Chapter 1

In school before the apocalypse

Jess's POV

"Emily, don't do that," I told her in a stern voice.

"But Jess, it's funny and you know it," Emily said with a whiny voice.

"Jess, you don't have to laugh at everything she does. I know don't," chimed Laura.

"Seriously you don't and while we're on that topic, you don't have to laugh at everything my brother says ether," Lauren said walking into the classroom and sitting in the desk behind me.

"Lauren, I do not laugh at everything your brother says," I said getting defensive about the topic.

"Well that is true, you hardly laugh at the things Merle says. Daryl, however," Lauren continued.

"Okay, okay, maybe I do laugh at everything Daryl says, but the things I laugh at are pretty funny," I say with a smile on my face. I totally won this argument, I thought to myself.

"Oh really, how about last week? Remember that one thing Daryl said that you thought was hilarious," Laura said with a smirk on her face. The smile on my face had disappeared.

"What he said was really funny," I said. What he actually said wasn't really that funny, but I wanted to make him feel good about himself, I thought.

"None of us were laughing," confessed Emily.

"Shut up!" I yelled. We continued our conversation until Emma and her friends walked into the room. They made their way over to their seats which were conveniently in front of us.

"Oh look, it's Jess and her group of weird, pathetic friends," Emma said. Her group of friends laughed at her comment. The whole class went silent.

"Oh look, it's the bitch of the school and her sad, pathetic friends that only use her to become popular," I replied. The class ooed like we were in fourth grade and my friends were laughing their asses off.

"What did you just call me?" She asked looking down at me.

"Oh, I think you heard me or do I have to repeat myself," I said standing up from my seat so we were now eye level.

"You know Jess, something's going to happen to you and when that happens I'll be there laughing my ass off," Emma gave me a cold, evil stare.

"What makes you think I'm going to be the first one to have something happen to them," I say returning the look to Emma.

I heard the door open and immediately sat down. "Hello, class. How is everyone today? Emma, sit down!" The teacher yelled walking into the classroom.

"What? Jess is the one that started this," Emma said turning to face the teacher. I peaked around her and just shrugged my shoulders.

"Emma, Jess is doing nothing. Stop trying blame things on her that she didn't do," the teacher put his bag on his desk and got out a stack of papers. Emma sat down at her desk.

The bell rang and the teacher began passing back old paper. Homework, test, and a new notes packet. He put my latest test on my desk. "Jess, that's 5th 100% in a row. How do you it?" Lauren asked.

"I don't know. I just study the material and do practice problems," I said putting my old work into my binder. The teacher began teaching today's lesson. He would call on the occasional student to go up and solve the problem, but once they started getting harder he would call me more. I was explaining a problem to the class when the P.A. system went off.

"Jessica Grimes, please bring your stuff and head down to the main office. Jessica Grimes, please bring your stuff and head down to the main office. Thank you."

Everyone stopped writing and looked at me. Of course, it had to be me, I thought to myself. I looked at the teacher, "Don't worry Jess, I'll finish the problem. Just grab your stuff and head down there," he said. I walk back to my desk and put my stuff into my navy blue backpack. I put my backpack on and walked out the door.

I walked down the hallway with the blue lockers I see every single day. Occasionally I would see one covered in streamers and balloons, that's how you knew it was someone's birthday. As I walked past many amounts of classes you could sometimes hear the faint talking of girls. Usually, they're talking drama, which is the best part of high school. I got to the door of the main office. I looked through the glass window to see a boy sitting in front of the principles office, and standing in front of the front desk was my dad and Shane.

"What are guys doing here?" I asked walking into the main office.

"Oh thank god they didn't get to you!" Shane rushed over and embraced me with a hug.

"What are you talking about?" I asked my face smooshed up against Shane's chest.

"We'll talk about it later. Come on, we gotta go," my dad said as Shane pulled me out of the office.

"Okay, what just happened in there?" I asked as soon as we got out of the school.

"We needed a reason to get you out of school, because last time we told them you were in training, but they didn't believe us," my dad said walking to the car parked on the curb.

"So what did you tell them?" I asked stopping in my tracks. Knowing them it was probably something really, really, stupid.

"Well, we kind of told them that someone was trying to kidnap you because your dad put them in jail and they want revenge on your family," Shane said with a smile on his face.

"Are serious!? You told them someone was going kidnap me just to get me out of school!" I yelled.

"Are you mad at us?" Asked my dad.

"Yes, because we are learning trigonometry and I want to be there to make I understand it, and no, because you got me out of school early," I said lowering my voice as I got to the end of that sentence.

"Okay, now that we know she is not completely mad us let's go get something to eat," Shane said getting into the cop car. I climbed into the back as my dad started the car and we drove off.

2 hours later

My dad, Shane and I were all in the police car eating burgers and fries. They were talking about how women don't know how to turn a light off. "I came home one day and all the lights in the house were on," Shane said. "When I confronted her about it I heard the exorcist's voice come in my head, "you sound just like my damn father," and him always complaining about the power bill," Shane continued laughing as he talked.

"Well at least your having such a good time. Lori and I didn't have such a good night last night," my dad said looking down at the fry in his hand.

"What do you mean bud?" Asked Shane. I sat in the backseat on my phone eating my food minding my business.

"She just becomes so impatient when I try to talk. This morning Lori and I had a fight. She didn't even notice Carl and Jess were in the room. They had to go to school with that fight in their head," my dad whispered glancing back at me.

"Rick, you and Lori have a good relationship going and this one fight will not...," Shane was interrupted by the radio going off.

"Two Caucasian males heading down route 77, both have a firearm," the radio stopped. My dad started the car back up and I put my trash up front with theirs. Shane threw away our trash and we made our way to route 77.
