Chapter 18: A Roze By Any Other Name

We walk out of the forest and back into the pack. Two warriors carry Alex's lifeless body and take him away to be prepped for burial. A crowd forms. Mother's hold their children, their eyes wide with horror as they watch their Alpha's body be taken away. Once again, The Pack of To Dásos loses both their Alphas in one fell swoop.

"Could this have been prevented..?" I ask. "Could we have saved him..?"

Jason looks down, lost in his own thoughts.

"He made you Alpha..."

"God I know!" Jason exclaims.

"Can he do that?"

"An Alpha's final demand giving with his dying breath is law." The beta walks up to us.

"I've never heard of this rule." I state.

"That's because Alpha's don't survive their wounds long enough to make a final decree." He says. "Assassins aim to kill an Alpha in one blow."

"Jason, you are going to have to announce to your pack and to the other packs that you are now Alpha and that Alexander is... gone..." I say.

"The best time to announce new information will be tonight." He says.

"Tonight?" I question. "Why tonight?"

"Once a year we have a black-tie gala. It's to make sure that the other packs know that just because we are small doesn't mean we should be forgotten." The beta began. "It's tonight. Many Alpha's from many packs attend. We discuss issues while we mingle and have fun... for once."

"Is now an appropriate time to party?" I ask. "This pack just lost both their Alphas."

"To cancel the event would leave many Alphas angry. That is something we don't want, not now. Let the people have fun... even if it's just one night." The beta responds.

The beta sighs and walks away. He agreed with Alex's final words, how Jason should now be made Alpha even though the position was his first. He respected him, and now that man he respected is gone. Even though I didn't pull back the bow and lodge the arrow in his chest, I can't help but feel that it is my fault that Alex is dead...

The crowd was long gone as many began preparing for that gala. A few were too busy grieving to care about the party. Who could blame them...

"Jason, what are you doing?" I ask as he begins to walk away. My eyes follow his movements as concern fills my body.

"I can't be here right now, Dalia. Not now..." He says.

"So what? You're going to abandon them?" I ask.

He turns to look at me with anger in his eyes, "I don't abandon my own! I just can't be here right now!"

"Jason!" I yell. "One minute you're kissing me! The next, you're breaking down and now you're calm and you say you just 'can't be here right now'?! Pick an emotion!"

"Who the hell do you think you are yelling at me, anyway..." He growls as he turns to leave.

"Alexander chose you over his own beta to step up to the plate! He picked you to lead them, but instead you're leaving them like a coward when they need you the most!" I shout.

"You've done the exact same thing, Dalia!" He shouts back. "You left your pack! You left them, because your mate didn't love you or for whatever reason! You abandoned them in the end!"

I stare at him awestruck, unable to argue back.

"You didn't resolve the conflict, you fled!" He continues. "Who's the coward now?"

We stand there glaring at each other and breathing heavily. We didn't even notice when two warriors came up to us, clearly uncomfortable by all the tension.

"Alp- uh Jason?" One of warriors began.

Jason groans in annoyance as he breaks eye contact and turns his attention towards the warrior.

"What could it possibly be now?" He asks.

"We found someone in the forest that could possibly be Alpha Alexander's assassin."

I turn my attention to them when the bring forward a blonde girl in handcuffs. I gasp when I recognize her.

Roze.

"Let go of me you brainless drone!" She shouts as she struggles against the bond. "I didn't kill anyone I just got here!"

"Stop!" I shout "She's not the assassin!"

"How would you know?" One of the warriors question.

"I saw the assassin." I say.

"Then why didn't you capture them?"

Before I could respond, a loud growl cause us to cease our arguments. The source was from Jason who appears much more angry than our first argument.

"Let her out of her chains." He demanded.

"But--"

"Let her go and get out of my sight!"

They quickly took off her cuffs and scurry away from Jason's wraith. Roze rubs her wrists as she eyes Jason with caution. Jason closes his eyes and exhales. He takes a few steps towards her then stops and looks at me.

"How do you know her?" Jason asks me.

"I never said I knew her." I respond.

"You protected her with out hesitation. I also know for a fact that you couldn't see the assassin. They were too well hidden among the trees." He says. "How do you know her, Dalia?"

Roze whimpers, taking her eyes off Jason. "Delilah, I am confused and scared. What the hell is going on? They said their Alpha was killed?"

"Delilah?" Jason was now confused as well.

My world is crumbling around me.

"I need to explain things..."

"Yeah, you do!" They both say.

I stare at them both until it clicks in my mind. I chuckle a bit as they look at me with confusion.

"Are you guys going to start talk in unison now that you two will be becoming a thing?" I ask.

Jason stares at me with wide eyes, clearly expecting me to be oblivious to what was going on. He opens his mouth to say something bit I cut him off.

"Jason, between everything that has happened and everything that will happen, you deserve some type of happiness along the way." I say. "You deserve her."

Jason bits his bottom lip as he ponders for a moment. He then turns to face Roze who is blushing like mad.

"What's your name?" He calmly asks.

He chuckles nervously and twirls a strand of her blonde hair, "R-Roze. My name is Roze. Spelled with a 'Z' not an 'S', but I love it."

Jason gives a small laugh. "Any other name would be just as sweet."

And for the first time since I came here, he doesn't frown or scowl or even shoot off a single glare. For the first time- for what I believe has been quite a long time...

He smiles...
