Chpt 12: The Wedding Of A Lion And A Dragon
(Authors note- High Valyrian will be in this font when spoken)
I did what the Lannister man said. I walked back into our fathers and put on a fake smile. And it wasn't long before our wedding was arranged. My father didn't want to invite the whole of Westeros to our wedding simply because he believes i'll cause trouble.
But what he didn't know was that i had a plan. I wasn't going to cause trouble for a while... At least not visibly. It was now two days later and the wedding was tomorrow.
I was sat in the Dragonpit along with Cannibal, reading under his hauntingly large figure. He liked when i read to him. And i needed his comfort at this time. Rhaenyra has been rather busy with her knight, ser Harwin. She tried to speak with me about this marriage but i have avoided her with every turn.
Another person i have been avoiding is ser Criston. I have not spoken to him since everything has happened. I was dreading to see him and hear what he has to say. And Daemon is... Well, gods only know where Daemon is.
My father made it clear he is not invited to my wedding nor any other event at court. He was more angry at his brother than i thought he would be. As i was reading the histories to Cannibal, i heard light footsteps make their way towards us.
Cannibal growled at the shadowy figure until they stepped into the light. I rolled my eyes slightly as i saw Alicent Hightower. I settled Cannibal down once i recognised her. "Princess" the girl said with his head hung. "Your grace" i said standing to my feet.
"Your handmaidens are looking for you... They want to fit you for your wedding gown" she said refusing to meet my eye. I held my tongue at the thought.
"I don't wish to be found" i said. She nodded. "Alright... I'll tell them i could not find you" she said about to walk away... But she didn't. She turned around to me as i sighed.
"Are you... Excited about your wedding, princess?" she asked. "What do you think?" i mumbled. She gave me a weak smile, refusing to step any closer to Cannibal. "I mean... He has traveled all the way from Castelry Rock to meet you and was rather eager to marry you... I think it's quite romantic."
I tilted my head at the girl as her smile faltered. "Well, in some ways" she muttered. "Do you wish to say anything else, your grace?" i questioned sharply. She paused before twisting the ring upon her finger. "I only wish to comfort you, princess. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable at your own wedding feast. This should be a good thing" she said trying to give me comfort.
"Then let me ask you, Alicent, we're you happy when you married my father?" i asked. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. "Exactly" i said. She still stayed put as i gulped.
"Has my father spoken to you about me leaving Kingslanding?... Is he... Happy about it?" i mumbled pretending to not care. For a moment, Alicent didn't seem afraid of me... She seemed almost... Sorry for me?
"I'm sure he'll miss you presence, Rhaena. He loves you" she said. I scoffed and shook my head. "Sure... Of course.... Thank you for your kind words, your grace. I'm sure i will be very happy with my new husband. Now, can you leave me please" i said.
She nodded stilling giving me a sweet smile. Once she left the keep, i threw my book away and put my head in my hands. I loathed the thought of spending another minute with that Lannister man. I was unsure if i could do it at all.
Cannibal felt my nerves as he nuzzled his snout into my shoulder. I rubbed him gently trying to remember what i was doing this all for. I was doing this for something important. It didn't matter how i get there as long as i get what i want.
The Wedding...
The handmaidens spent all morning readying me. None of them ever spoke to me. They simply just got me ready and left as soon as they could. I don't know why... But i guess i preferred it that way.
My dress was maroon velvet, Lannister colours, with golden sleeves and rubies sewn into the fabric. They also forced me to put rubies in my hair. I hated wearing Lannister colours, but i guess i didn't look horrible.
"There, your grace. Do you like it?" one of the handmaidens asked meekly. I sighed. "It's good enough" i mumbled. They all nodded before leaving the room. I placed Aemmas old ring on my finger as i gulped. I wished she was here. She'd know what to say at this moment.
A small knock on my door pulled me out of my trance. "Come!" i called out. Rhaenyra walked inside, giving me an apologetic smile. "Don't" i snapped. She looked almost sorry for me. I hated that. "Fine... I won't" she said.
She sat down on my bed, both of us sitting in silence. "Are you sure you wish to go through with this? I can saddle up Syrax and flee with you right now" she said as i laughed. "I'll be fine... Will you be fine here? In Kingslanding by yourself?" i asked.
She gave me a weak smile, wrapping her arms around me as she rested her head on my shoulder. "Today is about you. Don't worry about me" she said. We both stared at our reflection, knowing this would be the last time we live in the same household.
"I'll miss you" she said. I took a deep breath. "I know you will" i teased. We both chuckled as she held onto me tighter. "Are you ready?" she questioned. I put on a fake smile. "I believe i am."
Rhaenyra walked me to the throne room where we were met with many lords and ladies from different households and of course, Lennon.
I held my breath as i made my way over to Lennon. His kind facade was back as he kissed my cheek gently. "My betrothed" he said with a bow. My blood was boiling, but i knew i had to match his kindness. "My betrothed."
My father did not speak a word to me. Alicent held his arm as he stared me up and down. My breath was shakey as i straightened my posture.
I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder as i looked up to see Tyland Lannister, Lennons uncle. "I'm glad you have decided to join our family, your grace" he said kindly. I knew the man from the small council. Though i never spoke to him, i always thought he'd be crude like the rest of the Lannister clan. But maybe he wasn't.
I gave the man a sad smile. "Thank you, my lord" i said hanging my head. Maybe he was the easiest to manipulate... I guess i'll have to start somewhere. "Come" he said putting out his arm. I took it as we walked to the long table.
I reluctantly sat beside my father and Lennon, hoping i would burst up in flames at any second. "Your late" i heard my father mutter. "Or everyone else is early" i said with a smirk tugging at my lips.
I knew he did not want too, but he couldn't help but laugh. "I'm surprised you haven't killed anyone yet" he whispered. "As you said, i'm late. There's still time" i teased. He shook his head as we both laughed.
I intently watched all the lords at their table, scoping each and everyone out. There was the lord of house Baratheon, house Tully, house Glover and even house Stark. My eyes were mostly on the man of house Stark.
He was tall and muscular with alluring brown curls. He looked as if he wanted to be anywhere else which also intrigued me. As i was staring, he caught my eye giving me a small nod. I smiled to myself nodding back to him. "Lady wife," Lennon said taking my hand. "I shouldn't have to warn you but please keep your eyes to yourself."
He squeezed my hand tightly as i tried to remove myself from his grip. "Alright, i got it" i mumbled. He still kept his grip as i fought him harder. "I got it!" i snapped through gritted teeth.
Suddenly, lord Stark made his way to the long table causing Lennon to release his grip. "Your grace... Princess" he said with a smirk. His eyes glazed over to Lennon as he looked him up and down. "Lannister, congratulations. Your lucky to have such a beautiful wife. And you princess well... I don't believe i have to tell you that you look gorgeous tonight."
"You don't, lord" i said. "It's just Rickon, princess... Call me Rickon" he said. Silence washed over the table as my eyes stayed on the Stark man. In truth, i was wishing my father betrothed me to him instead... And i think he knew this too.
"Lord Stark, i thank you for your kind words but i'm about to speak. You should take your seat" my father said. "Of course, your grace" he said giving me one last glance before heading back to his seat.
"Do you always have to tease?" he questioned. I heard Rhaenyra chuckle from beside my father as i shrugged. My father sighed before rising in his seat. Everyone hushed themselves once he stood.
"Be welcome. We gather in celebration of uniting these two great houses. House Lannister and house Targaryen come together as one, allying ourselves for the good of the realm. We hope you feel welcome into our family... Now we shall-"
My father stopped speaking as i stared at the full plate of food in front of me. I noticed the silence as my eyes drifted from the table and to what everyone was staring at. I sat up in my seat as my breath hitched.
I watched as Daemon strutted into the room, everyone's eyes set on him. I held my tongue trying to hide my smile. I could feel the heat of rage burning off my father as Daemon stood before him.
He reluctantly nodded to Lyonel Strong, his new loyal hand, to pull up a seat. Daemon smiled smugly at me as he sat at the other side of the table. My father sighed tiredly before taking a deep breath. "Where was i?" he whispered.
"I believe you were going to tell everyone that the princess and lord Lannister are having their first dance" Lyonel whispered back. "Oh yes... Well... Yes" my father muttered.
Drums echoed the throne room as Lennon took my hand. I sighed before we made our way to the middle of the floor. I did not dance well, but i remember Aemma teaching me when i was young.
We both bowled before dancing around eachother. I stumbled once or twice which i'm sure everyone took notice of. "I'm not much of a dancer. I'm sorry lord" i said. "It's fine. I'm sure we won't be dancing again anytime soon" he said.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes at him. As we continued dancing, my eyes landed on ser Criston who was staring intently. He did not fight the urge to roll his eyes which made my blood boil. How dare he be upset with me for an arranged marriage?
Before i knew it, the room clapped as everyone joined us to dance. I immediately took a step away from my betrothed and began heading back to my seat... At least, i was until i felt a hand around my waist. I turned to see lord Stark whisking me back to the crowd of people dancing.
"Lord?" i questioned in slight shock. "You didn't look to happy dancing with that future husband of yours" he whispered. "A princess shouldn't be unhappy on her wedding day."
I smirked at his boldness as he spun me around. "Im sorry if i fall. I've never been a good dancer" i said. "It's just like fighting. I heard you fought at the Stepstones, princess. This will be a breeze" he said.
And just like that, i think my dancing got better. "Now princess, how come i have never seen you in the North?" he asked. "I have no business in the North, lord. Why would i be there?" i shot back. "Again, it's Rickon, princess. I'm not a big fan of the lord title when it comes to Targaryen princesses."
"Well i am no princess, Rickon. I'm simply Rhaena" i said. "Rhaena... I like it" he said as he lifted me up into the air. When he put me down, his hands lingered passed my waist as i moves his hand back to a suitable area. "Rickon, i hope you don't take me for some back alley sally now, do you?"
He laughed softly as i scrunched my nose up at him. "Me? Never" he said. Suddenly, i saw Daemon raise from his seat and make his way over to us. "Gods be good" i muttered. "May i, lord?" he asked putting a hand on Rickons shoulder.
"Of course, my prince" Rickon said leaving my presence. I turned to the man, eager to hear what he had to say. Daemon grabbed my hand and led me further away from the long table to avoid my fathers gaze. But there was no escaping my father quick eye as he stared us down.
"I did end up visiting my lady wife... At least what's left of her" he whispered. I smiled as i remembered what happened. "Gods... What could have happened to her?" i questioned.
Daemon looked around the room, his eyes turning stiff. "Do you truly want this?" he asked. My smile faded. "What do you think?" i mumbled.
"This is not for you. Lennon seems like a cunt and i know you see it too. He will irritate you until your last breath" he said. "I do not understand why you care, Daemon. I was not aware that what i did mattered to you" i said. "And as you said, marriage is only a political arrangement."
"Mine was recently dissolved thanks to someone" he whispered. My breath quivered as i understood his meaning. "I am not married yet but the hours pass swiftly... You are surely armed, are you not?"
Daemon paused. "I've seen you fight. I know you can cut through my fathers kingsgaurds. Take me to Dragonstone and make me your wife then" i said.
Suddenly, Daemon grabbed my face and pulled me closer to him. "Do it" i snapped. In this moment, i was practically begging him. With him by my side i would need no Lannister money. If i was to sit the iron throne, i think Daemon is the only one i would want beside me.
I've grown to like his presence more than most. I even... No... No i couldn't. I saw his face twitch with frustration and anguish. "Do it" i said my voice growing more weak. I saw him shut his eyes as he took his hand off my skin.
I saw his hand on his sword as he fought the war going on in his mind. But that dream in my head was short lived. I would never truly know if he would do that for me. Truly risk everything for me.
I would never know.
I felt someone grab my hands and tighten them behind my back. "Hey!" i shouted. Daemon instantly went to help me until a guard pulled him back.
I elbowed the guard in the face and tried to run, but three other guards pushed me to the ground. I heard the crowds scream and gasp in confusion. They pushed my face against the cold floor as i groaned in frustration. I slowly looked up to see that the men were my fathers kingsgaurds.
I watched as ser Harrold stood watching the scene, refusing to hold me down but also refusing to stop them. The last thing i saw before the guards dragged me out of the room was my father walking towards me.
The guards held me up and brought me face to face with him. "You will not ruin this for our family by conspiring and whoreing with every man in the room" he spat through gritted teeth. "You will marry Lennon, and you will do it without protest of problems like you said you would."
"You little-" before i could finish my sentence, the guards dragged me from the hall, the whole feast watching in horror. I screamed and kicked but the guards were slightly stronger... But only slightly. Daemon stood still staring his brother down. Even he couldn't believe what he was doing with his daughter.
"We stand here tonight in thanks and praise to join these two souls as one. Father, Mother, Warrior, Smith, Maiden, Crone, Stranger, here now their vows."
I could barley listen to the Septon speaking. My lip quivered as we stood in the gardens, the only place we could do the ceremony alone and away from the crowds.
The only people there to witness our marriage was my father, Alicent, Lennons father, Tyland and Rhaenyra. Ser Criston watched from a distance, grimacing at the scene. Lennon snapped me out of my daze as he laid a cold kiss on my lips.
I shuddered under his touch as a loud roar could be heard all throughout Kingslanding. I knew Cannibal could feel my pain. My heart ached at my father for treating me that way infront of everyone. I felt weak. He made me feel weak and powerless. But that sorrow quickly turned to anger.
I gave my father a deadly glare as he hung his head. He beckoned ser Criston over as he sighed. "Escort her to Casterly Rock. Make sure she goes there without rebel" he whispered so i would not hear. But i did.
"I'm leaving already? When you married Aemma there was tourneys for weeks!" i exclaimed. Everyone grew uncomfortable at me for mentioning the dead queens name. But no one grew more uncomfortable than my father. He took a step closer to me as i held my head high.
"Aemma... Aemma was a kind and loving soul. She deserved to be celebrated... You do not" he snapped. In my wave of anger, i spat in the man's face causing the kingsgaurd to flinch. He wiped the spit from his eyes as he shook his head.
"Just go Rhaena... Leave" he mumbled tiredly. "Come wife, you heard your father" Lennon said taking my arm. I weakly grabbed his arm as we all walked out to the carriage that would take us to the docks.
I couldn't even say goodbye to Rhaenyra before the guards shoved me inside. They slammed the door as i sat across from Lennon. There was silence between us. None of us knew what to say. "Are you ready to see my home?" he asked.
I stayed quiet. "You will answer when i speak to you" he snapped. I continued staying quiet as i stared out at the dark and gloomy town. "Hey!" he snapped again grabbing a fist full of my hair. I couldn't even be bothered to fight him back. "Are you even listening to me right now?" he questioned.
"Should i be listening to you? Are you saying anything that would interest me?" i questioned back tiredly. He threw me back into my seat as he scoffed. "My father couldn't have picked a worse wife for me" he mumbled.
"No... No he couldn't."
