Chapter 28: The Oak Tree

(Gary's POV)
I was falling fast towards the Ground, with not an easy way to slow me down. I closed my eyes and expected to just splat on the ground and meet up with my Father up in Heaven.

However, when I opened my eyes, some purple flying Pokemon that looked like a Galaxy was carrying me to the ground. It must've caught me as I was falling. It was gentle in it's movement while carrying me to the ground in which I saw its trainer.

"Way to go, Lunala. Are you ok Mr. Gary?" Asked the Trainer who politely greeted me. He helped me get up, which allowed me to get a good look at him. I finally realized who this was. The Champion of the Alola Region: Champion Moon.

(Yes I drew this on Paper, and this is what Moon looks like. It isn't the exact same as the Game Counterpart, but pretty similar)

"That was one nasty fall you took there, Mr.Gary. What exactly happened?" Moon asked while his Lunala was shielding us from falling debris. Soon, a Mega Pidgeot was circling above us. A powerful aura radiated off of it, and its eyes were directly staring at me. I could hear from the here Blue's Destruction in the Building. He must be furious for our Father's Death.

"Moon, why are you even here? I thought you were dealing with the Alola Situation, with the Mafia Breakout there." I questioned while my Umbreon came out and protected me from the Pidgeot who was dive bombing on me with Brave Bird.

"The Situation has calmed down, and I have my Elites dealing with that right now. However I came to deal with Blue. Leader Delia told me he wouldn't be a Happy Duck after what happened to Professor Oak. So my orders were to retrieve him." He calmly said while slowly heading for the Door to the hospital. Thats when a volt of electricity nearly hit Moon. I hurried towards Moon and pushed him to the ground to avoid the lightning. I looked up to see my Umbreon growling at a Jolteon. Then I heard a lot of screaming, again. The next thing I notice is the Mega Pidgeot landing on a Trainer.

"Well well well, It seems you have betrayed Team Delia, Moon. How upsetting, you seemed like a cool dude too." Said Blue who stood over us with his Blastoise. Moon pushed me off of him, as he stood up. A Decidueye came out and stood with him while Lunala also stood behind Moon.

"Your glory blinds you, boy. You have high self esteem and confidence, which will be your Downfall, I swear it. Now come with me, and lets go back to Delia for our nex..." Moon tried explaining until Blue's Jolteon began using Volt Switch. It charged at Moon directly, until Lunala fired a Moongeist Beam directly onto Jolteon. A gust of wind blew me back. Blue stood there just looking at Lunala. Blastoise holding him in place.

"Gary, you should go retrieve Professor Oak's Body, and take it to where you can bury it." Moon told me while his Decidueye began attacking Blue's Blastoise. I returned all my Pokemon, and ran for the Hospital Door. Blue tried to stop me, until Moon tackled him to the ground. I burst through the door again, to notice the Elevator destroyed from a Hydro Pump. I would be taking the long way: The Stairs.

As I entered the Stairs, I noticed there were people trying to get to the ground. A Woman fell into my arms, and she looked up at me. "There's a Bomb in the Building! Please Young Man! Escape while you can!" A Machamp came to escort her down the Building, but I kept climbing. Doctors were confused why I kept running up, but I couldn't leave my Father's Body. Climbing 52 stairs kept making my legs sore. I wish the elevator was working, but I had to keep going. The more I got to the top, the less I saw people, which I had a theory meant I was getting closer to the bomb.

Around the 40th floor, after 20 minutes of running up stairs, I took a break in one of the lobbies of the floor. I smashed a window and let the wind cool me down. I drank some water from a drinking fountain. Thats when I heard crying from a room. As I was about to continue my climb, I had heard desperate crying. I quickly checked the room, to see a 6 year old Kid crying with a lady on the bed. He looked up at me, tears in his eyes, holding a Eevee Plushie.

"What's Wrong, Kid?" I tried asking him, bending down. The kids straight up hugged me, crying on my arm. I looked at the Lady's Condition on the Bed. She had just finished a leg surgery, and was slowly recovering.

"Please Help her, Sir." The kid softly whispered to me. Sadly, I didn't really know how to. I didn't wanna just lift her and take her down the stairs, cause by then the building might explode before I save Professor Oak. I told the kid to wait there as I checked for any doctors or Machamps in the Building. Nobody was in sight.

I went back to the kid and what I presumed was his Mother. "Do you have any Pokemon?" I asked, and he pointed to a Bag. I walked over to the bag and thoroughly searched it to find a single Pokeball. I released the Pokemon inside to find a Gothorita. I was thankful! Gothorita knows Psychic!
I noticed the Gothorita looked at the Kid and Me and just looked away from us.

Great. A disobedient Pokemon. Another Ash's Charizard.

"Please Gothorita! Please take your Owner to Safety!" I begged to no avail. I looked at the kid, but he was shaking in fear. I was tempted to ask what was wrong, until I remembered what Gothorita can do to children. I hope this thing doesn't have Hypnosis. We were running out of time.

I rushed to the Gothorita and picked her up and showed the Woman laying in the bed.
"Listen to me! This owner and Family cares about you! And if you don't do something, they might be gone along with yourself! Put your arrogance behind and just help!"
The Gothorita looked at me confused, but FINALLY used Psychic to pick up the kid and the Mother. She pushed me out the way and headed for the stairs. She was beginning to head downstairs.

I could continue my Climb again.

I kept my upward climb, and remembered how sore my legs were. There was nobody up here thankfully, and the higher I got the more light headed I got, and I might've hurled a few times on the way up. I was sweating a lot, and burning hot. It seemed like it was getting hotter the more I climbed. The Hospital was cold before hand, but now it felt like a Volcano.

Finally, after 5 more minutes of climbing, I arrived at the 52nd Floor. The heat was intense, like it was on fire.

I rushed for my Father's Room, running through the mess Blue made. He pushed chairs over, knocked over vending machines, and sharp needles were all over the floor. When I got to the doorway, I noticed where the bomb was. It was an Electrode. I backed away slowly. He was in the same room as my Father, probably placed by Blue. I took out Blastoise by the stairs thankfully, and if I could get him over here, I could have him use hydro cannon and blast the Electrode through the wall. However I didn't want it to explode. I'd probably die, and my Father's Body would be destroyed.
Thats when I saw the electrode begin to flash red and orange. My mind kept telling me: You have 8 Seconds to Save yourself or Him:

Which will You Choose?

I ran for his body, grabbed him as best as possible and hurried out the room. As I was entering the doorway, the Electrode had exploded, and smoke filled the air. My body was sent flying into the wall, and Everything went Black.

"Mild burn injuries was spotted, but everything else was fine. He should be awake any moment now."

"And his Father?"

"His body is perfectly fine. No injuries spotted."

I awoke to see Nurse Joy and Moon looking at me. Moon wearing a bandage on his nose, and having ice on his Left Eye. I was in a hospital bed, identical to the one my Father was in. Everything was hazy, and sorta blurry, but I could make out Umbreon on me sleeping. I saw the Kid I saved sitting in the chair of the room.
"Where- Am I?" I asked while Umbreon woke up upon hearing my voice. I was told I was in the same hospital on the Bottom floor healing from the explosion. Apparently Moon picked me up after Blue beat him. No surprise really, Blue is a tough man. I wanted Moon to win, but I knew Blue would win. The Man has been around the world, learning from professionals.
"I apologize for my colleague's actions. He's been taking this more seriously than Delia thought." Moon told me while handing me a Letter that Delia herself wrote. It stated:

To Whomever this May Concern,
I, Delia Ketchum, Apologize for Any Harm that may have been done upon you from my fellow generals or supporters. I pray Arceus will spare your life, and that you will heal.
Sincerely, Delia.

Moon told me he had to leave to go support Delia and hunt down Blue. He wished me good luck, and told me to tell Ash he said "Sup." With that, he left the Room.

"Nurse Joy, what's with the kid? You know I ain't a married man yet since the Ladies are intimidated by me." I jokingly said while she rolled her eyes.

"Yes, this kid is here to make sure your ok after you saved him and his Guardian. He wanted to say thanks, but is kinda nervous to do so." Nurse Joy told me while picking the kid up. I was surprised to hear that the lady wasn't his mother.

"His Guardian?" I questioned while the kid grabbed my finger. He was smiling and began to laugh as je grabbed it.

"Yes, he's an Orphan now since both his parents died to this War protecting him. So this lady was fostering him until she got attacked while protecting the kid. She has no family it seems according to her files, she's an orphan with no husband." Nurse Joy explained while handing the kid a lollipop. I looked at the kid and just felt bad for him. Lost his parents thanks to a Stupid War that started over a Family Debate.

"Gary, you'll be released later tomorrow morning. Just be careful and try not to injury yourself more please." Nurse Joy said while opening the door for the Kid. She told me she was putting him to bed.

"Wait!" I told Nurse Joy as she was about to leave. "Can I speak to the Kid?" I requested as she nodded yes. He climbed back onto the bed and hugged me.

"Listen Kiddo, you may forget me, but I want you to stay brave to the world. Appreciate life and Pokemon, and I hope you'll find a loving family. Don't Forget what your parents did for you." I told him patting his head. He hugged me tighter, and I felt tears running down his face. "Maybe we'll meet again, after the war." I tried telling him, only to be met with Sobs. Umbreon used Psychic to pick the kid off me and hand him to Nurse Joy. I waved him goodbye as they left the room. I noticed the kid leave a bracelet with a Keystone on the Chair he was sitting on. A note in his handwriting saying,
"a gIfT fRom Faimly."
I teared up upon seeing it. This kid was giving me such a valuable item, I presume was from his parents. I had a Keystone my Father gave me, but that...

Flashback: Before the War Began...
"Well well well, if it isn't my unsuccessful younger brother. I see your gonna support Red, our old friend. Tsh. That jerk doesn't deserve you. In fact, nobody does." Blue harshly told me. This was when the War was announced, and after I gave Ash his Greninja Back.

"At least I give Father my weekly check-in unlike some ungrateful son." I told him, while he rolled his eyes.

"That Old Geezer only knows so much. I don't need his support, unlike you." He told me while grabbing his keystone necklace and putting it against my face.

Blue always brought the fact that he earned his Keystone by actually finding it instead of being given one. Mine was a Gift from my Father, who gave it to me as a little present to remind me of his love.

"So what! Why does it matter! It was never a competition to see who gets a Keystone in a Cooler fashion!" I yelled while Blue grabbed my Arm. He grabbed my Keystone bracelet and held it high above me so I couldn't grab it.

"A Rattata like you doesn't deserve such a luxury precious item!" He shouted while throwing my bracelet into the concrete road and smashing it multiple times with his foot. The stone was cracked, and the whole thing shattered.

I remember him just walking past me after that, and continuing forward while I sat there on the floor looking at my Keystone, ruined.

I have had to borrow so many keystones, and return them. I missed having my own bracelet with "I love you, Son" engraved on my bracelet.
End of Flashback.

I stared at the Bracelet Longer, while Umbreon kept sniffing it. I didn't wanna accept it, and I wanted to return it to the kid, but I know that would be rude. I didn't even know the kid's name. I knew I had to accept it.

With a heavy heart, I put the bracelet on my right wrist, knowing this was somebody's prized possession I was wearing. I felt the aura this thing had, it felt warm and soothing. With that, I fell back asleep, and dreamed of having a Loving Family.

The Next Morning:

I awoke with Umbreon rubbing against me for food.
"Ok ok, I'll feed you once we get out of here." I told him as his face filled with excitement. Nurse Joy came back into the room to release me, and as I left, I saw the Kid sitting on his Guardian's Bed. He was sleeping like Ash's Pikachu, all curled up. I smiled as I left the hospital.

Everyone stared at me the entire time as I walked through Cerulean City. I went to eat at a restaurant there to feed my Pokemon. However, I felt I had eyes on me wherever I went. So I headed for the Forest.

There I felt the calm winds, and the sounds of wild Pokemon. It was calm, soothing, and relaxing. A feeling I hadn't felt in a long time. I sat near a lake, where I saw many Magikarps live. The sounds of the water flooded my ears, and the cries of the Pokemon made me feel focused. I knew what I had to do later today, something I wished would never happen to me. I would have to bury my Father.

There wasn't gonna be a funeral for him, due to the War. I was requested to bury him near his lab, but I had a better spot. His body was already at Pallet Town, at his lab. I just had to arrive there. I talked to Blastoise about the entire situation, and he was a good therapist. When I was ready to go to Pallet Town, I called Pidgeot out to fly me home.

A Few Hours Later...
I saw my old home on the horizon, the sun was setting as a beautiful orange filled the skies. I had called an old friend to help me bury Professor Oak, she was waiting for my arrival. I passed Ash's House, which was being repaired since Red blew it up. Some Ash's belongings were still at my house, along with some of Delia's Treasures. I kept Ash's Awards despite them being smashed from Red's Machamp. I have plans for them, but that would come for after this war.

Pidgeot dropped me in front of the Lab. I knocked on the door, and to see my old friend answer it.
"Gary! Its been awhile since I last saw you!" She greeted me while hugging me. Her voice still as beautiful as ever.

"Green, your choking me >.>" I told her while she let go of me. Green was Blue's friend, but she went into hiding when the War started, so the public thought. Green helped Professor Oak in secret, and is a secret spy in a sense. She isn't on any Team at all, even Ash's. Why she isn't on Ash's Team is because she don't wanna deal with that boy, which I totally get.

She took me inside and gave me a rundown of the place. "No enemy movement and nothing has been stolen. Your Father is laying in his coffin which is still open. I made his bedroom a ceremony, so if you wanna say some words, go ahead. I'll be listening." She told me as her Venusaur put a vine around my arm.

I walked into his room, seeing all his certificates on the wall. His body laying in the coffin. Green placed her hands on my shoulder, and I Brought my Umbreon and Blastoise out. "I know where to put him, and I wanna do it now." I told her softly. Umbreon using Psychic picked up his Coffin, and we walked out the house. We went behind his house to where there was a hill with a single Oak Tree planted there. Father had planted that Tree when he was only 5, and now it sits here. We used to hang around here all the time, chasing each other, stargazing, or just sleeping here. Now however, I knew what this tree would do. It would become a memorial for my Father. A symbol for him.

I Brought a shovel to start digging a hole, and Green's Venusaur helped. Green kept staring at the Tree, and saw the writing my Father wrote on it decades ago. It felt ancient.

Eventually, the hole was big enough for the coffin to fit. Inside, I left my final gifts for my Father. Green had placed an empty Love Ball inside the Coffin, a Common way to express gratitude towards someone. Ash gave me before I left his Pokedex Professor Oak gave him. He said without that, his Journey would've been different. My gift for him was a Family photo containing Me, Him, Blue, Red, Gold, and Green. I framed it with the most expensive frame I could find, and wrote on the photo years ago, "The Best People I Know." Crazy how times have changed. With those gifts, me and Green closed Coffin, and lifted it. We softly placed it into the hole, and threw some flowers in there. Before I buried it, I finally found some words to say.

"Father. You might not know it, but you have changed this world. Your Death might not seem important, but it is to many people around the world. People care about you heavily, and I do too. I wish you never were to die, but life has a cycle. I promise to carry your legacy to the best of my Ability, so people will remember your name, to keep your flame, to tell your story. Father, may you Rest in Peace for the Amazing Man you were. May Arceus Bless you."

With that, we buried him under the tree. When we were done, Green began to cry on me softly. She was already missing him, and soon, Blastoise, Umbreon, and Venusaur were crying. I was just standing here, looking at the tree while they shed their tears. I closed my eyes, and let the scene carry out.

The Moon came out with the stars twinkling above us. We headed back into the lab, and drank some tea. "So Gary, What are you gonna do next?" Green Asked me as she sipped more tea.

"I'm gonna be honest with you for a second... I really don't know..." I answer as she nearly spat out her tea. She began to yell, but stopped finding herself acting really harsh.

"I'll ask the tree tomorrow, I have a feeling it's gonna come in handy in answering this question." I told her as she looked confused.

"Thank you Green for all you have done, I owe you a lot." I whispered to her. She seemed to blush slightly, but slapped me.

"Honestly, you still confuse me to this day." She said while eating a Donut. After the Tea, I went to bed wanting this day to end. I slept in my old childhood room, with my old posters and plushies still there. I saw a photo of me and Ash hanging on the wall.

Reminded me of something I was thinking about: What Ash would do with his Father when he confronts him.

I had an answer, but was unsure. Blastoise blocked the photo in an attempt to make me think of something else. And indeed I did. I looked out my window to see the Oak Tree sitting on the hill. I thought of some memories with the tree. Eventually I fell asleep, with a feeling that somebody was watching over me. Smiling.
