Chapter 3
A petite woman stood over a large black wolf, screaming at the top of her lungs. Her voice was filled with anger as she gestured at the wolf, making different threats. The wolf looked up at her with stubbornness in his eyes as if he knew what she was saying. I could hear the words but none of them were making any sense. While I watched the scene in front of me intently, a small wolf came up and sniffed me. I called out to the wolf but all that came out was a strained baby whine.
He had beautiful silver fur that reflected the light when he moved. His eyes were a smooth brown and they looked soft and welcoming. I reached out to pet the small pup but my arms were to small and I couldn't reach. He came closer to me touching my small palm with his wet nose. I rubbed all around trying to find somewhere he likes. He moves his head right under my hand which allowed me to scratch behind his ears. As soon as I scratched the spot, content little noises escaped his mouth along with a wolfish smile. I giggled at his cuteness and he looked to be laughing with me, but of course, wolves don't laugh.
He nuzzled me softly and pulled me out of my crib. I gripped his thick fur with my small, chubby hands, afraid of falling. He nudged me softly, encouraging me to trust my short legs and walk with him. I tried to stand, but failed miserably and fell to the ground, getting a face full of snow. I forgot to let go of him before I fell and took him down with me.
We rolled on the forest floor together playfully, having the most fun in the world. I crawled onto his back, straddling him, and doing my best to ride him like a horse. For the most part I succeeded until he got annoyed and threw me off. I laid on the ground giggling away without a care in the world.
When I looked up, five other pups were running our way to play. I knew they were a family, but each one looked entirely different. The smallest wolf out of all of them could not exactly walk yet because he was so young. He did his best to move on his belly so he could get closer to where I was.
The wolf I was riding brought me over to him and laid me down softly so I could reach him. We both laid there cuddling each other while I played with his soft paws. He would paw and nibble on my ear while I pulled his fluffy tail and tugged on his silky fur. The lady who had been yelling before stomped our way and ripped me away from the pup's.
"I will get my way no matter what," the woman said as we drifted away together.
"Belle," the silver wolf called out to me.
I turned slowly, reaching out to him, wanting to go back and play some more. The baby wolf tried to stand once again and tumbled down the small hill, hitting the lady's feet when he finally stopped. She looked down at him with love in her eyes. She picked him up so his eyes would be level with hers before speaking.
"Don't worry little one, we will be back very soon. Guess what? When I come, I will bring you the best present ever and we will help you be who you were meant to be, I promise," she kissed his cheek before putting him down and we both continued to drift away.
"Wolfie."
They all stand at attention and look at me from the top of the hill.
"Wolfie?"
The larger wolf barks angrily and they all whimper, walking away back to their den.
"Wolfies!"
"Belle wake up!"
"Huh?" My eyes opened slowly, and I see Adam sitting next to my bed, watching me intently.
"What were you dreaming about?"
"I'm not sure. I mean, it's nothing important, just a regular dream. Why are you in my room?"
"Then why were you crying wolf?"
I stared at him in confusion before realizing that he's right. I literally just cried wolf. "It was Wolfie to be exact," I said, laughing. "I was dreaming about this cute little pack of wolves in the forest. I was a really small child, maybe a baby. Instead of being scared I felt comfortable.... they were like friends."
He sat there, jaw working for a good long minutes. There was a glint in his eye, but I couldn't decipher what it meant exactly.
Finally, he opened his mouth again and said, "I think it's time I explain to you what's going on before you remember it all."
"What do you mean? What are you talking about?"
I could feel my heartbeat speeding up. All the time I had been here, all the time since I had left this house last year, I had only wanted answers. Now he is sitting here in front of me, offering to tell me everything I wanted to know, but something's telling me I shouldn't do it.
"I'm going to explain it to you, everything. But I have to show you first. If I try to explain it to you, we would never get anywhere since you ask too many damn questions."
"I don't ask a lot of questions."
He rolled his eyes and motioned for me to follow him out of the room. For the second time in the last 24 hours, I was stuck deciding whether I should follow him or stay where I was. This time I decided to stay and go back to my beautiful dream.
"The dreams will only get worse the longer you stay oblivious. You need to see where they are coming from. Please just come with me so I can explain."
I got up and followed him, mumbling under my breath about how I didn't want to get out of bed and that I was still tired. He led me down multiple hallways and finally down a staircase to a door. He turned and faced me with a look of pity on his face.
"We have to go through the basement to get to where I want to take you, so you're going to have to bear with me. The only other way inside this room is the cemetery outside, and it's shut off because of the rain."
"I can handle seeing the basement. I need to do it at some point, so why not now?"
"It's not ONLY the basement I'm worried about.... it's what's in it."
I pushed passed him and barged into the basement, tired of being treated like glass. As soon as I saw what was inside, my insides hit the floor and shattered into a million pieces.
He is here.
Those three words rang through my head over and over again. I had just warmed up to being here, thought I was safe, and now I see he's here.
In the middle of the basement hung the cage that I was locked up in and forced to sleep in night after night. Now he lays at the bottom of it, looking like a starved monster. I could see every single bone in his body protruding out of his skin. I could tell a good amount of them had been broken long ago by the amount of bruising on his skin. The floor below him was covered in blood that I now noticed had been dripping from his toothless mouth.
"Is he... "
"No, he's alive, barely," Adam glared at the small, cramped cage and walked passed it quickly, pushing some food through its iron bars.
"Cherie? Is that you? Oh, I knew you would come back to me. I knew you were better than the others, just needed some training," he said, giving me a toothless grin.
"What makes you think that I would ever come back for anyone as disgusting as you? I hated you. I will always hate you!" I screamed at him, standing just out of his reach.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!" he reached out to grab me while screaming in agony but I just stayed there and watched him, enjoying his pain.
I felt an arm wrap around me protectively and guide me away from the cage. I could feel the rage build up inside of me but the further away I got, the harder it was for me to hold onto that rage. Just as I was trying to hold onto the last wisp of fury, Adam came close to my ear.
"It's not worth it, May Bell."
That nickname snapped me out of my rage and brought me back to the present. "Where did you hear that name?"
"I used to call you it when we were little. I couldn't pronounce Marybelle, so May Belle became your name."
I stared at him in disbelief but something inside me told me that I should believe him. I could feel little pieces of me floating around just out of reach and no matter how much I wanted to put them together, I just couldn't reach. The small wolf from my dreams came back into my mind, pleading at me with his eyes. I still didn't know for sure who he was, but something inside me really wanted to know him again.
"Take me where we need to go."
