You never usually dated much, even before Emmy was born. You hated going through the 'get to know you phase' and the awkward first dates, followed by the even more awkward second date, then the dreaded third date. The date which most guys assume means sex.
But from the second you met Brian, you found that perhaps the reason why you never truly liked dating, or even romance in general, was because you just weren't dating the right guys.
Brian was everything you could have ever wanted in a man. You couldn't believe how a guy like him was still single. How a guy like him, one who was so incredibly cute and had a smile that lit up whatever room he was in, could have trouble when it came to dating.
You had heard all about his past experiences with dating and at first you thought he was kidding when he told you he'd been stood up for a second date with the woman he met before you. You had no idea how someone could stand up a guy as sweet and kind-hearted as him, but at the same time, you were glad he didn't have much luck in the dating department, because that meant you might never have gotten the chance to show him just how wrong all those other girls had been.
Tonight was your third date with Brian. Your third utterly incredible date, on which you'd been treated with so much care and respect that you half expected him to disappear at the end of the night and be nothing but a dream he was so perfect.
However, there was one thing you were worried about. One thing you hadn't quite told him yet as you didn't want to scare him off. But now that things were moving along a little more, and you could see yourself being with him, you knew you had to tell him.
"Y/N, is everything okay? You seem a little nervous." Brian's concerned voice pulled you from your thoughts as the two of you edged closer to your apartment, walking arm in arm down the dimly lit street.
"I'm fine... I just..." You breathed out as you came to a stop in front of your building. You slid your arm from his, stepping in front of him as your eyes fell to the ground. Your mind began to wonder about whether or not you should tell him you have a one year old daughter waiting for you upstairs. You almost decided not to, but you knew you had to tell him. A guy like him deserved to know the truth. "There's something I need to tell you."
"Oh boy." Brian chuckled nervously, his eyes glancing briefly to the ground, which seemed to be more interesting to you than he was given how you hadn't looked up from it since you came to a stop.
"No, it's-it's not like that." You assured him, finally mustering the courage to look up at his handsome face. You found it hard not to lose track and simply get lost in his eyes, the ones that shone so brightly under the moonlight. You knew you needed to tell him, but you just didn't know how.
"Y/N, whatever it is... You can tell me." Brian said softly, taking your hand in his as he sensed that you were more than just nervous. You were worried.
You smiled at him, a smile that had his stomach flutter furiously despite how quickly it seemed to fall from your face after it had formed. Your eyes shifted across your surroundings as you began to gather the courage you needed to tell him the truth.
The two of you hadn't even kissed yet and you were about to tell him you had a daughter. One you really wanted him to meet as you already found yourself falling for him. But whether or not dating a woman with a baby was something he'd like, you had no idea, which is why you were praying that this wasn't all about to be a big mistake.
"I, uh... I have a baby." You whispered, your voice cracking terribly as your gaze fell from his again. You didn't want to see what kind of face he might have pulled when hearing that. Better he just let you down with his words rather than get your heart broken when he looked at you with disgust, like most men usually did when you told them about Emmy.
"A baby?" Brian repeated, swallowing gently as he watched you nod your head in response. He would have never even thought that that would be what you had to tell him. He half expected for you to break things off with him despite how great the two of you seemed to get along.
And it appeared as though you thought the same about him given the way you were anxiously awaiting his response. Brian guessed you didn't have much luck when it came to telling guys you had a baby, but it just so happened that tonight would be the night your luck changed, as that little fact didn't bother him one bit.
"How old?" He asked curiously, watching as you looked up at him with semi-furrowed brows, as though you half expected him to have simply walked away.
"She's one. Her name is Emmy." You replied, the corners of your lips rising a small bit over the memory that played in your head of Emmy's first birthday.
"Emmy." Brian repeated softly, his eyes matching his tone as they stared deeply into yours. "Is she upstairs?" He questioned, glancing up towards your building with a slight cock of his head.
"Mm-hm." You hummed, nodding your head as you fiddled anxiously with your fingers. "Would you like to meet her?" You asked, the fact that Brian hadn't run off yet sparking hope in your chest that maybe this time would be different.
"I'd love to." He smiled, wide enough that he got those cute little creases by his eyes and the even cuter dimples on his cheeks. The ones you'd been drawn to the second you saw him behind the bar at Molly's on your very first night out since Emmy was born. And to think you'd almost cancelled on your friend that night.
You held out your hand, waiting patiently for him to take it and after a second of internal deliberation about whether he was ready to meet the most important person in your life, he slipped his hand into yours and allowed you to lead him upstairs.
Brian never expected anything from you after this date. He never expected sex, never even expected a kiss yet as he could tell you weren't quite ready, so it's safe to say he was rather surprised to find himself waiting inside your apartment as you bid your babysitter a goodnight. Obviously he still didn't expect anything by being here, but it was nice to take that little extra step.
"Sorry about the mess." You said, a touch embarrassed as you moved further into the apartment and started gathering up some clothes and blankets that lay sprawled about the place. If you'd know you'd be bringing Brian home tonight you'd have tidied up a little.
"Don't worry about it. You should see my apartment... I live with a giant man baby so you can imagine how the place must look." Brian joked, feeling a warmth in his chest when you laughed, something you often did when he joked around, which only made him that much more smitten with you.
"The laundry machines in this building are pieces of crap and it's too much hassle dragging Emmy to the laundromat with me so I've been neglecting doing laundry for a little while." You said quietly, the tips of your ears reddening a little as you bent down to pick up a discarded bra that Emmy had pulled from the laundry basket. She always was getting up to so much mischief now that she was crawling.
You tucked the bra away underneath some t-shirts before straightening, smoothing down your dress as your eyes landed back on Brian's, which hadn't left you since the minute you both stepped foot into the apartment.
"You have a nice place." Brian said, clearing his throat a little as he tried to lower the slight awkwardness between the two of you. The only awkwardness there'd ever been as even on your first date the two of you seemed to click so well.
"Oh, thank you." You replied, smiling briefly as you walked slowly towards the kitchen. "I've been meaning to move out and find a proper house for when Emmy's older but money is tight these days."
"I get it." Brian nodded, leaning his elbows against the breakfast bar as he watched you flusteredly try and tidy up the kitchen a little. He smiled softly as you began to hide dirty dishes underneath some bigger pots, clearly embarrassed as he could see the redness on your cheeks, even below your make-up.
Rounding the breakfast bar, Brian quickly took hold of your hands before you could start doing anything else. You took a breath, turning to face him properly before he slowly brought one hand up towards your face, gently cupping your cheek which made all the tension leave your body immediately. Maybe you'd been a little frantic in trying to tidy the place up. But you couldn't help it... You really liked him.
"You don't have to do all that." He said softly, shaking his head as he gestured to the kitchen around him.
"Sorry." You smiled sheepishly, glancing briefly down at the ground before back up at him. "I guess I'm just nervous."
"About me meeting Emmy?" Brian questioned, his thumb absently tracing light circles against your skin.
"That and just... This is our third date and most guys expect... something..." You exhaled, not wanting to actually say sex as you were afraid you would offend him by insinuating that that's all he wanted from you. "...and I just- I'm not really ready for that just yet."
"Y/N, I don't expect anything from you." Brian told you with a slight shake of his head. "I never did. Honestly I was just surprised you wanted a third date as well... You know how things have gone for me in the past." He added with a small chuckle, watching as you pressed your lips together a little out of pity, which you couldn't help but feel.
"I like you, Y/N. I like you a lot..." Brain continued, lacing his fingers with yours as you smiled sweetly enough that his heart did a somersault in his chest. "And I know you were worried about telling me you had a baby, but you don't have to be... It's not going to make me run away. I promise you that."
"You have no idea how glad I am to hear that." You replied through a deep breath you didn't know you'd been holding. You could feel the relief wash over you as the one singular weight that had been sitting atop your shoulders lifted, finally allowing you breath. "I was really worried but that's only because... I really like you too."
You took a breath, a rather deep breath before you leaned up just a little as you were a touch shorter than Brian, and placed a soft, yet sweet, kiss against his lips. It was safe to say that Brian was pleasantly surprised to feel your lips on his so soon, but it didn't take him long to start kissing you back.
You quickly felt Brian's hand leave yours as it landed on your waist, where it sat gently until you stepped forward, closing the gap between your bodies. You could feel him smile briefly against your lips as his other hand moved from your face to thread through your hair, cradling the back of your head as he deepened the kiss of which both of you never wanted to end.
The kiss might never have ended, the two of you might have simply passed out from lack of oxygen had Emmy not started crying in her room. You pulled reluctantly back, wiping the corner of your mouth with your finger tip and feeling the slight burn from his moustache on your upper lip.
"I should check on her." You whispered, rather breathlessly as your eyes met Brian's again after they'd glanced briefly towards the direction of Emmy's cries.
"Of course." He nodded, stepping aside to allow you to walk past him.
"I don't have any beer in the house but there's some soda in the fridge if you're thirsty." You said softly as you left the kitchen, rounding the breakfast bar and making sure you didn't trip over Emmy's toys on your way to her room.
You looked back over your shoulder before you disappeared into the nursery, leaving Brian alone in the kitchen to wait for you. He stood awkwardly, unsure what to do whilst he waited for you. His eyes gazed over your slightly messy apartment, yet still tidier than his and Cruz's was, that's for sure, until they landed on a bookcase in the far corner.
Brian could see a bunch of framed photos sitting atop the dark oak bookcase and so, allowing curiosity to get the better of him, he found himself moving slowly towards it. He wasn't surprised to see that the majority of photos were of Emmy, or at least a baby he assumed was Emmy as he didn't think you'd have framed photos of someone else's baby in your apartment.
He reached out, picking up a smaller black frame and bringing it closer to him. The photo was clearly taken when Emmy was born given the hospital gown you sported and the fact that Emmy was so incredibly tiny all bundled up in your arms. He couldn't help but smile at the way you looked at her, with so much love and affection in your eyes that it was clear Emmy was so important to you. So loved and so cherished that he almost felt special in getting to meet her.
Was it strange that he was really hoping Emmy would like him? I mean, she was just a baby after all and was incapable of forming proper opinions yet but the last thing he wanted was for her to cry around him as that might only end up making you second guess your decision to be with him.
"I went through twelve hours of labour before that photo was taken." Your voice told him, breaking him from his thoughts and making him jump a little.
Brian set the photo back down before he turned fully to look at you, his eyes softening immensely as he met the bright, innocent eyes of Emmy. Those of which were exactly the same colour as yours.
"I imagine that was hard." Brian replied, taking a careful step forward as he didn't want to come off too strong for Emmy, who was still staring at him as though she was trying to decide whether she wanted to cry or not.
"It was." You nodded, hoisting Emmy a little further in your arms as she often liked to kick her legs which meant she usually slipped from your grasp. You gazed down at her with nothing but love in your eyes. "But it was worth it."
"She's beautiful." Brian whispered, noting the smile that rose on your face as Emmy raised her arm, holding her tiny hand out towards Brian. He chuckled softly as he raised his own hand, allowing her to tightly grasp his index finger and give it a few shakes.
"She likes you." You smiled, the gentle giggles of Emmy as she shook Brian's finger warming your heart more than anything ever had. You were so pleased that she hadn't cried around him, like she did around your friends.
"Oh, I'm very likeable." Brian joked, making you laugh a little before you spoke.
"You'll get no arguments from me there." This time it was Brian's turn to blush, his face now a faded scarlet colour as he so obviously avoided eye contact with you. You loved how flustered he got around you sometimes. It was just another reason you liked him. "Do you want to hold her?"
"Are you sure?" Brian asked, sincerely enough that it made you all the more sure.
"I'm sure." You nodded, making him smile softly to himself. "I trust you, Brian."
"Then I'd love to hold her." He whispered out, holding his hands out as you passed Emmy to him. Your hold lingered for a second until you knew he was ready for you to let go, and once you did, the way Emmy buried her head into the nape of his neck and grabbed his shirt tightly told you everything you needed to know about your future with Brian.
"I'm taking her to the zoo tomorrow, for the first time... If you'd like to join us?" You asked hopefully, causing him to look back up at you with that heartwarming smile of his present on his still scarlet face.
"You're sure you want me there? I-I wouldn't want to impose on her first trip."
"I'm sure." You nodded, stepping closer to him so that you could place your hand on his arm, feeling the hardness of his bicep beneath his shirt sleeve. You shifted to his side, leaning your head against his shoulder as your hand moved to brush alongside Emmy's head as she yawned.
You smiled as you watched her rub her sleepy face against Brian's chest, her eyelids drooping as she succumbed to her tiredness. She never fell asleep that quickly for you when you held her, half the time it took you gently bouncing her up and down until your own arms fell asleep for her to go down for the night.
"Besides, with how quickly she just fell asleep against you..." You whispered, feeling as Brian lowered his head to glance down at the sleeping baby in his arms. "You may just find yourself joining us a hell of a lot more."
