Chapter Fifteen
Jenny runs downstairs to grab some more snacks. The happy smile on her face never falters when she leaves the room and it brings me joy to see my best friend so happy. But as I turn to look at Micah, I can see the dilemma in her eyes. It makes my heart ache to see such a down to earth person worry about something so serious.
"Why'd you agree?" I ask her, reaching out and touching her shoulder to get her attention. "You look like you very much don't want to play, so just why?"
Micah looks up at me, removing her eyes from the black, braided bracelet her mom had gotten her for her tenth birthday. She always wears it, though unnoticeable, it's one of her signatures. Micah reaching up and pushes her hair out of her face.
She shrugs, a smile slowly forming on her face. "Jenny wants answers. This is the way she'll get them, so I'll give them to her."
I furrow my eyebrows and mule over her words. So it wasn't only me who had noticed how mischievous Jenny had been. Micah had picked up on it too and it seems she took it upon herself to entertain Jenny's game.
Before I can say anything else, the door is pushed open more and Jenny walks in. Her arms ar full of goodies that I can only assume she bought earlier in the week for this. There's no way Angela would allow that many snacks in the house. At least not on a daily basis. Jenny drops the food onto the bed, the stuff falling into a plop. A bag of chips lands next to my leg and I pick it up to examine the type. Doritos, of course.
"Alright, let's play." Jenny hops onto the bed. Her knee lands on one of the bags and a pop is heard. We're all silent for a moment before we start laughing. "My bad, guys. But for real, let's play."
Micah and I share a look. I'm petrified by the possible outcome of all this. I don't know what'll happen, but I can only hope that it'll all just be lighthearted.
"I'll go first," Jenny offers, a small smile on her face. She turns to me and her smile softens. "Emie, truth or dare?"
"Uh," I clear my throat, shifting uncomfortably. "Truth?"
Truth or dare. The ultimate party game from what I've seen on tv or read in books. It's everyone's favorite so if Jenny is looking for answers, I can see why she chose it. You can never win in this game. People think truth will save them, bu really, you're just opening yourself to a more vulnerable position. Who knows how many secrets of yours will be told. Dare do nothing but humiliate you. People always feel as if they have to prove something by completing them, but no. You have a voice, let it be heard. I can't help but feeling like a hypocrite though, because I'm participating in this game I have no interest in.
"Oh, yay." Jenny claps sarcastically, rolling her eyes. "Fine, when are you and Sebastian finally going to christen the bedroom?"
My cheeks grow red but that doesn't stop me from giving her a deadpan look. "I don't know, Jenny. But what I do know is that you're seeming more and more obsessed with Sebastian and I's relationship."
Jenny rolls her eyes once again, the smile not leaving from her face. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she got her smile from the movie Truth or Dare, when their faces would become distorted. Of course, I choose not to mention that.
I turn to Micah. "Truth or dare?"
Micah looks up at the ceiling. She licks her lips before looking back at me. "Dare." She gives me a half smile. I nod my head, trying to ruffle through my thoughts for a proper dare.
"Oh!" I reach over her to grabs an unopened can on coke. It's cold and condensation has started on the outside of it. "I dare you to chug this whole can of soda."
"What the hell, Emie?" Jenny scoffs, shaking her head. "What kind of dare is that? I thought you'd make her call a teacher or something and flirt or whatever. Even run outside naked."
My eyes widen in disbelief. It's so incredulous that she would honestly think that I would dare someone do do such stupid things. I could never ask someone to humiliate themselves. Not to mention that's public indecency which is illegal and you can and will go to jail for it. Or calling a teacher? Why would I have a teachers number? I find that to be extremely odd and ridiculous.
"What's gotten into you?" I ask her, crossing my arms to show her my unamusement. "You've been watching too many tv shows."
Before Jenny can retort, Micah cracks open the soda. She lifts it in the air with a small nod as if she's doing cheers with someone. "Bottoms up." Micah says before she tilts her head back with the can in her mouth. Jenny and i can see her throat contracting and expanding as she swallows.
I start cheering her on because she's doing great. Then all of a sudden she coughs in the middle and lifts her head back up. Whatever soda was in her mouth comes flying out at Jenny. A laugh leaves me loudly and I'm soon guffawing at the image of utter surprise on Jenny's face. Her eyes are wide and her mouth is agape.
"Micah!" Jenny shrieks before she gets up and leaves her room to go to the bathroom. I'm still laughing and rolling on the bed.
"Sorry!" Micah shouts before a loud belch leaves her. This only causes me to laugh even more.
I feel like it's been so long since I've genuinely been happy. Well, maybe just since I've laughed like this. It's unfair to say I'm unhappy because despite my boyfriend confessing he doesn't love me, I don't really have anything to complain about. There are people in worse situations.
Jenny comes back fuming. Her cheeks are slightly red from her anger and her lips are pursed. I suck my own lips into my mouth to stop my laughs. Meanwhile, Micah is still burping. She slams her right fist against her chest. I assume that her chest is burning rom the barbonation in the soda.
"I should've said truth." Micah, burps again. Her eyes water slightly and I can only assume that her nose had started burning with her burp. "Jenny, truth or dare."
"Truth." She answers aggressively, shaking her head. I want to tell her to stop being suck a sore loser about what happened. Though I know it's not fun getting sprayed with soda from someone's mouth, but it was an accident. I know that much. Micah wouldn't purposely spit in Jenny's face.
"Why did you really want to play this game?" Micah asks, a small cough leaving her. "Like, really?"
Jenny raises an eyebrow. She looks as if she doesn't know what Micah is talking about and it's a good ruse. But Jenny doesn't realize that I've known her basically her whole life so I know the signs. Like how her eyes move away from Micah for a split second before returning to her. It happens again and that's how I know that she feels compromised.
"What do you mean?" Jenny asks and she legitimately seems confused by the truth question. "I wanted to play a fun game with my friends. It's not like we go to parties to experience this, so you know, I just thought why not."
Micah rolls her eyes and shakes her head. She scoffs before shrugging. "Fine."
Jenny smiles, quickly dropping her confused act. She claps her hands before getting off of the bed. "My turn."
I'm nervous now. My heart is beating a mile a minute at what Jenny may possibly do.
"Truth or dare, Micah?"
Micah narrows her eyes. She straightens her back and tilts her head to the side. "Truth."
I hold my breath as Jenny laughs lightly. She seems kind of crazy right now. She's just looking for a secret that may not even be there.
Jenny crosses her hands in front of her. She grins and nods her head. Just as fast as she developed the smile, it's gone and she has a serious look on her face. "Is it true that you're a lesbian?"
I gasp audibly and my eyes shoot over to Micah. She's doing a lot better than I am because she's as cool as a cucumber. Either she really doesn't care or her facade is amazing.
"No." Micah simply answers.
It seems like that answer doesn't satisfy Jenny as she clenches her fists. She shakes her head and looks towards her window. A laugh leaves her that causes me to scoot away from hr. Jenny seems absolutely bonkers. I've never seen her like this before and it makes me think that something more is going on than this situation.
"That's a lie." Jenny says promptly, one eyebrow raised. She seems so sure of herself. "We all heard what Sebastian said that day. Clearly one of you are lying and honestly my money is on you."
"Jenny." My tone is warning, hoping to stop her from making a huge mistake with this. "Stop. Let it go, why does that matter to you."
A hand is placed on my shoulder and I look over to see it's Micah. When I had been talking to Jenny, she had gotten up off of the bed. Her beg is now sitting in her place. She's looking through it, her face blank, emotionless.
"Micah?" I'm the last to remove myself from the bed. In doing so, the purple comforter shifts to one side and hangs off.
"You know what," Micah zips hers bag. She breaks her composure, her eyebrows furrow and her lips downturn into a frown. "I knew there was something bout tonight. I just can't believe that I was so damn stupid to actually come here."
"Just answer the question," Jenny shrugs, the action unapologetic. "That's all you have to do. You're the one who made this into a big deal."
"Jenny! Cut it out. What is wrong with you?" I look over at her before turning back to Micah. "Micah, I don't know...you know she doesn't mean it."
Micah shakes her head at me. She grabs her bag and hoists the strap onto her shoulder. I watch her as she looks around the room and almost like a freight train, it hits me. She's hurt by Jenny's question and how much Jenny seems to care about it. Micah definitely has the right to be hurt, but I think on some sort of spectrum, she truly thought Jenny was somewhat her friend. This betrayal is hurting her deeply. If not then Micah wouldn't possibly care.
"Fuck you, Jenny." Micah snarls. "Jesus Christ. How could I not see it before. You're just a homophobic little girl who thinks she's better than everybody. So what? I'm part of the lgbt community, so what?"
Jenny's lips slowly curls in disgust. She takes a step back and rubs her arms. "I can't believe I invited you into my home, sat with you. You're fucking disgusting. I want you out of my house, right now!"
"No!" I shout, momentarily forgetting that her mom is downstairs working. "Jenny, shut up!"
"Gladly," Micah scoffs, turning on hr heel and leaving the room. I'm quick to go after her.
Micah's legs are longer than mine and though it's not a big height difference, it does help her get away faster. I nearly slip down the wooden stairs in my socks as I force myself to keep up with her. I grab onto the rail tightly and stop momentarily. Micah stops at the door to put her shoes on.
"Micah, please wait." I plead as I step off the stairs and go up to her. "Can we go back up and fix this? I don't even know why Jenny is acting like that."
"Yes, you do. Emie, your best friend has hated me since I moved here in middle school." Micah crosses her arms and puts most of her weight on one leg. "And clearly she hates certain sexualities, so no, we have nothing to talk about. I will not stand and pretend to be friends with someone who is so damn close minded."
Micah turns and unlocks the front door. She yanks it open but pauses for a moment. "Emie, you can have whatever friends you want. This one flaw doesn't define her, I mean, she's a bitch, but she's a good friend to you. I just...I can't be around her. I won't subject myself to any abuse regarding my sexual orientation because no one should be judged for that."
With that, Micah steps out of the house and slams the door behind her. I watch as my best friend leaves. Before I can go after her, I have to figure out just what the heck she was thinking. I turn and see Angela standing at the stairs. Her eyebrows are raised.
"I won't get into this. You guys are approaching young adulthood, but I will say that those two girls, Jenny and Micah, need to realize that they've got a great friend in you, Emie." Angela states before she starts walking away. "I'm so disappointed in my daughter. Micah deserved none of what she said and I hate to say that Jenny gets it from her father. That's no excuse though."
Angela leaves and I'm left to go fix this mess. We aren't even in halfway through the school year yet and this is where we are. I make my way up the stairs, just exhausted by everything that's been happening. When I go into Jenny's room, she's just sitting on her bed texting or whatever.
"Are you serious?" I stand before her. "You're texting right now? You just ran Micah out of your house with your bigotry."
Jenny looks up at me with a raised eyebrow. She locks her phone and sets it aside. "You really wanted that dyke to sleep next to us?"
I'm taken aback by the sheer audacity of Jenny. "You are serious. I cannot believe you. This is bullshit, Jenny! You have no right to disrespect Micah for what her preference in people are. You do not get to single out her because you don't like something. You should've kept your damn mouth shut and throw your opinions out of the door."
I shake my head and march over to her dresser that my bag is laid next to. I pick it is and shove in the clothes that were messily hanging out of it. Micah had the right idea to leave.
"You're not serious, Emie." Jenny says, disbelief coating her voice. "Over this, you're not gonna talk to me for what, a week?"
I laugh sarcastically and shake my head. "As of right now, Jenny Braxton, we are no longer friends. You need to first fix whatever is going on with you because this stems from something deeper than homophobia."
And just like that, my best friend is no longer in my life.
*Alright, this may be the longest chapter. Whew, who expected that? I mean, it was hinted, but yeah. So Jenny is a bit homophobic, or a lot homophobic. I hate that that happened, you know? I also wish I had a better timeline in this story. I guess I'll have some sort of time skip to something good. Halloween was supposed to have a place, but whatever. Anyways, do you think something deeper is happening with Jenny? Will Emie forgive her? Will she apologize to Micah? Let me know with a comment and please don't forget to vote. As always, thanks for reading.*
