Chapter 2: Danger
New York City
The city that never sleeps, home of the Avengers, Spider-Man, Venom, and Mutants. At the food store, a blond adult man was picking up some food and drinks. He was gonna make pizza, so he bought some ingredients. Dough, basil, tomatoes to make into sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Along with some soda drinks and a loaf of bread.
The man pays for the food as he heads home. He sees how everyone is living with their daily lives. It reveals that this man is Trevor Bradford, son of Chris Bradford aka Dogpound the Dog Mutant.
"Another day in New York." Trevor said to himself.
He continues his walk back to his home with his groceries when couple of Purple Dragon thugs ambush him.
"Look, I don't want trouble so just back off." Trevor said not in the mood.
"Too bad, dude. Now give us your valuables." The big goon threatened with his knife.
"No. I ain't gonna let you take anything." Trevor said.
"That's it!" The thug shouts as he goes to stab him, but Trevor catches his hand.
Trevor then twisted the man's wrist, making him drop the knife. Trevor began to growl as his eyes glow blood red as his body began to change. He grows bigger, grows fur, his nose becoming a muzzle as his teeth turns into fangs. Bone spikes on his shoulders and back. His ears became canine ears. He looks down at them menacingly, growling as they sorta wet their pants.
"Y-Y-You're—" The Thug sputtered.
"Dogpound's kid? Yeah, I am. So you better back off or this dog will play with some new chew toys." Trevor growled.
The thugs ran away in fear as Trevor shifted back into his human form. He continues with heading home. He arrived home to hear his 2 brothers and 2 sisters laughing upstairs and finds his dad sleeping on the couch, drooling like the dog he is. He wakes up to see Trevor getting the food ready.
"Ah my oldest son. Glad to see you home. Got me beer?" Dogpound asked groggy.
"No, because you need to lay off the beer. Got you soda." Trevor said as he tossed him a soda.
"Ugh. You sound like your mom." Dogpound grunted as he drinks.
"Yeah well, someone had to be the responsible one." Trevor said back to his father.
It has been 10 years since their mom died. With him as the oldest one and his dad a lazy mutt here and there, it was up to him being the responsible one. He did most of the things their mom did, but Dogpound would help sometimes.
"Look, I'm sorry. I am proud how well you took your mom's job. Plus your siblings love the attention." Dogpound said as he gets up and helps Trevor.
"Yeah I know. Sometimes I wish I could just have some alone time." Trevor said as he makes the pizza.
"Tell you what, I'll watch over the little pups and you can do whatever you want in the city. Okay?" Dogpound said.
"Thanks dad." Trevor said as gets his things.
"One more thing, how have you been with your powers lately? I know that you're different from me, but there's no telling how my mutation will affect your body." Dogpound asked.
"You can relax, Dad. I'm totally fine. I've been able to shift from dog to human form easily." Trevor said.
He then left his home and started to run through the city, but as he does, he quickly stops for a moment as he felt some pain in his body. He starts to feel dizzy as he gripped on a wall to support him. He growls as his eyes turned red and his teeth become fangs. He then shifted back to normal. He breaths heavily as he tries to calm himself. He soon realized that his wild dog side was trying to take over. Now he had to figure out how to control it... before it controls him.
Meanwhile somewhere else in the city, Bebop and Rocksteady were trying to get their son, Tyler, ready for his first day at high school.
"Come on son. You're gonna be late for school." Rocksteady said through the door.
"It's your first day at high school." Bebop added.
Tyler then came out of his room, looking upset.
"I can't. I'll be the freak there." Tyler said.
"You are not a freak. You don't look nothing like a freak." Bebop said.
"I know that. I mean this." Tyler said as he levitates with his wind powers.
"Oh. Your Meta-powers." Rocksteady said.
"I don't wanna hide my powers." Tyler said.
"Well, good thing you're not going to a normal high school. Your dad and I found a school in central city for people like you. Metas, monsters, orcs, trolls, etc. son. You won't feel like a freak there." Bebop explained.
"Really?" Tyler said.
"Yeah, now go get ready. We'll portal you there." Rocksteady said as Tyler hugs them.
"Thanks dads." Tyler said as he goes to get ready.
"Heh. Good kid. So, what should we do while he's gone?" Bebop asked looking at his husband.
"Well... I got some ideas." Rocksteady chuckled as he pulls Bebop closer to him.
"Oh yeah?" Bebop laughed as they kissed.
Hall of Justice
"So what do we do now? We just stay here or what?" Gruff asked.
"Some of us stay here. Unless if anyone has any important matters to deal with?" Nora said.
"I do. I've been working on a case for the last month. I actually discovered a fifth murder right before I was called here." William said.
"Oh. Who was it?" Viper asked.
"Some journalist, a Freddy Holden. Looks like he was on to something. I checked his place to find everything destroyed." William explained.
"So I just looked into his profile and it seems he was one of those journalists who like exposing the truth. Says on his last post he was onto something big in Gotham." Nellie said.
"Were there any other clues at the crime scene?" Luke asked.
"Only this." William said as he flips a coin to Luke to catch as he sees an owl symbol on the coin.
"A coin?" Luke said confused looking at it.
"It's the Court of Owls' calling card. Something I thought I would never see again." William explained with a little fear.
"The Court of Owls? I thought they were wiped out years ago." Mia said listening in.
"So did I. Batman, his Knights, and the League destroyed them all in 2020 when the Court was working with the Batman Who Laughs." William said.
"What's the Court of Owls? Sounds like a birdwatching club." Mojo joked.
"Ha! You wish. They're an exclusive secret society. Most the wealthy and powerful families of Gotham City are the ones who truly own Gotham. They've existed since the beginning of Gotham City. No one really dares to try and figure out who they are because once they do... they're dead." William explains with seriousness.
"How do you know so much about them? From reading the files?" Worax asked.
"Because while you guys were told sweet bedtime stories, my dad told me the rumors and stories of them in the sewers." William explained as he looks out a window. "Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time, ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime. They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed, speak not a whispered word of them or they'll send the Talon for your head."
"Well that's just creepy." Laura said a little scared.
"It's the nursery rhyme about them. Almost everyone in Gotham knows it. The earliest version of the Court rhyme is from the 1700s." William said to them.
"Plus they were also after the Fountain of Youth. Heh, seems pretty kill-happy for people wanting eternal life." Zeke said.
"Yikes. So why don't some of us go to Gotham City and see if the Court of Owls have truly returned." Bowser Jr. suggested.
"Sounds like a good idea." Mika said.
"Finally, time to bash so skulls." Mojo laughed as he cracks his knuckles.
Gotham City
Soon a small team of the JL heroes made it to Gotham City with William Jones the Croc. The ones who came are: Johnny, Mia, Rocky, Spike, Drax, Mason, Nanaue, Bowser, Viper, Ravi, Luke, Gruff, Mika, Zeke, and Jay.
"So what's the plan? There is a plan, right?" Nanaue asked.
"I've been trying to find any other clues to finding the Court but no luck." William said.
"But there might be someone who might be able to help us." Zeke said as he brings up a profile on his holographic projector.
"Oswald Cobblepot. The Penguin. He runs the Iceberg Lounge. Claims he went legit." Mason said.
"He definitely runs more than liquor through that bar." Mia says with a snort.
"I would know, since my dad took me there a bunch of times growing up." William said remembering the times with his father.
"Lucky, my parents didn't take me." Viper said.
"Pfft, if you wanted a fake ID, all you had to do is ask. My dad taught me many of his tricks." Johnny said.
Soon the team of heroes made it to the bar as Drax kicked Oswald's office door opened.
"That door's sandalwood. Custom job. Fixing it is gonna be a pain in the ass." Oswald said.
"Yeah, just answer our questions and I won't have to break anything else." Drax said.
"Smile. Viral video of you kids assaulting a reformed citizen is the last thing you need right now." Oswald said as he points to a security camera.
"Reformed? Then you wouldn't mind answering some questions." Nanaue said.
"Okay. Shoot." Oswald said.
"Do you know of the Court of Owls locations?" Ravi asked.
"Why do you want to know?" Oswald asked as he pours himself a drink.
"Because we think they might be back."
"Really? Well, there is their old underground lair that they had before your parents wrecked it. Might be worth looking." Oswald said.
"Thank you, Penguin. Glad you were able to cooperate." Mia said.
"You kids are just as annoying as your parents." Oswald said.
"We take that as a compliment." Mason said with a wink as they left.
The heroes soon reached the location of where Oswald told them. They soon saw that there were people here. The JL Kids spotted a man pulling an old lady on her wheelchair. Both were wearing an Owl Mask.
"Losing to those color costume people years ago was such an insult. So many things we could've done..." the old lady said while caressing a stuffed dog.
"Their absence has left us an opportunity for our new acquisition. Along with our new partner who is giving us support." The man said.
"Good. However do try to be careful where you let them dig, my dear. As for the other issue..." The old lady said.
"We've already bribed the senators. I've been assured your bill will pass early next month." The man said assuringly.
"Wonderful. Heh. I abhor dealing with fifth." The old lady said as she caress her dead dog.
"I'm sorry ma'am, but we need to get you to safety." Another man said as he goes to push her.
"Scared of mice scratching on the walls? You're all soft." The old lady laughed.
The heroes watched as they entered another room. The they continued to sneak around the underground lair when they came across an Owl member who was cuffed in the center of the room.
"No, no, no! Forgive me! I made a mistake, it won't happen again. Please!" The member cried.
Suddenly metal claws popped out from the ground as they form a cage around the JL kids. As this happens, members of the Court of Owls appear from the shadows.
"Death to the traitor." A man said to the cuffed member.
"And death to the trespassers." A woman said pointing at the JL Kids.
"Fifth! Despicable scum! Kill them!" The old lady said pointing at them.
"The Voice of the Court comes. He will dictate the punishment." Another man said.
A man wearing a different owl mask from the others appeared. He looked at the traitor and the JL kids before coming up to a decision.
"The Court cannot forgive your failure. You will atone with blood." The Voice said.
"Don't do this. I'll do anything!" The former member begged.
"And you, vermin, do not belong here. The last time intruders trespassed our home was years ago. The punishment will be the same." The Voice said.
"You really gonna kill the Green Arrow's daughter?" Mia threatened.
"Ah yes... Mia, right? Then that must make you all the Justice League's sons and daughters." The Voice said.
"You got that right." Bowser Jr. said.
"You... you must be Killer Croc's son." The Voice said pointing to William.
"Yeah, I am." Croc said.
"Your parents were responsible for our destruction. But I was the one who survived and worked hard rebuilding the Court. What better way to get revenge on them by killing their children." The Voice said.
"Yeah, not gonna happen!" Spike said with determination.
Gruff then uses his Earth powers to ground-pound the floor, knocking the Court off their feet. Nanaue, William, Rocky, and Bowser then break the cage opened. The Court began to back away as they run. Their Talon Warriors come out of the darkness as they go to attack the heroes.
"Cowards! You call yourself powerful and yet you can't fight back?! Letting your Talons do your dirty work!" Drax roared.
The heroes began to fight their way through the lair. William saw the Voice escaping.
"I'm going after the Voice!" Croc shouts.
"What? No! We need to stay together!" Luke said.
"He's right! We need to get out of here. We're not gonna win this today." Viper said to them.
Viper then uses his Sage Force powers to teleport them all to safety.
Hall of Justice
"So... definitely looks like the Court of Owls is back." Ralph said.
"Yes, and they're working with someone." Zeke said.
"But who?" Bart asked.
"No idea, but we're not gonna let them regain their control over Gotham City. Whoever their new partner is... we're gonna take them down and the Court. It's time we finish with our parents started." Mia said with determination.
The team of heroes nodded at each other and they knew they have a mission to complete.
