Angelo left the following morning. Funny enough as if on cue, I received a text shortly after he left:
'Good morning, beautiful. Sleep well?'
I furrowed my brow when I realized that it had been sent by an unknown number. Frowning, I replied: 'Hey, I think you have the wrong number. Who's this?'
Shortly after, they replied: 'I'm speaking with Aimee, right?'
'Who's asking?'
'I take that as a yes ;)'
I huffed. 'Ok, but who is this?'
'I'm surprised you haven't guessed :P'
I frowned, furrowing my brow. 'Angelo?'
But why would he be texting this so soon after leaving? And with an unknown number at that?
The person replied: 'Angelo? Who's that, and why is he texting my bae?'
I rolled my eyes, tossing my phone away. "I don't have time for this shit."
. . .
I went to shower shortly after. The next time I checked my phone, I was met with two missed calls from the unknown number. Despite that, whoever was behind it still hadn't confirmed who they were. I sighed exasperatedly, then blocked it.
I finished getting ready for the day, then headed to class. After the class ended, as I was heading back to my dorms, I called Nabila.
When she picked up, she said, "Hi, what's up?"
I asked, "Are you free now?"
"Yes, why?"
"I'm bored. Do you wanna go somewhere?"
"Sure, where do you have in mind?"
"I'm not sure, we can decide it as we walk around."
"Alright."
I smiled. "Great! I'll see you in a bit."
. . .
I met Andre, the guy who had danced with Nabila a few weeks before and hung out in her room, on my way to the dorm. We exchanged polite greetings and said little else. We split ways after we entered the dorm, but by then I'd already changed my plans for the afternoon.
I rushed into Nabila's room through our shared bathroom. She shrieked when I barged in, dropping the handheld console she had been playing. "Aimee, knock next time! You nearly gave me a heart attack."
"Sorry, sorry!" Grinning, I added, "So um, forget about the walk."
Nabila's brows rose. "What? Why?"
"Well...let's just say that you'll be having a visitor in a bit."
"What? Who?"
"Oh, you'll see!"
"Stop!" Nabila groaned. "Just tell me."
I giggled. "I'm surprised you haven't guessed."
Her brow furrowed and remained so for a while, then her eyes widened. "Wait, don't tell me that Andre-"
"Ding ding ding!"
"Oh my god!" Nabila leaped from her bed, dashing to her door and locking it.
I burst out laughing. "Why-why are you locking the door?"
"Because-" She tugged at the t-shirt and sweatpants she wore, "-I'm not dressed well enough to see him!"
"Wouldn't you have followed me out like this?"
"Yes, but-"
"Then it's good enough for him."
"Aimee-"
I wagged a finger. "Ah ah ah, trust me."
Sighing, Nabila sunk onto her bed. "Fine. But I doubt that he's even going to come here."
"Why?" I scoffed. "You really think he's not here to see you?"
"Well, we haven't talked much honestly, and I haven't seen him since the last time you saw us together."
"Really? When last did you both text each other?"
"Never; he doesn't even have my number."
My brows rose. "Really? He didn't ask for it?"
"Well...he did..." Nabila looked away.
I narrowed my eyes. "But..."
"Well, um...I told him that my phone had issues at the time," Nabila mumbled.
I groaned, "Bila!"
"I got overwhelmed and it was the first thing that came to mind!"
"Well, you're giving it to him today."
"That's if he even comes-"
There was a knock at her door. Nabila let out a little shriek. I mouthed 'told you so'.
Grinning, I turned to the door. "Who is it?"
Sure enough, Andre's deep voice replied, "It's me, Andre. Can I come-"
Before he even finished, I flung the door open, grinning. "Sure, nice to see you here!"
He stepped back when he saw me, then cleared his throat. "Hey, is Nabila in?"
"Of course!" I stepped to the side, gesturing inside the room. "Come in."
He did. Nabila looked like she was trying to shrink into her bed as much as possible.
Andre smiled at her. "Hey."
"Hi," she replied meekly.
"How have you been?"
"Alright, you?"
"I'm good. I've been hoping to spend some time with you: is this a bad time?"
"Well um...Aimee and I are heading out-"
I interrupted, "Oh don't worry about that Bila, we can always do that some other time."
She looked at me, pleading with her eyes. "Are you sure? I mean, Andre can accompany us instead- if he wants to, of course."
Hmm, in that case, she'll spend time with Andre and I'll have some company for the afternoon. Sounds like a win-win!
I grinned, looking at Andre. "Sounds good, doesn't it?"
He nodded. "Sure. Where were y'all planning on going?"
"We didn't have anywhere in particular in mind, so we're open to suggestions."
He thought for a bit. "Well, there's a really good ice cream place not far from here-"
"Great, then that's where we'll go!"
. . .
The ice cream parlor was sparsely occupied when we got there, so we had no trouble getting a table. However, I left Nabila and Andre alone at it soon after we got our ice cream, uttering a flimsy excuse of wanting to be closer to the ice cream so I could get easier refills.
I settled not too far from them, watching them from the corner of my eyes and struggling to keep from grinning like a proud mother. Andre was definitely in the driver's seat of the conversation, but with each passing second, Nabila left her shell more.
I grinned when she giggled at something Andre said. Yes, I think I hear wedding-
My heart nearly flew out of my chest when a voice yelled in my ear, "Boo!"
I shrieked, jerking up. I would have fallen out of my seat if it wasn't for the person who steadied me: Miguel, who was laughing.
Putting two-and-two together as the shock wore off, I shoved him away. "What the fuck?"
Five guys were laughing behind him as well, two of whom I recognized: Jack and Dustin. My face warmed.
As his laughter settled, Miguel choked out, "Damn, you're jumpy as fuck!"
"Well fuck you, that wasn't funny!"
Grinning, Jack said, "Chill-"
I snapped, "Don't fucking tell me to chill."
"Woahh," the other guys echoed.
Jack furrowed his brow, chuckling. "What are you mad for? We're just playing. Damn, you're like a chihuahua-"
My fists clenched. "Excuse me? Did you just compare me to a dog just because I'm not interested in your stupid games? You're so fucking childish."
All laughter subsided.
Jack's expression darkened. He walked up to me till he was looking down at me then snarled, "It was a joke, not a dick; don't take it so hard."
I leaped up, but Nabila got in the way before I could do anything further. Holding me back, she cried, "Aimee, don't!"
Sneering, Jack looked at the guys he'd come with. "What the fuck does this bitch even think she can do?" They all laughed and jeered, apart from Miguel.
My blood was boiling by then. I yelled, "Get the fuck out of my face!"
He looked back at me, smirking. "Or you'll do what?"
Before I could reply, Andre stepped in and growled, "Hey bro, back off."
Looking at him, Jack scoffed. "This is none of your fucking business; if you wanna make it your business, then we can take this outside."
"Woahhh, nobody needs to take anything outside!" Miguel placed a hand on Jack's shoulder. "Let's just go-"
Jack shrugged his hand off. "Nahhh, I'm perfectly fine here-"
"Then I'll call the police on you," the manager of the ice cream parlor said as he walked up to us. "Please leave sir: you are disturbing my other customers." Sure enough, the few other people in the parlor were focused on us.
Jack glared at me one last time, then walked away. "Fine; I was tired of dealing with this dumb bitch anyways." The other guys followed him, except Miguel, who looked apologetic.
I quickly reached for my cup of ice cream, but Nabila knocked it out of my reach before I could hurl it at Jack.
Whirling, I shoved her away. "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
Andre steadied her, frowning at me. "Chill, she was just trying to help."
"Well I didn't ask for her fucking help!"
I stormed away, shoving past Miguel as I left the ice cream parlor.
