13. Secrets of Oatsjunk

I never knew that my life will take such an unexpected turn.

After gruelling 12 hours' train journey, I hopped on the bus to take me to my destination but unavoidable traffic led the bus to take unexpected other routes while I was listening to music, engrossed myself in imaginary world while my eyes were closed that when the bus made a screeching sound stop, it left me stranded in no man's land. I couldn't even complain.

Just why? Why nothing goes perfectly?

Not even a single person could be seen, the road was muddy and the sun was at its peak. The weather was playing a cruel game with me. I didn't know where was I? How much time it would take me to reach the city and was I planning to walk all that way?

As far as my eyes could see, there were large farms of Oats. I couldn't see any single shape of two legs and two hands with a head barely resembling like a human except scarecrows.

I took a sip from my bottle water, took a dust-filled deep breath and started walking in an unknown direction.

Someone would definitely cross this place. That was my only hope.

I tried to be optimistic and thought that maybe this is the chance for me to get a ride from a handsome cowboy. Maybe he would come on his magnificent shiny black horse with the charm and charisma and would offer me a ride.

I took out my phone and looked into the camera and shrieked loudly. My lips were all dry, my hair resembled a wrestling match between the wind and dust and I had a huge pimple on my forehead.

I dusted and tried to compose myself in the best of my abilities and walked for an hour.

My hope was running thin because not even a single soul crossed by but then suddenly I saw some movements at the far end. My eyes were droopy to understand the whole picture.

On getting a little bit closer, I saw that some black thing was coming having sway in its body and someone was sitting on top of it. I could only see the hat of the person.

Woohoo look he is coming.

I hurried my pace to get a ride and then the picture started getting clearer.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

We both got very closer.

'Whatcha a young girl like you is doing here in Oats field? Eyy.' The moment he saw me, he questioned me and a little bit tilted his hat.

I was just looking at him and his animal and from their looks, I could imagine that both were trying to understand my dying and miserable state. 'Do you want a ride? Need any help?' He again asked.

Should I take this ride?

Can't this whole situation become better?

I shook myself from my handsome cowboy dream and contemplated the situation. The ride particularly looked dangerous since there was no safety on it and I believed that I won't be having any space on it to sit since I might fall back the moment I will sit.

How I desperately wished for a handsome cowboy and a black shiny horse not a black shiny buffalo with a 70 year old man riding it.

'Thank you so much sir for your kind gesture but I think I am good.' I wanted to cry and laugh both at the same time.

'Are you sure? This baby...' he patted on buffalo. 'is strong just like me.' He patted on his overflown belly and smiled.

'Oh! There is no questioning on the overpower of strong muscles being displayed right in front of my eyes but I would prefer to walk.'

Let's not make this harder.

'You sure? You seemed like you got lost here.'

'Noooooo, definitely not. Who said that? It was my sole purpose to come here.' I wasn't planning to tell this stranger how messed up my situation was.

'I just want to help you.' He insisted.

'Well then, if you insist can you please tell me is there any place nearby to stay?'

I hope there is otherwise the heat would kill me.

'Of course, there is. What you took our town for? That it is deserted? No soul live here?' His buffalo was sawing left to right.

I looked around and the place pretty much gave me the answer.

'There is this retail store nearby. You can take rest there.' His buffalo did not like me at all as it was getting too jumpy to move.

'Thank you for your help.' Finally, a place to stay.

I walked a few more stops and saw a big hoarding of Secrets of Oatsjunk. The parking space near the retail store was empty and the walls were covered in colourful graffiti.

I stepped inside the store and the ringing of small cowbells filled the place. I went to the counter and ringed the bell.

I was looking around the store when suddenly I heard a cough sound behind me.

'Yes, youngster, how can I help you?' A 65 to 70-year-old lady asked me and her name Margret was engraved on the batch.

'Hello, ma'am. I am Scarlett and I wanted to know from where I could take the bus for Oatsjunk City. I have walked a lot but I was unable to find any bus stop.' I hoped she knew about the bus timings.

'Sorry to say this dear, but news have surfaced that right now all the public transports have gone on strikes. So, you might won't get any buses or any other transport till tomorrow.'

Say Whatt????

'So, when this strike will be over? And is there any place nearby to stay?' I was completely exhausted by this entire situation.

'There are no such hotel rooms here for another 6 to 10 miles but..' she looked at me sympathetically, 'you can stay at my place for the time being.'

'Are you s-sure?' I stammered and was confused. 'Thank you so much for your generosity.' But I was elated at the same time.

'BUT, there's one condition.'

I nodded my head politely for her to continue.

'You need to go on the farms of oats and pick me some of the bundle of ripe oats. Me being an old soul can't do this at this age.'

You have got to be kidding me.

'Ma'am, I have walked all this way to come here and you want me to go back and get some ripe oats for you?'

She nodded her head.

'Ma'am, this is a bizarre condition.' She looked at me as if I have denied her prophecy. 'I don't even know F of Farming. Can you please give me another tedious task which doesn't involve working under the sun?'

'Look, miss, I am helping you to stay at my place, you have to do at least this for me.'

I was about to negotiate with her when suddenly the door opened, cowbell graced the place with its tune and I looked towards the intruder. Each sound of his boots was making my heart thump.

My breath got hitched, the wind started ruffling my hair and the Greek God looked in my direction and I blushed for no reason. The scene was no better than a rom-com movie.

I glanced towards the old grand ma lady aka our Margret and saw her applying bright red lipstick; she tidied her apron and offered him the most radiant smile.

Okay, someone clear this confusion, what is happening?

'Why isn't he saying something? He is looking in our direction?' I whispered to grandma.

'Of course, he is looking in our direction. The hottest lady of town is standing right in front of him.'

And of course, she was referring to herself. In front of her confidence, I looked like a beggar.

She looked at me with utmost determination, 'This time I am not letting this hunk go and would definitely take him out on a date. He has been lonely for so long and I don't like this one bit.'

I just gulped.

'Okay, leave the ripe oats condition, if you set my date with this man, I will let you stay with me.'

She was absolutely serious. She didn't even blink her eye.

'Why are you doing this to me? I didn't do anything wrong to you? Why are you giving me jumping in volcano kind of conditions?'

'Will you do this or not?' She sternly asked.

I was about to say NO when the Greek God entered our conversation. I tried to tidy my hair and wet my lips to stand in line for competition after looking at grandma's appearance.

'Ahh, Matt! What a lovely surprise? I am so glad you stopped by?'

Her voice was so sweet. This woman was the epitome of flirtiness.

'Why not? Someone was eager to see you.'

He spoke and I got transfixed.

She blushed, she actually blushed and I was going insane.

'Then why don't you set the date? I have told you a hundred times.'

My head started spinning.

'You know beautiful, it's not easy.'

I was looking back and forth to their conversations and I knew I looked like a beggar standing there like a dumb statue.

I started walking with a shattered soul since this insane hot man has his eyes fixed on someone when I heard an old man's voice.

'Matt, why are you wasting your time here? We have to go to the field to collect bundles of oats.'

I looked back and noticed for the first time that a man around 80 years old was standing near the door. I couldn't see him because  Matt was standing right in front of him and blocking him from the view.

'Oh Arthur! Why you have to take Matt? I will come with you. I will accompany you.' Margret pitched in immediately.

What happened to her old soul?

'No, definitely NO. You will distract me all the time and won't let me do work.' The gentle old man replied.

She pouted and said she will never do that. She took off her apron and marched towards him and before exiting winked in our direction.

'Was she hitting on him all this time?' That was the first thing that came from my mouth.

'Didn't you notice her eyes; she is head over heels for this man.'

I was blind to notice anything.

'I wonder how this old man will bear her? I feel sorry for him and she wants me to set a date for her. Impossible.'

Matt looked straight in my eyes 'He's my grandfather and I am planning to set a date for both of them.'

What should I say in this situation?
