanor's mouth hung open. "No. I was just saying." She began to breath deeply as if she was trying to control herself.

"Tell me!" I insisted.

"No!" Her voice was panicky.

My blood boiled. "What is so important?!" I shouted.

Eleanor's lip quivered. "I think you should have guessed by now that I'm. Not. Telling. You-" She leaned closer. "-Anything."

I grimaced at the fact she wasn't giving in. "You are only making this worse for all of us!" I cried.
I didn't want tears coming down my face, but, here I was.

Eleanor shoved me back. "Get out of my house." She growled.

Mabel stood up from the bed. "I told you Dipper, it would only make it worse." Mabel murmured. Mabel grabbed my hand and started to walk out.

I took two steps, but turned back around. "You know...I had high hopes in you...it was right...you can't trust anyone." I told her, barely able to get my voice to work.

"It?" She echoed.

I ignored her curiosity. "I thought we had something." I said in a hush voice. "Obviously not..." I walked out the door and left her there.
