Chapter 3

I walk into the house as quietly as possible. Being a midwife means weird hours for my mother and she sleeps when ever she feels like it. Luckily I could hear sounds from the kitchen which meant two things. One, I could be as loud as I pleased, and two, food.

Our house was nothing special. But home was home. There were pictures of me and my older brother Dallas littering every available surface. Bright coloured throw pillows scattered on every seat. There was no art on any of the walls except projects Dallas and I did for school and clearly that was not art since we both were as crap as each other.

"Mother how are you this afternoon?" she was wearing a vest and leggings and her hair was tied up in a messy bun. I couldn't tell weather she had just woken up or was just about to go to bed.

"Hi darling, I can't find any food so I'm ordering pizza." She resigns her self to the fate of junk food.

"Fine by me." I grin with a satisfied look. She rolled her eyes and dials the number for the pizza and ordering the usual before walking into the lounge and sprawling out.

"How was school?" Typical mother question

"Fine." Typical kid response.

"Anything interesting."

"No." I sigh. I forgot that something interesting had actually happened but having already said my regular answer I decided to go along with it and keep Ashers secret for now.

"Nothing interesting ever happens to you." she rolls her eyes.

"Maybe you should find someone to have more interesting conversation with then." I grin at her and sprawl out over her outstretched legs.

"Who could be more interesting to talk to then my over grown baby girl." I gulp, she can't know can she, my mom always said she had eyes in the back of her head but seriously. It took a second to calm myself down, of course she didn't know.

"I don't know a date perhaps." I giggle. If I didn't know my mum better I would say she was blushing.

"Would you stop with that." She smacks me playfully on the leg.

"What about you huh? I haven't seen any hunky men on our doorstep recently." My whole demeanour turned sour. It had been a while since I had dated it was true but It was for a good reason. She knew the basic details of the situation but hadn't gotten too specific. And then I remembered that infact I did have a hunky man on my doorstep today... well close enough. In the car out side my house. But I couldn't tell her so I shut up.

"No guys for me thank you."

Me and my mum had a pretty close relationship. She was a midwife and when I wanted to grow up I wanted to be an OB (a baby doctor) which meant we had a lot in common. We binge watched Grey's anatomy together. I knew all my mothers colleagues and they all loved me. I stopped by her work as much as I wanted and we both loved baby's.

My mum was pretty young when she had me and even younger when she had Dallas who was now at collage. And was way too young for my asshole dad to ditch her with two toddlers on top of that. So with two adult children and the fact she was only 39 she was a very busy single Mum. I had convinced her to go on a couple of dates over the years but they had all gone so badly I think we had both given up hope. Dallas was no help at all, when ever he rang home my mum burst into tears because she missed him so much. So it left me as her primary source of entertainment. And she just loved to tease me about everything.

It didn't help that as of recently I was pretty much friendless too. It was kind of weird that I didn't really have anyone to gossip about Asher Perry too.

Me and my old friend Elle did not end on the best of terms, having my boyfriend cheat on me with her and then taking my other two friends with her as she went was defiantly not a good time in my life. But I like to think of it as a blessing in disguise I have had more than enough time to work on getting the right grades to be a doctor where as these girls are more worried about their hair. My boyfriend was a massive douche bag anyway. I'm happier with my mum as my BFF.

University could not come quick enough.

When the phone rang my mum sat up but I immediately launched myself at the phone. "Lettie! Bring the phone back."

"No were just about to watch a movie and eat pizza I don't want you being all sniverly after talking with Dallas uh-uh no way."

"What if it's not him." She seems panicked which got me curious, so naturally I answered.

"Hello?"

"Hi there, is Amanda in?" when I heard it was a man and not Dallas I almost choked on my own spit. Mums eyes widened at me and she immediately launched for the phone.

"I'm sure she's around here somewhere," I say from behind the table moving around the same time she does. 'MUM!.... MUM!" I yell cupping my hand over my mouth "hmm, I guess she's upstairs, May I ask whose calling..."

"Tag."

"Huh Tag, funny name don't you think?" now I was just winding her up. She was bright red in the face and her eyes were widening at me begging me to give her the phone. I roll my eyes and reluctantly pass it too her. She snatches it away with out so much as a thankyou which I thought was very rude considering I did such a good job answering the phone.

"Tag, Hi sorry about Lettie. She was just kidding." She holds the phone to her ear and runs up the stairs like a teenager. Hmm maybe I was wrong and my mum hadn't forgotten about dating after all. Just one of us then, I sigh before naturally digging into her side of the pizza seeing as I had finished mine. She always had just the plain old boring margarita but it would do. When eventually she made the walk of shame down the stairs with her cheeks tinted pink I cocked an eyebrow at her which she successfully ignored. Luckily she was too shy about it to notice I had finished her pizza and started the movie with out her.

We sat for a minute watching the tv in silence before I casually almost nonchalantly drop...

"So who's Taaagg" needless to say my head was then pelted with a pillow. It was a stupid thing to say because almost immediately her super spidery senses kicked in and she just knew I had eaten her pizza. There fore I reluctantly had to go make her a sandwich. Which in it's self was strange because she told me we had no food and I developed the sneaky suspicion she herself just wanted pizza and she put on the Mum façade about junk food being bad for you.

"My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard 'and damn right it's betta than –"

"Hi bitch." I pick up the phone.

"Hey lover. Theres a naked man in your bed waiting for you with whipped cream and strawberries."

"Why ruin it with strawberries please bring alternative fruit next time." I sigh like I'm disappointed.

"Trust me baby you'll forget all about the strawberries."

"Well then why bring them." I laugh. "Also Adam if your in my house right now I swear to all that is holy including your pokemon cards that you hide under your bed I will destroy you. And if you are then please don't be naked with whipped cream everywhere, it may just burn my eyes out."

"How'd you know about the pokémon cards you bitch!"

"Your mum has a big mouth. I've also seen baby pictures. Naked ones. I don't need grown up naked mental images thanks."

"MUM did you tell Lettie about my pokemon!" I hear the stomping of stairs and patiently wait holding the phone to my ear and spreading mayo on the bread. "Mum says hi." He says grumpily.

"Tell her I say hi back, and I'll pop in to see her soon."

"She says that would be lovely." I grin. Adam is my soul sister.

"Who needs a boyfriend when the love of your life is gay. Can't you just swing the other way, make a little exception for your BFF." I say Adam is my BFF but the truth is we've known each other our whole life's and although he's like a brother to me, we go to different schools and I hardly ever see him. I even think my mum asked his mum to ask him to ask me if we could hang out more recently. Because my actual best friend and my actual boyfriend need to be sent down to Tartarus. Yes I watch too much percy Jackson. Im a fan. Sue me.

"I'm sorry lover not even for you."

"ugh!" I groan. "Your so mean to me."

"I love you."

"Was there a specific reason you called?" I ask rolling my eyes.

"You wann'a hang out with a group of us tomorrow at maccas?"

"errr. Why not I have no life as it is."

"You're a strong independent woman, your intelligent, funny and above all else sophisticated." We both know he's lying at the sophisticated part so we both snort a laugh. "I never liked that Elle chick anyways." He's lying, he did.

"I Love you hombre you're the bestest."

"Don't you forget it. Love you back." And then he hangs up. After giving a beautifully made sandwich to my glaring mother who I could have sworn was still blushing I legged it upstairs to sleep after an exhausted day.
