Setsuno's Challenge
"It'll take a little bit for the soup to be finished" Setsuno said, "How about I make some Garlic Bird Oyakodon?"
"Really?! Go right ahead, Granny Setsu!"Toriko Exclaimed.
"Yeah, it's been a while so why not?" Kimiko smiled.
Setsuno hummed and then took out a whole chicken and then quickly cut it into pieces and grilled it, and then quickly slicing the onions and then started to saute the onions with seasonings.
"Okay, why don't we drink some water while we wait, Kimiko?" Toriko said as he poured her a glass of water.
"Thank you, very much" she said and then took a drink and gasped, "Ah! Air Aqua from Aqua Mountain, so light yet refreshing!"
"It sure is" Toriko said, "Not to mention her Full Course is made with the food that's in Knocking Master Jirou's menu."
"A simple person would not think that they are eating history." Kimiko said.
"Empoleon." Empoleon nodded.
"However, Supplying the ingredients for my Full Course is difficult"Setsuno said, "Stores don't carry most of my food so I request Jirou-chan to get it"
"The rice is finished!" Setsuno said and then took off the top of the rice cooker making Toriko and Kimiko gasp in excitement.
"That's Paradise Rice!" Kimiko said and then saw Setsuno put algae on top of it, "Seasoned Algae, and it's the top-class kind!"
She then looked back at Setsuno to see her crack an egg that had ten yolks in it into the pan
"The Ten Yellow Egg! Isn't this incredible...ah!" Kimiko said and then looked over at Toriko to see that a waterfall of drool was coming out of his mouth
"Toriko-san you're drooling too much!" Kimiko exclaimed, shutting his mouth.
"All right." Setsuno said and then took the bowls of rice and put the eggs and chicken she was cooking onto the rice, "Here you go Garlic Bird Oyakodon!"
"Idtadakimasu!" Kimiko and Toriko said and then started to dig in
'Ah! Delicious!' Kimiko thought as she took her first bite.
Empoleon hummed in bliss as well.
"Granny Setsu! Seconds, please!" Toriko said holding an empty bowl
"Don't inhale it!" Kimiko exclaimed
"Savor it more! But anyway I think I smell a hint of Sesame Chestnut in it."
Setsuno looked at Kimiko, "I see you haven't lost your touch. Even as a child you picked out feint ingredients. I added a tiny bit of crushed Sesame Chestnut in my soup stock." Setsuno smiled.
"Thanks Granny!"
Setsuno then looked at her boiling pot, "it's done"
"Huh?" Kimiko said
"It's ready, my special menu, Century Soup" Setsuno said making Kimiko and Toriko stand up as she started to remove the lid
"This is" Toriko said as steam started to pour out of the pot.
He halted as she saw that there was nothing in the pot "um, it's empty Granny."
Kimiko laughed and then looked at the pot, "I dont blame you. The soup has a level of transparency so high that you can't even see it. But you can smell it, can't you?"
Toriko closed his eyes as he sniffed the soup, and then opened them in shock, "All of those ingredients I smell are condensed into the soup stock, I cant even process all of them!"
Kimiko turned her head towards the door as she heard a crowd of people outside causing a commotion. "You did it again Granny." She giggled.
"Quite a commotion they're causing, but you can't blame them it's the legendary soup after all" Setsuno said and then took a bowl and started to ladle the soup into the bowl, "now here you go, enjoy!"
"Idtadakimasu" Kimiko and Toriko said
"What a clear soup" Toriko said as he took a spoon and scooped up some of the soup and drank it making him speechless. "Magnificent."
"How's the soup?" Setsuno asked.
"Even though there are so many ingredients in it, it isn't heavy at all. How about Kimi?!" Toriko looked over at Kimiko who was just staring at her soup.
"What's the matter Kimi?" Toriko said, he still didn't get a response, "Hello?Kimiko!"
"Oh, sorry. I got immersed in the flavor." Kimiko laughed along with Empoleon.
"So what'd you think about the soup?" He asked
"It was delicious. Like the last time I was here, but even better!" Kimiko looked at Setsuno, "Granny thank you for such a wonderful soup!"
"I'm glad to hear it." Setsuno said
"Though was Silk Bird Remnants and Motor Onion in there?" She asked
'What? After her first taste she was able to guess two of the ingredients!' Setsuno thought
"Oh there were Mineral Coconuts in it too?" Toriko said
"Oh yeah, gave it a hint of sweetness," Kimiko said, "just what'd I expect from you..........
Although, for some reason, I feel like something's missing." Setsuno perked up as she heard Kimiko say that.
"You mean with the ingredients?" Toriko asked
"Maybe a missing ingredient, but I'm not sure which one." Kimiko said as she looked at her soup.
"Em?"
Setsuno smiled as she looked at the two.
"Kimiko, Toriko, would you like to see the kitchen" she asked
"What?!" Kimiko and Toriko yelled
"The kitchen?!" Toriko said
"Your kitchen is in a different place?!" Kimiko asked
"This way." Setsuno said as she started to walk towards a door on the ground.
"Oh, Granny Setsu" Toriko said, "can I eat the rest of this soup?" he drooled
"Toriko..." Kimiko sighed as she pinched his ear.
"Aie."
"Hurry up!" Setsuno said and then walked over to a latch on the ground and opened it to let them see a staircase going down
"The kitchen you saw up there is used for final touches, but this is where I do my prep work." Setsuno then turned on the light switches letting them see a large space filled with island kitchens with ingredients on them.
"Amazing!" Kimiko exclaimed
"Who would have thought that such a big space would be down here." Toriko said
"This is where you so your prep work!" Kimiko said
"As you know Kimiko, the quality of the cooking mostly depends on the preparation." Setsuno said as she started to walk ahead making Toriko and Kimiko follow.
" The kitchen is underground so customers don't see it, but it's the backbone of the restaurant." Setsuno looked at the two, "Normally only my staff are allowed."
"Thank you so much Granny." Kimiko was then cut off by a large monkey banging on the glass wall.
"Whoa! A Spa Monkey!" She said amazed.
'It's Cold!' She heard a voice.
"Hey Granny, I think something is wrong with the boiler here." She said.
"It's soaked in hot water with Yuki and preserved at exactly 42 degrees, creating the ultimate refreshing japanese style soup stock" Toriko said, then a beeping noise was heard. Setsuno looked at the thermometer that was right next to her.
"The heat retaining mechanism isn't working right." she said as she saw that the temperature has dropped 20 degrees.
"Maybe I can help. Come out, Rotom!"
A small, orange Pokémon that has a body of plasma. It is mostly spherical, with a bulb below its body and a long pointed protrusion on top, making it shaped like a lightning rod. There is a whitish blue aura of electricity around it that forms lightning bolt-shaped appendages. When moving quickly, these appendages tend to disappear, in favor of a long similar-looking trail of blue electricity. It has teeth, and its unique, blue eyes have a dividing line across them.
"What's that critter?" Toriko asked.
"Rotom, can you find the problem?"
It nodded and zipped off as Toriko took out the dex.
'Rotom the Plasma Beast. An Electric/Ghost type, Capture Level: Unknown.
Rotom have the ability to enter and control appliances. They typically use their abilities to make mischief, often using the household items they possess to pull pranks on unsuspecting people. Despite this, some Rotom have taken to inhabiting electronics with the intent of helping others. The Rotom Pokédex, Rotom Phones, Rotomi, and Drone Rotom are some examples. Additionally, the Rotom Phone is used to power the Rotom Bike. Some of these forms allow Rotom to speak human languages, and demonstrate that they are highly intelligent. Rotom tend to reside in abandoned buildings. Research continues on Rotom and its ability to power unique motors.'
"Whoa! Amazing!"
"Buddy, can you find the problem with the boiler?"
With a few beeps, Rotom zipped and after a while, he returned and beeped again.
"Ah good." Then she sees the Spa Monkey looking relaxed as the water warmed up again.
"Rotom was able to find the problem. It's burner that went down. He gave it a temp fix, but it'll need to be replaced soon." Kimiko said.
"Thank you Kimiko."
Kimiko sighed and then followed Setsuno around the kitchen, "These are all incredible ingredients." she then saw some pink potatoes that were soaking in water. "Peach Potatoes. They say the skin is so slippery that it takes as much time to peel one Peach Potato as it does one taro potato. Then you have to put them in salt water kept at 4 degree Celsius for one year after it's been peeled to get the slime off. Even a degree change by 0.1 degree Celsius or a slight fluctuation in the salt content of the water will ruin the flavor." She then saw a bunch of chopped scallions in a basket. "And that's Gori Scallion! Their cut ends have an adhesive effect, so if you don't cut hundreds of them, they won't come apart. It is not only a matter of strong slicing, but precision as the cuts must be made in the exact same spot. Otherwise, the injured fibers become bitter and the food is no longer fit for consumption."
Setsuno then grabbed a long rope that was hanging from the ceiling and yelled as she swung herself across the room to the other side which had a balcony, "Come over here, hurry!"
"Is there any point to crossing like that"Kimiko sighed as Toriko gave a Tarzan yell as he swung to the other side.
Kimiko blinked then sighed.
"Empoleon?" Kimiko asked.
Her partner nodded and................
Instead they jumped across and landed surprising Toriko.
"Wha?! OK, I've seen you scare off beasts and take a hit on a Robot like it was nothing. Now this! You sure you're an average chef?" Toriko asked.
"Somewhat. It's normal for my folks anyway. I'm actually from a long line of powerhouses on my dad's side............and they are amazing............................Especially grandma and grandpa." Kimiko said with a hint of melancholy and happiness as she laid a hand on her strawhat
"Kimi?" Toriko thought as it was the first he saw her a sad. Are her grandparents famous chefs or something?
"Okay we're here." Setsuno said looking at Toriko and Kimiko. Toriko, Empoleon and Kimiko gasped as they looked at the gigantic pot that was before them that about the size of a large building
"I've never seen such a big pot!" Kimiko marveled and then saw Setsuno jump onto the top of the pot.
"Come on, Kimi!" Toriko shouted as he started to climb the ladder
"Wait for me!" Kimiko shouted.
After climbing...
"Wow! This is the century soup with the ingredients still in it!" Kimiko said as she looked at the large ingredients that were in the pot
"I'm surprised, the stock is still so transparent even before it's strained!" Toriko said.
"That's because it has the lye boiled out of it co to oust for half a year. But to be honest, the soup is still incomplete" she said.
"Eh? You mean a certain ingredient is missing from it?" Kimiko asked but Toriko was not listening.
"There's Motor Onion in here, too. What a lineup. This is awesome, Granny Setsu!" Toriko exclaimed for Empoleon to hit him in the head.
"What do you mean?" Kimiko asked
"Century Soup is a food that originally comes from the natural world." Setsuno said as she stirred the pot
"Really!?" Kimiko exclaimed
"That's the first I'm hearing of it." Toriko commented
"A long time ago, Jirou-chan fetched some for me. Just that one mouthful was so delicious I could never forget it. This is the soup I made trying to imitate that. But even after all this time, I could never figure out that missing ingredient that put it all together." Setsuno explained
"Well, I just said that impulsively. I mean, I've never taste the real thing or anything" Kimiko said
"Why do you think I brought you two to this kitchen?" Setsuno said getting the twos attention, "Of any country's presidents, wealthy people and gourmets not one of them has given an opinion on my cooking. I've been charmed by your sense of taste and sensitivity. I thought that if it's you two, it might be possible to make this soup complete. I brought you here to show you what the components of the soup stock were in detail."
"But, I...Someone like me can't complete that." Kimiko said making Setsuno gently laugh.
"Wouldn't you like to try it? The real Century Soup?" Setsuno said
"I want to try it!" Toriko exclaimed
"Is that right, Toriko?" Setsuno said
"Hey, Kimi? You wanna try the real soup, right?" Toriko said as he looked at her.
Kimiko gave a thoughtful look and then smiled, "Yeah! I would love to!"
"Empoleon!" Empoleon agreed.
"The time couldn't be better either. The Century Soup only appears once every hundred years. That's why it's called Century Soup. Right now there's someone in town who knows about that information in detail, and Bishokuya are gathering from all over, wanting to get their hands on the soup." Setsuno explained, "I'm sure you'd get hired in a heartbeat, Toriko. Take Kimiko and go! Taste the real soup, and make a magnificent Century Soup with those hands!"
"Yeah!" Kimiko said while smiling with Toriko.
------------
Then they arrived at Bar Heavy Lodge.
"This is the place alright." Toriko said as they went inside.
As Toriko appeared the bar went silent then.....
"What's Sup?!" Toriko yelled.
"Toriko?!"
"The real one!"
"It's Toriko!"
"Toriko's here!" everyone in the bar cheered, making Kimiko giggle
"Looks like the charismatic king is in the house!" the bartender yelled.
He was a muscular man wearing a brown shirt, who had a receding hairline and was sporting a unibrow and a moustache.
"Sure takes me back. The ol Heavy Lodge. Busy as always" Toriko said as he walked towards the bar.
"Yo, Moriji. I haven't heard from you in awhile" Toriko said as he took a seat at the bar. The man then placed a gigantic glass of beer in front of him
"Drink up Toriko. It's Enamel Beer" he said, "It's been awhile since I last saw you. Thought you got eaten."
"Yeah, I've been getting requests more often, so I haven't had time to drop by" Toriko said and then drank the beer, and then placed it back on the counter, "Another one!"
"You finished it already!" the man exclaimed.
Kimiko and Empoleon giggled.
"So how're the recent Bishokuya?" Toriko asked as the bartender put down another glass of beer
"Heh. They're all milktoads. I barely see anybody with the qualities that the Four Kings have." he said
"Well it's your judgement, Moriji, it can't be wrong," Toriko said
"Judgement?" Kimiko asked "Does he work as an in-between for Bishokuya and the clients?"
"Empole?"
"Yeah" Toriko said, "He's got discerning eyes that can see through to a person's true power and talent, and he refers us Bishokuya."
"Toriko. I can see your level has drastically risen again." Moriji said
"You can tell?" Toriko said as he took a sip of beer
"By the way, a lot the customers today seem to be pretty good. You've got the same goal as them, right?"
"Yeah", I came to take a request, from the guys on the other side of that door." Toriko said
"Huh?" Kimiko said and looked to the door to see a red carpet was rolled out and men in suits were running in and lining up.
"Everyone. Stop your meals! Presenting the chairman of the 'Gourdarake Public Company,' Mr. Colonel Mokkoi" the man yelled
"That's..." Kimiko said as she saw the old man walk in. 'I remember him. He tried to ask my dad for a buisness arrangement. But got turned down...'
Empoleon frowned.
"So he's the client?" Kimiko mumbled.
"I'll give you 10 billion yen. To anyone who fulfills my request." the man said, "Come to the harbor tomorrow. I won't refuse anyone who arrives."
"Are you serious!" a bishokuya said
"Who do you think I am!" the man exclaimed, "The Century Soup! Those that are up for the challenge, come with me" he then turned around and left while talking to his bodyguards that were following him.
'He's obviously up to something. If he's interested in the Century Soup...something's not right here...'
Kimiko thought.
"You better be careful, Toriko." Moriji said as he cleaned a glass.
"Hey" Kimiko said getting their attention, "Do you think it's okay for me to go with him?"
"Hm?" Moriji then inspected her, "Are you a Bishokuya?"
"Oh, ham no, my apologies" Kimiko bowed, "I'm a chef, my name is Kimiko."
"Oh, I see." Moriji said and thought as he looked at the woman.
'Hm, she is different from other Chefs I've seen. For some reason, it feels like she's holding back her power.'
"It's weird, all these years, looking at people heading out on journeys, there have been people I wanted to stop no matter what. And then there are people like you, that I want to push forward. Go ahead and go."
Kimiko brightened and gave a bright smile, "Yes sir! I'll do my best!"
Toriko blushed as he looked at Kimiko making Moriji smirk.
"She your girlfriend, Toriko?" Moriji whispered to Toriko, making him jump
"No! It's not like that!" Toriko exclaimed
"Is something wrong?" Kimiko asked
"Nothing! It's just" Toriko said, "I bet that you're relieved that you could go"
"Yeah!" Kimiko exclaimed making him smile.
Empoleon shook his head at this.
---------------
That night, Kimiko and Toriko rented a hotel for the night and Kimiko let her sous chef know that it'll be a while before she comes back.
'I still can't believe it. The Century Soup. If we get it, I'm should invite my family to have some! They'll love it! Oh, maybe my old classmates too!' Kimiko thought as she smiled.
She laid across her bed as Empoleon settled for the big couch.
Toriko was ready to sleep as he saw Kimiko already snoozing away.
'I know Kimi is hiding something, but if it was bad, Terry would've known. Kimi. You would have to tell me sooner or later."
