Twenty-Five | Maddox & Claire & Wesley

As they all walked outside, Sir Stenhouse trying to keep up to stop them, Claire shoved the book into Maddox's hands and latched onto his back.

"Fly."

Maddox was taken aback by her sudden dominance but obliged. Wesley nodded to them and set off on foot quicker than the speed of lightning as Maddox stretched out his wings and ascended into the air, heading West.

A great pull of energy tugged at Claire. It was undeniable, the kind of energy that's beautiful, yet dangerous. Like that of a bolt of lightning. "That way," Claire demanded, pointing to Boynton Canyon. "To the canyon."

Landing on the top of the canyon, Maddox shuddered. His shoulders and hands went nearly numb as he stood on the top of the canyon, looking down at what very few pines and juniper trees were left.

Maddox's eyes grew wide as he watched those trees twist. "Claire?" He patted her arm continuously as she looked through "Myths, Legends, and the Truth In Between."

"Hold on," she sighed.

"No, look!" He pointed toward the trees. "Do you see what I see?"

Claire huffed as she looked up, only to allow her face to droop and her eyes to widen.

"They're... twisting?"

"Yeah. Do you feel... tingly?"

Claire rolled her shoulders back in an attempt to sit up straight, but she found her shoulders to be numb, all the way down to the tips of her fingers. Claire looked up at Maddox, her brow furrowed as Wesley made his way up the side of the canyon, meeting them at the top.

"Hey," he panted, resting his hands on his knees and looking up to the both of them. "Is it just me who went numb? I almost fell off the side of the canyon. I-I can't feel my arms. And I swear those trees are moving around over there." Wesley collapsed on the top of the canyon, out of breath from climbing.

Maddox and Claire looked back at one another, their eyes wide. Maddox pointed to the book with a rigid finger, but couldn't manage to make his mouth move to speak. Claire nodded as they both sat down on the old Boynton Canyon.

Claire flipped the book from page 394 all the way back to the beginning.

"Table of Contents," she whispered, running her finger down the edge of the brown page of the book in the "B" section. "Boynton Canyon, page 514."

Claire grabbed hold of the middle of the book, flipping it over to one side as she hunted for page 514. There's always an explanation, she thought to herself.

"Here we go," she turned the book so that Maddox could see as Wesley made his way over to them.

"Boynton Canyon is the site of a vortex in Sedona, Arizona. Unexplainable kinetic electricity is emitted at the canyon, among multiple other sites in Sedona. Upon going to this site, among others, visitors are said to feel a tingling sensation in their shoulders and arms. They go on spiritual journeys, which are said to bring peace into the visitor's life. However, scientists have tried to shut down such claims, saying that the energy emitted from the vortex is merely a state of mind and that spiritual journeys near such places are non-existent. A vortex of swirling energy in the canyon may or may not cause a spiritual journey, tingling, and twisting trees, but no one has been able to prove either claim."

"Okay," Claire drew out in a baffling mumble as she turned to the next page.

"The ancient Native American Yavapai people used to inhabit the Sedona area, and it is apparent that the force of the vortex was at work in their time as well. The Yavapai painted petroglyphs and lived near places that were believed to be vortices, leaving archaeologists and other scientists the 'proof' that the energy of their 'Great Mother' was very much functional and plausible."

"So, we're standing on top of a vortex?" Maddox scratched his head.

"Did you not read any of that? Yes, we're on top of a vortex!"

Wesley didn't say a word more, but lied on his back and began to laugh at the tingling sensation that he felt through his body. "This is insane."

Claire lifted her hands into the air and started to laugh as well. Maddox sat there, looking at both of them as if they were the two most peculiar beings in existence.

A gust of wind blew, flipping the pages of the book until the gust stopped, landing on page 692. Leaning forward as Claire and Wesley still laughed, Maddox saw a familiar name across the top of the page in a curly bold font.

"Zain Adara: Master of Light and Energy."

I'm not bothering with them right now. Maddox turned the book completely toward himself and read, hoping to see a glimpse of where Zain might be before it's too late to fight off the Underworld and all that it holds.

"Da-da-da-da-daa," Maddox whispered to himself as he skimmed over the small passage inside of the book. "Here we go."

"Zain Adara, after leaving his daughter Claire Adara at an orphanage, left Anaia Adara. He is said to inhabit places of high energy, though moving around constantly from place-to-place. He has reportedly been seen in the heart of Boynton Canyon, but no accusations have been confirmed. He is said to have powers such as damaging light (though such light can also be used to heal) and nuclear energy, though he delights in the kinetic electricity of the Earth."

"Oh my God," Maddox whispered to himself as he stood up, brushing the sand off of his pants and ripping the page out of the book.

Claire and Wesley stopped their laughing as they watched Maddox take flight to the other side of the canyon.

Maddox allowed his feathered white wings to carry him into the middle of the Canyon. He felt pinpricks all throughout his body, infiltrating his skin to bring him to a feeling of numbness.

He felt as if he were being torn from reality.

Landing on his feet among few pine trees, Maddox found himself unable to stand. He collapsed on the ground, and the tingling feeling became nothing as all fell to darkness.

A/N: Here's a fun fact. Boynton Canyon in Sedona is a real place, and there is an actual debate about whether or not a vortex of energy is located there, among other places in Sedona. You can actually take tours to go on "spiritual journies" through the Canyon and other vortex locations.
