Routine
Routine
Emma was back to her routine. She was waiting on her fingerprints and got a hit when she walked into the office, waiting for shift change.
Dr. Chance Burg had a very boring day. He was a nice older man on his third marriage. "Someone got flowers" He smiled.
"Someone left you flowers?" Emma smiled. "You got flowers?" She figured the wife sent them to him.
"Uh, no. You. Emma. You got flowers!" Chance smiled.
Emma walked to the office that they all shared and stared at the pretty flowers. It was a mix of gorgeous flowers sitting on the desk. Roses, tiger lilies, sunflowers and a small red flower. The arrangement was big and pretty. She took the card and opened it.
Sorry we scared you. It was a pleasure to meet you.
Cash.
She stared at the card. "Who is it from?" Chance asked. He heard the crazy invasion story but she left out the swords and the vampire. She said the guy owed them money and they were making sure he was dead.
Emma took a breath. "One of the intruders from the other night."
"What! But..?" Chance was confused. "That never happens to me. No one barges in, scares me and leaves me flowers. So, some gang member or drug dealer likes you! At least he has money!" Chance winked.
Emma laughed. "Right? And he has a consistent job!" They laughed and inside she was confused. She sat most of the night and looked at the flowers. She looked at her phone and sighed. Trevor would still be awake. She told him about the flowers.
"What?" Trevor was freaking out. "Why would he do that?"
"I don't know. I'm confused as well. Maybe to be nice?" She was confused and unsure.
Trevor smiled. "Right. Nice. He liked you. Emma, you can't keep them!"
"I can't send them back, Trevor! I don't know anything about Cash. There is no last name. They are probably long gone." Emma was sure of that.
Trevor nodded. "Sure. Just be careful. No more run-ins with hunters."
Emma heard the doorbell in front. "Gotta go. Work is calling or ringing." She hung up and went to open the door.
Another burned body. Great. She was waiting for the hunters to come back. She secretly was hoping but no. No, she hoped they didn't come back.
This body was human. She breathed easier. She was through the autopsy and the phone rang.
"Dr. Hinkle?" Emma answered.
"Dr. Beckett. What have you got on the burnt body from the other day? Anything?" Dr. Hinkle asked.
"Oh. I actually got a hit on fingerprints. I have an ID. Travis Biggs. I have an old driver's license and I am sending that to you now. I have another body. Burned. Different MO though. I don't think they are related." Emma had to stop talking.
"Good work. I will get this to the police here. I'll get back with you." Dr. Hinkle promised. Emma was worried and work helped. She finished her work for the night and Dr. Hinkle called back.
"I just got the report from the police. They are calling this an accident. He had no family and no one hated him that they could find. He just burned up in his car. They believe that the car shorted out and caused the fire. He was stuck in his seat belt. Accidental death. Cremate him and send everything to me. Thanks, Dr. Beckett." Dr. Hinkle sounded relieved and ready to be done with this case.
"Thanks, Dr. Hinkle. I will add those findings to the file and close this case." Emma was relieved. She hung up. It was an easy case. She knew who the police was so this was simple. She would have to call Byron and thank him. He just helped her out of an impossible situation.
This problem solved itself by way of Byron McIntyre. Emma was hugging him when she saw him next. The body was already cremated thanks to the hunters and the report was already done. Problem solved. She finished the file before her shift was over. The ashes were bagged up and the file was sent.
The other body was easy to figure out. He died of smoke inhalation. Most people think that someone in a fire dies by flames or heat but it's the smoke. That body went in the cooler and the report was sent. She was done and now she was going home to shower.
