Part 32 - Snickerdoodles
I wake up in a cold sweat. Sitting up on my bed, I run my hand through my hair to get it out of my face, giving out a loud sigh after.
Aubrey has been ignoring me since Friday and I was starting to become annoyed with her childish behavior. I've tried texting her multiple times, but she would always leave me on reading. Aubrey won't even listen to me, I'm sure the picture she was talking about was photoshopped or something since Eli and I have done nothing together. Even if we did, Aubrey doesn't really have the right to call dibs on a guy that broke up with her two years ago.
Then again, Aubrey is always used to getting what she wants.
Today was the day I am supposed to meet Aubrey. She gave me a set time to talk to her as if we were having a business meeting to discuss how much profit each of use would get off selling shit or something...I have no idea what I'm saying. It's early in the morning, alright?
Knowing that I wasn't going to fall back asleep, I throw my covers off of me and pull my legs off my bed and onto the floor. It was still so early in the morning that the sun hadn't even started to rise, and usually, I am not a morning person but today was different for some reason.
My problem with sleep is that after I wake up, no matter what time, I would never fall back asleep. It's been a pain in my grandparents' asses for since I can remember. I would wake up in the middle of the night and slug into my grandparents' room. My grandpa would then give me a snickerdoodle cookie, set me on the couch, and turn on my favorite tv show at the time, and I would watch it until I had to get ready for school. I miss those days. I miss the snickerdoodle cookies. I miss the Gramps.
I sludge toward my bathroom and grimace when my light flickers on. I then turn on the shower, watching as the steam fogs up my mirror. I take off my clothes and step in, gasping as the extremely hot water hits my skin.
" Shit! Shit! Shit!" I exclaim while turning down the heat.
I finish up my shower then continue getting ready by brushing teeth and hair and then washing my face. I didn't feel like putting on too much makeup since it is the weekend and I wasn't really planning on talking to any else but Aubrey, so I just put on some concealer on the dark and puffy bags under my eyes to hide my sleep deprivation. I continue to put on some mascara and chapstick then call it good and walk into my closet to pick out some clothes.
Since it already feels like winter here I put on a light blue sweater and gray sweats, then go downstairs to get something for breakfast.
It's been so long since I have made snickerdoodles. I think the last time I had actually made them was with my grandpa, right before he became ill. It was in the middle of the summer, about a week after Eli and Jasper had gotten into their big fight. Gramps said that we were making them because it was a 'special occasion' but he never told me what the occasion was.
The nostalgia was beginning to hit me, in a good way, and a calmness comes over me and I sigh. I missed this. I missed actually getting to enjoy baking, instead of having it as a burden.
I started off by preheating the oven and then getting out a bowl and some butter and sugar and cream the ingredients for about 4-5 minutes. Gramps always told me that this step was important because the butter creates the smooth texture of the cookie. Let's be honest, no one wants a hard cookie...unless you do, then I'm not judging.
I then add the creme, flour, salt and then a touch of baking soda so that the cookies will rise, and mix it together. After that, I make the cinnamon-sugar mixture and begin to roll the cookie dough I had made into little balls and then drop the cookie dough into the cinnamon-sugar mixture, making sure to coat the dough well.
After all of that, I make sure to put parchment paper on the cookie sheet and then put the cookie dough balls onto the pan and throw it in the oven. Well, I don't literally throw it but I do lightly toss it and- nevermind.
Since I already know how much time the cookies stay in the oven for I don't need to set a timer and I start washing the dishes I used to make the cookies. I didn't make as big as a mess as I used to when using this small kitchen, but that didn't mean that Grams wouldn't kick my ass if she didn't find every crook and corner spotless.
" That's an aroma I haven't had the opportunity to smell in a long time. What's the special occasion? " Grams asks coming downstairs.
Speak of the devil.
" I thought since it's been a while since we last had some snickerdoodles, so I made some."
Grams smiles but you could still see the sorrow waters that were swarming her old gray eyes. She misses Gramps as much as I do, probably even more.
" He loved snickerdoodles, " she says sadly and I nod in agreement, giving a soft chuckle.
We fell into silence and I decided to check the time. We had about another six minutes until the cookies were done, but the amazing aroma of cinnamon and sugar was making my mouth drool, making me impatient.
" Oh, I forgot to tell you, I met Leo's girlfriend the other day. Harley was right, she is gorgeous, " I say trying to lighten the mood. Bringing up Gramps always seemed to make the room gloomier when we talk about him.
Gramps never wanted that.
" I'm so happy for Leo, but I'm slightly worried about the girl. Does she have some mental disorder or anything?" Grams says and I laugh.
I shake my head, " Nope. Though she is a bit forward when it comes to speaking her mind about things."
" How so?" Grandma says raising an eyebrow.
Grandma leans up against the counter, holding her head up by her hands, " Well for some reason she says that she sees chemistry with Jasper and me-"
" Jasper? As in Jasper Grey? If he is anything like Aubrey-"
" He's nothing like Aubrey, " I snap at her unintentionally and instantly try to cover it up, " I mean, even though they are twins, Jasper can be more of a pain in the ass about things."
Grams mumbles something incoherent and I look at her questionably, " What was that?" I ask.
" Nothing darling, shouldn't your cookies be done by now?"
I jump as I realized that I had forgotten about my cookies, and quickly turn around towards the oven.
" Don't forget your oven mitts, " Grams reminds me.
" Right, " I agree and grab them off the counter and put them on, then open the oven to take the cookies out. A wave of heat and the mouth-watering scent of snickerdoodles hit me as I take the cookies out of the oven and set them over a hot pad.
" They look perfect."

Grams drops me off at the park and I sigh shakily. I made sure to get here early since Aubrey hated it when people were late. Aubrey wasn't here yet and a wave of relief came through me. Aubrey isn't a person that you would want to piss off. Even though she might seem kind at first, but if you look closer into those big blue electric eyes, she'll turn you to stone. That is if you get on her bad side, which I'm afraid that I have.
How the fuck did I become so stupid?
I look up from the ground, not noticing until now that I was just standing there on the sidewalk, acting like a weirdo.
I haven't been to this park in ages. Leo used to take Harley and me here when we were little. I remember one time, we made Leo play hide and go seek with us, and we made him count to one-hundred while Harley and I climbed up the giant pine tree that was right beside the park. Leo did end up finding us, but while we were climbing down, Harley's foot got caught between two branches and fell out of the tree. Harley had ended spraining her foot and breaking her elbow. To this day Leo and I never let her live it down, even though Leo still blames himself for it happening in the first place.
I pull my phone out of my pocket to check the time- it was 7:05 now, where could she be? She's never late.
The old and noisy swing set was still there. It had become even rustier from the last time I was here, but still had a bit of the original yellow paint on it. I decided to go sit in the swings, always choosing the higher swing which was the one to the right. I guess you could say that the childish edge to get the higher swing never left me.
My feet push me off into the air as my legs move back in forth. The freeing sensation of almost feeling like I was flying felt exhilarating to me. No wonder I liked the swings so much as a kid, I kind of feel like Superman.
I hear the crunching of wood chips behind me and I smile, relieved that Aubrey had finally shown up.
I turn my head around and stop swinging, " I'm so glad that you made it Aubr- wait, you're not Aubrey."
A familiar set of blue eyes stared deep into mine and the person smirks, " I'm glad that you know which twin is which Chlo-bear. Were you expecting her?"
It was from Jasper. Aubrey didn't show up.
" Why are you-"
" Why are you-"
" Sorry, you go first, " Jasper says awkwardly while putting his hands behind his neck.
" Why are you here?" I repeat.
Jasper walks forward and sits in the swing next to me, " Needed some nostalgia, " he says while turning to me, "why are you here?"
I look away from Jasper and frown, " I got into a fight with Aubrey. She won't even talk to me."
" About what?"
" Doesn't matter. I was supposed to meet her today but she hasn't shown up, and Aubrey is never late."
Jasper chuckles, " That's for sure. When we were in elementary school, I remember her dragging me out the door by my ear so we would get to school on time. I was still in my PJs!"
I laugh, " I remember that day! You got in trouble with Ms. Pat and had to call your mom to bring you another set of clothes. I bet Aubrey would've to laugh her ass off if she got to witness that."
" God, I am so glad she was in the other class. She wouldn't of let me live that down."
We both laugh and then the quiet consumed us. It was a weird coincidence finding Jasper here, almost as if the universe wanted us to be here.
The universe can go fuck himself. I needed Aubrey here, not Jasper.
I here Jasper sigh and turn to look at him. His blonde curly locks were now starting to barley cover his eyes, but in a way, I think I liked it at it's longer length, it looked more fitting on him. My eyes linger over his side profile. He had a strong jawline that I'm sure a lot of the girls at our schools swoon big time, and his big blue eyes, you could easily get lost in those if you look into them for long enough.
" I thought that bosses didn't drool over their employees, " Jasper says and my cheeks turn bright red and I quickly look away from Jasper.
" I-I wasn't drooling! I was just wondering how someone can be so ugly, " I retort.
Nice save Chloe, you're a genius.
" You're just jealous that I am way better looking than you and that people actually think I'm hot-"
Jasper gets cut off when my phone chimes in my pocket. I take it out and my hand tenses up while still holding my phone.
It was Aubrey.
