71. The Last Portrait

Next morning Nandini woke up early. She took a long bath to relax her tensed muscles. She enjoyed the sweet smell of the liquid Medha added in the water for her to relax. Medha was rubbing her bare back while asking random question.

"Prizzi, it has been such a long time. Don't you miss home? Earlier you used to be free but after you got married you are stuck in the boundary of four walls"

Nandini's eyes were closed as she heard her sevika said. Her head nodded slightly, "I never thought that I would fell in such situation. Taking the charge to conquer the king was my mistake and now I am paying for it"

"Prizzi, do you want to get out of it. We can perfectly arrange everything to leave"

Nandini's eyes opened, "he won't let me go" she replied.

"Won't let you go? Prizzi are you afraid of Samrat?" Medha asked.

"He..." Nandini paused for a while. She don't know how to answer her. She has already stepped into this path but can she turn around and leave like it never happened? When she think of this matter, she couldn't conclude any solution to it. Besides as far she was aware of his personality, she knows she couldn't take him for granted. She don't understand what kind of training he went through to make himself perfect in the fighting field but if they were actually fighting for real then she knew she couldn't win against him or they would end up killing eachother at the end.

"Has the antidote, have you forgotten?" Nandini thought of something before replying. Though their relationship started with no emotional attachment but now they have come this far and started to know each other well. Even though she is not aware of  his all traits but she knew few which other may not know. Besides he is cunning and smart and have great resources. If she leaves she couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't be able to find her.

Medha suddenly remembered about it. She looked worried, "then are you planning to live here forever?"

Nandini, "I don't know, I will see when the times comes, but for now let's not talk about it" she couldn't deny the fact that she was attracted towards him. The way he dominates her and use pressure was a manly thing. He has all the traits that she wants in a man. But how long this attraction would last? This is the answer she don't have right now.

"It's done Prizzi, I will get you dry cloths to change" Medha got up and left while Nandini stayed in the water thinking about her husband. When Medha returned back she got up and dried her body before changing into new cloths. While she was brushing her hair in the chamber Purna walked in with a cup of tea for her.

"Prizzi I have already made the breakfast, shall I serve?" Purna placed the tea cup on the table.

"No, wait for few more moments. I am expecting guests to welcome" Nandini did her hair and looked in the mirror. Satisfied by her own style she picked up the tea cup and took a sip.

"Guests?" Purna frowned.

"Hmm.... The Rajkunwar has returned back. I am guessing he might visit me today"

"Oh" Purna nodded. At this moment Isha walked in informing about the guests waiting on the innerhall.

"Prizzi, Samrat is here"

Nandini turned around and looked at Purna who gave a nod to her before she walked out of the room. When she stepped inside the innerhall she saw two men were sitting next to eachother. Both has the similar facial feature except the skin tone.

"Samrat" she called out to get their attention and walked slowly towards them. Isha was behind her. Both men who were engaged in slight conversation looked up hearing the voice. Chandrakant noticed the woman walking in with grace. She has average height with fair skin and long hair. Her expression was normal yet her eyes were empty. There's no emotion and no one could predict what she was thinking about at this moment. He couldn't help but purse his lips. As of beauty she is beautiful enough but couldn't reach the rank of national beauty level.

"We have been waiting for you" Manik got up, "since you haven't met him before, I am here to introduce him properly" he glanced towards Chandrakant, "meet Rajkunwar Chandrakant. My younger brother"

Nandini's eyes moved towards Chandrakant and she fleshed a smile at him, "I have heard about you from Buashree herself and I am glad I could finally meet you personally" her voice was gentle and there's a touch of roughness in the tone.

Chandrakant got up with a nod, "I have also heard about you from Bhaishree. I was curious to meet you. I hope you are doing well Bhabhishree" he smiled at her.

Nandini nodded, "curiosity always makes people lust for knowledge" she replied, "Samrat since it's still early in the morning, why not stay for the first meal?"

"It would be fine" Manik nodded in agreement. Chandrakant looked at him then to Nandini. He could see that his brother was quite interested. He was dissatisfied with such interaction but stayed silent. Soon they moved towards another room which was used for eating. Table and chair were already set in the room and dishes were served on the table with freshly picked flowers. The room was small but cozy. It gives the warm filling along with the sweet mild flowery scene filling the room. When they sat on their seat Purna and Anghari came to serve food to them. The items made for the first meal was quite good and has different types of dishes.

"Let's start" Manik said and started to eat followed by the two other people in the room while Purna and Anghari stood at side waiting for them.

"Umm...this is good" Chandrakant ate as he frowned. "what's the name of this dish?" He was quite surprised that he liked the food with the first bite.

Nandini eyed Purna who came forward explaining about the food, "Rajkunwar it's call Uttapam with few chopped veggies on the top"

Chandrakant nodded and continued to eat. He didn't asked after that. Seeing him eating heartfully Manik smiled and continued to eat. Nandini looked at the two brothers eating peacefully and felt satisfied.

"Purna serve Rajkunwar Uttapam" Nandini said seeing Chandrakant finished Uttapam fast.

Chandrakant was about to reject but Purna worked fast on serving. He really like the food so he didn't reject after all. Once the meal was done they returned back to sit in the hall again.

"Bhabhishree, I hope you won't mind that I wasn't able to join the wedding. I was away from the city" Chandrakant started conversation.

"It's fine, the marriage was small and done peacefully" Nandini replied.

"I heard from Bhaishree that you belong from the outer village. Is that true?" He asked again, "I wonder how come you two met in the first place" he directly looked at Nandini as he asked.

Manik turned to look at Chandrakant raising his eyebrows at him. But Chandrakant has focused his attention towards Nandini so he didn't see him at all.

Nandini frowned slightly, is he trying to drag the history out? Or probing for something? She couldn't fathom the right answer yet she knew the Rajkunwar was not happy to see her at all.

"No one meets coincidentally Rajkunwar if you ask me for the truth. It's also destiny that works beyond our imagination. Afterall some believe and some not but that doesn't change a thing in reality. Our meeting was predicted before we had any knowledge about it" Nandini twisted the answer and replied smoothly.

Chandrakant's expression suddenly twisted as he looked at her. What kind of answer was that?

Manik turned his head and looked sideways. He really want to smile but the situation wasn't in his favour. He was aware that Chandrakant didn't approve of the idea of him marrying a village girl, this is also why he was putting efforts in the inquiry. But the subject of the conversation is not someone who will accept defeat without fight.

"Do you believe in destiny Bhabhishree?" Chandrakant asked.

Nandini smiled, "have you ever thought you would eat Uttpam today?"

"Huh?" Chandrakant was confused, "no" but he replied straightly.

"You were destined to eat so you are here today. It was already pre planned by destiny including our meeting"

Chandrakant stared at her for few seconds before giving a light nod, "I understand". His lips are pursed showing clear dissatisfaction.

"Chand, I think it's enough for today. You also have to meet Buashree. She is waiting for you" Manik said sending the tensed air in the room.

"Uh, yes" Chandrakant nodded, "then we will talk some other time Bhabhishree. I shall take my leave now" he said to Nandini before getting up.

"I will be waiting" Nandini nodded her head and got up too.  She watched them leaving. Once they are out of the sight completely she sighed and fell back on the chair again.

Just then Isha walked in, "Prizzi"

Nandini turned her head to look at her. Isha showed a latter to her and Nandini's expression changed instantly.

In the late afternoon Nandini went to meet Kashmira in Rajkunwari Mahal. She went with Anghari but when they reached the Rajkunwari Mahal, they are told that Kashmira was not there.

"She is not here?" Nandini was surprised.

"Samragyi please come inside and wait for a while. I will just check Rajkunwari's whereabouts" the sevika at the door replied.

"It's fine, you keep doing your work" Nandini turned around, "find where is she" she whispered to Anghari.

Anghari nodded and quickly disappeared like a smoke. After few moments Anghari reappeared with the information. Nandini nodded and headed towards the direction.

In the great room of ancestors Kashmira stood infront of a certain portrait staring at it aimlessly.
She was so engrossed in the thought that she didn't even heard Nandini coming inside and standing behind her.

"Buashree?" Kashmira jumped slightly bring startled suddenly. She turned around to see Nandini standing there.

"Ah Nandini" Kashmira patted her chest, "you scared me"

"My apology" Nandini immediately apologised. "I didn't have such intention but you seemed like you are lost"

Kashmira sighed. "I was just trying to recall some old memories" she turned back looking at the portrait again. Nandini also focused her gaze on the portrait. It was of a young man looked in his early 20s. He is handsome and has a majestic look on his face. This portrait was something she never saw before.

"I have never seen this portrait" she exclaimed in confusion.

"Yes, before I didn't get the chance to show you" Kashmira nodded. "That day I wanted to show you the last portrait and it's him. He is Rajkunwar Sanchit, my late fiance" while saying saw her eyes moistened.

"What happened to him?" Nandini asked.

"It was a month before our marriage. Sanchit belong to the Kualva Dynesty and Rajkunwar of Pashali. We were busy preparing for the marriage but suddenly at late night Pashali was attacked heavily without any information. No one knows what happened that night. When we got the news in the morning everything was just...." Suddenly Kashmira started to sob. This was the painful memories she kept in her heart. Nandini hold her shoulder to give her support.

"Buashree.... Please hold yourself"

Kashmira shook her head wiping her eyes, "I know it has been years since that matter but I still couldn't make my heart to believe that he is really gone"

Nandini could clearly see the pain reflecting in her eyes. She sighed inwardly. Pain - is something that doesn't let others live peacefully. At this moment she don't know how to comfort her. She turned to look at the portrait again.

Later at night Manik came to visit Nandini. She was sitting in the hall thinking deeply. Manik came inside and saw her engrossed in her thought. She wasn't aware about his arrival. He went to her silently and sat down before holding her hand making her startle.

Nandini turned her head to look at him, "Samrat? When did you come?"

"Just now. I see that you are too engrossed in your own world. What are you thinking?" Manik asked squeezing her hand lightly.

Nandini sighed. She have to tell him, "Samrat I want to go home"

Manik frowned, "this is your home".

"Samrat I need to go home, there's some emergency. I need to go"

"For how long?"

"I don't know" her reply displeased him more. But he was also aware that she wouldn't insist if there's no reason.

"What about ShtriMahal?"

"I have my ways"

Manik nodded fine, "when are you planning to go"

"Tomorrow. It will take a day to reach there. Besides I have also talked about it to Buashree" Nandini replied as she observed his expression.

"Since you have decided then we will leave tomorrow afternoon" he nodded.

Nandini was confused, "we?"

"You are my wife, so I should pay a visit to officially introduce myself. Since we get married I haven't meet your parents"

Nandini's jaw dropped on the floor. What did he say?
