Part 33 - It Was Weird
" Sorry Chlo, I won't be able to make it. As far as the whole thing with Eli goes, I don't really care anymore, Aubrey tells me after I put the phone up to my ear.
" So, you're not mad?" I ask hopefully, Jasper gives me a questioned look but I choose to ignore it.
" I have other things to worry about than my best friend sleeping with my crush."
" But I didn't-"
" Chloe it doesn't matter anymore."
" Alright, " I quietly say, wondering what changed her mind all of a sudden. Maybe she finally found that the stupid photo was fake or that Eli actually works at Eleanor's. Maybe she finally just decided to believe me because she's my best friend.
I hear Aubrey sigh over the phone, " I have to go 'hun but I'll talk to you some other time."
" But wait, Aubrey, I still-" Aubrey hangs up before I could finish what I was going to say anything. I slouch back into my swing, feeling the edge to throw my phone across the playground.
I shouldn't be as hurt as I am. Aubrey is a busy person, she has other things to do than spend her time with her best friend. She has a bigger family, a bigger social life, a bigger everything than me, and yet I can't help but feel as if I barely know her anymore because of it.
What's happening?
Jasper notice's how down I was and nudges me with his elbow, " Did you know that this whole weekend Aubrey didn't say anything about the whole mess?" Jasper says with a smile.
I turn to him, confused, " And? What does that have to do with anything?" I ask him?
" Well, my sister isn't usually the type to keep things private unless she knows she's wrong. If you haven't figured it out by now, us Grey's hate being wrong."
I give out a slight laugh, " Yeah I guess so. I just don't understand why she didn't show up, it's not like her to just leave me, " I lean back in my swing, my head looking up towards the darkening sky, " I just feel that Aubrey and I are starting to...ugh I don't want to say it. It seems so unreal, I never thought this could happen to us."
" Sometimes that's just the way life is. Besides, we only have one more week of school until the class ski trip in Colorado. Maybe being cooped up in a hotel room with her will make you guys click again."
I sigh sadly, " I guess."
" Hey."
" What?"
" It'll work out, so stop worrying."
" You don't know that."
" Never underestimate my wiseness."
We sit for a long time in silence. The sky was now fully dark blue but the stars were not visible because of the light pollution, but in a way it still made me feel at peace. When I look at the stars it makes my mind wander to the unknown. I hate the unknown.
" Hey, Jasper?" I ask.
" Mhm?"
" You're not that bad of a person."
" Wow, did Chloe Harper just try to compliment me?"
" Don't get used to it Jackass."
" Just remind me next time you're going to compliment me, I'll make sure to record it."
" Har, har. Very funny. Trust me, it won't happen ever again."
" I think differently."
" It's getting dark out Jasper. Is it past your bedtime yet?"
" No, my bedtime is- wait, I don't need to tell you that. I'm a grown man, I don't need a bedtime."
" If you're such a grown man then why is your ringtone the 'My Little Pony' theme song?"
" Hey, that show got me through some rough times in my life."
" I find it hard to believe that you have ever gone through rough times. You have a great life."
Jasper opens his mouth to say something but then closes it again before saying something else, " Trust me Chlo-bear, you don't even know a third about me."
" I bet I know more than you think."
" I beg to differ. What's my favorite color?"
" Yellow, because you always want to use the yellow icing on the cupcakes even though I always tell you to use a different color."
Jasper and I start swinging in sync and I smile, looking over at Jasper who had the same goofy grin on his face.
A gush of wind hits me every time I get higher and higher in the air and am exhilarated feeling comes over me. I felt free and I love it.
" Favorite food?"
" Ever kind, you're a pig."
" Ouch. That hurts, but you're incorrect. My favorite food is actually Jelly beans."
" Ew! Jelly beans! That's disgusting!"
" They really aren't. Normal jelly beans don't actually that stupid jelly bean game that makes you eat disgusting jelly beans, those are disgusting but I like the regular ones."
" You are by far, the weirdest person I have ever met."
" Glad I could make your life more interesting Sweetheart."
Jasper turns to my showing me an evil grin and I raise an eyebrow, " What are you- Don't you dare Jasper! Stop! Stop!"
Jasper swings his legs closer to me and kicks me while I try to maneuver away from him whilst still swinging. His swing then knocks into mine and I feel a bit of pain hit my side. Then as soon as I feel my feet touch the ground, I run out of my swing with Jasper following suit, chasing after me.
Jasper is pretty fast. I don't recall him playing a lot of sports except for when we were freshmen and he played baseball. He seemed to enjoy it since his talent in baseball got him into popularity, but he then quit after that year for an unknown reason.
" Go away, Jasper!" I say as Jasper starts to pick up speed behind me. I dash into the giant playset and start climbing up on top of the slide.
I used to climb on this twisty blue slide all the time when I was a kid. I thought I was such a badass because no other kid could climb on top of the slide. Then one day my teacher finally had enough of my rebelliousness and called my Grandma to come to school to get me off of the slide. Instead, my grandpa came and took me home where I got to stop by McDonald's on the way home.
I wish I could be a kid again.
" What the fuck? You can't climb on top of the slide! That's cheating!" Jasper shouts from the ground while looking up at me. I give him a sly smile, " Not my fault that I am more of a badass than you."
Jasper starts running up the steps of the playset and I begin to climb down the side just a bit until I get to the middle of it. I hold tightly onto the sides, trying to balance myself when I notice Jasper was at the entrance of the slide.
" Idiot, " I call him.
" Meanie, " he says back giving me a distasteful look.
" Only to you, " I say and give him a teasing wink. Jasper scoffs and then start climbing onto the slide to chase after me, and I quickly slide off the equipment, hitting the wood chips with a quiet thump. I have to catch myself with my hands in order to not faceplant into the wood chips.
Dusting off myself I then turn around to see Jasper still standing on the slide in triumph, he throws his arms up in the air, " I'm the king of the playground!" He shouts into the sky and I laugh, not expecting what was going to come next.
Jasper jumps off the slide and tackles me back into the woodchips while laughing as he wraps his strong arms around me, restraining me from breaking free.
" Let go of me, Jasper!" I shout while trying to kick him.
" You're cute when you're in distress Chlo."
I feel the heat rising to my cheeks, " Let go of me, " I say shyly. Jasper gives me a questioned look but then smiles and let's go of me. I gasp dramatically and sit up. Jasper was still on top of me but he had sitten up, straddling me which still made me uncomfortable.
Jasper's hands were by his sides and his breathing was beginning was still pretty quick. We just stayed quiet. Looking at each other.
It was weird.
It was weird not because I was nervous it anything, it was more of a weird because we didn't do anything at all. Just look at each other darkened shadows in the moonlight, hearing only the shallow breaths of one another.
I couldn't really see the details of Jasper's face because his back was hitting the moonlight, swallowing his front in a shadow. The only thing that stuck out to me was his smile. It was pretty genuine, unlike the many I see from his family members. I really like his smile, not because of the handsome face that comes with it but because it was infectious. It made me happy to see him smile that way.
" Chloe I-"
" My legs are becoming numb Jasper."
" Oh, y-yeah sorry Chlo, " Jasper says, a bit of red appearing on his cheeks. He was blushing.
The awkward Jasper rolls off of me and lands on the cold and splintering wood beside me and sighs.
" What time is it?" I ask the guy beside me.
" Not sure. Why? You got people to see?"
" No. I'm hungry and Grams might get worried."
" Alright, " Jasper says standing up then holding a hand out for me to take.
" Alright, what?" I ask my friend while raising a brow.
" Call your Grandma that you're going to be home late and let's go get food."
" Oh ok. Wait, am I going to have to pay this time?" I say taking his hand and he hoists me up.
Jasper asks as if be didn't hear my question and starts skipping off while still holding onto my hand, making me drag with him, " Jasper I really don't want to pay this time-"
" Don't worry, we won't have to pay where we're going."
" Well then where are we going?"
" It's a surprise."
I groan in exasperation, " I hate surprises."
" Trust me, " he says turning to me, showing me a goofy grin, " You'll like this one."
